Pokkén Tournament has big goals, with the aim to find an audience on Wii U and also to establish itself in the fighting game scene. Its competitive appearances throughout 2016 will be interesting to follow, though naturally these tournaments will bring the spotlight onto the game's balancing and mechanics.
Developer Bandai Namco has now completed an important step in shutting down an infinite combo that could be used by Shadow Mewtwo, which was a notorious loophole in the game. The update to version 1.2 now live and the changelog says the following:
- Correct the issue that enables Shadow Mewtwo to force opponents to continually block by using certain moves repeatedly.
- Adjust the battle balance of the Support Pokémon Reshiram.
- Repair several other bugs.
It's a tiny update of just 14MB, so shouldn't keep anyone out of the battle for long. As for those that liked trying to trigger the infinite combo / blockstring with Shadow Mewtwo, it's time to look for new exploits and tricks.
With thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

But 14 MB is big! That's 112 blocks (which is bigger than Link's Awakening... twice). And its such a great game too!
Make unskilled spammers unhappy by shutting a loophole,
so the rest of the userbase can enjoy the game as a whole.
@AlexSora89: yep, enjoyed by all. ^^
@LegendOfPokemon are you being funny? Or are you really thinking that 14 megabyte is huge?
Meh... I'll pop it in later. Working through TPHD. Also, I totally forgot about the card, anyway.
@Danrenfroe2016 Just joking. But 14 MB would be huge to someone in the mid-to-late 1900s.
I don't play fighters often, but decided to get pokken because the demo at the store was fun and the fighting games I did enjoy (post 16-bit era) were by Namco, namely SoulEdge and tekken 2. Anyways, so after playing online for about 30 matches (with a paltry 35% win percentage) I find fighting strangers to be extremely frustrating. I usually win easy or lose badly - no inbetween. I think the pikachu libre (whatever's he's called) is broken as well. The few times I had to fight him online, the player had like an 80% win percentage (well over a 100 matches) and gave me no chance to even move my gardevoir. I got stuck fighting this person twice in a row (the second match I just set the controller on the table) and watched instead of getting frustrating and screaming in my head, 'I'm pressing the damn button!!'. Anyways the guy kept doing the same three moves over and over and over again in the same order - is this the mark of a good player in competitive fighting games?? I picked up his pattern but couldn't apply any tactics because he was just way too fast.
Still waiting on my Pokken Controller from Argos. Ridiculous having to wait till the 29th when the release date was the 18th of last month.
Just curious, but who is Ryan Miller? He gets credited pretty often.
BTW Amazon.co.uk have this controller back in stock at only £16.99 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B019QB4SL0/
Looks like they might need to release another patch - in the US, the 1.2 patch appears to have region locked the game. Don't think that was intentional, as the European and Japanese versions don't appear to be region locked at all.
Why is NA region-locked?
@amiiboacid north america got a slightly dif updated mewtwo then rest of world and because of that the servers can't take it with 2 different types of shadow mewtwo but supposedly they working on that problem.
@LegendOfPokemon true...
I use Reshiram sometimes, I guess I'll have to see how it changed, if it even bothers me.
After giving the demo a go and finding that I actually like what the game is going for I think I may end up picking it up somewhere down the line, just not for full price. I typically don't get into too many fighters other than Smash so I usually wait for price drops on games of that genre, though I did receive Killer Instinct for free which I am a big fan of, at least in terms of traditional fighting games.
NA sucks different version for this game than the rest thus making the online "Region locked"
10/10 to whatever doofus did this.
@Blastcorp64 Just gotta get pedantic here: Pikachu Libre is female. Other one's male, though.
@Handy_Man He is a user who sends in news tips frequently. He once shared who he was, but I sadly forget his NL username.
I was tempted to pick this game up at some point down the road, but if they've really gone and region locked the online then that's a big no no. You realize, Nintendo, that some of us Europeans have numerous friends in America? It's bad enough that in Splatoon I just get endless matches against Japanese players almost constantly because they never sleep.
@Aurelis
The region locking issue has apparently been fixed. It was supposedly cause by NA receiving a different balance patch than everybody else, essentially making their version of the game incompatible with everyone else's, hence being region locked.
I will not deny using the Shadow Mewtwo exploit. However I only did it in practice mode because I just wanted to try it.
@Dankykong They reduced Reshiram's damage output as well as the shield damage when blocked.
@BulbasaurusRex Seems fair even though I use it lol I kind of thought it was a bit trollish anyway
