With today’s Nintendo Direct going a long way toward filling out the Switch’s lineup for 2018, it’s easy to forget about the 3DS, a console which is slowly but surely fading into the background. Still, the handheld has amassed quite an impressive library of titles over its long run, with a pedigree that will probably still take the Switch a few years to pass up.
To celebrate this legacy, Nintendo has started a random sale on the 3DS eShop with a little over twenty games, some of which are relatively recent releases and some which have been out there for a while. The deals run until 18th January, so you still have some time to pick something out. Here’s the list:
Bravely Second: End Layer – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Cooking Mama: Sweet Shop – $20.99 (was $29.99)
Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger – $7.69 (was $10.99)
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX – $19.99 (was $39.99)
Picross e7 – $4.17 (was $5.99)
Pocket Card Jockey – $4.89 (was $6.99)
Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask – $27.99 (was $39.99)
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – $20.99 (was $29.99)

Seems like today’s Direct and its complete lack of 3DS announcements kind of gently closes the door on the old handheld. There might be a game or two left from Nintendo at some point but I don’t expect anything major. Farewell, old friend.
Way to make Wii U owners feel left out...
I want Dragon Quest....but going to get physical version used at some point.....
Is this first time EOV has been on sale? I knew it would eventually be on sale. I need to get that at some point.....
Same. R.I.P. 3DS
@thesilverbrick Wait till E3. This direct was mostly focused on Switch announcements while 3ds just covered most games already announced last E3. I doubt the 3DS is going to die this soon as there is still a ton of money to make off the system. And don't forget that they aren't wasting any resources by having people work on the 3DS games, just like how they have a Handheld team for Zelda, and a Console Team for Zelda. And trying to move members from one side to the other would only slow production down due to the different methods and system each team has to work with.
I see the Switch as being for the main games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odessey, while the 3DS will continue on with games like Link Between Worlds or Samus's Return. And don't forget, Eiji Aonuma already stated his plans for the next 2D Zelda game, so the 3ds may end up getting 1 last Zelda game, which should change the way we see 2D Zelda games, as he put it.
I saw the Bravely picture and thought it was a Switch port. Darn...
@patbacknitro Waiting until E3 means Nintendo won’t be releasing any first party retail games for 3DS for over six months. If that doesn’t indicate their plans to slowly phase out the 3DS, I don’t know what does.
@thesilverbrick Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido.
@NinNin Again, I said I expect a small effort or two from Nintendo, but Sushi Striker isn’t exactly a AAA system seller. And is it even getting a retail release?
@thesilverbrick As Dillons Rolling Western: The Dead Heat Breakers. The third game of a strong series of 3ds games. So thats 3 games coming from Nintendo themselves this year. Which isn't bad given that late 2017 we still got a ton of 3DS games as well, including Mario Party Top 100, and Metroid: Samus's Return. And given that E3 2017 revealed 3ds games to release after E3 through 2017, and through the beginning of 2018. That shows what E3 this year could do.
So ya nothings changed. The 3DS is still in the same shape it was years ago. Eventually, it will die out, but I would give it another 2 years. Since the 3DS can still make a ton of money given how many people own it.
@patbacknitro Again, I said retail games. There are zero retail games from Nintendo on the way for 3DS (Kirby Battle Royale has already been released in Japan and Europe so they’ve got nothing coming). Never in history has Nintendo had zero announced retail titles for any console they plan on supporting long term. It’s also worth noting that the 3DS is seven years old in March. That’s well beyond the typical shelf life of Nintendo hardware.
As much as any discount is always welcome, Nintendo eshop discounts are never on par with Sales prices on the Playstation store where older games often get slashed 70 to 80% off launch prices.
@thesilverbrick Again you forget all the 3DS retail games past E3 2017, with only 1 this month. But you can't ignore all of the 3DS games that came out last year, after E3 no less. So its too early to say Nintendos giving up on the 3ds. Especially when people said the 3DS would die last year
@patbacknitro I’m not ignoring last year’s games. They have nothing to do with the fact that in Japan and Europe Nintendo has ZERO announced retail games for 3DS for the foreseeable future. Even if they announce games at E3, that still means there will be an entire half year with no retail games from Nintendo. Droughts like that only happen when Nintendo is phasing out a system. The games at the end of 2017 were Nintendo’s last major efforts and were a final attempt to sell the 3DS for the holiday season.
It's a nice sale but most of those games either I already have physically or are not interested in.
Not much of a "sale".
@KayFiOS
Severed is also on sale on the Wii U at least?
The Professor Layton games NEVER go on sale so that is one great surprise for people who want 'em. All I got this sale was Super Castlevania IV and I wished Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation was on sale, too, but b/c it's labeled as "already discounted" it probably will never go on sale.
Not a bad sale if you A. like digital games, and B. somehow don't have said games yet. I have most of the games that I want out of those discounts; the Layton games are somewhat tempting, but I prefer them in physical format if possible.
Should I get RPG Maker Fes during this sale?
Anyone buying Bravely Second I can't recommend enough playing through the demo first as its a prologue to the story
dissapointing and no cause these sales stink
though i would if miku was 5.99
It's funny. I think Nintendo quietly discontinued the New 3DS XL in NA sometime this holiday. All that's left is the 2DS line
I think I've mentioned this before, but I can't see Nintendo running their market with only 1 system format. Even with as much change that they've gone through recently, I think it won't happen. They'll let it go down to 2-3 1st party titles per year, with remixes, ports, more titles to get the 'Selects' moniker. Without lower end hardware product to fill the "budget role", they'll lose their minimal investment customers and gift-givers to Sony and Microsoft who are willing to drop their 4+ year old current gen consoles down to $189 during a major drive time like Black Friday, while the Switch is will sit there at $300+tax for the next year or two, at least.
And to this day, at least in the States, Nintendo is still sending out their "Evergreen" 3DS titles like Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Animal Crossing NL:WA, Orcarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3D, even Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and others to retail stores because customers still buy them. Maybe it's new Nintendo customers buying them? Maybe it's mostly for kids' gifts? Maybe those customers will eventually get the Switch down the line because they liked the 3DS/2DS. It's all part of Nintendo's market strategy to keep Nintendo relevant from end to end.
@ALinkttPresent Try the free RPG Maker Fes Player first if you haven't already. See what other folks are doing. The big thing that put me off to it is that it's not possible to create your own art. But for messing around and eventually going to the premium RPG Maker packages on Steam, it seems like a good start. Learn about triggers and events and all that.

@Fandabidozi Is the demo the first part of the game?
Dammit! My daughter used her xmas money to pay full-pop for Project Mirai a few weeks ago!
Im calling it nintendo direct january 18 the big one
@NinNin
It's a complete story that takes place before the events in the game. It's all important to the plot tho and a ton of fun and gameplay in and of itself.
@Fandabidozi Thanks. It's strange that it's not included in the game.
@NinNin
No problem. 😉
The demo to the original game was terrible so I bet a lot of people would give the second game demo a miss.
Nintendo: Where games on sale cost more than most full price games.
@ToddlerNaruto That must be for US. Haven't seen any Canadian stores carry any since the Samus special edition came around. I could be wrong but that's just what I've observed the past few months. Also lacking fresh amiibo stock since the Odysey launch
@Dtbahoney Oh, so it's not a "good sale" because Nintendo knows how to value their IP? Almost all of these games are quality. The same can't be said for the other systems, especially Steam at this point. Those games go on ridiculous sales because THEY'RE NOT SELLING OTHERWISE! Meanwhile, these games STILL sell regardless of cost to the consumer.
I basically have all the games on 3DS that I want at this point, and after playing it for so long and now being used to the luxury that is the Switch, going back to 3DS's tiny low res screen just feels old without the nostalgia of an actual retro device. It's like NES and SNES and the other retro systems. People are going nuts over them now, but in like, 1998, 2000, they were retro, they were just obsolete.
I am sure I will want to go back and play 3DS games in a few years once I get to the point where it feels nostalgic to me, rather than just obsolete.
Even if I have the Switch I still love playing on my 3DS. That console is pure gameplay quality.
@KayFiOS People just need to let go already! The moment either Microsoft or Sony launches a new console, the previous one is immediately ditched and no longer mentioned in any events and presentations. Nothing new.
But when Nintendo does it (especially since the WiiU failed commercially), it's a huge deal. /shrug
Meanwhile in Europe on the Wii U yesterday, we got all of Severed as a discount. Yes, that was it, one game discount. And you know the discount for it isn't as big as it has been on previous occasions but now that it's also on Switch, like other games, the reductions aren't as great.
These sales always happen when I'm between paychecks :/. Oh well I'm all about my Switch these days so it's really no biggie.
@patbacknitro I doubt we will see anything beyond more 3rd-party games (though that is going to taper off as well obviously) and maybe a select few so-dubbed '2nd party' games, meaning releases based Nintendo IPs, but with outsourced development.
It might have been a different story, if the Switch were as slow on the uptake as the WiiU was, but given the growing installbase and the rabid demand for content, it would be kinda insane to for instance 'waste' a new Zelda game - 2D or not - on the 3DS. Simply put, how much potential for moving additional hardware units would such a game generate on the 3Ds vs on the Switch? Maybe it could be a New3DS/Switch game? Possibly, but even that seems doubtful. Any such game is definitely not going to happen any time soon, hence Nintendo will be under no more 'obligation' to support the 3DS in any major way with exclusive 1st-party content.
I would even argue, that by 2019 any move that would incline folks to 'stay' on the 3DS as their portable/Nintendo platform of choice would be counter-productive. That does not only apply to consumers, but also to developers. Nintendo needs developers - incl. smaller ones - to slowly, but steadly move to the 3DS and to it's HD environment. Yeah, that is going to be tough transition period for many, and it means that Nintendo is going to loose some of it price-competitive edge here, but there is simply no other way going forward.
Nintendo should not provide much of really any incentives for developers to put moving to the Switch off much longer. Supporting that system with more content of their own .. well, I'd say that would be sending the totally wrong message. There might be a grace period yet for the 3DS this year, but that is about it.
Last but not least: Splitting ressources between the 3DS and WiiU last gen, was - among other factors - fatal for the WiiU. It would be sheer insanity to try to support two portable system ....
@Pichuka97 I wouldn't know about Canada sorry, I'm from California.
@masterLEON "Without lower end hardware product to fill the "budget role","
They have a few options which doesn't require them making any new 3DS games.
1. Keep making more $60 NES Mini and $80 SNES Mini every holiday.
2. Just keep selling what games they do have and keep the New 2/3DS XLs on the shelves. Sony announced years ago they stopped making Vita games, still selling well in Japan via niche 3rd party stuff. Lego, Disney and Skylanders figures still line store shelves despite no more new games for them.
3. Make use of the hybrid nature of the Switch and sell a "portable" version that drops the $90 dock, $15 Grip, $5 HDMI cable and $7 Joycon straps. They can call it whatever they want, Switch Portable, Switch Basic, Switch Handheld. Sell it for $229 vs Switch $299. Occasionally, like BF, put it on sale for $199. Just cheap enough as a gift for kids. And they'll need it for when Pokemon comes out on Switch.
Only reason to keep making 3DS games is if a replacement not Switch related comes out, a 4DS. Doesn't sound like you think that will happen so I'll spend no more time on that.
I understand them needing a low cost option as you say, I'm a parent and uncle, I need to buy and recommend gifts, but they're probably done making new AAA 3DS games. And anything downloadable which is going towards mobile. 3DS will get new games, Disney's Magical World 3, Frozen 2 may even get a game all the way out in Nov 2019, New Style Boutique. But not SSB5, MK9, NSMB3, SMM2. Nothing that would make people who haven't already done so go out and buy a 3DS. They'll still sell a few, but they're done pushing it. I don't foresee a New-er 2/3DS model either.
I of course could be very wrong and a 3DS Direct could happen today, Nintnedo does what Ntinedo does, but I think it's done being promoted as an ongoing concern, it's all "Selects" and sales from here on out.
Already have 14 of these.
@Ralek85 Thanks for articulating all that. I feel exactly the same way but couldn’t have said it nearly as succinctly as you did.
It’s worth noting that just this morning they announced a retail version of Detective Pikachu for release in March. This sort of thing falls under those small, minimal effort things I was talking about. It’s nice to see another retail game, even if it is just a localization of a game released two years ago in Japan.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Think of this sale as the belated NA version of the EU holiday sale you had. It still doesn't compare given the pages of discounted games the EU sale had, but it's something at least.
@Qun_Mang No way, America gets all the sales. And you get individual 3rd party sales as well. Europe gets shafted all the time.
Got etrian odissey and story of seasons~
Meh, I'm good.
puzzle and dragons and Nintendo rewards equal around 14.40. not bad
I am disappointed that Nintendo did not announce any new 3DS games in the mini Direct, but I expect that there will be some announcements later in the year. I think that the rumors of remakes for Link's Awakening and Wario Land VB on 3DS will prove to be real. They both make sense when you consider the teams that are rumored to be behind them (Grezzo and Skip). On top of that DQ XI, MH Generations, and Yo-Kai Watch 3 will be localized and there will be at least one more first party 3DS game from Nintendo this year.
I expect 2018 will be the last good year for 3DS though.
My definition of "big sale" is obviously a little different from other people's, haha. I would call this a decent sale, at best.
At least a couple of Atlus games are being released, at least in the US (Alliance Alive, Radiant Historia Remake), soon (March?). The 3DS well isn't completely dry . . .yet. I think it's definitely winding down though. Still hoping Atlus makes EO Untold III. :-/
Wow. I already own most of the big ones on here but there are some great deals in this list!
@FinalFrog
I agree. I get that there are lots of people for whom the Switch is their shiny new toy and they cannot imagine why some of us are still happy with the 3DS. However, it is obnoxious that such people keep demanding that Nintendo cut off all support for 3DS and focus 100% on the Switch. For one thing, the Switch is still an expensive machine with expensive games. Not everyone is ready to make that investment yet, especially if they are buying for kids. Secondly, moving the games that they have planned for the 3DS to Switch instead will not help the Switch. Nor would it help Nintendo's bottom line. On the 3DS those games can do decent sales and make a profit. On Switch they would be lost among the bigger and better games, sell poorly, and end up losing money.
There is room in the market for both high end products (Switch) and budget products (3DS). If the only option was Switch, many parents might opt for their kids to play games on tablets instead. I know many parents who feel that $60 is too much for games. Eventually the Switch will come down in price and there will be a selects line of budget games. Until then Nintendo still need the 3DS.
Meh...
@thesilverbrick yea this made me sad (((
I love switch, but ds and 3ds were such a fun to use. Never thought that this handheld line will end
@thehoppypoppy At a recent Japanese event, Atlus said they are creating a new EO for 3DS, but it's not going to be EO3 Untold.
https://gematsu.com/2017/12/new-etrian-odyssey-3ds-announced-spring-2018-not-etrian-odyssey-3-untold
@standalone I felt the same when they dropped the GameBoy line. It was a bummer to lose something I had loved for years but the DS series of consoles was even better. Here’s hoping Nintendo has some great plans for Switch.
@AlphaElite Thanks for the link. More EO is still good news. Still hoping for Untold III to eventually be made before all is said and done though (no harm in hoping).
Pretty eh sales to be honest for most of these games. I own the majority of them physically. The only ones that stand out to me are Hatsune Miku and Professor Layton Azran Legacy. I'll probably get Layton physically even if the cart is kinda expensive. Hatsune Miku is a buy from since that is unexpectedly pricey for a 3ds rhythm game more than 2 years old. The cheapest I could find it was $24.99 on ebay for a loose cart. All the other prices were $45 and up.
@rjejr Good points, though. And a stripped down Switch could definitely save on production costs. But when it comes to a 3DS replacement, I just meant the immediate future. I would love to see what Nintendo could pull off with some more advanced tech. Heck, I've been thinking that Nintendo should make a cell phone that doubles as a portable system. It may slot either existing or it's own game cards. And it would have physical controls somewhere on it, naturally. It should also be able to use the current eShop system in some way. That would be neat!
@masterLEON I've always figured Ninteod would avoid a smartphone of their own due to the liability aspect. Heck, they wont' even let people chat on Switch b/c they don't want the responsibility, you have to get your own smartphone from someone else. And Ntineod is going to start charging for that.
Also, even Amazon couldn't get a smartphone to work and they were selling it for $1 at the end, and people will buy almost anything from Amazon. Blackberry did great w/ phones then they got crushed. MS can't manage to keep a phone business going no matter how many OS they try. Nintneod I doubt will ever even get a chip for data like tablets have, they just don't want to be responsible for either the bills or what kids might do on a phone.
A Nintnedo branded phone has always been a non-starter for me. Well with the exception of Japan. Japan is so wired into cell phones Nintendo could maybe get it to work there w/ not much effort I suppose, but no where else.
Oh, if your new here, apologies for all the Nintendo typos. I don't do it on purpose, I just can't get it right.
May get the Dillon sequel. Was excited to see Fire Emblem on the list but I thought it was the remake...not a fan of Birthright/Conquest.
Lol, 3DS is going to have a weak 2018 release schedule because of a sale in the first half of January......what a stretch.
3DS still lives!
HORRIBLE price on DQ VIII. A physical copy only costs $11.88 at Target.
Maybe I’ll get Link’s Awakening. I can get better deals on most other games in my local store.
@rjejr I just cannot see a new handheld happening. The 3DS is already a portable gamecube or Wii in terms of the kind of games it can handle; I don't see where else they could go without dangerously encroaching on the Switch's market.
I could see a 225 Switch being a thing. Switch, JoyCons, power and you are good. On the box in can just say Switch GO. Maybe they can redesign a cheaper dock and release that separately for when GO owners eventually want to upgrade.
My only fear in this is that we see a Switch Pro at holiday 2019 as a response to the inevitable PS5. Do they sell the tablet as a standalone for early adopters to upgrade or sell the whole package? Maybe they do both? It could lead to a lot of confusion amongst uneducated buyers.
@rjejr LOL! I had to check, but I've been around here since August 2011. And I'm sharing my 700th comment with ya! But looking at the numbers, that's not very frequent activity. And lately it seems I've usually been commenting on Nintendo download articles and reviews. It's no wonder I've flown under your radar. Though your Ntineod's are so common that it doesn't seem weird anymore!
So yeah, it's wishful thinking that Nintendo would come up with a handset. On top of everything, I think it would also need to be the most secure thing on the market to protect their accounts, and to protect the eShop, and the phone itself from getting jailbroken, but good luck with that. Anyway, it's just an idea I've been knocking around, nothing serious.
There are a few games here I wouldn't mind owning, but not at that price (even after discounts).
I feel like the only good discounts are Bravely Second and the Layton games because they never go on sale.
retail is cheaper. No thanks Nintendo
Other than Detective Pikachu, 3DS has no announced retail games from Nintendo - thats crazy. 3DS is clearly on the way out, other than for late localization jobs like the Atlus games and Pikachu.
It'll continue selling like crazy thanks to its library, and Nintendo would be smart to do a much larger Selects range with DS and 3DS games
@patbacknitro That user is VERY resistant to the idea that the 3DS can have a relevant life at retail in 2018.
But the facts are that the 3DS didn't have a bad a year in 2017 as many had predicted. Especially after they pushed the narrative that the Switch would replace that handheld. It didn't.
And we have the numbers to prove it. Here's how many units the 3DS sold in the US market alone by year.
2011 - 4.1 million
2012 - 3.6 million
2013 - 3.8 million
2014 - 2.6 million
2015 - 2.4 million
2016 - 2.5 million
2017 - 2 million
The drop in sales has not been as huge as many thought it sould be. Fact is, the 3DS is still a healthy platform (especially in Japan). And Nintendo will support it with new games in 2018 and beyond.
In for Poochy & Yoshi!!
Finally I'm getting mario maker, which is probably the only other mario game I buy other than oddysey and the galaxys. Thank you for this
@masterLEON Ntineod's
I bet I type that a lot easier than you do, we'll done. 😀
700 comments since 2011? You must be one of those people I read about who have a life. I currently have 5869 notifications, which I think are for unread replies, 17,000+ comments (so average 1,700 a year the past 10 years) and my 700th ago was Oct 24 last year, so like 3 months. And I thought I'd been taking it easy the past 3 months.
Good luck w/ the phone, my teenage sons would each like to have one, maybe in time for our trip to Nintendo World in Universal in a few years. Don't think it will happen, but as a dad I gotta wish for my kids.
@Indielink Not that it really matters but I don't think they'll call it Switch Go b/c PSPgo was such a complete failure, why invoke that name?
I do think they need a Switch w/o Joycon, just 1 piece like a Vita, for parents to buy for little kids who buy licensed games. Nintendo sold the 2DS for $129, $99 and $79. The New 2DS XL is $149 but I think that's b/c they'd rather sell the $300 Switch. But at some point they need a smaller unbreakable device kids can throw in a backpack for less money so parents let them. Not in 2018, but maybe by late 2019 or early 2020, something under $200. SwitchMini maybe?
Ooooooorrrrrrr... they put out enough games on mobile they consider that to be their cheap kids console until the kids are old enough for a Switch. But a lot more than they are doing now, 5 or 6 a year, not 1 or 2. Some of those style and fashion games, even Nintendogs, look like a natural on mobile. AC is there, that's a start. We need Nintendo Badge Arcade on mobile, best advertising they have, that bunny is awesome, we call him Coindexter.
@rjejr I think most people have forgotten the PSPGo even existed. A Switch Mini without removable controllers kind of loses everything about the Switch that makes it the Switch though. At least a dockless SKU has the option of instant two player Mario Kart and table top mode.
I wouldn't be terribly upset if they simply boosted their mobile output.
@Indielink dockless Switch should be the first step towards lowering the price, but I still think they'll have other models down the road. When was the last time Nintendo didn't have various hardware versions going? It may not make any sense to have a Switch where the Joycon don't come off, but a 2DS never made any sense either, except to make it cheaper. Switch Micro?
@rjejr I think the 2DS was Nintendo realizing that 3D was a gimmick and an incredibly easy way to cut the price. As it is, Nintendo is leaning VERY hard into splitting JoyCon off for multiplayer and I think no JoyCon is taking too much from that vision.
Gameboy Micro was amazing and I will not hear any word otherwise. I want to see BoTW on a screen that size.
@Indielink Well the thing is, even if Nintendo makes a Switch Micro they can still sell separate Joycon to those who want them. Or a separate Micro dock. Or a Pro. Or a charging stand for tabletop with the Pro. The Wii U Game pad has built in controls but you can still use a Pro or Wiimotes.
So I think that's a few years out, they will keep focusing on the Joycon multilayer for now. But for a guy likes me who only plays single player games like Mario or Zelda, I don't need them. Heck, a very small part of me still expects a SwitchTV, like the ShieldTV it is based on. No screen, just a very small home console the size of a Roku. Not as small as a PSTV, maybe the dock. They may never need it, but nobody ever needed that PSTV either. I own one for PS4 streaming, so there's that. 😆
@onex Ok fanboy.
@Dtbahoney HAHAHA good comeback.
By the way, I spent all weekend playing games on PC, and I also own a PS4. But if you don't understand how value works, that's on you, boy.
@masterLEON I ended up getting RPG Maker Fes. It's very fun, but the only issue I have with it is that you don't get any feedback at all from people who downloaded your game, or even find out if anybody did
@ALinkttPresent Yeah, it's like a black hole of game creation. I wonder if there's a curated list or someone out there reviewing RPG Maker Fes creations?
