Nintendo's expansion into smartphones began this year with Miitomo, but the company has big plans for some of its existing IP - including Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem.
Splatoon - one of Nintendo's most recent hits - is arguably another prime candidate for mobile phones, as it boasts a unique look and has been popular with younger players. Nintendo isn't quite ready to release the series on smartphones, but that doesn't mean you can play it right now - or at least a clone of it.
As you can see above, this Chinese-made mobile title is a pretty close copy of the Wii U original, replicating the core visuals to quite an impressive degree. The music is lifted wholesale from the original game, and sadly there's no motion control.
This kind of cloning is pretty commonplace on smartphones, and it remains to be seen if Nintendo takes action - or is even capable of getting this shut down, given that it originates from China.

Stop with the click bait!
This tempts me to switch to another Nintendo news source permanently.
Looks strangely competent for a rip off game, still Nintendo should do everything in their power to get this shut down
I'm not going to say what's next because we know already.
you're a copy now, you're a lawsuit now
@BornInNorway81 ok
Click bait headline deliberately omits one word, "clone".
Here, I'll help you:
"Splatoon Clone Comes To Smartphones, But Not In Quite The Way You Think"
@BornInNorway81 The tagline says, word-for-word, "Attack of the clones": You knew exactly what it would be about, so how is it click-bait?
As expected, this looks terrible.
Does everyone just read the big words around here? >.>
@Mus1cLov3r
"The tagline says, word-for-word, "Attack of the clones": You knew exactly what it would be about, so how is it click-bait?"
Twitter.
@BornInNorway81 Yep, that totally makes it clickbait. The article was about a Splatoon clone; the Twitter post was about said Splatoon clone, so its being here is justified.
I dub thee "Beijink".
All they should need to do to take it down from App Stores is submit a DMCA request to the owners of said stores.
@BornInNorway81 The subheading reads 'Attack of the Clones'. If you read that bit, it becomes quite obvious what you're in for once you click. Title could still be a lot clearer though.
Oh China...
@borninnorway81 relax norway - or don't - go to some other site - who needs ya
Amazing they made such a good looking clone playable on a smartphone!
@BornInNorway81 It's not clickbait. It's really easy to see what the article is about.
@vitalemrecords
"relax norway - or don't - go to some other site - who needs ya"
You're rude. I never hurt you. You should go.
Reported.
Down the toilet
Looks like I imagine Splatoon would on the PS2, but running at a higher resolution, and a whole mess of lag issues.
Also, I feel like it's usually a bad tactic in Splatoon to ink the home turf too much at the beginning, but man. Looks like that's something neither team has any interest in, and therefore, would make it mighty easy to win if you did. A single roller trekking around the home base on either team in this battle would have essentially guaranteed a victory.
Still clickbait like since the tweet I just came from had no "Attack of the Clone" into it.
Here's the tweet.
Splatoon Comes To Smartphones, But Not In Quite The Way You Think http://bit.ly/2950J1o #WiiU #Splatoon #China
Looks like a job for Nintendo's Ace Attorneys.
I can only imagine how much battery power this will take... Also doesn't look that good to me. I'll stick with the Wii U version. I also don't want to go through ranked again, especially on a smartphone! XD
So, easy day for Nintendo's legal department?
I await the day NL evolves from the curiosity gap headlines. They're too LCD for the upstanding troop here
Wow, what a ripoff... But a shockingly good one!
They're not even trying to hide it, lol. Provides proof that game concept alone doesn't make a good game. This looks like it plays pretty rough compared to real splatoon.
What I see this as saying is that Splatoon is technically possible on the 3DS!
@yuwarite yeah, i wanted to try this out on (Bluestacks) 1. it only shows purple screen and 2. i can't read china register thing. oh well. i got the wii u version , so i don't really care to try out this clone.
Makes me want to replay Splatoon. Haven't touched that game in ages.
I would download this, but alas, my iPod touch is not fresh enough, a.k.a it's only on Android
The good news is there will be Chinese children who eventually play the real thing and have their mind blown. You can copy the style but this certainly doesn't have that "fresh" feel.
I want this!
NL isn't clickbaity at all. Sometimes a lil slow on reporting certain things but always great coverage and good writing. Even the rumour articles which would be the easiest clickbait articles ssay it pretty clearly in the title that they're just rumours.
Keep up the good work, I say!
On topic, smartphone knockoffs are almost unavoidable, but usually sub-par. No worries here for Nintendo
Omg that looks so rough.
Apparently China are really bad with regulation over games and most games are made by one company so I'm not really surprised by this.
Aw hey, when I read the title I didn't expect to have to play a knock off Splatoon to keep me over! ;-; Splatoon on 3DS would be ideal: not a direct port (that would suck) but a new game altogether.
Yeah this only complicates the WiiU ever coming to China as the Chinese origin game would be seen as the first game and Nintendo's game would be the one infringing.
@BornInNorway81 Clickbait implies there was deception at play but using a tiny bit of observation skills it clear that the article would be about a ripoff/clone.
China is just a horrible country! They have absolutely ZERO respect for Intellectual Property.
Hell, the government itself is activily in the hacking business of stealing foreign corporate secrets and not setting a good example themselves!
To be fair, what else are NintendoLife supposed to report on? Not like Nintendo's giving people stuff to talk about on a daily basis. Hopefully that changes with the nx.
This reminds me the stupid bootleg "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" for the SNES, which is actually a rip off a Speedy Gonzales video game.
This surprisingly has pretty good production value for a mobile game. I'm impressed.
I tried searching for this on the Play Store and it didn't come up, has it already been taken down or is it because I live in Canada lol
I call clorgery (clone + forgery). It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo can even get this shut down.
Looks pretty good Nintendo could make this work legit with a handheld tho rather than mobile.
@BornInNorway81 which one?
@sillygostly Come on, why doesn't this comment have more faves?
This isn't much of a "clone" but more like an attempt to put Splatoon on the Nintendo GameCube.
@HydroTendonMan Indeed, the best part about NL is that it's well written and feels like a good professional game news site.
There are some game news sites out there with terrible, terrible writing, professionalism, and shudder attempts at video blogs. My top pick in this spot is zeldainformer.com.
Oh man, eight-directional movement, my favourite. Imagine trying to play Splatoon with a d-pad (like in that game). That does not seem like fun.
After taking a second look at the video, I noticed that the only way to turn the camera is to fire your gun. Going to be honest, I feel like that could be somewhat problematic.
I'm also not surprised that the stage seemed quite linear, because I noticed you can't turn the camera while in squid form (also, no squid transforming animation. I'm very disappointed). I also noticed standing in the oponents ink doesn't slow you down, which is one of Splatoon's main mechanics. Basically, the entire control scheme just looks terrible, and they missed some important mechanics.
I like how I'm the only person complaining about the control scheme.
Why would people invest so much in such a blatant clone?
I'm sure there are reasons out there I don't understand..
Here rooting for Nintendo to take it down
YES YES YES YES... (reads article) NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOO....
@MysteryAozz Gotta love Jontron
I have it downloading right now, and will test it out as soon as it finishes.
While it does appear in the video that the developers need to make many improvements to the code, it looks surprisingly good for a Chinese knock-off!
Nintendo wants to appeal to casual players? Why don't they release Splatoon on mobile? Everyone loves it! (And WarioWare as well, that would be perfect on the go!)
Couple of my friends downloaded. Says its just like Splatoon lol.
Even the cat is still named Judd
Oh wow, those app permissions. No install for me, I'm not that curious.
Nice article by the way, Nintendo life. Ignore the moaners.
Very rough, but yeah, Splatoon mobile would make sense. Most kids are on mobile nowadays.
They could've at least tried harder with the animations if they're gonna copy the game fully. Though I admit I wouldn't mind playing Splatoon on a handheld, unless it was mobile platforms only.
@mjnmixael @HydroTendonMan Thanks for the kind words, guys! The cash is in the post.
@Mus1cLov3r
Because the front page doesn't show you the taglines like they used to.
No motion controls no go.
Let's all just calm down, grow up, and be thankful that we have a website dedicated to something we all love and have a common interest in.
This game probably proves what can be done on a smartphone, and I cannot wait for Fire Emblem!
@BarryDunne: Nope! Both she and her boyfriend Waldo are still at large.
@Ryu_Niiyama Actually the opposite. China doesn't really care about infringing on non chinese ideas. Therefore this wouldn't be an easy win for Nintendo. I wonder if they will even bother to pursue it.
@brandonbwii That's odd... They still show up on my phone, and that's all I use for this site.
@Damo Wait there is money to be made in the comments section? Full time or part time? I can always use another side hustle.
Well its China, doubt that Ninty can take it down......
@ReshiramZekrom it's not on Google Play. you have to get it off from their site.
Christ, that looks atrocious.
@World : I know, right? It's probably my most brilliant quip in some time. sniff =P
Wow. This knock-off's freshness is at an all-time low.
I'm trying it out but I can't figure out how to start.
@Ryu_Niiyama hardly. chinese authorities are notorious for siding with local copycats.
@THENAMESNORM Hey, the gba games were great! And now mobile is way more powerful than they were it's safe to say this fire emblem has the potential to be amazing!
I find it interesting how alot of people out there mock nintendo ips then make clones of them because they have zero originality of their own lol
Impressive journalism.
Please keep all of these relevant articles coming... that is, if you'd like to lose people coming to your site.
@BornInNorway81 you obviously don't know what clickbait means. The article title is very accurate. Splatoon is on mobile but not how you think it is, what's clickbait about that?
@FuzzyYellowBalls um this is news, it's accurate and Nintendo related
@Zombo took me a while I just kept pushing things and I got through
Ha, video blocked by Nintendo for copyright grounds
Misleading headline, not the first time this happens on Nintendolife!
Ah well, the only thing they achieve with this (the staff) is making a complete fool of themselves!
@Henmii It's the usual click bait article for add revenue. /shrug
The defenders say the title contains attack of the clones, but that is in the small secondary title and doesn't show on FrontPage nor on News aggregration apps like Flipboard! Hence, this is pure click bait for add revenue!
Little dissapointed NL is starting to resort to these tactics. :-/
@BornInNorway81 its rude to agree with you? Ok next time, I'll disagree with you. See how much you like that.
@Jeronan,
I agree, Clickbait!
@BornInNorway81 And I thought PushSquare was cheap... Nintendo Life is so close sometimes :S
@Trinexx Nice portmanteau there, mind if I use it.
@SpykeKat Ditto on that, though I'd guess they'd put it on the new 3ds (they really need to work on their names). I mean the wii u is essentially a big DS when you think about it, so two analog sticks would be needed to aim. Then again there is the gyro mechanism.
@Ed_Fairway Yes!! I think Splatoon would work even better as a N3DS enhanced game (more likely exclusive) title. The colours of ink stand out in contrast to the environment so it would be clear to see on the smaller screen.
@SpykeKat Yeah, so I'm hoping two things
1. They make the splatoon game
2. I win the competition for a free New 3DS
@Ed_Fairway That'd be nice. :')
@BarryDunne: Believe me, it's a relationship I didn't even know about (Carmen Sandiego/Where's Waldo) until I searched for this avatar. XD The internet can be strange.
@Ed_Fairway: Be my guest.
china has some of the worst copycats in the world, did you know that china had a cartoon about cars and the designs looks almost EXACTLY like the disney movie cars.... and they said its original f china... this is one of the few things that im glad nintendo would ban
@hieveryone Indeed, if memory serves me right there's a knock-off of Overwatch.
O-ho-ho, video blocked. Swift action is being taken.
Just mentioned this to a friend.
It 's impressive what they managed to recreate. The single player campaign, Turf War, Booyah Base, the shops, the weapons/gear; it's all there.That said, I recognize the time and effort that went into creating this rip-off. It's just a shame that they didn't put this towards creating something unique (and, you know, Not Copyrighted!).
@BornInNorway81 yeah I agree, this whole website gives off the vibe of... I don't want to say it but..... <{FAKE NEWS}>
