Re: Baldo Is What You Get When You Mix The Legend Of Zelda With Ni no Kuni

8bit4Life

Looks like playing a gorgeous Studio Ghibli movie. I’ll likely buy it, but will have to choose between Switch or PS4 Pro. Since I rarely use my Switch in portable mode, it will likely be the latter if it’s available in 4K or takes advantage of the additional power in some other way.

If the versions are identical, I would probably choose Switch.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - This Is How You Handle A Remaster

8bit4Life

@invictus4000 I mostly agree with you. FFXII is one of the better games in the series and I enjoyed it much more than 10 or 13. FFXIV actually feels like a spiritual successor to FFXII in everything from the art cues and the story. It is an MMO, though, which puts it into a different place.

FFXV is actually pretty good if you’re not playing it as a Final Fantasy game. By that I mean FFXV is a great action RPG with a touching bro story, and tidbits of Final Fantasy flavor mixed in.

Re: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

8bit4Life

If I had not already purchased this updated version of FFXII on PS4, I would be buying this on day 1. Speaking based on the PS4 version, it’s a great update to the presentation and gameplay. Dip into this game if you are hungry for a long adventure with great characters and a darker plot than many entries in the series.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster - Two Games In One Remarkable Switch Collection

8bit4Life

I bought FFX on PS2 at original release and although I enjoyed some aspects, such as the music and summons, this was never one of my favorites in the series. The setting and weird characters were off-putting to me, as I’ve always preferred the steampunk/high fantasy entries better. That said, I have purchased the HD remakes on PS4, but haven’t made much of an effort to play them yet.

FFXII, although also wildly different with its MMO-esque world and gameplay, was far more appealing to me. Tidus and Vaan both win awards for being annoying protagonists that are easily forgotten.

Re: Review: Cuphead - The Xbox Masterpiece Becomes An Essential Purchase On Switch

8bit4Life

I have wanted to play Cuphead ever since I saw it revealed on Xbox, but I am a PS4 guy. However, many of us own a PS4 or Xbox, and a Switch.

Now that Cuphead is on Switch, I can finally play this amazing game. After several minutes (as of this writing) I can say that it is fun, but difficult. It’s forcing me to remember how to play platforming games again. As a kid on the NES, I was pro with Mega Man II and the Castlevania series, but modern games have removed much of the challenge. Cuphead brings it back with a vengeance.

The art and music are beautiful. I hope to stick with this game though the end!

Re: Dragon Quest X Could Make It To The West As An Offline Version

8bit4Life

@subpopz Actually, I played most of Final Fantasy XIV solo purely for the story and questing content. The only time I chose to play with other people was when dungeon quests forced me to in order to progress. It’s completely viable as an offline game with the necessary adjustments to replacing party members with NPCs. It would take a bit of programming to get roles to behave according to existing boss patterns, but not impossible.

You are not wrong that such a game would feel a lot more empty. There would be no people standing around cities doing their things, or talking in general chat. I was always one to ignore that anyway and go about my activities.

I’m willing to give up that portion if I could just enjoy the main quest and other solo content, along with whatever NPC-filled groups could accomplish in dungeons.

Older MMOs might not work as well in such conversions. That being said, it makes me happy that the developers are thinking about it.

Re: Dragon Quest X Could Make It To The West As An Offline Version

8bit4Life

I am all for offline versions of MMOs.

That may be a controversial thing to say, but I am burnt-out on them after playing multiple MMOs since EverQuest in 2001. However, the stories are usually pretty good, which is the only reason I occasionally dip in to FFXIV every couple years.

If players enjoy the community and companionship and working together as a team, MMOs are perfect. If players would rather avoid others and be able to play through most of the same content alone and at their own pace, an offline option would be perfect. It wouldn’t be impossible to add NPC party members to fill the roles of players in most dungeon content for a game like FFXIV or presumably DQX.

Let me buy the offline version and expansions. The Patches would probably be DLC since you could not charge a subscription for an offline game. That would be totally acceptable.

Re: Video: Check Out Assassin's Creed Odyssey Running On Nintendo Switch

8bit4Life

I look at this as a beta test in the ever-progressing march towards game streaming as the dominant method. Game streaming will be as commonplace as Netflix is today.

We are still a few years away from this, but once 5G wireless in-home internet and 5G mobile are commonplace, streaming games may be possible on your Switch (2023) while riding the bus.

Re: Sony Responds To Nintendo's Success With Its Very Own PlayStation Classic Mini Console

8bit4Life

It would be nice to experience PS1 games without the horrible CD load times, especially in turn-based RPGs where you would hear the disc mechanism every time a random encounter starts.

That said, I owned a PS1 and played it a lot. Even in those days, the graphics seemed kind of awful, so I’m not sure that I would be able to enjoy these games again in the same way as classic pixel art games.

Who else remembers being blown away at how much better PS2 looked when it launched? Metal Gear Solid 2 seemed like a miracle of technology at the time. We don’t get such big generational leaps anymore between consoles or PC games.

Re: Switch eShop Maintenance Scheduled For This Evening, Nintendo Online Service Ready To Go

8bit4Life

I pay for PlayStation Plus and have played years of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Not to mention Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

What I’m getting at is that subscription services are increasingly becoming the norm. $20 for a year is dirt-cheap by any standard. I understand that many Nintendo players are younger and may not have income, but it will probably be $25 or $30 next year. That’s how these things work.

We got 1.5 years free already while Nintendo payed for the server infrastructure. It’s not something that we think about, but data centers aren’t cheap. Sometimes subscription fees help to keep your favorite game companies afloat.

Re: Editorial: Mandatory Memory Cards for Switch Retail Games is a Messy Solution

8bit4Life

@Drommajin Yeah, it is crappy for a console maker in 2017 to offer 32GB of storage as the default. It is similar to Apple making the base storage 16GB in iPhones up until the iPhone7, which I believe was 32GB base. The pay more to get more approach is fine, but I wish companies would at least offer a usable amount of space with the initial offering. This is more true with Nintendo in this situation since console games on average require more space than phone apps.

Re: Editorial: Mandatory Memory Cards for Switch Retail Games is a Messy Solution

8bit4Life

I saw this coming from afar before I owned a Switch. As a PS4 and PC gamer in addition to my Switch, I knew that modern games would struggle to fit in the limited onboard and cartridge solutions. My first purchase (in addition to Zelda) was a 128GB microSD. Sadly, I realize that many gamers have trouble affording the extras and I hope that future Switch models bump the storage to at least 64GB internally.

Re: Deals: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games and Accessories for September and October

8bit4Life

As an Amazon Prime member, I can receive the pre-order discounts on physical Switch games, but I prefer to download the games. I know that I"m probably in the minority, at least so far as Nintendo gamers are concerned, because a lot of people enjoy the physical media. However, I love the added convenience of not needing to insert a different game; just hit the home button and select what you wish to play. It is for this reason that my only physical Switch game will remain Zelda and it will never leave the console. It's too bad that we downloaders cannot get the pre-order discount.

Re: Guide: All The Splatoon 2 amiibo Unlocks

Argh, the Nintendo Switch has turned me into an Amiibo buyer! This never happened before, but now I want them and search every store that I go to in hopes of finding one that I need. I refuse to pay inflated eBay or Amazon seller prices.

Re: Nintendo's Harshest Critic Thinks Switch Will Outsell Microsoft's Scorpio

8bit4Life

His analysis described me perfectly. I already own a PS4 so there is very little reason for me to buy a XBOX because they are mostly the same thing. The Nintendo Switch exists on the periphery, blurring the console line. It really isn't trying to replace the mega-consoles, but supplements and fills out your gaming portfolio. That said, I love the Switch and place it as my favorite current console.

Re: Nintendo is Reportedly Taking 'Final Orders' on Wii U Consoles From Retailers

8bit4Life

This is sad, but inevitable. I finally purchased a WiiU about 1 year ago and it has been my go-to console in place of my PS3 and PS4, or even gaming PC in many instances. For the longest time, I was bitten by the hardware/graphics numbers of other consoles and looked down my nose at Nintendo's systems. This was a mistake and I'll be purchasing a NX as soon as I can get my hands on one.
