It's really easy to agree with Nintendo here. 4K TVs are a mess right now. There are multiple versions of HDR for each manufacturer and most adds input lag for gaming unless it's HDR10 (which only the newer models have). Besides that, the bump in resolution really is marginal for gaming. I will say 4K movies with HDR look fantastic, but that's about it.
VR is also a mess right now. The strongest seller is PSVR and that honestly looks too blurry, it could look like watching a 3d movie without 3d glasses. And there are wires everywhere...all for the purpose of closing yourself off to everyone in the room and ruining your vision. Nintendo is not about that.
I bought a Dreamcast with a few of my favorite games last October. Had a blast playing some of my faves (soul reaver, crazy taxi with original music, and Tony hawk pro skater 2). Even then I would 100% jump on a Sega-inspired retro console, especially if the more hard-to-find games show up there.
Shenmu, power stone, shining force, skies of arcadia....these would have to be in the library.
All it takes for me to double dip here is the fact that I can play Bayonetta anywhere I go. 720p at 60fps is fine. Hell, I'd double dip on a Darksiders 1+2 re-release if they promise the same.
...and No more Heroes, would love to have 1+2 on Switch.
Gaming news concerning the Switch is kind of all over the place lately.
People are bringing up an NDirect that was never even announced by Nintendo. Some are jumping the gun and bringing up random 3rd party ports that haven't had anything official. And some are jumping on that Bayo3 and MPrime4 typo from one arm of Nintendo over on twitter.
It's ridiculous. A simple mistake can get all these news sites posting complete nonsense. Hopefully no one ever misspells Mario with Wario, or we'll get 7 separate articles claiming Wario Odyssey is releasing in 2 weeks.
Wow, 7 of the 10 titles are Nintendo games. I'm not a fan of HZD, but I'm glad that's up there because otherwise, PS4 and XBO would only make the top10 list with call of duty.
Hah, love all the stats. Feels like we should have NintendoLife staff baseball cards
Anyway, thanks for all your hard work Thomas. You brought us awesome gaming news and reviews. I hope where ever you land next is just as fun. We'll miss ya.
Great answer. I care about the timeline, but like they said, it's all legends put together by one author which is what makes it so fun. The split in the timeline keeps it open to interpretation from gamer to gamer.
BotW goes nowhere in the timeline for me just yet, but it does give me the feeling that it's after Skyward Sword
@gloom They aren't doing it to be edgy though. This is likely the easiest way for an independent company to enter the game development space. Powerhoof is just two dudes from Australia I think.
Congrats on an awesome 7 years Mr. Whitehead! We'll miss your articles around here, but with your new job still being in videogames, I hope you drop by and share news with us.
Yay! I'm a big TQ fan and getting it on Switch is beautiful.
Other PC games I'd love to see on Switch: Divinity, Path of Exile, OwlBoy, Tokyo42, and Pillars of Eternity. Let's throw in KOTOR, because Star Wars needs to have good games again and Switch should have a Star Wars game.
Not sure what expectations people had for this $20 pass, but I've enjoyed the hell out of everything. Mostly because the gameplay loops work really well.
The combat definitely has its fair share of problems. Every battle starts with very few combat options until you really get going with the combo system and by then the enemy is dead. This is before unlocking those affinity abilities, afterwards it becomes more automatic.
Yes please! I love so many games where Mr. Sakaguchi was involved and always hold out hope that he'll pop up talking about something new. Would love to see Mistwalker and Monolith Soft team up for a brand new franchise or at least get The Last Story on Switch.
Haven't had a try at Terra Battle 2 yet, here's hoping the stop-motion TB3 is coming to all consoles.
@Snaplocket It was for the first game...which this game is a sequel to. So yes, it's necessary in order to explain the history of the franchise. Doesn't matter if it happened in 2012 or in 1492.
Hmmm, the technical issues and pricing are what hold me back from picking this up on Switch. Got the first episode free on XBO and it stuttered quite a bit there, can't imagine enjoying a less stable version.
Besides that, it's super cheap on most other platforms.
Capcom is very much a publisher cutting corners for the next couple of years, so this isn't too surprising.
RE7 hit sales targets about 7 months late, so far under their projected 10million that it's already getting a re-release in December to try and catch up before the fiscal year. Except by then, the used copies of the original game will get heavily discounted during the holidays, and folks would sooner get that while waiting for DLC sales (which will likely happen in December too).
This is why I love Kamiya/P* and similar developers. They really know what the gaming community would love to see make a resurgence. Sadly, these big publishers are too busy trying to line-up "games as a service" so we'll sooner see a Viewtiful Joe...character add-on for SFV. Or we'll encounter Amaterasu...as something to hunt in Monster Hunter World.
If we want any of this to come true, one of the Big3 would have to throw around their weight and champion the idea.
Well that's interesting. I'd love to see FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, Crystal Chronicles and Brave Fencer Musashi make a comeback on Switch. They shelved all these amazing IPs for way too long.
Well deserved, it's a powerful yet versatile little thing. Doom, BotW, and Odyssey are my biggest highlights, but the steady flow of 3rd party games really brought variety to the library. Different folks want it for different reasons, that's awesome.
I still haven't beat Doom, but do not care. Bethesda deserves my cash for having such an impressive push on NS, and we still have Wolfenstein 2 coming up.
I've been playing since release, have this game on both PS4 and Switch. Yes, you can see the obvious downgrade that's going to obviously happen for a console that can go portable at the drop of a hate.
The thing is, it really friggin' works. I love how the low-fi textures look, gives everything this retro-80's kind of look. Anyway, I'm having tons of fun and can't be more happy with how this turned out. Thank you Bethesda for making this real, I'm picking up Skyrim and Wolfenstein2 Day1
That is impressive. I absolutely love Doom and have no problem buying it a second time so I could play it anywhere.
Enough talk about market penetration or these hi-fi gamers that pretend Doom is unplayable at 30fps. It's playable, it's a technical masterpiece, this clearly isn't for you, so move on.
It's just armor for the sake of promotion and looks. Although I will say it's kind of silly that there's no bump to ancient damage, seeing as Xenoblade deals with mechs.
Ain't that the truth. I want to see developers keep their file sizes low and keep the same performance. I want to see publishers think out their releases, whether that be through smaller shipments or choosing to stay away from the big holiday seasons so they aren't in direct competition.
The industry has to get leaner and smarter. Quite a few games/developers got scrapped or straight-out failed this year, yet big publishers still bank on the notion that everyone is going to buy a 4K tv and a OneX/4Pro with 20 games. It just isnt happening.
All the while, they abuse the lootbox structure to try and catch constant sales revenue. Eventually, that well will dry up.
BraveFencerZan says EA would first have to test demand with a mass-appeal title.
Fifa18 is a decent start but they aren't taking advantage of the EA library or cultivating their developers with challenges like porting to Switch....something that would in turn help the quality of their games.
Instead, all we hear about are studio closures, Star Wars 1313 resulting in failure, changing their lootbox scheme for BF2 thanks to fan outcry, and insinuating that the singleplayer game is dead because said lootbox schemes make them more money.
That's a bit confusing though, especially with the recent infograph of how Switch owners use their console.
Folks who primarily play docked will want splitscreen games, not buying an entire console per gamer in the family then 3 of them have to play in handheld mode. Then comes the question of if the online service can be shared with the family.
There's a reason the people in the header image are playing in what looks like an abandoned factory. They've spent all their money on Switch consoles and accessories

Re: Nintendo Kicks Off A Big Sale on the North American 3DS eShop
May get the Dillon sequel. Was excited to see Fire Emblem on the list but I thought it was the remake...not a fan of Birthright/Conquest.
Lol, 3DS is going to have a weak 2018 release schedule because of a sale in the first half of January......what a stretch.

Oookay, this looks pretty rad.

Re: Nintendo Boasts Of Continued Third Party Support For Switch
My wishlist: Persona5, Devil May Cry series, and Red Dead series (yes, even the first PS2 game).
Hopefully Square Enix pops up later in the year talking about porting older games. Glad we're getting Octopath Traveler though.
Re: Rumour: Konami Is Bringing Its WiiWare ReBirth Series To Switch
How about this. I'm a ginormous CV fan and never knew they remade the GB game (one of my faves that I play on 3DS) until just now...
Really hope this rumor is true, would love to get every Castlevania on Switch.
Re: Amazon's 2017 Best Selling Games List Topped By Nintendo Titles

Re: PlatinumGames Is Looking To Create A Brand New IP
More indications that the AA scene is going to be growing over the next few years. "Independent" is too broad a word and that's a good thing.
Anyway, a new P* franchise is exciting.

Re: Nintendo Has Reportedly Delayed the Roll-Out of 64GB Switch Game Cartridges
Meh, I don't mind having to download parts of games. Devs will just have to keep lean game development in mind if they're considering a Switch port.
Re: The Latest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Gift is Genuinely Useful for Hunting Guardians
@happymaskedguy 100% agree. This game deserves its "Majora's Mask" companion.
Re: Bloodstained's Latest Level Reveal Has A Very Far Eastern Feel To It
Guh, this game is absolutely gorgeous. I continue to patiently wait its release. What a day that'll be.

Easiest Christmas purchase of the year
Re: Review: TINY METAL (Switch eShop)
Dang, thought it was releasing for $15. But with a score like that and my craving a new Advance Wars....I'm torn!

Re: Final Fantasy And More Could One Day Arrive On Switch As Square Enix Considers Future Ports
I'm torn.
While I'd love to see all the old games make it to Switch in a compilation, I would not like to see those horrible mobile ports.
Seeing FF6 in the style of Octopath Traveler would be great. Hell, even the style Tokyo RPG Factory uses with Setsuna and Last Sphear would be better.
Re: Bayonetta 3 is In Development and is a Switch Exclusive
Oooh, looks like they'll be shaking up the conventions established in the last two games. I'm excited to play all 3 of these on Switch, go Nintendo!!
Re: Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 Are Arriving on Switch in February
YAY!! I'm so happy this was announced. Day1 purchase
Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards
Absolutely deserved, one of the best evergreen titles I've ever played. And now, to go back into its beautiful world and get that sweet motorcycle
Re: Square Enix Is Bringing Romancing SaGa 2 To Switch Next Week
Whaaat! This has been an awesome week for Nintendo. And there are no signs of slowing down.
With Square Enix bringing back all these classics, I sure hope Brave Fencer Musashi gets some love :]

Re: Random: Yoko Taro Shares Impressions on Tiny Metal After a 5 Minute Preview
"That's a title, by the way, that we would not mind seeing on the Switch."
Yup! Switch is lacking games in that genre. Maybe a Bayonetta re-release is in order....all I know is that we need P* games on NS.

Excitement! Glad this scored so well here. Made sure my friday was work-free just to pick this game up and play un-interrupted.

Hmm, may pick up that special edition pro controller. I think my current pro controller had its amiibo scanner broken.

Re: Random: Did Reggie Just Accidentally Reveal Switch's Next Big Game Announcement?
If there is a new DK in the works, I imagine it would be tied to New Donk City and probably follow more of a DK64 vibe.
I would love that over another sidescroller following Tropical Freeze.
