Nintendo has unveiled the New IP RPG / Adventure title for 3DS, and it's called Ever Oasis. In development by Grezzo (well known for the 3D Legend of Zelda remasters on 3DS, for example), the project is being led by Koichi Ishii. Ishii-san played a key role in early Final Fantasy titles, and directed the Mana series up to 2006. He also served as producer on the aforementioned 3DS Legend of Zelda remasters.
As for the game itself, the Nintendo Treehouse demonstration has shown a colourful setting with a strong 'Egyptian' inspiration; there are aspects of growing resources and attracting wanderers to your Oasis in order to expand. The initial trailer also showed fairly conventional adventure RPG exploration and real-time combat, with the camera mostly locked behind the player. One feature is that you have a party of characters with different abilities that you can swap between on the fly; dungeons, puzzles and boss fights are also prominent.
At the time of writing it's still being demonstrated on the Nintendo Treehouse live stream, and you can see the trailer below.

Looks really good
When I watched the trailer on Treehouse Live, it reminded me of Fantasy Life, but it definitely is different. I'm going to keep a close eye on this one.
This really does look good. Suck it, Code Name: STEAM. Do it right this time, Nintendo.
I don't know how excited I am to play another RPG on the 3DS this year, but I have to say that the game is looking pretty good. It's different for Nintendo, and not in a bad way at all. I'll definitely keep an eye on this game.
I really hope this is as good as it looks.
This looks awesome! So excited!
Doesn't really jump out at me for whatever reason.
It'll probably be a game that I decide whether or not I'll buy near launch.
Anyone else find that chick with the blue hair hawt? Mmm hmmm....
@ThomasBW84 Video description on the UK channel tells it is a 2017 release, if that is of any interest. They did not say anything about the release plans on the stream I believe..
Well, I'm way more interested in this than codename steam. Looks good.
This has nothing to do with Beyond Oasis, but the title got my hopes up. Ah well, still interested.
Looks great to me. I loved Fantasy Life and this looks like it'll be a similar experience but with story, mechanics and gameplay different enough to make it not just a clone. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out.
I'll keep an eye on it. Looks decent.
The aesthetics look great, but the 'puzzles' and combat leaves a lot to be desired.
Maybe I'm not big into ARPGs, or I'm just burnt out with them.
Grezzo probably learned some lessons in masterful game development when porting the Zeldas to 3DS - this could be really good.
I've not seen the footage yet, but I'm super happy Nintendo are giving a new IP a chance, and Koichi Ishii being involved suggests good things!
This is a pleasant left-field announcement, and I applaud Nintendo for trying something new.
Very interesting, something else I get to play on my 3ds, and yet another great part of this year's e3. MK8 DLC and Mother 3 will bring a great close.
Hell yeah!!!!
Stoked that Koichi Ishii is working on this! Also stoked to know that Grezzo is as well. They did a phenomenal job on the Zelda remake/remasters. Nice to know this is what they've been working on.
I'm really getting a Final Fantasy XII/Secret of Mana crossover vibe from this, regarding the real-time battle mechanics and environment. Maybe even a splash of Animal Crossing with the "Oasis development". Interested to see more.
Great surprise Nintendo, great surprise.
It combines different genres together and is quite Nintendo like looking
Rather impressed by what I saw, and excited to know who's working on it. I know the 3DS has a library full of for RPGs but this one stands out to me with its style and real-time gameplay. ^_^
I was extraordinarily disappointed during the reveal. This game is a pass for me. Don't Iike the art style and honestly the gameplay seems dull.
Looks a bit like Zelda with some Final Fantasy elements. Very interesting, so I think I will get it.
There's town-building? AND it's Mana-inspired? I am SO there.
i think this one looks much better and fun more than FF explores
@ekreig * raises hand* I don't like RPGs at least not the kind that Final Fantasy and Bravely Default are.
Looks nice and I was excited at first but after seeing some of the actual gameplay it seems kinda boring. So many other games, so little time so I'll be giving this one a miss.
Will be interested in more information on this down the line, did not warrant an immediate "ugh" like STEAM.
definitely getting this game. I really want it. It looks like a fun change of pace from other RPGs. I bet my kids would like this game too
Codename Steam is a great game with good gameplay and graphics so why did it fail? I hope it does better but at the same time I'm afraid it too will suffer the same fate.
I'll wait for reviews and impressions. Good to see something new, even though it's another RPG for 3DS.
This sounds awesome. Nice to have another new 3ds title to look forward to in 2017.
The reactions here give me the impression I'm the only one who really liked Codename STEAM and want to see a sequel...
"THE END...?", or something like that, at the end (?) of the story.
On-topic: looks nice, but I need more to be convinced.
Never played steam so i can't really have a opinion but this game does look amazing and i am happy it won't come out until 2017
Looks cute. Nothing to wow me but nothing I dislike either.
I already want it!
Colorful RPG/jRPG? I'm glad to be a 3DS owner
@Robotron2084 Kid Icarus showed the potential of 3D action games on 3DS. Wonder when they may go back to such a game.
@KodyDawg
I purchased it, mate. So yes, I did play it and it was not bad but it was not defining by any means. The Fire Emblem Amiibo added some cool characters but it really didn't fit the end show wow that Nintendo hyped it up to be. And that concluding statement was my point.
@Shambo I seriously have to laugh that Code Name: STEAM is the "go to" example for a "new IP" on the 3DS. How could it have been THAT polarizing? It's so screwy.
@GameOtaku
I think it failed because of fan expectation/reality factors. During that e3 fans expected something like Metroid Prime4 to end the show but got Code Name: Steam. They also got a long Nintendo Treehouse segment discussing various things about it that didn't thrill, either.
This was a nice surprise Nintendo! Glad this isn't coming until 2017 - the lineup for the 3DS is already jam packed for this year (and we still don't have dates for Rhythm Heaven and Dragon Quest VII and VIII).
I'm not really interested in this one. I don't really like real time combat in my RPGs. I just came here to say that I liked Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Sure, it's not as good as other Intelligent Systems stategy games but it's still a great game.
Oh... An Action RPG.. Well that's slightly disappointing, but what can you do. Looks pretty nice though at the very least, maybe if it has some actual depth I will consider it.
Well that doesn't totally look like a Zelda rip-off... except it does.
I wonder how many RPGs Nintendo wants to release/sell on the 3DS, honestly, it seems like overkill to me.
Action RPGs are my favorite genre so this one will be near the top of my list. Looks really good to me.
Looks nice!
The game looks great.
this looks interesting. kind of final fantasy, meets sims, meets animal crossing
I love the colors, the desert theme, the economy/oasis building aspect and the Egyptian inspiration. Looking dope!
Lol so many closet Code Name STEAM haters over the past few days. I really enjoyed that game, taking into account the Saturday morning cartoon feel. Was it perfect? Heavens no, and I was hoping for a sequel to iron out some things, but I had a lot of goofy fun with it regardless.
It will never see the light of day again so worry not haters, it won't be coming back. You win.
Anyway, I digress. This new game looks really cool. I think this is a big winner for my wife. She loves RPGs and will enjoy making her Oasis.
Yes! At least they've had one good surprise this whole show...but seriously, I will take my Manas where I can get them. Especially if they're gonna also make it a Beyond Oasis reference (albeit probably with no tangable connection to it). Better than whatever Square-Enix will inevitably regurgitate all over the Apple Store...
I got flashbacks to Level-5's Dark Cloud and Fantasy Life when watching it, and with that impressive resume (and Grezzo's work not only on the 3DS Zelda titles but their Streetpass Plaza games) it'll be a day one pick-up.
@CharlieSmile because this game does give you the option to pick a gender?
I love jRpgs but this one isn't for me, looks to much like Rune Factory (which I like) with Animal Crossing (which I dislike), so sadly this e3 was very bad to me.
The exception was know more about games that I already want, but surprises wise there's nothing.
The fact that it reminds me (and everyone else, apparently) of Fantasy Life means I'm getting very excited about it. Can't really watch the Treehouse broadcasts at work, but I'll certainly dive into them when I get home.
My one complaint is that, given how many RPGs the 3DS is getting, it would be awesome if this was a Wii U game instead.
From what little we got to see so far, I really like the look of this game. The various gameplay aspects look fun and I like the design and setting of the world.
For now, I'd put Ever Oasis down as a maybe purchase, but it is certainly one I'm going to keep an eye on.
Looks like a blend of Rune Factory, Animal Crossing, with slight Zelda puzzle elements. I'm a bit picky per gameplay so I'd prob wait for some more videos, but the desert/Egyptian theme and character design looks good so far
Looks meh, not my thing guess
I'll give this game a chance, it's their first real original project so not bad. Still I think Nintendo should make more sequels to some of their existing RPGs as well. Also a hint of a story for the game would had being nice too. I am Setsuna doesn't just become interesting because of gameplay alone, it hints a dramatic story as well.
These games all look alike after a while.
There can never be too many rpg/jrpgs. I will be keeping an eye on this.
Nice. It give my Fantasy Life vibes, but the visuals are certainly much more impressive. I've put a lot of hours into Fantasy Life, so it's very likely that I'll pick this up.
Got a really Windwaker dungeons vibe with those rocks lol.
Looks fun, will wait for reviews though.
STEAM was probably one of the worst games i ever played,
Looks like a decent game, though nothing I am excited for. Hopefully it gets better. We need another good Nintendo IP that isn't Splatoon.
This game looks surprisingly good, and it's an action rpg no less! Definitely my style.
Looks fun, I'm just not a fan of the character models. But I think I will still be playing this.
@Zach777 yeah, Nintendo sometimes doesn't think with their heads straight when it comes to timing. I know they have a thought process, and everything is very deliberate, but sometimes they miss the mark when it comes to Western audiences and their expectations.
That said, this was a nice "surprise" and I don't think anyone was let down by it. I'm looking forward to buying it and giving it a go. I do hope there is an "animal crossing / harvest moon" aspect to the oasis building on top of the previously mentioned Final Fantasy Explorers aspect (exploration and battle mechanics).
(In response to you talking about closing out with Codename: Steam 2 yrs ago, when something larger was to be expected in this slot)
Also, I haven't been able to follow today's event due to work....
HAVE WE GOTTEN ANY DRAGON QUEST INFO TODAY!?!?!? (DQ7 or DQ8 for 3ds)
@VanillaLake
I feel like the 3DS is just playing catch up for not having that many RPG's in its first few years. Looking back on DS there were so many, and for a while I thought 3DS was never going to get into a good RPG groove.
Better late than never
@Yorumi Yeah, pretty much my stance on this one. It looks fun - I'm just pretty fed up with chibi artstyles.
Still, I'll give it a go. Nice job, Grezzo.
@HeroOfTime32 They just played some DQ7. Still no release date, but their copy was fully in English, so... maybe by fall?
@JaxonH True, but I still haven't bought Fire Emblem Fates even though I loved Awakening, so... I would have preferred better games on Wii U this year.
Looked really good but Treehouse was god-awful at demoing it. They literally just ran around town for most of their demo doing absolutely nothing.
@Jayvir The girls playing Zelda yesterday were kind of run-stop-run-stop-run-stop...
@VanillaLake I get that its hard to play properly and talk at the same time, but yeah, it was annoying to watch.
This game absolutely reeks of Secret of Mana.
In the good sense.
This game was a lovely surprise! Will definitely be checking it out.
Not sure why people are using this comment thread to hate on CNS? Stop being lame and hateful for no reason. It was a great game that was sadly over looked and ignored. It might not have been for you or what you hoped for and that's fine but neither will this game be for others. It and it's devs don't deserve that sort of attitude, besides some people really loved it!
@Shambo no it's not just you. It was flawed but genuinely one of my favourite games of the system.
Honestly I think most who hate on it, even if they didn't like the demo, are just jumping on the bandwagon. There's nothing to hate at all. It wasn't offensive. It didn't take over or break any existing, cherished IP. It stood alone and if you didn't like it then you could just leave it be and move on. But instead they hate for no real reason.
I doubt Nintendo would ever give a sequel a greenlight though. Even if they could produce it super cheap.
Day one buy for me! You can never have enough rpgs
Pretty interesting and I'm liking the windwaker vibe
What's with the Code Name: STEAM hate? Steam looked like it would be an awesome game and it was an awesome game. This new game looks like pretty boring.
Looks pretty rad to me
Aw... so cute !
Oh my ... infusion of Final Fantasy by Koichi Ishii ? I can feel Final Fantasy aura here ....
I've played Fantasy Life and enjoyed so much so when i watched the trailer I was surprised. Like the article said, with Egyptian theme and cuteness of character design, the combat system is looks similar with Fantasy Life but with some addition. At least it's not Zelda games so i'll consider to purchase when it come out.
This game looks like a gift from the heavens!!!! Fantasy Life 2.0 (with early Mana series leanings!) and the stylistic choice (Egyptian inspired) is awesome! If 2017 is the 3DS's Swan Song Year, this, Story of Seasons Trio of Towns and (very, very likely since DQVII is out in September), Dragon Quest VIII will make switching straight to the NX harder. Yet, staying on the ole 3DS all the more sweeter.
Wow is it just me or is this his own way of reviving the Secret of Mana series. This could very well be a spiritual successor to the series and if so I VERY MUCH approve! Especially a spiritual successor from the series creator himself!
@Tempestryke
The Sims ? Lol
Well, very interesting if we can create own character and give them voices. And it would be nice the Animal Crossing aspect like Furnitures, House design including in this game.
@Zach777 Codename Steam was amazing - it's one of the best games on the system.
This looks amazing. Love the characters and the desert setting. The dungeon in the demo looked brilliant. Sign me up.
I'm getting this duh.
This is pretty much what I was hoping for from Nintendo's E3, something unexpected and out of left field. Action RPGs like this are totally my kind of thing and it looks like a lot of fun. Also, the penguin owl things being called "Noots" is the best thing ever. noot noot
Biggest news out of e3 for me...
Hmm, I probably skip this one.
@shani just look at the vita, we need all games on the system, despite Sony giving out sacks of cash to devs to make games, it still has more games than the 3DS.
@NickOfTime90 it does at the start. so I'm confused at the animosity...
@ricklongo to be honest, I saw the Final fantasy in the game even the Zelda combat
@JaxonH people complain about oversaturation but just look at the PS Vita, its library is larger than the 3DS yet people still whine.
@VanillaLake but they were amusing, Chiko was funny when she was an arsonist or too "ordinance" happy with her bomb arrows.
@HSuzumiyaVI
I'm not a fan of watching people that I don't know playing games, and I get annoyed when watching players that use "digital" moves instead of "analogue" moves in "analogue" games. I mean, Super Mario 64 taught us that you can walk, walk fast, run... but then I see these Nintendo staffers that don't know how to properly use an analogue stick after 20 years...
@VanillaLake you know the lady host, she apparently left IGN.
What is this crap? I guess it was too much to hope for an RPG with a realistic art style. Those don't really exist anymore...
It looks like 1 part Harvest Moon (Expanding the village), 2 parts Legend of Zelda (Dungeons), and 1 part Monster Hunter (Boss battles). Looks good to me!
@HSuzumiyaVI oh sorry it was a joke because @charliesmile does'nt want to play the new zelda anymore because they confirmed that there will be no choice in gender.
I don't pre-order often, but this one I will. Living in the boonies of western NY has nice sides but grabbing niche games isn't one.
I love action rpgs and like the looks of this one.
@charliesmile just tried to joke a bit. Sorry
Definitely has a secret of mana vibe to it
@k8sMum they definitely learned from the best
Way too many RPG on 3DS... I want more games like Kid Icarus. Gimme KI2 Nintendo.
Looks good to me but I need to see a little more before I decide.
I'd like to learn more about crafting and the purpose of expending the village.
I'd like to see a multiplayer mode of some kind. Maybe a online boss rush mode since I don't think it would be very fun going around solving puzzles with random people.
