As far as problems go, having too many great games isn't a bad one to have, but recent weeks on the Switch have made it a reality for the system's fans. Nintendo's own efforts aside, we're seeing more and more third party support with each month, and that's not even getting into the indie scene.
The ever-growing list of games is reaching pleasing heights for a system so early on in its life, especially by Nintendo standards, so your average player is never going to be able to play a majority of the games available. Not that Nintendo makes it easy with its frustratingly limited eShop design.
Make sure you check out the video above in which we chat a bit about this, and let us know whether you think there are 'too many games' to keep up with on Switch.

And the most sought-after games will still not show up as third parties scramble to come up with more fun excuses to add to their dart board of reasons they can't support Switch.
Not enough games on past systems, too many on Switch.
We're never just happy. XD
Keep em coming. Something for everyone and everyone has something
All good , apart from my wallet can't keep up now:)
84 games! That's a lot. I really stopped buying games after realizing that I just won't be able to play them...
You don't have to buy "all" the Switch games...I think most people pick and choose.
There can never be too many good games.
I've been working on Stardew and Xenoverse 2. But I'm not overwhelmed...yet.
This week starts the deluge - FE Warriors, Mario, Nights of Azure 2, Doom, Skyrim, LA Noire, Sonic, and a few others. On PS4, all I have in comparison to get are Mordor, Assassin's Creed, and Battlefront 2. Switch's fall is amazing to me
@Jamaal121 DOES NOT COMPUTE <EXPLODES>
I just think this can be easily solved by having a MUCH better eshop layout. If it were organised into different genres, each with a best selling list, or with indie games as a separate category to 3rd party AAA games, gamers could find what they want immediately, and so the too many games thing wouldn't be a problem. Also a demos list. As it stands though, the couple of lists on the eshop don't differentiate between games, and so it just becomes flooded, and many games get pushed to the bottom never to be seen again. It needs to be sorted out quickly for the system's eshop to thrive.
I'd say so far the only real must have original games are Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Sonic Mania. The true real first mega blockbuster to come out is Super Mario Odyssey, 8 months after launch. For me, there aren't too many great games on Switch.
I’m partially through Mario Kart, Zelda, and Pokken Tournament. I plan on getting Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Metroid Prime 4 2017/2018. Wife plays Zelda mostly, so I find other games to play. But yeah too many great games, that’s a very good problem to have!
Great video, and so true about the eShop. It's a dart throw and I cannot tell you how many times I've had problems finding a specific game.
I haven’t finished the Zelda DLC or Mario + Rabbids. I broke down and got Stardew Valley which is great. Mario is on the horizon. Just finished Iron cast. Going to get Skyrim but hold till Christmas to open, Doom will have to wait till next year. The next round of Zelda DLC is coming soon. I’m buried in games. Good deal.
You can search by genre. For example...go look at the first person shooter genre..."No results found". So yeah, Bethesda know what they are doing lol.
What we would have given for a headline like that during the dark wii u days.
More games gives more variety and more choice which can only be a good thing
I'd still like more great games
The important thing is that there's enough games to keep everyone satisfied.
Of course, more games will release as time progresses. We'll see far more 3rd party support in years 2 and 3 than we've seen in year 1.
I'm completely satisfied with the lineup thus far. Fire Emblem Warriors, Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 all releasing within the time span of a month? Ya, that'll work.
When Nintendo said no more droughts they really meant it.
Crazy amount of releases for switch.
Didn't you mean "Too many overpriced ports"?
Ooook seriously. I have bought way too much on the Switch. But still a fair amount that don't look that great to me. It does seem quite counter-productive for all these indies releasing games on the same days as each other.
Maybe Nintendolife could help by coming up with a separate rotating list of games you'd recommend. Sure, there's a review section but few people access those. A dedicated section on the front page with underrated games would be a nice way to help indies... Or maybe that's what ads are for?
@Al_Godoy I went through the list a while ago. At the 6 month mark, there were 96 games I think. I'll find the post.
Edit: Here's the post.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/10/injustice_2_director_on_the_possibility_of_bringing_the_game_to_switch#comment4165791
It was 128 games. 96 were digital.
The problem in my opinion is that there is basically almost nothing if you have a Wii U and a PS4. I was looking for eshop switch exclusives. They are few.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE @Al_Godoy According to the UK eShop there is 178 titles on the Switch (including the two released today).
I fight the problem of too many games by busing only/(mostly) physical releases. Want to avoid to have many games that i never play.
Picking up FE: Warriors on Friday. Have Mario O. and Skyrim pre-ordered. Might also get Mario + Rabbids- have to check the reviews first.
sure tons of games, but a ton are indy (not that those are bad, but they are limited) and a ton more are ports or re-releases. Not unusual for the first year, but I feel like we're in some serious self-back-patting group think here.
those of you who frequent other game sites (i don't) - is the buzz actually positive about switch, or are we just looking for things to be happy about because this site is called nintendolife?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE For you, there aren't too many great games on Switch. Fortunately, only for you.
I agree. Too many games, not enough time and money for all the ones I want.
Almost finished with the main story on Mario + Rabbids. I've still got Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Steamworld Dig 2 to play through and I'm not entirely done with Zelda.
That's before taking other platforms into account. Still need to finish Yakuza 0 on PS4 and need to play through Pokemon Gold on 3DS.
Need to pick up Golf Story, Stardew Valley, and Axiom Verge still.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE why do you always seem so doom & gloom 🤣
Being spoiled by third parties and first alike for the first time in a year which hasn't been seen on the TV side since the SNES period — IS NOT A PROBLEM. I hope we start all having that as a problem.
You want a problem, the lousy eshop setup. Once a game has been on it long enough it drops off unless you search damn near almost by name to find it. I'd be pissed off and offended if I had a game on there no one could find as you don't get paid.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE yeah... and I have like 16 games or so, I got my Switch in june. And I am fine...
Anybody know how to add more hours to the day? I can't finish my games in a timely fashion.
No. This is not a problem. The Switch has a lot of good games and this is not a problem. There's no way it can be.
@JSG87 I'm not, it's just how I see things. As a Wii U owner, many of the games don't count, the biggest being BOTW and MK8D. There's countless other Wii U ports. 1,2 Switch is garbage, ARMS looks boring and Splatoon 2 looks like a remix(I played the original to death, great game). There's been very little 3rd party support. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 should be another great addition. I'm sure many others are happy and good for them. Like I said, it's just not brilliant for me.
@speedracer216 I’ve been thinking the same thing. No one ever seems willing to criticise the Switch on this site.
I think the Switch is OK but not great for me so far. I’m mainly playing the mini SNES instead.
All in all, not a bad start. If I had my way, 2018 would be the year of 2nd tier 1st party releases (Yoshi, Kirby, etc.) and top tier third party surprises (GTA 5, something Dark Souls related, Fallout 4, etc.). I love that Bethesda is stepping up their game, and I'm excited to see what other developers have in store, in response to the success of the Switch.
the problem is that all the good 3rd party games have been on Steam for longer and much cheaper.
It's not a question of too many games but too little money that's the problem and unless I set up some kind of ponzy scheme, one that won't be going away anytime soon.
@Wichtel
With that strategy, you will miss out on games like Steamworld Dig 2... which is an absolute must play if you have any interest in exploration-platforming games... I didn't know how fun it would be until I got Dig 1 for free on 3DS and Dig 2 is even better.
I think the number of games is just about right... not so many that I can't sift through and research the ones that interest me each week or so... and plenty to keep me busy.
My gaming style makes Nintendo and indie titles the perfect fit... Indie games for inexpensive fun with a lot of soul and no pointless filler to make the game longer in order to justify a higher price. Nintendo games for epic adventures and/or replay value.
Also... it looks like it will be the machine for local co-op, which is great.
Love the artwork behind Alex in the video, particularly the weird blob guy from ARMS.
It’s not a problem. Nintendo have got it right this time so let’s just enjoy it for years to come.
Count of games!
14 retail games
12 digital games
Ton of neo-geo games
Thats just 2017... and I don't even own a Switch
@yeayeanaynay It doesn't, since when? I've said numerous times, "for me". Why can't people just accept that? I also wrote, good for those who think there's more. The people who skipped the Wii U will find a lot more to enjoy. But I could say to those people, where were you?
@speedracer216
Some fair points. I can't speak for everybody, but for me personally, I'm critical when something deserves to be critical of. We had a lot of that going around in the Wii U days.
Even if I find this video a bit too on the nose, these are happier days indeed. We've got Skyrim coming, LA Noire, Doom and Wolfenstien on the way. Add in Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, FE Warriors, and the Switch will be in a good spot for sure by the end of the year. Now the only question is, the third party games are coming, but are people going to buy them? I hope so. A lot of Nintendo fans get into a bad habit of only buying Nintendo games for their Nintendo consoles.
@jestermx6
That's a problem for any Console. Except it doesn't seem to be that much of a problem because Consoles keep selling, and so do the games on them.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
.... yeh. Breath of the Wild, Arms and Ultra Street Fighter II were just appalling werent they?
@MoonKnight7 I’m all in for Doom and LA Noire next month. I’m endlessly impressed with Doom running on the Switch and can’t wait.
But it’s been out on everything else already!!! That was also the case when they ported the original to SNES and that was damn awesome to play as well.
Redux of existing games are lazy... ports of a game to a format that has been literally years since they last saw the light of day is actually a huge step. Especially in terms of games like Doom and anything from developers like Rockstar
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"I'd say so far the only real must have original games are Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Sonic Mania. The true real first mega blockbuster to come out is Super Mario Odyssey, 8 months after launch. For me, there aren't too many great games on Switch."
I'd start writing new material, cause pretty soon that's not going to be relevant.
@DESS-M-8
You know, I never, ever would have guessed Doom was coming on the Switch. You basically have it running on a handheld! Impressive indeed.
@electrolite77 other consoles either have more/better exclusives or have a wide enough library that the Indies don't make or break the console. The switch has a lot on the horizon and I already am purchasing SMO, Skyrim, Gear.Club, and will likely pick up Doom. But aside from SMO which is exclusive and Gear.Club which currently exists as a cash grab microtransaction nightmare on mobile, the only reason to pick up the other games is to be able to play them on the go. The entire appeal of the Switch is rooted in its ability to be a home and mobile console all at the same time. That + Zelda was enough to draw a large crowd so far, but the system being crippled by a nonexistent virtual console, crappy online multiplayer environment, lack of a browser or usable apps like netflix and youtube, a large gap between top tier releases and a reliance on the whole "take it with you" for everything else means the Switch will see a sharp decline in sales with spikes during the good game releases. My switch has sat on my night stand for months because after finishing Zelda, nothing has come along that is good enough to make it my "go-to" system for gaming. Meanwhile my PC, and to a lesser extent, my xbox and PS, see consistent usage due to a constant flow of quality releases or at the very least, free old games being offered via PS Plus and Games with Gold.
Having said all that, I love the Switch. I'll be playing SMO in 10 days and Skyrim (for the 500th time) a month later. But unless the pace picks up for high quality AAA releases, the Switch will suffer the same fate as my beloved PS Vita. A new port will be released of a game I love playing on another system. I'll feel nostalgic so I'll pick it up and buy the game. Then I'll play for a bit, get bored, and forget about it. Then find it in my drawer once in a while, wipe away all the dust, play for an hour, then forget about it for another month.
There are sooooo many games getting released on Switch in a short span which is great when coming from Wii U where it was literally two games in the the span of four to six months that were worth playing after Fire Emblem Warriors this week next week is Mario Oddessy not to mention a couple great games getting released on eshop, Skyrim, Doom, and LA Noire are all getting released within the same week and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 drops Dec. 1st WOW JUST WOW.
With the Switch only being out for 7 months, it’s already far exceeding Wii U support. That said, When we see the level of support the other 2 consoles are receiving, then I think we can all happily cry in our beers!! Until then...
@DESS-M-8 Wii U port, not interested and overpriced XB360 Live port.
What you mean to say is crap online with no voice chat!
Actually I’ve found only about 5 games that are good so far. Maybe 7 at most. 🤷🏼♀️
@yeayeanaynay
I'm probably in the minority, but I would prefer Fallout 4. Also, I would sell my soul for a Dark Souls trilogy release (shame that Demon's Souls and Bloodborne are owned by Sony).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No love for ARMS or Splatoon 2, huh? Not to mention Golf Story...
I'm already starting to build a significant backlog. There have been more compelling games for Switch in its first nine months than in the Wii U's first three years.
@Reignmaker No. Golf Story looks like a nice charming retro looking game but it's not what I'd spend €330 on a console for. The Switch costs €400 because the Switch Pro Controller is an essential purchase for me because the Joy-Con's are awful.
Been mainly on a retro binge recently and trying to get back on Bravely Second (rewatching all the cutscenes to pick up the story is a lengthy endeavour). So haven't had much time for my Switch.
The Switch sure started off strong with Zelda, MK8D and some of the Neo Geo games for me. Once Xenoblade, FE:Warriors, Odyssey and DOOM make an appearance over the next 3 months I may be sorted for quite some time.
Whilst ARMS & Splatoon 2 weren't really for me, I can see that they have found decent fanbases. Been quite a while since I've seen such a steady stream of quality on a console so early in its life.
I think the Switch has had the best first-year out of any console since the Dreamcast.
It damn sure is vastly better then the Wii U, 3DS, and even other non-Nintendo consoles like the PS2.
And here's the scary thought. We still have not gotten Pokemon, Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 4, Animal Crossing, a traditional Fire Emblem, or a brand-new Mario Kart.
If the Switch is selling on the strength of the games that have come out this year, how much more insane will it be when those games arrive?
One thing is certain, it been a long time, namely not since the SNES where the greatest problem with a Nintendo's home console's library was getting too many games as opposed to not getting enough games and enduring months of droughts.
Maybe I'm just too picky, but for me there are only a handful of worthwhile games. So no problem here...
@jestermx6
"other consoles either have more/better exclusives or have a wide enough library that the Indies don't make or break the console"
Not after 7 months they didn't.
"the only reason to pick up the other games is to be able to play them on the go".
That's a pretty big plus to a lot of people though. Feeds into your original point about games being on Steam, they don't have the portability factor.
"nothing has come along that is good enough to make it my "go-to" system for gaming"
That and the rest of the post is anecdotal experience. Mine is getting used easily as much as my other systems, probably more in reality. Extrapolating our own personal experiences doesn't give a big insight into whether it will succeed or not. Also by 'go to system' do you mean at that particular point in time or overall? And does that matter? I've multiple systems like you, and I just juggle them as games come out. TBH given the huge collections I have on XB1 and PS4 Pro the Switch getting any time at all, let alone the most, is an amazing thing to me.
Make a List of what shouldn't be included as a 'game' on the shop:
I'll start with:
1. Tower of Babel.
@jestermx6 "The entire appeal of the Switch is rooted in its ability to be a home and mobile console all at the same time."
Well, yeah, and the entire appeal of a car is that it can help you get to places faster.
The Switch is great. I've established a moratorium on buying new games until Odyssey, as Stardew Valley is taking all of my free time, and I still gotta finish Golf Story and start Pan Pan. I even decided to postpone getting South Park for the PS4, as I know I won't find it in me to actually play it anytime soon.
A nice problem to have indeed.
I have only 4 games up to this point, but one of those is BotW and it has consumed my life since I started playing. I’m 75 hours in and I still have a Divine Beast to go.
Plus, add being and a budget and I’ve skipped many games I’m interested in like Mario+Rabbids, so I kind of get the point. I won’t complain, though - I just want time to play some more!
Mario cannot come fast enough
its not anecdotal when everyone else is experiencing the same shortfall. the mobility factor isn't enough when a large portion of the indie games are available on android/ios and the rest of them play perfectly fine on a $200 laptop that can also do many other things.
I've got Stardew Valley to get through, 9 eShop games on my Switch wishlist and Odyssey, L.A Noire and Rocket League right around the corner.
A good problem to have indeed.
@Jokerwolf Poor Princess Peach if that's the case!
I cant wait til March for sligeach_Eire to moan about the Smash Bros Deluxe release.... wiiU/3ds port blah blah blah....
In 2 weeks time I will own 3 retail switch games. But I am very happy with my launch day purchase. ZELDA/KART/ODYSSEY.
@jestermx6 Who's 'everyone else'? The system is selling like hotcakes and is getting tons of good press. The way you tell it, it seems like it's aimlessly flailing and hasn't found an audience.
@yeayeanaynay #47 is a really stupid post. As in, up there with the dumbest of all time type stupid. I'm pretty certain everybody, including @SLIGEACH_EIRE, understands the world doesn't revolve around them. What in the world does that have to do with an individual's decision to buy something?
But do you know what does revolve around each individual in the world of video games? Their personal preferences and purchasing decisions. While I disagree strongly with him (I loved my Wii U, still have plenty to play on Switch) at least he very clearly stated there was nothing brilliant to him, and explained clearly why he chooses not to buy a Switch yet.
I really love Nintendo is embracing the Indies, these past months I’ve played some quality games that feel at home on the switch. Out of my 24 games, 5 are first party.
@ricklongo Don't you mean Luigi? There is evidence proving Luigi and Peach end up together and Rosalina is their grand daughter. Mario has Pauline and Daisy.
Lol, I couldn't disagree more. If anything, it has too little great games.
@ricklongo Do you frequent other gaming sites? it gets barely any press at all.
@yeayeanaynay I feel no obligation to defend anyone. In fact, I don't really care what his position on the topic is, despite already stating I strongly disagree with him. So I'm clearly not trying to "defend" his point of view.
But when you make such an absurd statement that has absolutely no relevance to the conversation in an attempt to discredit his reasoning, I absolutely feel obligated to point out such stupidity. Considering your response was "go suck an egg yoshi", it seems fairly obvious that you have no defense for such a ridiculous post either.
@jestermx6 You mean the Switch? Well, it gets loads of press (and good press at that) in every internet medium I frequent, including IGN, Eurogamer, US Gamer, Neogaf and Kotaku, and also on podcasts I listen to, including Easy Allies and Kinda Funny.
Watching the video it seems like less of there being too many games and more of the eshop being rather pants. Not enough categories to sort games. (Also personal gripe, it is unbelievable that there's no cart on the eshop. That's a rather feature and it's sad that it's not there)
The Switch library is decent right now. I just have BotW and Splatoon 2. Getting Odyssey on day one. A lot of smaller, independent games. Nothing wrong with that. I have and Xbox, so I have a ton to play. The Switch releasing mid-gen and being easy to develop for is paying off big.
I also have my Wii U still hooked up for VC and the numerous games not on Switch like Pikmin 3.
Great time to be a gamer!
@Ryu_Niiyama
"Anybody know how to add more hours to the day? I can't finish my games in a timely fashion."
Easy. Play your Nintendo Switch on Planet Venus because one day on Venus = 243 Earth days.
But, Oops.... Sorry. You can die by squished , decomposed and burnt into ash by entering planet Venus with a lot of CO2 gas, Extreme pressure, H2SO4 rain and 480°C++ temperature.
Just kidding.
Better you manage your time when you want to play Nintendo Switch.
I think it is ok. Far from great.
You would need to be ok with being flooded by retro games and The 3rd party support is still awful for anyone who always had one of the 2 big consoles. You would also need to believe every nintendo game is worth playing regardless of type (unrealistic for most people)
Nintendo pretty much carried the Switch this year. Lets hope we see more variety next year and less reliance on old rehashed ports from 3rd party.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE well I know where I was in regard to the Wii U. The Wii & Wii U were both garbage machines in my opinion. No offence to anyone that had one but I'm now getting a much better experience with the Switch because I gave the Wii U a miss so you know what? I'm not complaining!
The eShop for sure needs a rework, the current version is just far too simplistic. As for too many games, I'd rather have too many games to choose from than not enough. There's something for everyone and I always feel like I have something to do.
I agree fully, but I'm not complaining. And if you're one of those like me who owns an Xbone and a PS4 as well...and a 3DS and all the retro consoles too, I think my backlog of games is now ample enough to get me through the next decade!
It's kinda true.
I buy a ton of games on all systems and I simply can't keep up with the Switch releases at this point.
I already have a "to buy" list of 12 games on Switch and that's just retail releases. And the next couple of weeks are simply nuts!
I'm not worried at all though. There is bound to be a slower period here or there that will allow me to catch up a bit... probably.
The switch has one great game until next Friday. Then it will have 2.
@JSG87
"The Wii & Wii U were both garbage machines in my opinion. No offence to anyone that had one but I'm now getting a much better experience with the Switch because I gave the Wii U a miss so you know what? I'm not complaining!"
Hey !
I have both Wii & Wii U to play my Gamecube, Wii & Wii U games.
The Switch has made quite library for its self, so far this year. But with all this Wii U talk I kind of wish we'll be able to see more re-releases of a few 1st party Wii U games. I understand that there are people who are against that, but honestly I feel that there is a good portion of Wii U games that deserve a second chance on a more undoubtedly financially favorable system.
The gamer's dilemma...
Young gamers (kids/teens) - Have lots of TIME to play games, but no money to buy the games/systems they want because they are kids and have to have Mom/Dad permission or have them buy games for them.
Mature gamers (adults) - Have MONEY to buy games and INDEPENDENCE to buy whatever they want (within a budget) without having to ask permission from Mom/Dad.... but we have no time to play games with work.
I think there's a problem if the quantity makes it impossible for new releases to be profitable.
However while the user base continues to grow at a fast rate and the existing user base remains very invested & buying new titles then I think we'll see a lot more success stories.
@jestermx6
"its not anecdotal when everyone else is experiencing the same shortfall"
Everyone else isn't experiencing the same shortfall. So it is anecdotal.
"the mobility factor isn't enough"
....to you. You're extrapolating again.
"a large portion of the indie games are available on android/ios and the rest of them play perfectly fine on a $200 laptop that can also do many other things"
But I can't go from Steamworld Dig 2 or Thumper to Mario V Rabbids or Splatoon 2 on any of them devices can I? So as part of the library those indie games are a huge plus. I could play them on the PS4 but for games that aren't technically demanding I may as well have the flexibility.
" Do you frequent other gaming sites? it gets barely any press at all."
Eh? It certainly gets plenty of coverage on Eurogamer, Games Central, US Gamer and Pocket Gamer plus a disproportionate amount of discussion on Neogaf.
Don't get me wrong I love all the indie games but we need more higher quality third party on board
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I agree that there aren't a lot of must have original games on the switch but I think that Splatoon 2 definitely counts as one.
@Anti-Matter I'm sorry lol. I had a Wii but I rarely played it and moved to pc gaming. Never really been a Sony or Microsoft fan in terms of game consoles but the switch is cool and the games are great!
No it doesn't.
Let's make it more!
Persona 5, anyone?
I just don’t have enough time for all the games I would like to play unlike when I was younger so I’m very picky these days. First party Nintendo gets the majority of my cash as I buy most of them day 1, but third party games tend to get pushed off until they drop in price or I can get them used at a deep discount unless they are something very special. I’ve also picked up a few indies but I’m very selective on that front as well and tend to wait for sales.
Either way, more games is better than very few games. I like having a large selection to choose from.
@Obitokamui64 If I hadn't played the original on Wii U so much, I'd agree. The first game was brilliant but I tired of it after a couple of hundred hours(like that's nothing, it's not). I have though, it doesn't have the same impact for me. I stopped playing the Wii U version long ago, maybe that was helped by Super Mario Maker becoming the ultimate time sink.
Bottom-line: haters were laughing at Nintendo's "last-ditch effort" to re-enter the competition and were already declaring Nintendo to be dead.
Nintendo simply replied by asking the competition and naysayers alike to hold their beer.
And I'm here drowning in the naysayers' tears. Sorry guys, Nintendo is here to stay.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE i dont post much on here, but read on a daily bases and have to admit you have a valid point (your original post). I love my nintendo and have done since my nes back in the 80's. Love my switch. Love the portability and am one of a few (i think) where its my only console (new gen). I like the ports as have no other means to play them, unless doom gets ported to the megadrive which i think is unlikely. However, if i were fortunate and owned other consoles, how many switch games (exclusives) would you class as timeless classics? I think the variety of releaeses so far is fantastic for those less fortunate to own multiple platforms like myself, however understand the frustrations for those that do.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Yeah, I got ya. I guess I'm just a multiplayer game junkie.
Cannot wait for the onslaught of amazing games coming up. Between now and the end of the year there's like six or seven must buys for me. Nintendo has officially declared war on my bank account...and I don't back down from a fight.
Steady releases of quality software is definitely a good thing. Even if something isn't a "must have" game, just knowing that it's there and ready to play when the time is right is so much better than the alternative of waiting months just to have anything new that you would be interested in to play.
I have only Zelda for the Switch, and FE Warriors pre ordered. Mostly because I did already own MK8 and Pokkén on WiiU.
But hell yeah the library is fast expanding! FEW, Mario, LA Noire and Xenoblade will close the year with a golden key!
next week my wallet will suffer fire emblem warriors,nights of azure 2,mario odyssey,and nba2k18 physical version.
To be fair to us readers, we do read your scores and purchase based on good reviews.
Hello, I'm normally a Nintendotodayer but I'm making the... Switch.... to NintendoLife, I'm here reading articles and comments more anyway. So, Hello Lovely People lol.
I've thought about this problem from day one of owning a Switch, and I think that was day 35 of it's release.
It's almost as if Nintendo wasn't ready for it's system to hit the ground running. As a early WiiU owner I can understand why. Something does need to be done, I am Setsuna is probably buried under a dog pile of games at this point. I have it on PC, but if I had known that it was on sale for Switch, I would have purchased it as it's easier to play Switch. That was before they added the On Sale section of the eshop. Please, make it easy to buy games. Some of the people with a Switch haven't been haunting the eshop since the beginning.
Thanks for having me... Of course I know all I did was verify my email, but still, Thanks
The WiiU eShop is much better. Out that on the Switch and many problems will be solved.
How is that a problem? The Wii U had a horrible time trying to get games in the system it's whole life that the Switch's luck of having a ton so early in means the Switch is actually improving over its predecessor. I'd say it was a win for the Switch.
@XenoShaun
Your overpriced ports argument is a lie. Many of them are cheaper on the eShop than PSN. Stardew Valley is a good example of this. There are more too cheaper on the eShop.
This is so poor of you, NintendoLife. The fact the Switch is actually improving over its predecessor, the Wii U means it's actually doing its job and Nintendo learnt from what the Wii U failed at: getting games at a healthy pace.
So basically there's no console to turn to if you want a limited number of options anymore. The Wii U played that role nicely.
@AlwaysGreener Yeah.. I expect we'll see Smash Bros and maybe Bayonetta. Not sure what else would come, though... Mario Maker will likely get a sequel so it doesn't make any since to port that.
@roadrunner343 If I personally don't feel excited for somethings everyone else is excited about, at least I don't try to be a downer to other people who are excited.
People who think that there aren't enough great games on this system really need to expand their horizons, like come on now.
Really hoping for two things with the Switch first which should be possible port over Bayonetta 2 at least since i can get 1 on the PC if i wanted. Second which is a huge wish please port Metroid Prime Trilogy to the Switch somehow. The second one is a huge reason why i might go back and repurchase a Wii U that and Zelda Wind Waker because i tried the Gamecube version and i sort of regret selling the Wii U. I'm sure most of the games from the Wii U will get ported at some point.
"too many great games " is that sarcasm?
Not really true, just more games than Nintendo fanboys are used to. Also, every great indie is trying to come out on Switch in the first year so it will slow down after most of them have.
Between Switch, 3DS and SNES Mini I’ve got more than enough games to play already.
At some point next year I’ll buy Odyssey, Skyrim, XC2 etc, no doubt.
Animal Crossing Switch would be a day one for me though.
The more games the better. The more games and support the Switch gets, the more support it will get from more companies and more games. I love all the options.
@Al_Godoy 84 IS a lot...but aren’t there even more? The Switch eShop (US) has 170+ titles listed.
I know 1 of those is just the free Vs mode download for Namco Museum, and there’s probably a couple other non-games, but at least 160 of them should be games.
It’s crazy.
and that's just the neo geo fighting games!
@foobarbaz
Change your attitudes toward Nintendo Switch.
Don't behave like "I'm Too Cool to play Non AAA games."
Even some Indie games or Small 3rd party games are Great for Complimentary.
They are like Side Dishes while AAA games like Main Course.
Try to expand your Nintendo Switch library game.
I'm sure you will get another great games.
BTW, Right now on my list, I got 14 Switch games in Physical + 4 Switch E-Shop games, mixture of AAA games, Ports (from Wii U / PS4) and Indie / small 3rd party games.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Considering you don't even have a. Switch how would you even know if the games are good or not? I really don't know why you post here. My guess is its all for attention.
I got a message to the article: The Switch has a bigger problem, and it's that it has no Virtual Console after even more than 6 months from the release.
I don't get the complaints about ports. They make sense as they're quicker and easier to develop than new games. They make sense as not every game can be an exclusive. They make sense as nobody has every other system and has played every game on every other system.
In my 30 years gaming, ports have always been a thing. If you're lucky enough that you've played every port that makes it to the Switch maybe it's a legit complaint but in that case, you'll just have to enjoy the exclusives. But for most people. lots of ports are actually new games.
PS4 users got 1629 games to chose from. They also got cheaper games but more junk among them. Switch don't even got a RPG out yet.
@foobarbaz
"Indie games? Those rarely hold my interest for more than a few minutes"
Well this made me laugh. Thousands of different games across tons of different genres including some stone-cold classics dismissed as if they're one type/length/quality of game. Brilliant.
@Chibi Did you even read what I wrote? I own BOTW, MK8, Tumblestone, World of Goo, Shovel Knight, Rayman Legends, Little Inferno, Severed, Pokken Tournament, Resident Evil: Revelations, etc, etc, etc on older platforms. I'm not paying for them again.
What started out as manageable (keeping up with the Switch software library) began to feel like trying to cling onto the back bumper of a car that’s speeding away. Eventually you lose your grip and watch the car fade into the distance. But that’s okay! Every new game that comes out for Switch makes me happy, even if long gone are any hopes of my being able to keep even remotely up with the system’s library! It’s a great problem to have!
Enjoyable vid once again, thanks. This site clearly has a symbiotic relationship with N / The Switch. No problem, it's the dynamic nature of content creators, the media and the public.
Right now, NL is a great position , as a trusted (by us) curator of content. 84 games ! Wow. Jelly. Not jelly. You have to play all that and report back. Fun but also a huge amount of work! Respect.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE slig, I love you man but the joy cons are not "awful". Granted they are not top tier input devices and yes, you definitely want to get a PC, but they are FINE. I've used them for a good portion of zelda without comapaint and I have big ape hands. Ditto MK 8. Lovely attached and playing Golf Story. Yes, LOVELY.
Playing one in landscape mode is hell tough
@Fake-E-Lee sounds to me like you're having an absolute blast, and for me that's EXACTLY what gaming should be about
@dimi PS4 launched 4 years ago. At the current rate, in 4 years time the Switch will have 1880 games (4x 470 games now available). I would bet hard cash it will be more than that.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_Switch_games
@JSG87 doom & gloom....yes I suppose Sligeach_Eire is but i rather like people who make criticisms and point out flaws, it's better than a group of nodding dogs and yes men/women. Yes there are lots of games in the library but not so many 'great' games out for the switch at present.
On Wii U you eat whatever they feed you. On Switch, it's a banquet buffet, you become picky about what you eat. 🍱🍤🍖🍗🍕
In the future, Switch gamers are all spoiled brats who only wants the best. It's bad news for crappy developer who makes crappy games for a living.
@Nincompoop
Hey !
Not all Switch pickier are brats.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Hey Slig, not sure if you own a Switch, but for me something I've grown to appreciate is the Joycons, especially playing with them separated, one in each hand. You can play SO comfortably that way, standing, sitting or lying on your bed. Ergonomically, it's wonderful, since you don't have to play with your hands together.
As for Alex's video, the volume of quality games is overwhelming. While I have bought only about seven game cards (BoTW, Mario and Rabbids, Tetris/Puyo Puyo, Sine More, Splatoon 2, and Tiny Barbarian), I have 40+ downloaded games, that include Ironcast, Slime-San, Butcher, NeuroVoider, Blaster Master, Thumper, Wulverblade, Earth Atlantis, Pankapu, Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time, Tumblestone, Golf Story, Steamworld Dig 2, Robonauts, Puzzle Adventure Blockle, Mighty Gunvolt Burst, Gonner, Wonder Boy, Kamiko, Fast RMX, Snakepass, I am Setsuna, and Graceful Explosion Machine.
On top of this, I love arcade games, so I have Mario Bros, Gunbarich, Strikers 1945, Namco Museum (which is actually about 10 games) and about 20 NeoGeo games (that is, most of the ones that are NOT 1 v. 1 fighting games).
... and I haven't beat any of them, other than some of the arcade games, which don't count when you keep jamming "quarters" into them.
Although I have put in over 150 hours into BotW, probably the best game I've ever played.
And I love one of the posts above. The conundrum: Kids don't have enough money, adults don't have enough time.
Do I regret any of the above purchases? Maybe Gonner.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you don't own one and havent played half the games.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE so because you already own them they aren't great games 🤔 Millions of people don't own them- when will you understand that.
@foobarbaz have you even looked st the eshop🤔
I've been playing golf story for the past two weeks- it's a must have and there are easily 40 others.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE your point about where we're Wii u buyers is valid sir- I'll give you that. 👊
@dimi
"PS4 has 1629 games"
I actually think something like 'having too many games' could only be a discussion point in Nintendo world. Other systems just aim for as many games and as much variety as possible and let the punters decide.
Good to hear but I want more games like Assassins Creed etc.
I play 3ds/vita/ps4 also, so I really can not keep up with the influx. Although I mostly play Nintendo, I always was able to balance how many games I purchase and what games to get. This is all out the window. I am so tempted to get FE Warriors, But I know Mario is coming out a week later. the Skyrim, Doom, X2, and all the indie games in between in the next few months. I still have Metroid and EOV for 3DS to play. Not to mention Ys8 for Vita. Maybe I'm a casual now.
@yeayeanaynay "yawn.. negativity attracts negativity AND HES NEGATIVE"
By that logic, I guess it's ok for you to bully a kid that lost his mother and thinks everything sucks or anyone that feels depression. He may be negative, but you are agressive and intolerant if you think you have to attack different opinions and that there's justification behind it.
@jimmyjames
" I like the ports as have no other means to play them, unless doom gets ported to the megadrive which i think is unlikely. However, if i were fortunate and owned other consoles, how many switch games (exclusives) would you class as timeless classics"
This is the other thing regarding ports. If you don't have a machine to play these games on, ports are a great thing. The games themselves get potential new buyers and Nintendo-only owners get more games to play. Win win.
The tribalism is real on this article. I am surprised about the amount of games Switch has gathered over a relatively short amount of time, but aside from a few excellent examples, the majority are last gen ports or indies. Nothing wrong with either, but they shouldn't be the crown jewels of a new (ish) system.
Definitely too many games on both 3DS and Switch for me to have time to play.
On 3DS, I've had Hey! Pikmin, Brain Training, Metroid, Miitopia, Fire Emblem Echoes, Dragon Quest VIII, Ever Oasis and Mario & Luigi.
On Switch, I've yet to have the time to complete the Zelda DLC. Fire Emblem Warriors is out this week which I won't have time to play but I have to buy it being a Fire Emblem fan. I haven't bought Splatoon 2, Arms, Street Fighter II, Thimbleweed Park, Stardew Valley, Golf Story, Minecraft, Shovel Knight, Axiom Verge and Picross S because of lack of time due to other games.
Super Mario Odyssey is out next week and all my time for any other games will be taken away because of this game.
I'm not unhappy about this situation at all though.
I am definitly feeling this problem. I have 22 games (2/3 of it I spent 20h or more with obviously more than 120 on BotW) and I got to a point when I am not buying day one games because I don't have time to play them (again obviously I will buy Mario odyssey on day one and also doom and LA noire to support the system). But the truth is I have been away from the console market for 2 decades so for me everything is quite new on the system
People always expect that everyone else is Just. Like. Me.
The reality is that everyone posting (or even reading) this site or any other videogaming website is a outlier in the grand scheme of things. The overwhelming majority of people who own a games console won't clock up 150 hours of play in a year - there are people on this site who clock that in a month. There may even be some here who clock that in a week.
Look at SLIGEACH_EIRE (and I won't tag him because I know he must see so many notifications on this site) - he played a couple of hundred hours of Splatoon. His opinion of Splatoon 2 is therefore very different someone who had a more 'normal' experience of the original Splatoon and might have only played 30 hours.
The thing is if you're only playing 20-30 hours of games every month (which already makes you an outlier) then you don't have the time to play everything that appeals to you.
For these people - the overwhelming majority - it doesn't matter at all if a game is a port or an exclusive, a few days old or a couple of decades, a few pounds more cheaper on another platform or a few pounds more expensive.
It only matters if it's good (and locatable/promoted/visible) because these people - and again that's almost everyone - have barely even scratched the surface of what's available.
no...
"Thimbleweed Park" is the best adventure game in a long time and the Switch port is fantastic. Every fan of the 80s, pixel art and fans of the video game making business or games like Maniac Mansion or Monkey Island series should get thier hands on it! It's incredibly well written!
Playing "Mario Rappids" now and looking forward to "Skyrim", "L.A.Story" and "This is the Police" soon! I even have a PC at home... but playing great titles while commuting works better for me.
I love that multiple good games are releasing close together. We’re used to having to hold on to a good game for months at a time, in hopes that the next big announced game will suffice. But now (unless your rich of course) you’ll have to choose, which is great. It’s great to know that once I finish a great game there will be another waiting for me on the shelf. I can start building a catalogue.
Putting "Too Many Great Games" in your headline doesn't make it true. There many games, yes. But very few are actually great. Easily the last foray into Nintendo for me.
Counterpoint: There aren't enough Good Games on the Switch yet.
I have 4 games and a demo.
@WaveBoy You say that there is no VC on the switch but do you think that the switch should have it in its first year? If VC means to play Wii and Wii U games on it then ok but otherwise VC is not needed right now if you want to play SNES, GBA games.
Disgaea 5, VOEZ, Deemo, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Super Bomberman R.
Then, for future release, Gal*Gun 2, SMT HD Project and the 2018 Fire Emblem game (so far).
Breddy gud to be honest.
@Shellcore
It's been a long time since the first few months of any system wasn't dominated by ports. You're going back to PS1/Saturn/N64. That's not tribalism, it's realism.
The Situation is way better than on the wii u back in the day. Cant say if it has too many great games. I am mostly interested in first party games and appreciate the flow in which they have been coming out.
@electrolite77 Sigh. Not you again. Read the title of the article, re-read my comment. If you don't agree, move along.
"Problem"
a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome.
Too many games isn't this..
There are games to buy at this point, yes... But not much in the way of exclusives yet (which is okay for first year not being done, and SMO/XB2 will fix that), and the ecosystem of the console itself is very incomplete. I'm not going to bother with NS until the inevitable SKU upgrade in 2-3 year's time. I just don't think the ecosystem was planned and rolled out very well at all compared to the Wii/Wii U, and the multiplayer setup has various issues that would be inexcusable on any other platform. Other people have also mentioned how Nintendo doesn't know how to organize their eShop store setup compared to others, and of course Nintendo also has no idea how to run sales deals. Nintendo did okay with the Wii Shop Channel due to it's simplicity, but as soon as they had to develop a modern searchable library, they fell way behind everyone else.
All in all, I'd rather just stick to PC and leave behind new consoles until the NS library builds up. No interest in PS4/XBO, and most 3rd party titles I would want so far can be had on PC. Plus, I'm still getting 3DS games...
@Shellcore
(Rolls eyes) Just a discussion point chief. I'll try and remember to tread more carefully in future. I dread to think what effect me actually disagreeing you with you in any meaningful way would have.
@BranJ0 Totally with you on that one, the eShop needs to be more structured and organised otherwise they'll miss a lot of sales just because some great games simply get lost in the crowd.
I guess I’m in the minority here. After finishing Zelda BOTW, hardly touched the Switch in months. Mario Kart 8 played for a few hours and stopped. Splatoon 2 played an hour and stopped, really couldn’t get into the game. Played 2 hours of Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle and stopped due to being frustrated by its difficulty. Once Mario Odyssey comes out however I will play it a lot more. The only game I played that I thought was really good on the Switch is Zelda. Everything else I played on it is “meh”.
@Caryslan "a brand new Mario Kart"
Why does everybody seem to think that the Switch will have a guaranteed Mario Kart. What if Nintendo's feeling lazy to the point that they just stick with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 'til the next console?
What if that was why they ported the game in the first place.
Even with money being in short supply...I've gotten 19 games for my Switch (and that's not counting my PS4 and 3). Only 3 of those are physical. And there are so many more that I WANT to get (I will be downloading Skyrim on release...don't want that out of my system!) including tons of indies and physicals I just can't afford right now. I've said it before and will say it again: best system launch year for software I've ever seen. And its not even over till March!
You're absolutely right, Alex. The eShop could do soooo much more. Why not add a Demo section, have suggestions like Steam does, some weekly selection, etc.
Come on Nintendo, you're sitting on a chest of gold and letting people look cluelessly for the key!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Good for you! Of course I read your comment and you know dam well what I'm talking about! There are plenty of good Switch games that arent ports. Something you would know nothing about, having not played them. You are not the only 1 to have owned a Wii u here. About time you grew up and moved on!
@electrolite77 Going back to DC/PS2/GCN/XB*
7th console gen is where it all started going downhill for console launch exclusives. 8th console gen was even worse. (I would say NS is early 9th console gen...)
@yeayeanaynay What are you even talking about? I never mentioned anything about anyone's mother, in fact, the only comment that mentions something close to it that I'm aware of it's yours:
"are you his mum? Im sure and we all aware that sligeach can defend himself.."
Geeez dude, learn to have a proper discussion, I don't know if you are combining what you are discussing with others or how is that even relevant to our discussion.
@Don your comment says more about you than Nintendo and her games.
I have too many games on my Wii U. Many still to play for the 1st time
@PlywoodStick
DC was pretty good yeah. PS2 launch was awful. Xbox and GC though, they had their own little clutch of exclusives but they shared so many PS2 ports in that first few months-SSX Tricky, Burnout, Tony Hawk 3, Dave Mirra etc.etc. I think of them launches in late 2001 as the start of systems early periods being dominated by ports.
@Pupito The day Super Mario Odyssey releases is the true launch date of the Switch.
I just recently got my Switch (for Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2) because there was very little in the first 6 months. Either I owned them for another system or had no interest in them. Even now despite the games beginning to flow there's still lots that I already have (example just got Oxenfree for 'free' on Xbox just before it releases on Switch).
Right now the only must have for me was Mario + Rabbids, but once Mario and Xenoblade hit I'll have plenty to play.
@yeayeanaynay What the... dude that's not talking about someone's mother... the only crap around here is the one coming from your comments. How nice, asking to not bring mothers into the argument when you were the first one to bring it and THE OLY ONE to do it in an offensive way (hypocrisy at it's best), while mine was an example that in no way ws offensive to someone's mother. Where does he say he wanted attention? You are quite a recent member, and you are already being obnoxious and insulting, congratulations.
"man your a drop kick looking for what?"
What? Dude english isn't even my anguage, yet somehow I manage to express myself better than you.
@yeayeanaynay Whatever excuse works for you, buddy
@yeayeanaynay Sure.
@SolarJetman split joycons have become my favorite controller method, totally unexpectedly. I need to find a way to chop my ps4 controller in half now as that is how I want to play my AAA multi-plats
@SLIGEACH_EIRE not entirely sure what you are talking about
@MoonKnight7 was got smacked when this announcement dropped, to which I instantly thought ...... yes please.
Now I have it... it is more awesome than I thought it would be and I my most played switch game to date
