I was able to play for about 20 minutes before work and now I must wait all day to get home for more. During this time, I will decide which house to play first, but am leaning towards team yellow.
Looks like playing a gorgeous Studio Ghibli movie. I’ll likely buy it, but will have to choose between Switch or PS4 Pro. Since I rarely use my Switch in portable mode, it will likely be the latter if it’s available in 4K or takes advantage of the additional power in some other way.
If the versions are identical, I would probably choose Switch.
@invictus4000 I mostly agree with you. FFXII is one of the better games in the series and I enjoyed it much more than 10 or 13. FFXIV actually feels like a spiritual successor to FFXII in everything from the art cues and the story. It is an MMO, though, which puts it into a different place.
FFXV is actually pretty good if you’re not playing it as a Final Fantasy game. By that I mean FFXV is a great action RPG with a touching bro story, and tidbits of Final Fantasy flavor mixed in.
If I had not already purchased this updated version of FFXII on PS4, I would be buying this on day 1. Speaking based on the PS4 version, it’s a great update to the presentation and gameplay. Dip into this game if you are hungry for a long adventure with great characters and a darker plot than many entries in the series.
I bought FFX on PS2 at original release and although I enjoyed some aspects, such as the music and summons, this was never one of my favorites in the series. The setting and weird characters were off-putting to me, as I’ve always preferred the steampunk/high fantasy entries better. That said, I have purchased the HD remakes on PS4, but haven’t made much of an effort to play them yet.
FFXII, although also wildly different with its MMO-esque world and gameplay, was far more appealing to me. Tidus and Vaan both win awards for being annoying protagonists that are easily forgotten.
I have wanted to play Cuphead ever since I saw it revealed on Xbox, but I am a PS4 guy. However, many of us own a PS4 or Xbox, and a Switch.
Now that Cuphead is on Switch, I can finally play this amazing game. After several minutes (as of this writing) I can say that it is fun, but difficult. It’s forcing me to remember how to play platforming games again. As a kid on the NES, I was pro with Mega Man II and the Castlevania series, but modern games have removed much of the challenge. Cuphead brings it back with a vengeance.
The art and music are beautiful. I hope to stick with this game though the end!
@subpopz Actually, I played most of Final Fantasy XIV solo purely for the story and questing content. The only time I chose to play with other people was when dungeon quests forced me to in order to progress. It’s completely viable as an offline game with the necessary adjustments to replacing party members with NPCs. It would take a bit of programming to get roles to behave according to existing boss patterns, but not impossible.
You are not wrong that such a game would feel a lot more empty. There would be no people standing around cities doing their things, or talking in general chat. I was always one to ignore that anyway and go about my activities.
I’m willing to give up that portion if I could just enjoy the main quest and other solo content, along with whatever NPC-filled groups could accomplish in dungeons.
Older MMOs might not work as well in such conversions. That being said, it makes me happy that the developers are thinking about it.
That may be a controversial thing to say, but I am burnt-out on them after playing multiple MMOs since EverQuest in 2001. However, the stories are usually pretty good, which is the only reason I occasionally dip in to FFXIV every couple years.
If players enjoy the community and companionship and working together as a team, MMOs are perfect. If players would rather avoid others and be able to play through most of the same content alone and at their own pace, an offline option would be perfect. It wouldn’t be impossible to add NPC party members to fill the roles of players in most dungeon content for a game like FFXIV or presumably DQX.
Let me buy the offline version and expansions. The Patches would probably be DLC since you could not charge a subscription for an offline game. That would be totally acceptable.
I look at this as a beta test in the ever-progressing march towards game streaming as the dominant method. Game streaming will be as commonplace as Netflix is today.
We are still a few years away from this, but once 5G wireless in-home internet and 5G mobile are commonplace, streaming games may be possible on your Switch (2023) while riding the bus.
I’ve bought SEGA collections in the past, but almost never play them. My nostalgia is in NES/SNES, but I do cherish the memories of middle school lunch table wars between Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis families. I will continue to buy the collections to keep the memories alive.
It would be nice to experience PS1 games without the horrible CD load times, especially in turn-based RPGs where you would hear the disc mechanism every time a random encounter starts.
That said, I owned a PS1 and played it a lot. Even in those days, the graphics seemed kind of awful, so I’m not sure that I would be able to enjoy these games again in the same way as classic pixel art games.
Who else remembers being blown away at how much better PS2 looked when it launched? Metal Gear Solid 2 seemed like a miracle of technology at the time. We don’t get such big generational leaps anymore between consoles or PC games.
I pay for PlayStation Plus and have played years of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Not to mention Spotify, Apple Music, etc.
What I’m getting at is that subscription services are increasingly becoming the norm. $20 for a year is dirt-cheap by any standard. I understand that many Nintendo players are younger and may not have income, but it will probably be $25 or $30 next year. That’s how these things work.
We got 1.5 years free already while Nintendo payed for the server infrastructure. It’s not something that we think about, but data centers aren’t cheap. Sometimes subscription fees help to keep your favorite game companies afloat.
@PanurgeJr I generally agree and don’t care for free to play. My favorite games on iOS/Android are Dragon Quest ports which weren’t cheap as far as apps go.
That being said, free to play does work if the content is great and if people have a compelling reason to spend money on in-game items. Examples would be Pokémon Go or Fortnite.
I'm enjoying the game quite a bit, but taking it at a slow pace. Like Zelda BotW, I'm avoiding spoilers and playing it as I would have in the early 90s with no internet guides.
I pre-ordered on Amazon Prime and got it on launch day. It’s been a lovely adventure so far! I’m taking my time and avoiding any spoilers, and it is hitting all of the right RPG nostalgia high notes for me.
We already a female 'Link' and her name is Aloy. Go play Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's really good. She isn't a silent protagonist though, which takes a little of the Link aspect away.
These products seem like they'll be very collectible and desirable a decade or two, maybe three into the future. How many people will keep them in good condition, or unopened and sitting on a shelf until some buyer wants one in 2042?
They're made of cardboard. Most of them will not last.
I really hope that these are not as impossible to buy as many of Nintendo's recent products, including the Switch itself, NES/SNES Classics, or perhaps even popular Amiibo characters. Probably a smart idea to pre-order because we know what scalpers do!
@Jeronan I didn't think that I would enjoy FFXV, but by the end, it was pretty good. Yeah, the story is up to FF weird standards, but the best part about it is the bond with the characters. Also, I played FFXIV for years and agree that it's better.
@Drommajin Yeah, it is crappy for a console maker in 2017 to offer 32GB of storage as the default. It is similar to Apple making the base storage 16GB in iPhones up until the iPhone7, which I believe was 32GB base. The pay more to get more approach is fine, but I wish companies would at least offer a usable amount of space with the initial offering. This is more true with Nintendo in this situation since console games on average require more space than phone apps.
I saw this coming from afar before I owned a Switch. As a PS4 and PC gamer in addition to my Switch, I knew that modern games would struggle to fit in the limited onboard and cartridge solutions. My first purchase (in addition to Zelda) was a 128GB microSD. Sadly, I realize that many gamers have trouble affording the extras and I hope that future Switch models bump the storage to at least 64GB internally.
As an Amazon Prime member, I can receive the pre-order discounts on physical Switch games, but I prefer to download the games. I know that I"m probably in the minority, at least so far as Nintendo gamers are concerned, because a lot of people enjoy the physical media. However, I love the added convenience of not needing to insert a different game; just hit the home button and select what you wish to play. It is for this reason that my only physical Switch game will remain Zelda and it will never leave the console. It's too bad that we downloaders cannot get the pre-order discount.
Argh, the Nintendo Switch has turned me into an Amiibo buyer! This never happened before, but now I want them and search every store that I go to in hopes of finding one that I need. I refuse to pay inflated eBay or Amazon seller prices.
I play FFXIV mostly on PC, but also sometimes on my PS4. It would be very interesting to see it on my Switch, but I'm assuming that the graphics settings would be toned down considerably. However, with the artstyle of this game, you don't need hyper-realistic settings. It's a very anime-esque art.
ARMS is pretty fun. I played the 8:00 PM session on Friday night in the USA. I haven't found a favorite yet, but I am leaning towards Springman or the ninja.
Samus can climb on any surface. Instead of gradually obtaining power-ups, she gets them nearly at the start. Since Samus can fall from any height without taking damage, she has no need for any type of glider.
Nintendo would probably do well to re-release Twilight Princess HD and Windwaker HD on the Switch. The same logic applies that not many people played the WiiU versions, so they would probably sell respectably. Also, it might give players another chance to grab a Wolf Link Amiibo!
I would love a sequel or prequel to Chrono Trigger. Yeah, we had Chrono Cross, but how about another one? Also, it would be really cool if it were kept in hand-drawn 2D.
His analysis described me perfectly. I already own a PS4 so there is very little reason for me to buy a XBOX because they are mostly the same thing. The Nintendo Switch exists on the periphery, blurring the console line. It really isn't trying to replace the mega-consoles, but supplements and fills out your gaming portfolio. That said, I love the Switch and place it as my favorite current console.
Miyamoto-san is one of those rare visionaries that can change the course of an industry. He's like Steve Jobs was to Apple. I wonder how much longer we will have him around and what will become of the big N once the genius isn't able to shine his brilliance?
I'll probably play Super Mario Run just out of tribute to the man.
This is sad, but inevitable. I finally purchased a WiiU about 1 year ago and it has been my go-to console in place of my PS3 and PS4, or even gaming PC in many instances. For the longest time, I was bitten by the hardware/graphics numbers of other consoles and looked down my nose at Nintendo's systems. This was a mistake and I'll be purchasing a NX as soon as I can get my hands on one.

Re: Nintendo Switch Lite Officially Revealed, Launches This September
This is a great option for people who prefer to play handheld most of the time. My son has a Switch, but rarely uses it on the TV.
I am on the other end, almost never playing handheld, so I would be more interested in a more powerful docked Switch.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - This Is How You Handle A Remaster
I think I must be a sucker for the oppressive empire storylines. My favorite Final Fantasy is 6, followed by 4, 12, then 14.
4 arguably wasn’t an oppressive empire, but it it walked the line.
