Retro Studios is sort of like the 'Rare' of modern Nintendo, a sort-of first party studio that consistently churns out amazing titles for the company. After successfully bringing Samus to the 3D plane with the Metroid Prime trilogy, they then went on to make two excellent new entries in the Donkey Kong Country series. Naturally, fans have been curious as to what the studio is busy working on now, but it seems that the inevitable next game will be something unexpected.
Emily Rogers – a source who managed to leak the upcoming Paper Mario: Color Splash ahead of its official announcement – recently took to Twitter to discuss the next project from Retro Studios. Evidently, her sources claim that the next game from the company won't be a new Metroid, Donkey Kong, or (oddly enough) Diddy Kong Racing 2, but something entirely original. Moreover, the project is supposedly in development for the NX.

Obviously this is something to be taken with a grain of salt, but there's been talk for quite some time now that Retro would be making an original game next. Only time will tell.
What do you think? What could Retro be working on? Would you rather they be working on Donkey Kong or Metroid? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Good. I hope the new game uses their new engine, called the Metroid is Dead Engine.
A Raven Blade revival could be interesting.
Not surprising, I wonder what it will be. Now we just need to hold a funeral for Metroid and begin the resurrection rituals. Any volunteers as sacrifice?
Love that they might be working on a new ip, we need more and they deserve a chance at their own.
This should be an interesting one to follow. I wonder if they're leaning towards an E, or T+ audience/rating for this venture. Hoping for the latter, but thats prob unlikely.
I hope this is true. I definitely want a new Metroid, but I feel Retro Studios should do something new; they've only released games for two series's. It's time for something new.
Retro was able to make two games for Wii (and GC), and this first (rumoured) NX title could be released in 2017. I think they could be able to develop a new Metroid for NX as well.
Aww... I was hoping for Metroid Prime Federation Force 2... and a 3... and a 4...
@sillygostly Well I was hoping for Federation Force erotic fan fiction, and maybe an Other M sequel as well.
could be a moba. or it could be 'sources' helping ease the pissed-offedness of the (edit ramble) of the nx releasing in 2017.
A new IP is good news. Diddy Kong Racing 2 needs to be made by Playtonic Games or bust!
Didn't Retro already say that they weren't working on a Metroid game?
I can't for the next rumours about new rumours to come out.
If this rumour came out last week the release date would have been 2016. Load of codswallop
it would be good for this studio to work on a new ip. If true, it would definitely point towards a strong NX launch.
Samus must be dead by now. R.I.P. chozo warrior.
For the sake of the NX it needs to be a new IP.
To be fair I could have taken a stab in the dark that Retro was working on an NX title for 2017 as well.
My guess is it will be a mature FPS and Nintendo will use it as a hook for fans who maybe wouldn't normally consider a Nintendo home console.
Been calling a Retro title for NX launch since last E3. We've been told Retro have more than one team. One of those teams finished up Tropical Freeze in late 2013, and the other team have been working on something even longer.
New IP is fantastic to hear though!
@Peach64 I don't think it'll be a launch title. I think a Holiday 2017 title is more likely.
Why did Diddy Kong Racing 2 even come up? Honestly...
@Jamotello Haha! A Nintendo MOBA would be crazy biz! :'D
Good to see some posative comments for once. This site was starting to make me depressed with all the Sh.. People have been talking. Quality studio = Quilty game. Bring...it...on.
Well that's nice to hear. Hopefully whatever it is will be ready for NX launch.
To be honest, this wasn't too far off what many had already guessed. But if it is true, I'm glad it's a new IP.
@Dankykong Because there used to be rumours saying that Retro is working on Diddy Kong Racing 2 for Wii U a while back.
Rumour has it there's a rumour of a rumour going about that there's a rumourer who's rumouring rumours in forumours.
Her sources are a bit behind on rumours, aren't they?
http://wiiudaily.com/2015/10/retro-studios-new-project-rumor/
I hope they've been hiring new staff because I don't think they could handle a Metroid Prime sized project these days. Please not another 2D side scrolling platformer.
They could probably pull off a mean F-Zero
Would be really interesting to see a new IP from them, so far they´ve only worked with existing Nintendo IP´s.
@shaneoh Not that I recall, but expecting Retro to make another Metroid game was always nothing more than wishful thinking. It wasn't going to happen either way.
Been in development a while so must be a BIG project
@IceClimbers One one hand, this project's been in development for at least 2 years, if not more, already, which means it could very well be a launch (or the dreaded "launch window") title. It wouldn't surprise me if Retro was also helping other teams make NX games too. On the other hand, teams that want to make a quality product first and foremost usually wait until after the console's been out for at least 6 months, so they have more time to polish/optimize it (like Super Mario Galaxy). PLUS, we already (probably) have a "hardcore" tentpole release (Legend of Zelda) at launch, so assuming a Retro Studios game is in a similar category, they might wait a bit (at least a couple months) so sales don't get cannibalized.
Question,
With Retro being an independent studio, could they debut a demo at e3 that's playable ?
Considering Nintendo's one game for E3 approach, could Retro seperatly show off the game ?
Even if they were doing an awesome (not prime) Metroid, I, a big metroid fan, wouldn't buy that Nx thing. I've been disappointed enough with Nin.
@Shigmin I'd rather see Shin'en make that. They have already shown their ability to pull that off.
Can't we just whine about how it's not going to be at e3?
@Morph it's what I would do but if been saying Nintendo needs a sub label for their mature entries
@TheRealThanos Good Point .. would still be interested to see what a Retro racer would feel like (maybe not Diddy Kong though)
Hope it's true. Retro has earned a chance to make something of their own. Chances are it is pretty compelling if Nintendo agreed to it, too.
Sigh. Diddy Kong Racing. Hope someone is making it. I can see why Retro as they did DKC and helped with tracks for Mario Kart and have experience with the adventure exploration side of DKR from Metroid.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"Please not another 2D side scrolling platformer."
What is the deal with people's discriminatory hatred of this genre?
What's your favorite genre? I hope the best developer of that genre never makes another one again.
EDIT
Not really, I'm not spiteful like that. Just driving the point home. Ori & the Blind Forest, DKC Tropical Freeze and Super Mario World are some of the greatest video games ever made. And they're all 2D platformers. It probably won't be one, but if it is, that's not a bad thing.
@Morph This would be cool
I would love a big new IP from Retro. Hopefully it will be a little darker in tone from Nintendo's other games, just to differentiate itself.
I'm up for anything from these guys, Metroid Prime literally blew me away, and DKC Returns was an absolute joy on Wii, I was like a kid again playing that! DKC: Tropical Freeze... that was, incredibly, even better. I'll take whatever they're working on and be grateful!
I don't think it's Metroid or Donkey Kong but a new game excited too what it is tho.
I'm glad Retro is working on a new IP it's about time.
If anyone wants to compare Retro to Rare then why not let Retro really prove themselves first with their own IP. I hope they make some mature games
If it's something new then it wouldn't be Retro.
@Smokingspoon What this guy said.
Also, I don't know why people keep expecting Metroid from Retro. Their last Metroid game was nearly a decade ago. Seriously, give it up. You're stuck with garbage like Federation Force now. Get used to it.
A rumor right after what good ol' Ninty revealed two days ago?
I'll reserve my judgment on Retro's new IP until I see it. I wonder if this just means a new IP for them or a new IP, period.
Awesome that they're working on a new IP for the NX. That is the kind of launch title the NX will need. Not just a bunch of old IPs. Just imagine if Splatoon would've released on the Wii U at launch.
So how long until the Tokyo Game Show, b/c it's like all we are going to have is rumours, rumours and more rumours until finally some Zelda U in 6 weeks (6 months after we were twice told it would RELEASE in 2015), and rumours, rumours, and more rumours until the NX unveiling.
This is so messed up.
@JaxonH There's nothing wrong with them. It's just on Wii U they seemed to be done to the point of overkill.
inb4 people begging Retro to work on Zelda as previously teased before by Miyamoto.
I don't care what it is, as long as it's something really good.
@Octane
This is what I'm thinking of:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/06/next_metroid_prime_home_console_title_would_likely_now_be_on_nx
So yeah, they did say that they weren't working on another MP
@shaneoh Oh, yeah, that quote.. I think that meant that Nintendo itself wasn't working on Prime (thus Retro wasn't either). My comment was based on the lack of expertise with the franchise (ironically!). Plus there has been a rumour going around for a while that they pitched their own project to Nintendo and they approved. In all, it was just very unlikely.
They are developing Project Giant Robot for NX
As much as I'd like to see more Metroid from them, I well know that's not what they're working on and I'd be really glad to see a fresh new IP created by them. Now the question is: what genre should they tackle? I don't know why, but the first thing that occurred to me is "dark FPS" (not gritty or gory, more something in the vein of GoldenEye 007 or Eternal Darkness), but they've proved their worth across two very different genres so I really don't know.
I doubt another platform, a racing game or an RPG (since Ninty has Monolith for them), but it would be cool to see a Retro Studios WRPG.
But if I should express my personal desire, it would be an Eternal Darkness sequel/reboot. That would blow my mind.
@japongt I must say that I'm intrigued by Federation Force still. I just wish they didn't call it 'metroid', you know... like, Luigi's Mansion doesn't include Mario Bros in the title.
All I can say is this is more bad news!
How many people are working at Retro Studios? Can one game every 4 years make them so much money that they can be on a private building and getting payed every month?
People need to understand that Next Level Games is the new developer of the Metroid Prime series now, whether they like it or not.
@Dankykong Because there were rumors that they were working on it from awhile ago.
Personally I hope SOMEBODY is doing Diddy Kong Racing 2. I LOVED the first one. I loved the world exploring and racing bosses.
@DrkBndr @leo13 My point was; why was there even a rumor about DK Racing 2? It seems too farfetched and like an obvious fake. Even if you want it, most bigger devs would know better than to try and compete with Mario Kart in this day and age, I doubt Nintendo would want 2 kart style racers at once, especially where they're competing with themselves in this situation. I think last gen proved with Mario Kart Wii, that you can't topple the best in class. Many kart racers tried and failed to make a big hit, even Sonic barely grasped the concept. Also MK8 isn't new but it would still take away from that game's online, would be too similar, or would hurt sales, they do have that MK8 WiiU bundle too. MK8 has water and air options too as did Diddy Kong.
A lot of the people who were at retro when metroid prime came out left a while ago.
Whenever I hear a way-too-soon release date on a game with little information and Nintendo is involved - you can, at minimum, add an extra 18 months. We all know this new Retro game won't come out until April/May 2019. Also, Retro is hardly a rare. Rare was turning out 2-3 games a year - it takes retro a decade to release 3 games.
@Dankykong If I remember correctly the rumor started when someone found a trademark filed for Diddy Kong Racing.
They had Diddy Kong Racing out on the same console as Mario Kart 64 and a lot of people just bought both.
Sonic Racing Transformed is actually an awesome game I like it quite a bit better than Mario Kart 8 (yes I own both and have played both a lot)
In the N64 days I liked both games, but I liked Diddy Kong Racing more because it was a world to explore and it had awesome bosses and a story. That's why I hope they bring it back.
@leo13 Back in the N64 days they bought both. Today is a different story and like I said even during this gen and last gen people didn't get into multiple similar games the way they use to. YOU may personally have/will buy both, but it doesn't mean it would make the splash it once did. Personal opinion and taste doesn't mean "they WILL bring us another DK racing"
@Shigmin Could be interesting indeed, but as far as I know, Retro or any of the people working there have never done any racing games, so I'd rather have an experienced team make one, which is why I mentioned Shin'en for an F-Zero alternative and for a "normal" racer we might be seeing something soon from Monster Games.
But Retro Studios did do some optimization work on Mario Kart 3DS, so maybe they could indeed do a kart racer or something.
But I expect them to be busy with something big. No particular reason, just a hunch...
@IceClimbers There's still a new Metroid coming out.
@IceClimbers There's still a new Metroid coming out.
As much as I love Retro's work with Metroid and DK, and as much as I personally want them to make more games in those series, I think they've definitely earned the right to build something from the ground up. They've shown time and again that they can produce high-quality games, so it would behoove Nintendo to put some trust in the studio and see what they can do with more creative freedom.
2d super metroid
@Dankykong you're correct my opinions/desires don't equate to what Nintendo will actually do.
However, people are still of the mindset of buying 2 similar games on the same platform how else would EA and Activision be selling so many copies of Call of Duty, Madden (Black Ops III and Madden 16 were the best selling games of 2016 and both are in series that have a new game come out EVERY YEAR)
I would have never had any hope of seeing another Diddy Kong Racing, but that Trademark and the rumors gave me hope and I'm excited for the possibility.
@Madder128 last I checked Retro is owned by Nintendo.
Also: Metroid Prime 4 confirmed!( A man can dream.)
exciting. but also sad. it can't top metroid prime 4. nothing can.
Retro said a long time ago that they wanted to work on something new, a new IP, so what this Emily fan says is something that was talked last year (or even before). How does Nintendo Life turn every thing she says into news?
However, I think Nintendo needs a shooter or first person adventure or however you want to call it. It doesn't need to be Metroid Prime 4, but the genre has been ignored by Nintendo for a long time now.
I bet it's a big one.
Seems like a given that their new project is an NX game. A new IP would be nice too, although I wouldn't mind a new Metroid from them.
They're a long way from being Nintendo's 'new Rare' though - Rare put out immense quantities of top-notch games very fast, whereas Retro take absolutely ages to do anything. Granted, developing games takes more resources nowadays, but even then their output is very slow.
Considering people still talk about the IP this bunch of people created 20 years ago, I'd say fifteen years has been long enough on Nintendo's part to let them have a new go at it.
Hoping for the rumors to be true.
I'd rather see a new IP from Retro than another Prime or DKC, despite loving all of those to bits.
