Speaking of Nintendo and Mamma Mia, I watched the “Mamma Mia - Made in Sweden for Export” ABBA music video on YouTube yesterday and now I’m convinced that Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Princess Daisy were all inspired directly from that video. It is from 1975, before any of those characters existed.
I bought Rise about a month ahead of Wilds in order to get my Monster Hunter skills up to speed. Both were played on PS5 Pro. I think I enjoyed Rise more, but I found Wilds to be a pretty solid experience. It makes sense that Rise has shifted more copies since it runs on more hardware and it’s usually on steep discounts. I picked it up for $15 and that included the DLC.
DQ 7 and DQ 1&2 are the only games on the horizon that interest me. Guess it’s good that I have WoW Classic to fill my gaming time. It is beginning to feel like 20 years ago when I abandoned my gaming consoles for MMOs on PC. That lasted until about 2017 when Breath of the Wild brought me back.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that needs to be on physical media in order to keep the little ones from accessing it. If you don’t have kids in the house, digital is fine.
IP logs of those who used the site are also likely being investigated.
This is why I constantly warn my teenage son against downloading or sharing software such as ROMs or other copyrighted software. He is big into PC stuff and I hope he doesn’t stray into such activities. But at least he’s at his mom’s house now, using her internet IP.
I was originally planning to get a Switch 2. My name is still on the waitlist on Nintendo’s website. But I think I am going to hold off for a while, mostly due to a lack of games that I must have. If Switch 2 editions of Xenoblade Chronicles release, I’ll be more tempted. But at this point I’m pretty happy to wait for an OLED.
I believe Bethesda did something similar with the world map going back to Oblivion and then subsequent games. Game artists then go back in and touch everything up and give it the necessary polish and such.
It looks really good, like PS4 Pro, but with NS2’s faster data read, which is exactly what Cyberpunk 2077 needs.
I played my first 40 hours of CP2077 on PS4 Pro. The biggest issue was data just didn’t seem to be able to stream in consistently fast enough. It looked good otherwise.
Then I played another 100 hours on an older PC that had a SSD and it was far more stable.
I’ve since played another 383 hours on PS5, which has been wonderful.
Switch 1 was never my primary gaming system, so it’s unchanged for me. The Switch has always been my Zelda and Xenoblade console. Switch 2 will be my better-performing Zelda and Xenoblade console.
When a new console launches, there are usually only a handful of absolutely must-buys. Expedition 33 could be one of the games that everyone with a shiny new Switch 2 wants to play.
I don’t think the higher prices will affect me too much. The only games I buy at launch must be something that I just cannot wait for, which is not too often. Most of my backlog are games bought on the PlayStation store sales for $20-30.
Games I will buy day one are usually exclusives like Zelda, Xenoblade, or other first party titles. You can usually count on 3rd party games, even really good ones, to be heavily discounted within a few months.
I just completed all 13 chapters and am now working my way through all the other quests and content that I didn’t get around to. The hour count has passed 150 on my save file.
You could finish all 13 MSQ chapters far sooner if you rush it. I chose to do as much exploration and side quests as I could find along the way, intentionally drawing the game out as long as I could.
Now in the post-chapter 13 save file, I am ramping up my power and saving up to have a fleet of the super skells.
I believe that I can stretch another 50 hours of gameplay before I put it down.
Maybe I am in the minority, or old and just not as passionate as younger gamers, but the game key card is fine for me. I would definitely prefer to have the full and ready-to-play game on the card, but this option is better in cases where I may want to let my son play the game on his system, which I can’t with a download.
I would say that the Xeno-verse is the superior JRPG collection. Yes, better than Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Xenogears was amazing on PS1, and Xenosaga was great on PS2.
I was very late to the Xenoblade Chronicles series, though I always meant to check it out. When I finally got through my backlog in 2022 and played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I was blown away and wondered why I waited so long. Then I got Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and loved it, followed by Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which was the icing on the cake. After 3, I hooked up my WiiU and bought X, and just bought Definitive Edition at launch.
There is nothing close to this series when it comes to the characters, story, and interesting worlds to explore. I’m reminded of how I felt growing up with classic Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Lufia, and other SNES gems.
Xenoblade just captures the magic better than other modern JRPGs.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that needs high speed asset streaming to function well and look good. This is why it was a terrible idea to even offer it on the PS4. I did own the PS4 version, and played it from a SSD on PS4 Pro, which worked well enough.
When I got the free PS5 upgrade, the game was more stable and looked prettier.
I imagine that the Switch 2 version will be similar to PS4 specs, but will run better because it’s not running on an old spinning HDD. Cyberpunk 2077 is up there on my all-time favorites list, so I recommend it to anyone who likes exploring open worlds.
I love Cyberpunk 2077 on my PS5. The file size is much higher than 64gb, so I am guessing that the resolution assets are much lower on Switch 2 to save space and boost performance. Maybe some Nvidia upscaling and frame generation will make the game feel close to its PC and big console counterparts.
If I were an unemployed young person like my son, I would be more alarmed about the prices. But I was once his age in the mid-90s, and many Super Nintendo games like Final Fantasy III (6) , Chrono Trigger, 7th Saga, and Ogre Battle cost more than $80 back then, amounting to around $170 in today’s money. People didn’t talk about their backlog because they didn’t own as many games. It’s reasonable to say that games were complete and physical copies on expensive cartridges should cost more than a digital download. All I am saying is that people have become very accustomed to really cheap games, so prices moving up will cause initial shock. The most likely scenario will be people choosing their purchases more carefully and waiting for sales.
@Gryffin Yes. I was an RPG nerd as a teenager, and my games were always so expensive. It was so annoying to see my games between $75-95 and the sports game next to it in the display case for $45-55.
I’m already planning on buying upgrades for the entire Xenoblade series and Zelda games.
From what I understand, Switch games will not run natively on Switch 2 hardware, but will go through a translation layer. It sounds similar to how Macs with Apple silicon run X86 programs through Rosetta 2 with very little performance loss in most cases.
I’m guessing that Switch 2 Edition games will be native code to the hardware, so we will likely need to download the full game, even if it is an upgrade purchase.
I remember paying $85 for Chrono Trigger, $80 for Final Fantasy III (6), and $80 for Ogre Battle on SNES, and $90 for Phantasy Star IV on Sega Genesis. That was in late ‘90s money, paid for by saving up birthday cash and doing jobs around the house.
It seems inevitable that prices are going up. I rarely pay full price for games these days because sales are so frequent on Steam and PlayStation. Good Nintendo games are rarely discounted though.
I own Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam and PS5. If it runs well on Switch 2, then it looks like a 3rd purchase is inevitable. Cyberpunk is one of my all-time favorites and I have played through many times to experience the various styles and to explore what is one of the best open worlds available.
@JumpingJackson yes, I agree with this. Let me buy it and ship it to me when it’s available.
I still remember the terrible experience trying to find a PS5 at launch. It took me 3 months of hitting every restock and desperately putting in my purchase details on websites, only to have my cart come back empty because they sold out before I could finish the order. People were scalping those for 2x or more the price.
I would prefer being able to buy mine directly from Nintendo, as I just did with Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition. Seems like making a Nintendo account mandatory and limiting one per customer would ease scalping a bit.
I am 100 hours into the game, completing everything possible before progressing the main story quests as much as possible. As an owner of the WiiU original, I wanted to slow down and see everything. The only thing stopping me from a perfect 10 on this game is the music, especially NLA. Other than that, I love the MMO-like gameplay and quests.
I have been on staycation this past week. In that time I have been playing lots of Xenoblade Chronicles X. This time I am making sure to complete as many of the quests as possible before progressing the main story. 70 hours in and I just now got flight mode because I am enjoying the journey and exploring everything I can.
I’m 100% in agreement. As someone who grew up playing Nintendo when almost all games were Japanese, they seemed more fun back then, and less like social commentary.
I bought the WiiU version just a month or so before the online server shut down a few years back, so I could see avatars of other players standing around. Then they were gone and I could only play the offline features.

The characters and story are not great by 1-3 standards, but it is still better than what I just experienced in Monster Hunter Wilds. Some games are more about gameplay and exploration, and X definitely succeeds there.
Both of these games arrived in my mid to late teenage years on PS1. Suikoden 1 was a pleasant surprise in those days when I was yearning for some Super Nintendo style 2D RPGs. Then when Suikoden 2 landed during my senior year of high school, I was so excited and not disappointed by a moment of it. These 2 are at the pinnacle of 2D turn based RPGs for me.
I appreciate my Switch very much, having been one of 5 lucky people who were in line early enough on launch day at Best Buy to get one. My best time with the console have been Zelda BotW and TotK, and Xenoblade Chronicles 1-3, with Xenoblade X coming soon and likely my final game to played on the ol’ girl before I press the power button off for the last time.
Aside from those games, I really didn’t use the Switch in comparison to PS4 and PS5. Since I am a 95% docked mode guy, if a game is multi platform I always choose the more powerful system.
I will be getting Switch 2 as soon as I can, and I am guessing that the majority of my time with it will be console-exclusives, and hopefully better performing versions of the games I mentioned above.
Over this past weekend I had the chance to play the Monster Hunter Wilds beta on both PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X. Why both? The PSN outage that started Friday night through half of Saturday lead me to download it on my Xbox. The good news is that the game looks pretty good in performance mode on PS5 Pro even without the upcoming PS5 Pro patch at launch. The strange news is that the same performance mode on Xbox Series X looked much lower resolution and had a weird sort of texture on the character models. It’s difficult to explain, but it does not exist on the PS5 version.
The bad news is that I can’t see how this game would work on the Switch 2. It’s made for powerful hardware, and even the Series X seems to struggle, maybe because of optimization.
@Banjo- I am reading this comment after starting a new play through of RDR2, and the part about Zelda being sterile is pretty accurate. The world of RDR2 is expansive and interesting like Zelda open worlds, but the characters and writing are leagues above. Xenoblade Chronicles X is also like RDR2 to a lesser extent. I’m not sure if mechs or horses are better.
This game will vacuum up much of my free time very soon.
I bought it on WiiU right at the end of support for the online functionality, so I didn’t get to experience any of that. Switch will undoubtedly breath a lot of life into the online experience.
Switch 2 is the best decision Nintendo has made in console-naming since Switch. Everyone, even Grandma knows that the 2 means it’s the new version. SwitchU would have been confusing.
Time feels so unreal because I remember the Switch reveal like it was a few weeks ago, only to realize it's been about 8 years. I'll probably be able to pick up the next one on launch morning by waiting outside of Best Buy again like last time. They open later than competitors.
