@liveswired Wow, there is a HDMI mod for the 64? The blur effect had its purpose, but sometimes I felt it was overused. I understood why they would use it on flat sprites, but I didn't feel it was necessary to make, like a brown mountain, made from polygons, blurry.
Nintendo doesn't seem to get any love in Britian. As an American (arguably nintendo's biggest market) I find it strange that I rely on a British site for all my Nintendo news. Week after week, there are articles about nintendo's poor showing in the UK sales charts.
N64 3D polygons always appeared solid, like they had some weight to them. PS1, though I preferred it's clearer resolution, 3D polygons appeared paper thin and had that weird warping effect when they got too close to the foreground. It makes metal gear solid all the more impressive because it seemed to avoid all of the distracting PS1 glitches somehow, even the crude pixelization..
@aaronsullivan yeah, playing Splatoon 2 wouldn't be the same without a second screen. Same goes for Pikmin 4. I think the gamepad is great and hope the NX is compatible with it.
I prefer the over-the-top rumors. This info sounds too ordinary and expected. I want to hear rumors, like, about rare making a sequel to jet force Gemini exclusively for the NX. Something along those lines.
Huh? I didn't know it went unreleased. Those ads were prevalent in EGM and Gamepro at the time. Before seeing the ad, I didn't know Clinton played the sax or had a cat. They were quite informative.
I still daydream about this game from time to time. It really shows off Mr. sakurai's genius and wizardry as a game designer...if only he could take a break from Smash Bros.
It definitely takes inspiration from Outrun, but it instantly reminded me of Rad Racer (I think that's its title) on the NES. I think because, if I remember correctly, at the time the 3DS was announced and all this talk about glasses free 3-D came about - Nintendo had mentioned that they had been experimenting with the technology since in the '80s and they actually made a 3-D version of Rad Race, but it required a peripheral that had to go over your tv screen. I imagine something similar to the old touch screen peripheral you could attach to the old Apple II computers back in the '80s. Can anyone confirm this??
I had a level deleted - I tweaked it a little and uploaded it again. Can't he do the same?? Also, he needs to diversify. How much money does this guy generate from super Mario maker?
Sounds pretty ambitious; I wonder where he got the capital (was Devils third successful??). That would be funny if he has financiers from the Japanese underworld.
@yokokazuo thanks for the info. I'm way late to Fire Emblem (not sure why - I love SRPGs). So, book 2 was an original game when it came out on the SNES?
Really?? I think I have it. I wasn't sure until I looked it up, but it's called Shadow Dragon. I bought it used at GameStop (haven't actually played it yet). According to Wikipedia it released in all territories around '08 and it's described as the second remake of the famicom original.
It's got my interest. Reminds me of games from 1993 like cybermorph (jaguar), starfighter (3DO) silpheed (Sega CD) annnnnd - what's the other one??? - oh right! Star fox! Back when polygons were all the craze.
My introduction to monster hunter was tri on the Wii, and later 3u on the wiiu. I bought 4u when it came out, but barely played it. I kept thinking, I wish I could play this on a bigger screen. I understand the reasoning - Capcom is not in the best shape financially, and the handhelds are cheaper to produce and guarantee higher sales. I just wish Nintendo would take notice and help finance a console version.
Finally! I remember really liking this game. I played the flash version on a laptop and thought it was great. My generic controller for the laptop stopped functioning, so I tried playing it with the arrow keys. After about 30 seconds, I was like, 'I can't do this, I'll just wait for the Wii release.' Since then, I got married, bought a house, and I'm raising a two year old, but I'll be sure to download this for the wiiu as a form of closure.
@abe_hikura I guess in terms of super meat boys gestation period for a Nintendo release - a couple of months is very very soon. Seriously, I remember anticipating this release for the Wii back in like 2010.
I visited the store around the time MK8 released; they had a life-size kart displayed by the stairs. It was pretty cool, though I it was mostly a gift shop downstairs (stuffed animals, hoodies, etc.). The upstairs had a counter-top glass display with every Nintendo hardware, beginning with game and watch on the left and the wiiu all the way to the right with every gizmo placed in a timeline. It looks like they expanded that area and made it more like a museum with hardware pieces having their own display case. It would be awesome if they had more space and displayed vintage arcade machines and had all the items be playable.
880 pounds?!? Why would that mother let her daughter near it in an upright position, knowing it could come crashing down crush her like a bug. Am I missing the joke??
@PlywoodStick Thanks! I don't follow mobile gaming, but it seems there is as much uncertainty in mobile as there is in console gaming. There's never a sure thing, but it seemed for a while - based on 100s of millions of smart phones and tablets floating around - that conventional thinking suggested it would be easy money. But, just like most people probably don't buy a playstation to check their e-mail; most people probably aren't buying an ithing to play video games. I've had an iPhone for 5 years and I haven't opened the App Store in about 5 years.
@OorWullie Same here - I've always felt that way about western developers with few exceptions. Pre-Xbox (the '90s), the Japanese developers outshined their western counterparts in just about every way within the console space. Then, the Xbox came out and suddenly there was a flood of pc game developers suddenly releasing their games on consoles. It felt, in the 90s, there was a division in the west between pc developers and the activision and midway type developers. The pc developers were the innovators in the west and the console guys were trying to keep pace with the Japanese developers, but ended up releasing haphazard, fundamentally flawed clones of popular Japanese games. This is my take, at least.
What is the assessment of mobile gaming? It seems like we've been hearing about mobile gaming being the next big thing for over 7 years now ever since the angry birds phenomena. For a period, it seemed like there was gold rush of traditional console developers jumping ship to cash in on mobile gaming. Did it work out? Is there a breakout of minecrafts revenue? I single this out because it's on every platform. Is mobile its primary cash generator? Someone! Please, I need answers!!
And they could've sold so much more; I listened to a frustrated GameStop manager complaining about Nintendo shorting them time and time again on release day. They receive enough to cover their pre-orders and an extra 2-3 copies. I was about the twentieth person he had to explain this to apparently.
Yeah, this seems to be the norm in the U.S. splatfests. I think it's because the more popular group has a disproportionate amount of teams made up wholly of weak players. So, an all-star team from the less popular group may battle against a string of weaker teams from the more popular group before they encounter a team that matches well with them.
Free field movement? Does that mean the characters move around the stage like in power stone? Or just more freedom than the usual tekken (which basically plays like a traditional 2-D fighter). Though, I haven't played Tekken since 3, so correct me if I'm wrong.
That batman game was somewhat decent. I remember being 6 years old with the neighbor boy jumping up and down on my parents' bed to wake up my dad to take us to the Saturday early matinee to watch Batman (5 hours ahead of showtime). My dad was not too happy about it
As an eight year old defeating the first two was extremely satisfying. It was all trial and error; once you figured out which power up you needed to make things easier, the games aren't all too bad (ex. using the rocket sled in heatmans stage during the dissappearing blocks segment, or the freeze ability during the lazer beam segment in quickmans stage). Figuring out the order to tackle the robot masters is the hardest part; I downloaded part four from the eshop and played it for the first time and kept getting my ass kicked. It's not always intuitive either, like bubblemans bubbles can kill crashman (I think) in two seconds.
I didn't know any of the western branches had any authority to challenge NCL. Other then translating the games, I thought they were just a bunch of 'yes' men who sometimes marketed Nintendo in their domestic regions and worked out deals with regional retailers. Reggie, to me, always seems like he only does PR for things like e3.
Platinum is great. I've been playing their games before they were Platinum. They remind me of the golden age of '90s Japanese video games, but contemporary. Their games are top notch, but they don't always sell well compared to the perennial heavy weights. That's not an issue for me, but I don't understand why companies like activision and Microsoft contract them to make games; two companies that are about as far away as you can get from the traditional Japanese video game style. Maybe I'm being selfish and just feel it's taking time and resources away from platinum focusing on making games for Nintendo, lol.
@clvr that came to mind first. Sakurai expressed no interest in returning to it for an uprising sequel. It's too bad, uprising is one of my all time favorites and I would hate to go Dormant for 20 years. So, perfect opportunity for platinum to come in and save the franchise.
So, if this is the wiius peak year. Then, I imagine they'll want to ride it for, at least, another holiday season, especially if they make a push with Zelda (almost always a November release). Then, the wiiu successor is likely a fall 2017 thing. Everyone keeps saying its this year. I think, there going to try a 'third pillar', like with DS during the slow years for the GameCube and release a new handheld.
Is it rare for someone, like me, to like TTYD and Sticker Star? Sticker Star had the best finale battle against (spoiler alert!) Bowser than any Mario Game in my opinion.
Splatoon is the best Nintendo game since Kid Icarus: Uprising. With that said, I am sometimes baffled with how broken the game can be (lag, connection, etc), yet, have played 300 hours of it. I think that means I'm clinically insane.
How about Ancho V Games map? I am not too fond of it. It's more of a middle tier level for me and was disappointed because I was kind of hoping they were gonna save the best for last. But, still, I played it 3 hours consecutively last night. Weird.
@sandman89 pretty much, though more like Bayonetta with viewtiful joe humor. Nonetheless, excellent game and will likely be remembered as wiiu's best hidden gem. Though, as the article implies, it does seem divisive - reading boards around the net, people either love it or hate it. But, if you enjoyed Bayonetta and Viewtiful Joe, chances are you'll enjoy and its discounted.
i think virtual reality's viability and, ultimate success (when it's affordable), will come from outside of gaming. That's not to say it can't come from entertainment with movies and simulations, but, there is an obvious use for this in the other fields, like robotics. The future may be pretty bleak, when a man in an secured room away from danger can control a giant robot capable of murdering hundreds of people at will. Thanks a lot oculus, may as well start your terminator project.
