We've just got word from the Big N that the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling home video game system of all time in the U.S. While this is obviously amazing news, this line in the press release about upcoming third party support really stood out to us:
This year, Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to Nintendo-published games like Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and a new game starring Yoshi. Fans can also expect continued support from major publishers such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, SEGA, Take 2 and Bethesda, plus a growing catalog of quality content from indie developers.
Which games those third parties could realistically consider porting to the Switch is another matter, but older games like Red Dead Redemption seem like likely candidates. Here are some of the key franchises from each of those publishers for your consideration:
- EA - FIFA, Madden, Star Wars, Battlefield
- Activision - Call of Duty, Overwatch, Destiny
- Ubisoft - Assassin's Creed, Tom Clancy, Rayman, The Crew, Watch Dogs
- Capcom - Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter
- SEGA - Sonic, Persona, Yakuza
- Take 2 - NBA, WWE, Mafia, BioShock, GTA (Rockstar), Red Dead (Rockstar)
- Bethesda - Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Dishonored, Evil Within
Let us know what you think of this continued third party support for Switch with a comment below.

Okay, they mentioned Activision and EA.
Just....what will it be?
And Take 2 could just be more NBA.
Activision getting mentioned makes my shorts feel tight....
OVERWATCH?!
Let's see the evidence then. Hopefully next week shows the proof. Mentioning EA is a bit disingenuous when they've only released one game with no promises of any more.
Lame clickbait. Came in expecting RDR for the Switch. Just wishful thinking.
Needs more racing games.
My wishlist:
Resident Evil 2 (remake)
Resident Evil 7 (golden edition)
BioShock collection
GTA V
Red Dead
Marvel v Capcom Infinite
Assassins Creed
Tom Clancy
Yakuza
Evil Within
Fallout
Strangely enough, there is no mention to WB games and NetherRealm, so I guess, Batman Arkham series, Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat are out of question?
Other omissions are Square Enix and Bandai Namco, but these two we know they are developing games to the platform.
If they surprise drop the direct I'mma be so mad. And then I'll watch it and immediately be okay, but still
Madden 19 on Switch would make me SOOOO happy.
Destiny, please
So we should expect another FIFA from EA and some kind of COD spin-off title from Activision.
We know Bethesda is really supporting the Switch and I imagine sales are good enough to continue doing so. Same with Ubisoft.
Clickbaity RDR pic is clickbaity.
@tourjeff Even though WB Games aren't included in the companies announced to be supporting the Switch, remember they are the ones behind the Lego games. Those will continue appearing on Nintendo consoles until the series comes to an end... if that ever happens.
I hope Madden is on the Switch. I can't be the only sports fan that has a Switch. It also would be cool if Square put Kingdom Hearts on the Switch. They used to make Kingdom Hearts for Nintendo. For example Nintendo DS has two, the 3Ds has one.
Oh man, Overwatch and Fallout on the go would be a dream come true for me.
GOSH !!
I Hate ALL of them !
Except for Sonic , Street Fighter and Rayman.
No guessing required for EA and Bethesda (though not to say multiple titles aren't coming...)
EA = Fe.
Bethesda = Wolfenstein
Suspiciously this article doesn't mention either of these confirmed games...
@Anti-Matter How can you tolerate Street Fighter? All that disgusting violence...
You've changed.
I viewed this horrible poorly thought out clickbait article with Adblock enabled.
Now You're Playing With Power
I'd play the crap out of Dishonored 2 and Red Dead Redemption. I haven't played either of those on other consoles before so I'd be all in.
@FragRed Yeah, after I've posted I've released that WB is releasing a lot of Lego games, but, let's be honest, we've got enough already. I've bought one for my daughter and that was it, it's going to take a while for me to purchase another one.
Where is Lord of the Rings and Batman series?
That is what I want to see!
I hope that by the time Ubisoft puts out a new Splinter Cell, they will have a version for the Switch!
If EA brings Star Wars and battlefield I would buy them despite their whole micro-transaction debacle
@gcunit
Street Fighter is still rated TEEN / CERO B / PEGI 12, so i allowed that game.
Also, i still waiting for Street Fighter 30th Anniversary for Switch with Alpha 3 & 3rd Strike !
Gosh... those are the Best 2D Street Fighter Ever !
TBH I doubt Red Dead Redemption 1 will ever come to switch.
The reason for that is that I have seem multiple time that the reason that there was no PC version cause the coding was a mess for the game and it was a miracle that they even got it running on the PS3 and 360.
Now if the story above about the game having a jumble mess of coding to port it to PC is to be believed then I can't see it happening for the switch. RDR2 is a different story though.
Looks like the below are dead certs.
NBA 2K19
Madden 19
FIFA World Cup 2018
FIFA 19
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour if they decide to develop a new game
Don't think Nintendo would drop names with nothing to back it up
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
If it's just EA sports titles then you ain't seeing anything next week
I honestly believe sports titles from EA is definitely more likely than anything else.
That boast really wasn't very convincing at all.
And I expect very few of those games you listed to come to the system, at least properly current-new iterations of them, sadly.
@gcunit It's violence that doesn't come with a 16+ label, so it's OK
Dear EA,
NHL, or GTFO.
@kobashi100 Fe is confirmed.
@daveh30 I think we will see all there sports titles except UFC
Wow! Click bate much NL?
I’d like some “hd collections”. Bioshock trilogy and Ezio trilogy in particular. Man I’d love them portable.
Also. Resident evil 4 please.
@Octane Nothing better than teen violence
Your avatar is a little passé now, btw
@Octane @Anti-matter but in my country it's 18 rated. Damn I have to import it from another country
😉
Nice to see the farcry series back on Nintendo hardware.
Also I'd be keen on a remaster or 2 of older games.bioshock would be fantastic. Red dead 1 would be a great pull if the remaster was exclusive to switch, obviously paving the way for the sequel to appear later possibly.
It has to be franchise's that will make money for the publisher so wont be anything that is already saturated on current options and probably something that hasn't featured on Nintendo hardware previously. Which is an awful lot tbh
Red Dead would be an obvious choice for Take 2 along with GTA 5. I would be all over Red Dead since I did not play it though I do on it on the PS3.
Got a soft spot for Red Dead Revolver, would be nice if that was brought back. Otherwise I'd welcome new Rayman, Resident Evil and Elder Scrolls games
The Bioshock Trilogy with gyro controls would be superb. I've only ever played the original briefly so they'd be like new games to me. Gyro controls would elevate them to a new level.
@Anti-Matter Yes, as long as the SF collection isn't abhorrently priced I'll be getting it too I hope.
I’m open to all of the third party companies: Square, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Platinum, Namco, Koei Techmo... all of ‘em.
(I will admit I really did like Rabbids/Mario and FIFA for the Switch this year, and I have Skyrim and LA Noire to play through, but as a Nintendo fan I do like a Japanese style of game).
EA, ya say?
Yes! Battlefront II with Nintendo-themed microtransactions! I’ve always wanted to take on Darth Vader as Little Mac!
Would love to see a port of RE7 and Read Dead. That reminds me I’ve got RE:revelations2 waiting for me in my massive backlog. Of these RockStar alone could provide the boost next year along with Pokemon to hit that 20 million units sold in a single year.
Screw porting Resident Evil! Work with Platinum on a new Viewtiful Joe!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I think the clue is in the statement.
The 3rd parties that support the Switch now is very likely to CONTINUE to support the system. EA except. This in itself is a positive because usually after the first year they flee.
What will be truly impressive are 3rd parties that DID NOT pledge support suddenly jumping onboard this year.
Now that will be massive.
I think Madden, Assassin's Creed and Monster Hunter will be on the Switch by the end of 2018. Hopefully we see Red Dead, GTA and Fallout. Also, maybe COD will make it to Switch this year.
@gcunit Hah, thanks for the reminder, I should change it asap.
All of the above
If red dead (redemption) comes to switch I’m going to unintentionally make **** into my skivvies.
Never got too far on my ps3 copy but was loving the game. I even watched High Noon on a Sunday and made cowboy coffee to go along with it.
Edit: I hope I never see or play another assassins creed game ever again. After 2 I was done.
Nintendo boasting of third party support. Loving the corporate sarcasm.
@wratih9 I read red dead is practically impossible for release on any console as the original code is such a mess.
I just want Blizzard to bring Diablo 3 Deluxe Edition to Switch.
FromSoftware's Dark Souls 3 will be nice too.
We need more of these satanic games on Switch.
In order to keep everyone sane;
EA - Fe
Activision - Hearthstone
Ubisoft - Starlink Battle for Atlas
Capcom - Street Fighter Anniversary and Megaman Collections.
Sega - Valkyrie Chronicles 4
Bethesda - Wolfy2
Take2 - GTA V
No Namco sniff sniff. Soul...Calibur...
Other than Capcom, Sega, and Bethesda, I honestly don't care about the rest. A lot of those other garbage third party could easily be replaced by Namco Bandai, Atlus, NIS, Shin'en, WayForward, Square Enix, Platinum Games, Koei Tecmo, SNK Playmore, UbiSoft, and many that are already on board with the Switch. The fact there's no cashcow trash such as Call of Duty and Battlefield for Switch makes the system the definitive system for core games and triple A quality titles.
@biglittlejake Really the only way I would finally play Kingdom Hearts is if it all came to switch. I need it portably to play all of them.
And in order for peeps to go nuts;
EA - Fe, Madden, StarWars Shopfront 2
Activision - Hearthstone, Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, Overwatch, Crash Bandicoot Trilogy.
Ubisoft - Starlink, Beyond Good and Evil HD, Beyond Good and Evil 2
Capcom - SF Anniversary, Megaman, Okami HD, Devil May Cry HD Collection, Disney Collection
Sega - Valk Chronicles 4, Super Monkey Ball 1 + 2, Outrun
Bethesda - Wolfenstein2, Fallout 4
Take 2 - GTA V, Red Dead Redemption HD, Table Tennis
From a investor and all around "image" standpoint, it would be a good thing to see contributions from those entities on the Switch. Preferably new games, but even if a lot of those existing franchises were ported over it would still be a good thing. In my core though, I'm happy if they do, and I'm seriously not worried about it if they don't. I'm enjoying so far what the Switch has to offer
Sega Virtua Tennis 2018 will be appreciated.
Now that PSP/Vita is dead, how about bringing Lumines to Switch?
@GrailUK I NEED a GOOD Monkey Ball game! Not like the Wii shovelware ones.
@1UP_MARIO
Again, Don't be so Sarcastic !
I knew Street Fighter was rated TEEN / CERO B / PEGI 12. Even Chinese version was rated 12+
You oftenly use Mocking words toward me, pretend you have no idea with the topic. That's Rude, man !
@MsgBoardGamer There is absolutely no basis for my asumptions lol. To the point where it's futile me even trying to justify em! I am happy to be surprised at the Direct (hence my first list was purely what we know and rational!)
New games from new talent please.
I'm not sure why people keep bringing up Red Dead Redemption, it's been made very clear several times by Rockstar that the game's code is a mess and that it is almost impossible to remaster/rerelease. Admittedly this was a long time ago but....I still can't see it, there are a lot of great Rockstar games that could be done instead with a lot less effort. Bully, Midnight Club etc. Going with LA Noire first tells me they are going that kind of route.
Let's wait and see if I'm wrong though I guess. If it doesn't happen before Red Dead Redemption 2, it isn't happening.
I already own Persona 5 on PS4, but I haven't properly started playing it yet. I'd say it would be a great fit for the Switch (like all these incredible time-consuming RPGs) and hence I for one would definitely consider double-dipping esp. if it hadn't started on PS4 yet.
I'd also love to see Overwatch on the Switch. Personally, I would stick to the PS4 version, because I've got an active community there, but I think stylistically it would be a great fit for the core Nintendo/ Switch audience, plus it's one of the most enjoyable multiplayer videogames of the last decade - hands down.
The rest of the mentions above would be welcome, but honestly, I'd rather have prettier and smoother version of a game like TEW2 than a portable one. Tha's just how it is with these games. I don't think they are well suited for portable play, certainly not at the cost of framerate or visual fidelity. Just like I think it's amazing that Doom and Wolfenstein are coming to the Switch ... that's great for anyone who has no other option to play them, OR/AND who needs them on the go (I imagine a few busy parents might appreciate this despite having a proper gaming rigg at home for example. I for one applaud the effort, but I'll stick with the superior PS4/X1 version.
I'd love to see more indie-roguelikes on the system though, esp. Invisible Inc. and FTL - two games I basically yearn for the possibility of some double-dipping
@NinjaWaddleDee Part of me thinks the Kingdom Hearts that was made for smart phones should come to the Switch. It makes sense because there are other smart phone games games on the Switch. Gear Club, Oceanhorn, Implosion. Porting a smart phone game on the Switch must be easier than porting a console game.
Great news. The more third party the better. Can't wait to get Wolfenstein II on Switch.
Games that could get me to pull the trigger:
Persona
If they bring back NBA Street and NFL Blitz
@GrailUK "EA - Fe, Madden, StarWars Shopfront 2"
😂😂😂😂
@PorllM yeah there is not a chance red dead redemption is coming to switch.
(EA) - only thing that i care from EA Publishing game, would be A Way Out.
(Bethesda) - would put solid hours in any Fallout games on switch
(Activision) not interested in any activision games other then blizzard.
(2K/Rockstar) GTA V on Switch please!
EA, please port Mass Effect Trilogy to the Switch. Thanks!
resident evils 0-6
final fantasy 7,8,9 &10
kingdom hearts 1 & 2
red dead redemption
friday the 13th game
dragonball fighter z
sonic mania 2
new super mario bros 3
left 4 dead 1 & 2
fifa 19 with frostbite
wwe 2k19 that actually runs more then 10fps we need a stable 30 at least.
this is my wishlist for 2018
Well modern EA is the most useless shovelware factory, but how can you forget NHL from the list. I know Madden is big in USA but NHL is so much more bigger than Madden because both Europe and USA play NHL games.
He is probably referring to Fe, the game made by Zoink and published by EA. And there's probably a new Skylanders game coming from Activision. Do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Fe.
@dizzy_boy "Needs more racing games"
Agreed. Though the lack of analog triggers for throttle control limit the kinds of racing games that would work well. Doesn't matter for arcade style, but more realistic racing games would suffer.
@Evenmoresteven I was thinking Skylanders as well. Not that they'll make another, but they had a lot of people working on multiple versions for years so they'll probably put those people to work on some other family friendly game.
Has Ubisoft ported Child of Light to Switch yet? That could be their contribution. 😈
I do think EA will put Madden on the Switch. Maybe a big-head cel-shaded cartoon version, but it will come.
Nintendo isn't lieing though, just b/c some people jump to conclusions doesn't mean Nintendo is saying anything untrue. Switch has already gotten some pretty decent 3rd party support - Skyrim, Doom, LA Noire, Minecraft, Rocket League, FIFA - and with Switch selling so well no reason to think it will stop. Switch may not get every game, but as long as it gets 1 or 2 big games from every genre - sports, FPS, open world - it will be all right.
Aren't they missing a company or two from the list as square is a big supporter
Let's just assume, for the sake of the argument, that this is true:
In that case, a lot of people are missing the point of there going to be new announcements of third party games, which the rather specific phrasing certainly alludes to: continued support, NOT support (and titles) that have already been confirmed quite a while ago, so naming games like Fe and Wolfenstein isn't relevant and as such don't count as possible options.
And continuing on from the assumption, it would certainly tie in very nicely with that Amazon "placeholder for 18 new Switch titles/items on their web shop" article, not to mention the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Could very well be quite the interesting presentation...
EA: Fifa Switch: World Cup edition (minor reskin of Fifa 18 Switch); Fe (actually looks cool)
Activision: Skylanders (yawn)
Ubisoft: Mario + Rabbids DLC; that weird space game unveiled at E3, Starlink
Capcom: Street Fighter Collection; various Mega Man collections; Mega Man XI (these are actually all pretty cool)
Take Two: WWE and NBA skins, probably. Maybe as loot boxes
Sega: No idea. Sonic Forces DLC? Will Sega publish Shin Megami Tensei V for Atlus?
Bethesda: Wolfenstein II, obviously.
Basically, Reggie Fils-Aime is not really spilling any secrets here. Most of these publishers have already revealed content for 2018. I've taken the mick a bit with Take Two, admittedly. Anyway, let's hope it gets a bit more exciting than the above.
Overwatch would be amazing!
Red Dead Redemption will never be on Switch. Ofc i will eat my words and shave my head if that ever happens
Persona and Yakuza are firmly entrenched PlayStation titles, highly doubt Switch is getting those. As far as GTAV, unless Take 2 can get GTA Online to work with Nintendo’s infrastructure, then no way that is getting ported either.
@gcunit maybe it gets a pass thanks to those muscular, half-naked sweaty fighters 😛
Overwatch would be great on the Switch and very doable. The game is very well optimized. Lower end PC’s can run it well.
My wishlist: Persona5, Devil May Cry series, and Red Dead series (yes, even the first PS2 game).
Hopefully Square Enix pops up later in the year talking about porting older games. Glad we're getting Octopath Traveler though.
I would definitely buy Red Dead Redemption for the Switch, especially if it came out before the release of Redemption 2 so I can get a refresher on the story. Wouldn’t object to GTA 5 either.
@GrailUK Namco definitely IS on the list, and Square is on there too, @Arnold-Kage.
Here is the entire list that Nintendo themselves mentioned:
505 Games
Activision
Arc System Works
Atlus
Bandai Namco
Bethesda
Capcom
Codemasters
Electronic Arts
FromSoftware
Frozenbyte
Gametrust
Grasshopper Manufacture
GungHo Online Entertainment
Hamster
Inti Creates
Koei Tecmo
Konami
Level-5
Marvelous
Maximum Games
Nippon Ichi Software
ParityBit
PlatinumGames
SEGA
Spike Chunsoft
Square Enix
Starbreeze Studios
Take-Two Interactive
Telltale Games
THQ Nordic
Tokyo RPG Factory
TT Games
Ubisoft
WB Games
As specifically stated in the article, Nintendo Life just mentioned a couple of key companies and franchises, they never said that what they posted in the article here was the entire list.
I really wish EA would put Garden Warfare 2 on there. I think that game would be perfect for the Switch and it's audience.
Yeah yeah everybody wants big games (including me...), but for now please give me that nice little game Song Of The Deep it feets so perfectly for the Switch!!!
@SilentHunter382 I’d be very surprised indeed if RDR2 came to Switch. The game looks too current gen. It might be a bad idea to port a high end open world game to the platform.
@ThanosReXXX Ahh Thanos. You are so helpful it will be a shame when the Avengers take you down this year.
Don’t care for Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, Yakuza. Everything else I’d definitely be willing to give a try though.
@GrailUK Down, but not out. Titans are basically immortal.
And I'm the good part of him. The actual one would never be so helpful wanting to ease people's minds concerning any needless worries they might be experiencing due to incomplete listings...
@ThanosReXXX Weird how FromSoftware has been on there since January 2017, and yet we've not seen nor heard of them in the meanwhile....
@MFD Well, they've never been the fastest developer anyways, but they themselves have mentioned Dark Souls several times. They even mentioned getting it to run quite nicely on the Switch in beta form, so who knows what they'll come up with.
And for all you people that don't like lists, here's the infographic that Nintendo put out earlier last year, for comparison:

Or click this link for a slightly bigger version:
http://static.n1ntendo.nl/file/misc/Nintendo/ssssssssssssssssw.jpg
@SLIGEACH_EIRE We know Fe is confirmed. That's the EA game we've all wanted.
Strange that they didn’t mention 505, Warner Bros, Namco and Square- all already on the Switch locomotive except Warner Bros which is really surprising being they stuck it out on the Wii U the longest. Worth mentioning also that they own the entire midway/Atari games catalogs for us classic fans!! Edit- im sorry warner put out a few Lego games but I wrote this with games like justice league and the more adult content in mind!
@joey302 Kindly allow me to direct you to comment #92.
And you might want to take note of the last sentence in that comment as well...
@Noonch It's an indie game that they're just publishing. They need to do much more.
@ThanosReXXX Like others, I can't help wondering what From Software are doing. It's a pretty comprehensive list. The only one I'm really missing is Falcom. I'd love to see Ys and/or the Trails series come to the Switch.
@ThanosReXXX https://www.vg247.com/2016/12/07/from-soft-already-has-dark-souls-3-running-on-nintendo-switch-trilogy-re-release-in-consideration-report/
That's been quite some time ago, a lot of time to not hear anything at all to be honest. I mean we're not talking something like Monster Hunter: World, this would be "just" a Dark Souls port, nothing to really explode over.
@MsgBoardGamer So it could basically just be "Guys, relax, it's coming" but it may as well not be in 2018? I hope 2018 doesn't end up barren...
@MFD Like I said: they're slow.
But besides that, it's not like Dark Souls is a simple game, much less a simple game to port, so I wouldn't underestimate the efforts needed getting it to run on the Switch.
@MsgBoardGamer I'd sooner say it's both: just take a look at that infographic from last year that I also posted, and then compare it to that list that they released this week.
There's a lot of partners on there already mentioned on that old infographic, but there's also quite a few new ones, so it's both confirmation that previously mentioned partners are still on board/have again confirmed their support, and there are also new partners.
No need to look at it from a bleak or negative point of view: contrary to popular belief, this is actually good news, and reassurance for (what will probably become) yet another good year for the Switch.
@ThanosReXXX Yeah, not to mention the difference in power probably playing it's part too.
On a side note, I'm guessing Platinum Games' involvement is now pretty clear with Bayonetta 3?
Please be Red Dead...I've been wanting a good Western video game, but I don't want to go back to my PS3 to play it, and portability would be great.
@ThanosReXXX nice list! And yea that’s what happens when you skim through an article lol! But still worth mentioning that Warner owns the Midway classics being the Switch has been getting some decent retro love!
I wouldn't mind playing the original "Grand Theft Auto".
@joey302 You're welcome.
I hate it when old slogs like FIFA, Madden, Star Wars, and Battlegrounds are put above an actual innovative and fun game like The Sims.
@MFD I would assume so, but it will probably still be some time before we'll see any footage of that, but it will be well on it's way in any case.
Wonder if it's going to be another exclusive, though. Since they're only mid-sized, going multi-plat could bring in the extra cash needed for future projects and so on.
Unless Nintendo is sponsoring them again, of course, in which case it will be exclusive once again. Oh, the tears that will once again cause with the other console crowds...
Some sort of yakuza collection would be perfect. Doesn’t even have to be the last two to come out, a collection would make sega a nice profit.
@Krull More than likely one of the Dark Souls games, or if we're lucky something Nintendo-specific. Personally, I would even welcome a HD-reimagining of their two Lost Kingdoms games, that they released back then on the GameCube.
@MsgBoardGamer Well, it doesn't need any "too much reading into" to see that there's a positive difference to detect between that infographic and the new list, so all I'm saying is that we can be carefully optimistic.
@BanjoPickles
Micro transactions should never have existed.
I wanted SWB2, but out of protest, I won’t buy it, even if it comes to the Switch.
Lots of people have done their part in voting with their wallets, I don’t intend on differing.
Shame though, I would really have loved a good SW shooter.
@ThanosReXXX Did FromSoftware ever confirm publicly they were working on Dark Souls on Switch?
Last I checked that was just pre-launch rumours like a lot of things.
And until it isn't such, pillar of salt 4 times over.
I want all of it!
I'm just surprised to see that ea and Activision didn't bail out after the first 9 months of the Switch. Regardless I'm glad to see that Nintendo is finally recognizing how important 3rd party support is after stubbornly not pursuing 3rd parties during the wii u era
I wanna see Overwatch, Hearthstone, Diablo on there. That would be huge
Come on Fallout!
Red Dead 1 and GTA V.
Plus Plant vs Zombies 1/2!!!!
@YummyHappyPills https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/12/rumour_dark_souls_3_and_trilogy_possible_on_nintendo_switch_if_system_sales_are_solid
EDIT:
So, nothing publicly announced, but very strong rumors from sources that have been right multiple times over already.
And the same I already previously mentioned, also goes for you: there really is no need for any overly unwanted negativity, much less baseless negativity.
The list is official, there's lots of games coming, it's good news, period.
And salt is bad for your blood pressure...
Please be GTA5 and fallout
@gcunit lol damn right. Anti-Matter needs to get out more.
More third party support is always a good thing, as long as the ports are decent and aren't lazy attempts just to make a quick buck. I'm not fond of some of the potential franchises that could come (or have come) to the Switch, but from a business standpoint, they are welcome.
Personally, I would like to see ports or even new games from the Assassin's Creed series (preferably Syndicate and Origins), Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, more Elder Scrolls (wouldn't mind a port of Oblivion), and Silent Hill to name a few.
@ThanosReXXX It's not overly negative. Heck all I stated was the objective facts. Nothing negative about it, just the confirmed truth. That's not baseless negativity, that's just....saying what we know, honestly. :/ A shame you saw my comment in that light. Al I was doing was correcting you politely.
It's simply stating what's on the table. My comment was specifically with regard to FromSoftware, not the listed posted in the article, as I never mentioned that, and the subject of my comment was saying "Hey, they haven't confirmed it yet, so let's mot jump to conclusions."
Is that unacceptable?
FromSoftware is making something. That is all we know, that is all there is to be said on the matter. They have not publicly confirmed nor denied anything.
Publishers will hit the jackpot if they convince the Switch user base that $60 old ports is "3rd party support"
If they come out with Red Dead 2, Darksiders 3 and One Piece: World Seeker they have a deal. Skipping every $60 old game on the Switch in 2018 just like 2017.
@YummyHappyPills Well, that part is true, but seeing as certain things keep resurfacing in relation to them, the dots can almost certainly be connected.
After all: what else could they be making than a Dark Souls port? Or it is, like I said in a previous comment, something Nintendo-specific, but personally, I would reckon that to be less likely than a port of an already existing and popular franchise.
It's what's called logical deduction. Waving everything away simply because no one released a public press statement on it is hardly the standard way of judging things in this digital age, where things often get leaked well before any public announcement confirms it.
As for me shaming you, which by the way was not what I was doing (I simply don't like negativity), that was simply because of the "pillar of salt 4 times over" part of your comment, which was a "slight" over-exaggeration in my opinion.
And it's not just From Software: it's a BIG list, even bigger than that old infographic, so why should we not be positive about it?
I'm not saying in a "shout it from the roof, mega-hype train" kind of positive, but simply cautiously optimistic, and if Nintendo's track record of the past year with the Switch is any indication of what's to come, then we will definitely have yet another good year ahead of us, and that's nothing to scoff at with pillars of salt and what not.
@ThanosReXXX I agree to the logical deduction.
However, it cannot be understated that logical deduction is often misplaced hopes in reality.
Regarding say, "logically" we should get a Mario Maker port. Okay, but is that a logical move, or a wish?
Remember when Xenoblade Chronicles 2 "logically" wouldn't be a 2017 game and would be delayed?
"Logically" we should get Dark Souls, it makes up a large part of the FS library. However, it could just as easily be whatever was shown at TGA. There is equal weighting to either outcome, because of what has, and hasn't, been shown.
Yes, it could be Dark Souls. It could be any of the three.
It can just as easily be Demon Souls.
It could be, until we hear it, anything at all. It could be a My Little Pony game, and wouldn't that be something?
The reason I stated to take this with a pillar of salt is because again, until it is confirmed, there is a chance it isn't the case. Lord knows people have been burned too many times before.
I also want to point out, at no point did I say "Don't be positive about the list." At no point did I question, critique, or involve the list. You did. I corrected you on a little misinformation you were spreading, that Dark Souls was confirmed when it in fact isn't, regardless of probability. That is all I did.
You don't like negativity. I don't like perpetuated false narratives.
And yes, be cautiously optimistic. That's exactly why I say take it with salt, because if you don't understand the turn of phrase, is to view something sceptically.
That cautious optimism you are referring to is the "salt" with which we take these rumours.
I tend to prefer of thinking of things in terms of binaries. It either is, or it isn't. Until the game is confirmed, it isn't happening, because lord knows getting ones hopes up is a recipe for disaster. If it doesn't happen, and you weren't hopeful of it, you'll feel okay about it.
If it does happen, and you weren't hopeful about it, you will be pleasantly surprised.
I understand now that this way of thinking isn't very welcome here.
@YummyHappyPills Why would I not understand my own language? I'm very familiar with the phrasing, probably much more so than you, since I'm more than twice your age, no offense meant.
And to me, and probably anyone my age, taking things with pillars of salt is highly negative. A pinch of salt, on the other hand, would be somewhat cautious and critical, but stomping something out with exaggerated notions of said cautious criticism is negative.
My apologies for dragging you into the same pit as the "list criticizers", I was answering multiple comments and some stuff got mixed up, had to do some edits here and there...
P.S.
True logical deduction, exclusively done based upon the strict rules of deductive reasoning, can NEVER solely or even largely be based upon anyone's personal hopes and dreams. That would be the absolute opposite of logical...
And those Dark Souls rumors have continued on for some time now, and it would be so easy for From Software to say no, if that series, or one of the games in that series, isn't coming to the Switch.
And they have factually said that they were considering several of their latest franchises, based upon how the Switch would perform. That was last year. It is now evident that the Switch is doing more than okay, so I think it's pretty safe to assume that From Software is either in talks with Nintendo or already busy with making something for them, and it will probably be something based on their more successful series, which would make Dark Souls the most likely, not any of the other franchises that have also done reasonably good, but not as good as Dark Souls.
And that is purely based upon my professional point of view as a seasoned sales and marketing professional. But ultimately, time will tell, and I choose to hold the salt and be cautiously optimistic, and I would hope that most people, especially those owning a Switch, would choose to do the same.
As for binary thinking: that almost made me think of Shrodinger's cat.
I'd rather exchange that for quantum-based thinking: at least that gives you three options...
Ugh... Pure clickbait garbage article.
@ThanosReXXX You'll find my physical and mental ages are two very separate things.
I mean you are the more qualified individual. On that note with expertise you should be running my website and not me, given it focuses on the business behind games.
Cautious optimism is recommended yes. This is also Nintendo. We kind of end up expecting the worst. As I said, if the worst happens and you expect it, you wont feel bad. If the worst doesn't happen, and you expect the worst, youll feel good. Win win situation.
The only confirmation we have is FromSoftware is indeed making something.
Now the only spanner in the works regarding Dark Souls is BandaiNamco. We may need to beg first.
As for the binary thinking, that's simply a side-effect of my distrust of people, and working with technology, programming and games all day every day. There is no fuzzy logic, only binary.
One of those state the obvious articles.
EA and Activision might struggle a bit as their current roster of titles and the business models associated with them won't necessarily go down too well on a Nintendo machine. That lootbox related nonsense can take a running jump. Think about how much EA would have milked the likes of Zelda or the constant updates of Splatoon 2 and ARMS. New character? £10. New stage? £4.99. New gun in Splatoon? £3.99. New armour for Link? £6.99. Raw Prime Meat? £2.99. Radiant Gimp Mask? £15.99. Motorbike? £19.99.
Gimme Fallout!
You should stop suggesting that Red Dead Redemption could be ported. The coding for the game was a mess so they abandoned the idea of porting it to other systems a long time ago.
@Rika_Yoshitake Overwatch is pretty jank imo. I don't trust it. In fact, I actively protest the idea of Blizzard software coming anywhere near my Switch.
I'm probably just ignorant. Need to get woke, or summin.
@EVIL-C Ding! AGREED!
This article is unashamedly Click Bait. Please refrain from such material in future, Mr... 'Darren Calvert.'
There. Him tell't.
@Ziggy93
I’m the same way. I was going to buy it for PS4, but when they pulled that crap, I decided that I wouldn’t. I can’t support that practice.
Well this article is misleading. I don’t really expect to see any of the games mentioned, and creating hype for them is just disingenuous.
EA - Fe is confirmed. That’s probably it from them this year.
Activision - I honestly don’t know here, but I don’t expect anything huge since CoD:WWII passed the system by.
Ubisoft - Starlink is confirmed and supposed to release this year. Plus the yearly Just Dance release.
Capcom - Street Fighter 30th anniversary is confirmed.
SEGA - SMT is announced, but it’s probably too soon for that. I think this is more likely Valkyria Chronicles 4, which is slated for 2018 if it doesn’t get delayed.
Take 2 - I expect sports games. NBA again. If we’re lucky, GTA V, but I still don’t think it’s likely.
Bethesda - Wolfenstein 2 is confirmed.
Amazing news, personally was a day one believer they had a great product and that it would sell great. But it’s even surpassed my expectations which I thought till now were high.
It’s funny still seeing one or two people in this forum who still seem bitter about the switch’s success, I won’t name names as most know who they are but how can you not support it?
I hear some saying oh but we’re still not getting things like red dead redemption 2 or other new games...just wait, it will all come and more. I know I’m in the same boat as a lot of switch owners who are still playing the great games we have had this year.
A GTA game will be nice on Switch. Those recent South Park games would be cool too.
All I need is Overwatch. That’s it.
@tourjeff
Nice! I’m stealing your wish list and making it my own too lol
I just want a new Donkey Kong Country
@ThanosReXXX Well, exclusives are kind of anti-consumer though so it would be nice to spread the joy, surely?
I just hope it all works out, really. (Should've finished typing this a while ago, but got side-tracked )
All I want is Monster Hunter!!!!!!!
Out of the Nintendo (non Mario & Zelda) titles, I would have rather had a new DKC game than a new Kirby or Yoshi game, but that's just me.
EA: FIFA, Madden
Activision: Call of Duty
Capcom: Resident Evil, Monster Hunter
Take 2: NBA, BioShock, GTA (Rockstar)
Bethesda: Dishonored
Bring it on!
Sold my ps4 for a Switch a few months ago and never looked back, absolutely love it. 2018 could be potentially amazing for nintendo and I cannot wait 😊
Mass Effect Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption please.
So after reading through the comments I have a feeling in my stomach I'm going to be disappointed when alot of the games mentioned don't turn up.
Boo this article.
All I know is that if we as switch owners continue to support the system and buying third party and indie games (first party is a no brainer) then you will have more interesting games because of our support.
An odd list of priority. EA first?
"Continued support from EA"
I'll have that with a side dish of HMMMMM, please!
Really though, they might be preparing us for what could be contained in the inevitable Direct.
Hope so much that we get all of the above. There'd be no need to buy anything other than the Switch.
Monster Hunter first and foremost!
I'd be happy with others too though
If you know what my profile picture is, you know EXACTLY what I want. That is all.
@gcunit $40 for 12 games, not bad in my opinion if one is a Street Fighter fan
I just want NHL!
@YummyHappyPills You could very well be quite smart for your age, I'll give you that, but there's a 26 year gap here. Nice to hear you're a tech guy as well, but I guess I still have quite a bit more experience in that field than you. But more importantly, in sales & marketing, which is what is relevant here.
If Nintendo was talking BS where this article's topic is concerned, then I would definitely be able to see that for what it is.
Yes, it's Nintendo, and they have a rep to some extent, but things are pretty darn peachy for them at the moment, so no reason for them whatsoever to muddy the waters now with some statement that won't have any truth or merit to it.
Excuse me for moving into the whole third party support list again, but you kind of brought it up...
That whole if the worst thing happens train of thought seems hopelessly bleak to me, and doesn't sound anything like cautiously optimistic at all. Like I said, I'm not overly optimistic, like some googly-eyed, blind fanboy, but they're doing quite well now, and this ever growing list of supporters only confirms that third parties are also becoming more and more interested in the Switch, so what's not to like, right?
I really don't think we're going to be disappointed, unless of course people start expecting the impossible, like the Switch somehow having graphical parity in those big third party games, which is of course anything but realistic, and it always annoys me to no end that people subsequently still feel well within their rights to complain about that, even though their expectations were never realistic to begin with, but apparently that's the internet for you.
I like technology, but a lot of what the internet has brought us, can hardly be called positive, and talking about something being a shame, that's definitely a big one...
But I digress. I guess we're not going to see eye to eye on this one, but that's fine. We're just two anonymous people having a kind of meaningless discussion, spending time and energy that we could have perhaps invested in something more useful, but even so, no hard feelings.
By the way: I couldn't run your website any better than you, although I could market the hell out of your unique selling points towards potential clients, so if you ever want any pointers where that is concerned, send me a note...
P.S.
As a tech guy yourself, I thought you would be well acquainted with and appreciative of quantum computing and logic. After all: it's far, far superior to the binary system...
@MFD Exclusives are only anti-consumer if they're not on any system that you currently own...
But seriously: if Nintendo hadn't stepped in, there wouldn't even have been a Bayonetta 2, so I think that it really isn't all that far-fetched to expect them to do the same for the third game, since it was a pretty successful move for them.
But it could also be that the contract was only for the second game and now that interest in the series may possibly have grown again, Sega themselves may feel inclined to handle things themselves once more, in which case it would indeed become a multi-platform title.
And that would probably make a lot of jaded Xbox and Playstation owners very happy, and as long as the Nintendo owners will also get their copy, most people on here will probably also be fine with that.
Seeing as I am a multi-console owner, I'll be happy either way...
switch doesnt need ea support fk them.
@ThanosReXXX Same here, got me a PC and a Switch, but, somehow, I've got a feeling Nintendo has this in their pocket once again. I can only imagine it'll cause friction again.
All things aside, now that I've got your attention, what do you think of the dock? How it's marketed, what attention is paid to it, and how it's mostly an empty plastic shell? Whenever I look at the dock, I feel disappointed, because I realize it can be so much more than it is now (after all, a glorified HDMI cable in a box isn't exactly what enhances the Switch's home-console part of the hybrid if you ask me.)
Please Sega/Nintendo. Announce Shenmue already!
@ThanosReXXX If I ever need pointers sure. My qualifications are more in Economics than Business.
I know it seems hopelessly bleak but when you have depression you take measures to ease disappointment and after 4.5 years of Wii U, you'll have to forgive me for not swinging around to cautious optimism so quickly.
I've actually told myself that the inevitable Direct is where I will build confidence. 1 year is fine and it was a great year, but what I like is momentum.
If this Direct goes great it'll be a sign that there really is no slowing down, to my wallets annoyance.
And yes there are superior systems to binary, it's just what I work with. Games have a lot of "Is it on or off, yes or no, open or closed". Heck even AI does that.
If statements man. Infectious little sids.
And if we dont see eyw to eye on the matter until after the direct, meh. Different opinions are different opinions.
At least Im not one of those guys who says its a flop because the system/game didnt outsell its predecessor immediately despite a huge time on shelves and price difference...
@Rika_Yoshitake overwatch is from blizzard
People here obviously don’t play blizzard games overwatch has nothing to do with antivision or 99% of the game would be dlc
I'd like Persona 4 Golden on Switch having never owned a Vita to play it on. Catherine Full Body would be a day 1 buy as well.
I’m just really excited about Nintendo doing well. I regrettably let my old Nintendo systems go over the years but started hanging onto everything since about 2005. I look forward to building a nice collection of Switch games. I wish the battery was able to swap easily like all the other Nintendo systems. I hope Nintendo makes it easier to transfer saves and games from one system to another. Most of my big games are on cart but I know there will be some bundle down the line I want and not being able to move games will be a real problem.
@shinpaku It has a lot to do with Activision when you look at the full company name.
Activision Blizzard.
@YummyHappyPills really what’s next your gonna tell me Starcraft and wow are from antivision to lmao ive been playing blizzards games my whole life I already know about antivision buying up a bunch of blizzard the only game that’s actually on blizzards program from them is destiny 2
I fail to see how writing the title like RED DEAD REDEMPTION GOOD LORD makes that game even relevant to this thread. Anyway, this statement is probably meaningless and just reemphasizing games like Mega Man 11 and Wolfenstein 2, maybe a couple more unannounced 7th gen ports. Red Dead 2 is not coming to the system, calm down.
@shinpaku yes activision owns SC and WC.
@shinpaku In December 2007, Activision announced that the company and its assets would merge with fellow games developer and publisher Vivendi Games. At the time, Vivendi was best known as the holding company for the game studios Sierra Entertainment and Blizzard Entertainment. The new company was to be named Activision Blizzard, and would retain its central headquarters in California.
After this merger, Activision as a standalone company merged with Vivendi, the owner of Blizzard. They formed Activision Blizzard out of it, where ownership now of both Activision and Blizzard resides.
Vivendi owned Blizzard. Activision merged with Vivendi. Acitivison now owns Blizzard.
Yes they can operate autonomously, but ownership of the company, it's IP and revenue goes through Activision.
@YummyHappyPills well that shut him up 🤨
@diwdiws Sometimes you just got to whip up a quick Google search and say hey, when the company is called Activision Blizzard, it should be obvious. But the finer details work too. :/
EA is the cancer of the industry, but niave people keep buying their crap so at least the sales will benefit Nintendo. I just hope their influence doesn't corrupt Nintendo with their greed.
I don't think the Switch needs ports of all the big games already on PS4 and Xbone, I think it would be better to get games made for the Switch instead. Some ports are fine, but are always going to be subject to constant losing comparison battles with more powerful, systems chained to the TV. I think it would be better for Nintendo to continue to push the Switch as it's own thing.
Red Dead Redemption for Switch seems highly unlikely. The code for that game is a hot mess, as written about in several last years' articles. To make that game run on current consoles they would have to remake the game from scratch. I really don't think Rockstar is interested in that. This article feels like clickbait.
I love how people say this article is clickbait because it mentioned RDR as a possibility...ignoring the fact the article is about Nintendo name dropping these publishers for support, and the author just put that in as a possibility and one of many at that.
Would it be better if they put Overwatch as the image? GTAV? Call of Duty WW2? All games that as far as we know, aren't coming to the Switch but could despite comments to the contrary on some of them?
I would totally double dip for Bioshock and Fallout.
@YummyHappyPills yeah I actually did and it says nothing about antivision blizzard only blizzard so I’m done talking about it you can look for your self simple who made overwatch very easy
Can't wait to slip some GTA and COD into my Switch. Especially if whoever is handling development can fully utilize the hardware available. That goes for all AAA games in general regardless
Ironically funny that people calling out Nl for the red dead image, when they obviously got click baited by the BS rumour monger already!!
It won't sell systems (or probably many copies), but I have been playing TrackMania Turbo recently and all I can think while playing it is that the game would be a perfect fit for the Switch. Its short burst tracks with an emphasis on improving your times by a fraction of a second would be ideal for a portable.
As for other ports of existing games, I'd love to see some Red Dead, Dark Souls, Bioshock and Dishonored on Switch. I would also like to see some new games built from the ground up for the Switch though.
@Rika_Yoshitake Switch can barley play rocket league at 60fps
I doubt it could handle overwatch
Fallout 3, NV and 4 for me plz
Mass Effect Trilogy would be awesome on Switch !
They all use Unreal Engine and Switch likes Unreal Engine
All I want is Jeff Minter to start porting his genius to the Switch. All the Minotaur project games which were pulled from the App Store would be a great start; followed by Space Giraffe, Polybius and Tempest 4000.
For starters, EA already has another game on the schedule. It's Fe.
Here's the prediction:
EA - Fe and FIFA
Activision - Crash Bandicoot
Ubisoft - Steep, Just Dance 2019, Starlink,
Capcom - Monster Hunter, Street Fighter
SEGA - Mario + Sonic, Football Manager
Take 2 - NBA, WWE, BioShock Collection, some other Rockstar ports
Bethesda - Wolfenstein II
@shinpaku from their own wiki page: “Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. is an American video game developer and publisher based in Irvine, California, and is a subsidiary of the American company Activision Blizzard. ”
Note the “is a SUBSIDIARY OF”
Note also from sane wiki: “parent: activision blizzard”
Your a dense one aren’t you?
@SilentHunter382 i actually read something completely different, i read that Rockstar wants to keep the franchise as a console exclusive. Not really sure why or if thats even true but that seems to be the reason most are giving.
@MFD I agree, at first I thought that this was where the extra power resided, but other than being a kind of kick stand, it is little more than a glorified "power unlocker" for the Switch itself, that has some extra connectors to boot.
Of course, it does actually enhance the experience, because it allows the Switch to go full speed without overheating, but in reality, the difference is rather small, which is a shame. Of course it would never be as strong as any of the other two consoles, but still...
In my opinion the (separate) dock is also way too expensive and I would hope that the price will go down some time soon, but this is Nintendo, so chances are probably slim to none, so I'm not going to hold my breath for that one.
I'm still curious if they're going to do anything with that SCD patent, though. That could really be interesting...
@YummyHappyPills Fair enough. Economics, huh? Some day, we might even be able to exchange some knowledge, then. Economics are hardly my strong suit, even though it has some overlap with sales and marketing.
The smart statement was sincere, though: you really do seem to have a good head on your shoulders, albeit in my opinion a bit over-cautious, but I can understand where you're coming from, so like I said: fair enough.
Here's hoping that this time next year, we can all laugh about any insecurities and possible failures on Nintendo's part, and just enjoy having had yet another good year. Unless of course we're going to repeat this discussion for 2019...
@ThanosReXXX Well, that SCD patent, the question is: Is that something external? I mean if you read this: http://letsplayvideogames.com/2016/10/report-nintendo-switch-dock-doesnt-support-external-usb-drives/
Then I seriously wonder if Nintendo even cares enough about the docked part to ever do anything extra with it. If they don't emphasize it via Pokemon Switch being the first mainline Pokemon playable on big-screen, then I doubt they ever will, and then I'm nearly 100% sure that further Switch iterations will just perfect the Switch itself, and not care about the dock at all.
I can't regard the Switch as a hybrid while the dock is what it is. The moment it offers a real, palpable difference beyond what it does now, is the moment I would genuinely say it's a hybrid. But right now, it's just a handheld with a side-accessory.
@MsgBoardGamer If your "believe it when I see it" approach is the same as my neutral expectations, then fair enough for you too, but if it stems from a too critical/negative point of view, then I guess it's just not my cup of tea.
I'm not expecting the best, but definitely also not expecting the worst, so I'm not going from the default point of view that it'll probably be bad, which in my opinion would actually ruin any good news coming from the Direct or any future news, because it would dampen the reveal.
Expecting nothing, on the other hand, can make you go either way without harm to any point of view you might have, and in the case of highly positive news, will make you enjoy it to the fullest, instead of just getting a feeling of being glad that we weren't disappointed or that it was actually better than we had expected.
To me, that's such a grim outlook on things, and I think that with Nintendo doing so well right now, they deserve a little more from us than that. But to each his own, I guess.
@MFD If you read the full patent of it, then the SCD would indeed be an external device, and would act like both a system and a network booster, lending extra power both locally and online to others.
The easiest way to see it, would probably be to compare it to the difference between a game PC with one graphics card, and a PC with two graphics cards, in SLI with extra memory. So more or less like an eGPU and/or a Thunderbolt device. (although the Switch would need either a new dock or some sort of adapter for the second one)
I hope you know what those are, otherwise Google is your friend. Just Google those words in combination with "PC" and you'll get all the info you'll need...
Alien Isolation
Coleção Assassins Creed
Coleção Bioshock
Coleção Guitar Hero
@ThanosReXXX One of my close friends has a degree in Business (Whereas I failed my degree in Computer Games Design, still kicking myself over not taking Economics) and he claims, though I do doubt his judgement, that there are things he has no idea on that just seemingly comes to me naturally. That's what he says anyway.
Though random factoid that just flew my brain, regarding the Switch and it's Flash NAND onboard storage being limited to 32GBs and the cartridge (Also Flash based) being expensive and limited in size.
As noted by Toshiba, there are shortages in manufacturing, and supply is being eaten up by cell-phones and their ability to absorb costs, thus offering 64GB and 128GB solutions in their phones.
With Switch I have no doubt they'd have gone for 64GB and 32GB cards would be cheaper, however under the currently documented circumstances a restricted supply chain from one industry has a knock on effect to another.
In traditional situations the solution of a market, if left to its own devices at least, is to increase the price per unit. This will cause demand to fall, as the less they can sell, the more they need to make per sale. So the price goes up to stifle excess demand.
As shown in the graph here: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/pesupplydemandstudent-110302210845-phpapp02/95/pe-supply-demand-student-39-728.jpg?cb=1299100159
The market wants to be at point A which is equilibrium, where supply meets demand.
With excess demand, at price P0, supply would dry up far too fast under the current shortages of Flash components. As such, the market responds by raising prices, so the market increases the price to P1, to restore equilibrium.
When the shortage is resolved, I expect the price will fall back to P0, which will be represented by a shift in the supply curve rather than a movement along it, which this graph unfortunately doesn't show.
Wow. I'm a complete nerd. But yes, I just explained away why they use 32GB internal storage, and why the carts are expensive, based on what we know from suppliers and the market of Flash chips, and how it will have a knock on effect. Good stuff. Everything has a rational explanation after all, it's just people don't ever consider the economic considerations of the matter, which is odd as subconsciously in everyday life we make decisions based on disposable income and our needs vs wants, in the basic economic problem. We just don't know it!
And yes, I am cautious. I am telling myself come this next direct that will change if its good. The last main Direct really showed promise so if I see it again, I'm down for the next few years.
@YummyHappyPills That's an interesting theory, and it might even be correct. But personally, I have long since given up on trying to explain (mainly to others) why Switch cartridges are so expensive, and why developers are (apparently) all choosing to ignore that actually quite present and available 32GB cartridge, much to our dismay, forcing us to continuously having to download a large portion of any given third party game to get the complete experience, or in the worst case scenario: even to get it to work in the first place, which to me is a complete disgrace, but apparently, I should see it as normal and as "that's just how it is nowadays"...
But getting back to your theory, that would mean that smart phones actually do have more of an impact on Nintendo. Maybe not so much in them having an effect where it concerns losing a lot of gamers or having to fear that smart phone games will reach the quality of console games any time soon, but definitely in the availability of hardware parts department.
Guess they should have gone for that rumored AMD box after all, then, instead of for a mobile SoC...
On a side note: I do agree with many that the internal storage of the Switch could, and probably should, have been much larger than the Wii U's memory, so why they chose to stick to 32GB is beyond me, and I'm not too sure that economics explains all that away, since buying stuff in bulk quantities and at purchasing prices, would have easily enabled Nintendo to acquire either 64GB modules, or even 128GB modules for an only moderately more expensive price.
So, that then does beg the question if the pricing was kept high artificially, or if the flash modules used in the Switch are truly that special or custom, which could at least account for part of a higher parts price.
Guess we'll never really know for sure, though. Unless all parties involved give full disclosure, and I don't see that happening any time soon.
Oh well, back to looking forward to that Nintendo Direct again. At least that is something that actually IS going to happen some time soon...
@ThanosReXXX I've got an idea about that aye. But then that link I've posted means they'd not go there, because "People would see it as less portable" which I find a BS remark to make. If it's a hybrid, why can't the docked part have that bit more? It's already stellar and top of it's game as a handheld, what's wrong with giving the other part some shine?
But yeah, since they're paranoid of "less portable" I doubt they'll give the dock the love it needs to be a valuable and real addition to the Switch, instead of just a glorified HDMI cable.
"that's just how it is nowadays"... You mean the idea of physical media disappearing? Yeah, I see that thrown around a lot. I really hope it doesn't come to that, but PC is already there, mostly... But then PC has the ability for far more storage than any console.
@ThanosReXXX I think it was confirmed that leading up the launch of the iPhone X and 8, Apple was bulk buying at prices Nintendo couldn't match reasonably. It's a bidding war on orders basically.
Of course, it should have been higher than 32GB, but I feel under the circumstances it would have maybe pushed it above the $299 sweet spot. In future I fully expect either SD Card bundles, or higher internal storage.
Regarding third parties, I mean we talk of logic and sometimes I wonder what those suits are thinking. Self-interest mostly and you can never work out motives like that from a purely outside stance.
Regarding phones having a bigger impact I believe mid last year a report came out that the supplier for Switch screens was worried about Apple leaving for another supplier, as that accounted for 50% of their business.
That's the kind of buying power we are talking about here. It's insane consolidation.
@MFD Oh, you'll get no argument from me there. And personally, I haven't even invested in a Switch yet, since I want the price to go down first, because even though it's a damn powerful handheld, I do think that the price for the system as a whole is still too steep, considering I'd want to also buy some games and the Pro Controller with it.
And that is why, as a multi-platform gamer, I ultimately decided to spend this year's Christmas bonus on an Xbox One S. I have Xbox Live Gold, and have already been collecting the monthly free games for the One for almost two years now, so I only had to buy one game with the console, and the rest I could download once it was installed, which now makes the grand total of playable games 61.
And all that for a €288 bundle, and a far more powerful console...
Choices, choices...
@ThanosReXXX Yeah, but it seems to me that most people vehemently worship and excuse any and all games on the Switch on account of handheld. Doesn't that clash with it as a "hybrid" console? Why should something that functions well in handheld, be excused entirely because of that? It doesn't seem fair to me.
The issues I come across in games like XC2, the frame-drops/texture pop-in/errors. I always wonder what the reason for those is. Lack of power? Incorrect use of the Switch hardware? Too little time to optimize the game? I don't know, but I'd love to.
On account of getting a more powerful console for less money, well, people then point to how it's an unfair comparison due to those consoles having been out for quite some time and the Switch still being fresh. That may be, but people will still compare them at the end of the day.
@YummyHappyPills I sometimes think that these third parties are genuinely enthusiastic about Nintendo in some respects, but on the other hand, they will probably be quite annoyed that Nintendo doesn't "bow" to their every need as much as the other two do, instead stubbornly plotting their own course across the video game industry ocean.
Just look at their history with EA ever since the end of the Wii. EA tried and tried to force them to use their services and what not, and in the end, none of that panned out in the way that EA would have wanted. The other parties may not be as bad as EA, but they'll more than likely have their own wish list that will definitely have some unticked boxes, courtesy of Nintendo doing things their way...
As for that $299 sweet spot: they could have maintained that. Back then, I calculated that buying a million 64GB flash modules, instead of 32GB ones, would only have cost Nintendo an additional two or three dollars per system, worst case scenario five dollars more, which they would have easily been able to get back through more sales, both in hardware and software, so that would have been a tiny hit that they could easily have taken.
And seeing how the Switch is doing right now, they would have long since seen that return on investment flow back into their treasure chest, and then some. Ultimately, it would still mean a healthy profit, only a slightly lower one than they ended up with in their current situation.
@MFD Once again: no argument from me there, and to be honest, that's more of a developer-related question, and although I'm a hardware guy, I'm not really into mobile hardware, so what the actual reason is, is anyone's guess if you ask me. Maybe @YummyHappyPills can offer up a theory, since he actually IS a game designer.
@ThanosReXXX I wish more people had your thought process. If enough people excuse the lacking of one part due to the other's performance (something unique to Switch as a "hybrid") Then Nintendo will never be incentivized to solve these problems.
It's this awkward situation where, according to Nintendo's graph, the majority uses both modes, but the docked one is a novelty and I doubt a lot of those people want to see it improved. It's a case of "Wanted enough to keep it, but not good enough to improve it" it drives me up the wall >.>
And to put an extra on what you said with the 64 GB memory: People pay more for less, and are content with it, so why would Nintendo want to improve what people are happy with? It's these reasons why we'll see improvements only very slowly over-time is my estimate.
@MFD @ThanosReXXX What am I meant to be answering here?
@YummyHappyPills On whether or not the technical issues in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are to fault on rushed development, the Switch itself not being able to keep up, or what else the reason for it is. We're talking frames dropping to the 10s in certain situations, errors that erase hours of progress and texture pop-in (of which I've read it's because they wanted to shorten loading screens) which begs the question of why couldn't they just shorten loading-screens without texture pop-in? (It happens when fast-travelling to a different place, and, which is more egregious if you ask me, when you're doing a chain attack)
The game in question, save for character models, isn't exactly a graphical showpiece, albeit being a really large world. But then Xenoblade Chronicles X also had a huge world, and that ran on the significantly weaker Wii-U....
@MFD Haha, thanks. I could go all old-fashioned on you and say that wisdom comes with age, seeing as I'm 47 years old, and most people you'll talk with online will probably be far younger, but I have always been kind of matter of fact, and being a sales and marketing professional might also make me able to cut through any company's BS a heck of a lot quicker than the average Joe.
@YummyHappyPills Your thoughts on his issues with the hardware and why some games only perform marginally better when docked, or still have issues, even though they are docked. Might be something that you could have some ideas about.
@ThanosReXXX Some seasoned knowledge among all the young people is welcome I sometimes feel old as well, being only 26 in that regard
@MFD To be fair to the game, though, it looks a hell of a lot better than X to me, although that could be personal preference as well.
Either way, the world is massive, so naturally, you would have to expect it to take a hit in the graphics department compared to any other type of game. But the issues are (apparently) there, and for that, I have no answers.
@ThanosReXXX Yeah I can understand that the world takes a graphical hit if it's that large, but... that begs a question: Odyssey also has fairly large worlds, right? And that looks just fine, same goes for Zelda.
Same with Fire Emblem: Warriors in terms of how the back-ground looks (and to a lesser extent the character models). I mean sure, the background isn't relevant when slashing up a ton of mooks, but they really didn't put any effort in it on that one.
@MFD I think you have to ignore Zelda and Mario in this discussion, seeing as how only Nintendo seems to know, as always, to get the most out of the hardware, for whatever reason other than the obvious one of them being the ones having made the hardware.
So, for a fair comparison, we need to look at other third party efforts that are more similar (Fire Emblem Warriors is hardly an open world game in the same vein as Xenoblade Chronicles 2) and see how they are performing.
@MFD @ThanosReXXX I have no idea.
Honestly I don't know but I think part of it is a case of laziness. For instance Sonic Forces runs at 720p 30fps regardless, but on Xbox One, it's 720p as well. On PS4 Pro there is no change and Xbox One X has weird aspect ratios and is 1080p half of the time.
Sometimes it may be down to battery management. Again, this is an area of tech that has slowed a bit in the past. I imagine for some games pushing everything at full portable spec is a battery killer, understandably.
But in reality, I have no concrete idea as it seems to differ on a game by game basis.
I imagine part of it is "Just target the minimum"
@YummyHappyPills That would account for no change in resolution or frame rate, but drops and other issues, even when docked, which should supposedly make the Switch run better? I don't know...
@ThanosReXXX But, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a 2nd party game right? I mean the people behind it also worked on Breath of the Wild, helped with world building!
But then, there's possibly more going on with Xenoblade than meets the eye: https://www.resetera.com/threads/xenoblade-chronicles-2-staff-analysis.9222/ Which would be compounded by this: http://nintendoeverything.com/xenoblade-developer-monolith-soft-recruiting-for-ambitious-new-project/ But contradicted by this: http://nintendoeverything.com/xenoblade-chronicles-2-director-on-development-inspiration-for-the-world-and-setting-upcoming-dlc-more/
Either way, I'm starting to wonder what's really in the dock now, and why Nintendo hasn't done more with it already. I also wholeheartedly agree that more power should alleviate these issues, when it really doesn't.
@YummyHappyPills I see. Let's hope they'll at least patch out those errors then, since losing hours of progress to an error that isn't part of the game to say the least, is a real shame.
@MFD I honestly don't know man, wish I had an answer for you, but I just don't. I can understand your frustration and/or disappointment at this whole thing, but other than that, I can't offer you much more.
EDIT:
The whole 2nd party thing also doesn't account for things: they helped Nintendo, simply because of their expertise with open worlds, not so much because they know as much about the hardware as Nintendo themselves, so that difference will still always be relevant and present.
And 2nd or 3rd party, neither of them will spend as much time with the hardware as Nintendo themselves, so there's that as well.
@ThanosReXXX I understand. I can only hope that there's enough people that wonder the same things about the dock and would like to see it improved for Nintendo to consider it profitable to have a closer look at it.
@MFD Added an edit to my previous comment...
@ThanosReXXX I've given it a read, aye. But isn't Monolith basically the same thing as first party? I mean, they are Nintendo owned, and work closely with Nintendo's other teams and hardware... I'm just puzzled by it all, since I always thought that these parties were very much completely under the big company's fold, and thus well in the know about things.
@MFD I'm no fan of repeating myself, but I really couldn't tell you, sorry.
@MsgBoardGamer I don't get the first part of your reaction, since I wasn't the one that was negative, so you're preaching to the choir there.
And history is overrated. It is good and smart to take certain factors into account, but people that are always looking behind themselves, run the risk of walking into a lamp post and hurting themselves...
And people always looking back are also missing out on what happens now and have less incentive to look forward to good things, which is a shame.
Then isn't now, and right now (as you yourself correctly stated) Nintendo is doing great, and as long as they are, third parties will keep coming, in whatever shape, size or form. And that is indeed a good thing.
@ThanosReXXX Don't worry about it, I know these are very specific questions that most likely only a given few can answer. I appreciate your time regardless.
@MsgBoardGamer Ah okay. For a minute there, I thought that you were saying that I was the negative one. My bad for misinterpreting you, though.
@MsgBoardGamer P.S.
History in relation to topics like these IS overrated, no doubt about it. Real history obviously not, but personal or company history within the space of a decade or less and continuing to question or accuse them of behavior they have done before isn't good or doesn't achieve anything other than being needlessly negative, which in the case of Nintendo in their current form, is completely unwarranted.
RDR on Switch? Forget it. Devs have admitted that the code for that game is one big hot mess. They would need to rebuild that game from the ground up. Unlikely to happen.
@Vriess Unless Nintendo slaps down big bucks, and I don't think they would.
@tourjeff Half of these are out of the question
@Alto For the love of..
how many times can Rockstar say this , they are not porting red dead because the code is mess and it would cost them more to port it than to make a new game
I can't get enough of Sonic and Rayman would be cool too.
For Rockstar games, I think GTA IV would be a more realistic option as of now, I don't see GTA V coming to the switch anytime soon.
@MsgBoardGamer They sure do, and all the funnier because it has happened with weaker hardware that could "surely" never be successful in this day and age...
The Switch needs fighters like SFV and horror games like Evil Within. Monster Hunter better drop over here too !
@MFD
Don't you think that Sony and Microsoft would have pitched in in order to get RDR on the PS4 and Xbox One, a couple of years back? And with the Switch certainly being unable to run RDR2, what's the interest for Nintendo for doing a port of only the first game? I love my Switch just as much as the other big Nintendo fan, but I'm a realist too.
Go watch this youtube clip and you'll be convinced too that we'll probably never gonna see a port of RDR on current day consoles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ11gHIJKj4
The clip talkes about a PC version but the PS4 and Xbox One are based on PC hardware, so it's the same thing. A Switch version would need even more work because it's based on ARM architecture.
@Vriess I believe you're confusing me for someone else, I'm very well aware that the Switch is a handheld in form-factor and boasts handheld tech, and most next-gen games will either be seriously downgraded, or will simply never show up.
@kopaka As much as I would like that (huge Destiny fan), it's probably never going to happen.
Why speculate so much especially with such a clickbait thumbnail?
@diwdiws soooooo by your LOGIC its not gamefreak that makes the pokemon games its Nintendo LOL
@shinpaku oh ignorance indeed is bliss.
You know how to use the google right? Try typing in who made overwatch and tell me where it says “activistion” 😉
