Atlus has released two new character trailers for the forthcoming Etrian Odyssey V, which is due to launch in Japan this August.
Masurao and Cestus are the characters in question, and each clip shows off some artwork as well as gameplay footage.
There's no word on a western release as yet, but given that previous entries in the series have made the leap, we'd say it has a good chance - although the recent fallout between Atlus and NIS America could throw some doubt into the equation as far as Europe is concerned.

So want this now! Other then Zelda this is my most anticipated game.
Could that be an overworld I seen in the outside setting of the fight scene? I really hope they don't ditch the overworld, it made the EOIV feel so complete!
So excited to see (hopefully) a Western release! I have really loved all the previous installments in (main series) Etrian Odyssey.
I love the art style but I could never get into this type of game... Kinda wish I could but the dungeon crawling style and mapping things out (that's what it is right? I tried a few demos) but I didn't really like it. This is nice for those who do though, hope it comes west! (Also hope that Europe isn't at the short end of the stick AGAIN).
I'm with you Tech...give me this NOW.
Show me where the line starts, I'll be right back; I'm grabbing my tent and Coleman stove so I can camp out. Oh wait I can just reserve it can't I...
Well I'm going to reserve it then!
@Jolt The newer games have settings if you want to use them and they will map it out for you. You still may want to mark the map for something important but for the most part you can just leave it alone and allow the game to do it. I believe EOIV and all the way up to Untold 2 allowed this. I pretty sure you could even do this on the demo so don't let this series pass you up just because of that.
YAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally some news! Hope this comes to the US...it would be great for the holiday season (just saying)!
@MERG How's Q going? Is it filling that EO void?
@Spoony_Tech I may try the demo for one them again if that's the case, the first person view was also slightly off putting but I might get used to it, who knows?
@Spoony_Tech Going well...except for the Burning Beetles...they're a bit annoying.
I'm enjoying it and it is filling the void.
@Spoony_Tech I can't watch the trailer right now, but overworld access? I count at least four unique notable locations outside the main labyrinth and the city, based on the promotional wallpaper.
I'll still have to pick EO2U up, now that it's dropping in price.
Just got Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 for the DS, going to start them soon. If I like I will get the next two and then, all going well, hopefully I'll be able to pick up 5 in the future.
@TheWPCTraveler I think you told me that before lol. I'm just keeping myself in check just in case for whatever reason there isn't one.
Similar to what Jolt said, I love the art style, the settings, characters, music of the series but the gameplay / mapping just never clicked with me despite my efforts with;
Persona Q (40hrs), EOIV (20hrs) along with the demos for EU1 & 2 (5hrs or so).
V certainly looks fantastic going by those trailers so I hope fans enjoy it & that it also gets an EU release.
@readyletsgo The first two games of the series are extremely archaic and pretty much obsolete at this point. The third Etrian is the bridge between the old and new - if you want to start with an old-school Etrian, I'd start with 3 and go from there.
I'm honestly afraid you'll play those two and never want to play any of the others haha
@Yorumi True, I mean, I own literally every EO game in the series, and started at the first game when it came out on the DS all of those years ago. I've discovered that for me, personally, going back and replaying the first two games has become a huge chore after the mid-to-late series refinements. Still excellent games, though - it's just, the first two are so difficult as to be not very accessible to newcomers. Unless they happen to be like you or me, Yorumi - that is to say, complete masochists.
EOIV's soundtrack is one of my favorite RPG albums of all time, and the Untold games' soundtracks are right behind. This series has some of the best music in the medium right now imo ^-^
@Yorumi Agreed. I think the inclusion of difficulty settings is definitely a great idea - but, there's still too great of a leap between normal and picnic. At picnic, I feel like I'm literally invincible. And normal feels like it might still be a little easy. There needs to be maybe 4 distinct levels of difficult, including a "nightmare" level that would be akin to the original entry.
@TeslaChippie The music is consistently some of the best I've heard in modern gaming, from any genre or on any system. Just phenomenal.
I've been grinding through the EO2: Fafnir Knight postgame this week. Hands down, my favorite series on 3ds and I have high expectations for the upcoming game.
I'm not getting excited for this yet. It could be years before it releases in Europe, if they even sell it here, and they surely won't bring any cool special editions here.
Started playing EOIV and remembered how awesome it is. It's quickly become one of my all time favorite RPG's. It's my first and only EO game so far. I'm about to pull the trigger on downloading Persona Q (on sale right now for 20 bucks), but am wondering how similar it is to EOIV. Also, is EOIV the only entry with an overworld?
@Blastcorp64 Yes it's the only entry with an overworked. EOIII did something similar but made it optional in the sea fairing.
As for Persona Q it feels very familiar yet fresh all the same. It has a lot of what make the EO series great but expands on it even more. Let's just say you get rewarded for completing maps 100%.
I love Etrian Odyssey I-IV and can't wait for this, although I have mixed feelings about the Untold series.
Regarding difficulty, I have a slightly different take on it. Yes, I and II could be unforgiving in terms of exploring the labyrinths, but there were certain aspects that made it perfectly tolerable. Certain skills were very powerful, for instance, and have since been considered "overpowered", but at least they let you get by.
For me, IV was pretty much perfect in terms of difficulty. III is an interesting one, as I seriously don't know how you could beat the post-game boss without using a "Warrior Might" party. I did it, and it was enjoyable, but he sure does have some endurance.
The reason I'm not so keen on the Untold series is that, although for the most part they feel more balanced, the post-game itself seems more arduous. The "overpowered" skills suddenly aren't enough and the super bosses have more HP, meaning your luck has to last much longer.
In short: can't wait, but I hope it's more like IV than Untold 1 or 2.
@Spoony_Tech thanks, I'll definitely download Persona Q this weekend. I hope EOV has an overworld (well, I hope first it comes west!) I liked the dofferent levels of ascension and the light puzzle elements, such as avoiding tornados and stuff. After reading up on the series a little bit, it appears the director for EOV directed just about every entry except EOIV, so I guess it's pretty uncertain if there will be an overworld or not.
@MetalKingShield The Etrian Untold 1 post-game was pure torture. Everything from the enemy combinations to the F.O.E.s (I'm looking at you Depth Dancer) wanted to rush you straight to the Game Over screen. I've actually found Untold 2 to be much more forgiving since the story mode classes seem to be more flexible.
Please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please do come to Europe, please ...
(as physical release if possible)
@Spoony_Tech Yeah, I guess I did tell you this before.
I'm hoping for a release around November or so, but considering every other RPG coming out, it'll probably pushed back to February 2017 or so.
@Blastcorp64 If your main complaint with EO IV is how short it is (~45 hours to beat the story felt short to me), then you'll love how much content PQ has. So, by all means, go for it.
Then again, these Atlus sales are pretty common, so you probably shouldn't bother with the LE that's more than halved its original $120 price.
@TheWPCTraveler How do you get through these game so fast. I spent 140 hours on EOIV and Persona Q. Now sure I took my sweet time but even if I didn't I can't see myself beating either in less then 100.
The only think I can think if is I like to level most of my characters evenly and that probably adds a lot of time but not 60 to 100 hours.
Here's what my activity log looks like:
Persona Q: 101:21 [1st Playthrough: 5S/11F (cleared)]
Etrian Odyssey Untold (+ Demo): 96:88 [2nd playthrough: 2S/B5F]
Etrian Odyssey IV (+ Demo): 76:51 [1st Playthrough: 6S/2F]
If I didn't do stuff like using Dowsing Rods everywhere in the overworld and getting stuck on a side quest.
All things considered, it took me 55 or so hours to beat EO IV, not 45. The rest of the time there were either resets or trying to complete the game after beating Yggdrasil up.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I normally end up just sticking with a set rotation of five or six characters through an entire playthrough. Though, yes, this did mean that I ended up ignoring characters I liked (like that priestess from EO IV) and characters I didn't like (nearly everyone I ignored in PQ).
Eh... I've just never been able to get into these games. And I love a good dungeon crawler. It just feels like so much gets thrown at you right off the bat.
