After a disjointed development cycle, Rodea: The Sky Soldier has now been officially confirmed for a release in the West.
NIS America will handle the digital and physical publishing rights of the game on both the Wii U and 3DS, with the title expected to arrive this fall. A copy of the original Wii game is set to be bundled with the Wii U release, as is the case in Japan.
With Rodea: The Sky Soldier scheduled to arrive in the latter half of this year, take a look at the official press release along with the developer interview and trailer below.
About the game:
1,000 years ago, Emperor Geardo of the Naga Empire sent an army of machine soldiers to invade the sky kingdom of Garuda. Thanks to the efforts of Princess Cecilia and Rodea, a machine soldier who promised to protect Garuda, Emperor Geardo's assault was thwarted.
In present day, a spirited inventor named Ion discovers an abandoned robot that has fallen into disrepair in the heart of a scorching desert.
Upon completing her repairs, the robot stirs to life and reveals itself to be none other than Rodea. Stunned to find himself in the future, Rodea learns that the Naga Empire is no more and that Garuda has known peace for 1,000 years.
But this peace was not meant to last, for the forces of Naga have returned to wage war against Garuda. Remembering the promise he made 1,000 years ago, Rodea takes to the skies to defend Garuda from the Naga Empire once again.
Key Features:
Touch the Sky – Complete each mission by traversing the aerial kingdom of Garuda while solving puzzles and demolishing enemies! Upgrade your flight capabilities and take full control of the air to discover secrets of the past and hints of the future.
Delightful Tinkering – Explore each level and shatter enemies to collect Gears and Gravitons which Ion can use in her workshop to upgrade Rodea with new abilities and weapons, from upgrading his stats (such as health, attack damange, and speed) to powerful machine guns.
Colossal Battles – Engage in battles on an epic scale as you combat the massive automatons of the Naga army. Dodge and weave in acrobatic combat as you evade the behemoths' attacks and locate their weaknesses.
Endless Hours of Fun – Replay your favorite levels to better your time and uncover numerous hidden objectives and items. Upgrade your gear to set new speed records and increase your score.

This looks like a decent addition to the Wii U 2015 lineup. Hopefully it releases away from the heavy hitters, though. If it comes out near the release of Splatoon or Zelda, it's going to get stomped.
Good news at last!
Sweet! I love Nights and this controls very similar!
I think we can all agree that this will be the best wii game of 2015.
Ok, but I'm not really interested in this game... Hey, talking about this, what about fatal frame??
Glad to see this stateside. Hopefully NIS continues its trend of releasing Limited Edition versions by having on for this game as well!
I am excited for this game, and it's nice to hear both a confirmation of it releasing worldwide, as well as rough time it will be releasing. I'm quite surprised though, even with it getting a worldwide release, I didn't expect it to arrive this year.
In any case, this game looks awesome, and I'll definitely be purchasing it upon it's release. I look forward to it.
"It’s finished as Wii title and as of now we have no plans to bring it to Wii U," Naka answered. "Rodea was made specifically for the Wii so players could enjoy it by flicking the remote. If we tried to incorporate those controls into the large Wii U controller it wouldn’t be the same. I would really like for people to play and enjoy it on the Wii as I had originally intended." (Siliconera, 2011)
So, how it ended? No gyro or wiimote on the WiiU version?
Looks like a HD Dramcast game. Only good can come from that
Good news! But will digital buyers get the Wii version in the eShop too?
@outburst They probably will
Really happy with this announcement. And the fact the announced it for both NA and EU simultaneously, and didn't leave out the Wii U version. I somewhat expected a 3DS only release. But heck they're even tossing in the Wii version!
I would like to play this with motion controls, wonder if I'll have to play the Wii version for that? Maybe they included motion for Wii U version too?
YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!
Freakishly AWESOME!
Day one perch.
I've been waiting for this so many years.
Arrrgh, another long wait... but quite looking forward to it.
I'm all over this one, looks totally my bag (man)
I hope it is fun because it looks promising.
@rjejr
Another game beating TLG. Now we only need FFXV, Shenmue 3 and Half Life 3 to come before it.
The Wii version is still unconfirmed according to NIS America
Nice
So I should be excited to buy a WII game on the Wii U at full price? Or is this an E-shop budget title? There seems to be a lot of frame issues,pop through and it generally looks nasty.
Definitely getting this game.
This game actually doesn't look too bad! I like what I'm seeing.
Looks pretty cool so far. Will keep my eye on it.
Very glad to see a western release confirmed.
Awesome news. I think it's fair to say that this year is shaping up to be the most robust for the Wii U retail library so far.
I hope an Australian release isn't out of the question.
Looks pretty neat
I'm hoping it's a 40 or 50 dollar release. That would make me even more likely to buy it.
Excellent news. I'll be keeping my eyes on this one.
We all knew this was coming, so that's great news, unfortunately I am extremely wary of this game, considering the turbulent development, and the fact that not much in the graphics department was upgraded for the Wii U.
I feel as though the game was almost done, and they figured they should release it and try and make some money back rather than bury it on a shelf.
Don't get me wrong this game looks interesting, and could be fun, but I remain extremely skeptical.
Moving forward, since this game is now official, can we get some official Fatal Frame news please, its been a long time coming, and I wish Nintendo would allow this one over.
Awesome! I'll probably go for the Wii/Wii U combo version.
I will keep a eye on this title for sure!
I'm not sure I'll be that interested in this game, but my second impression is higher than my first, and I'm going to keep an eye on it. Could be a good game to pick up later this year.
@sinalefa - Don't think I'd put this in the same category as those other games, I hardly even know anything about this 1 except for this 1 photo I posted yesterday. @JaxonH may disagree though
Will probably pick this up on Wii U as I continue my eternal wait for a Kid Icarus Uprising port.
@rjejr You and me both (Kid Icarus Uprising port).
This should be good though. It really is filling that NIGHTS and Kid Icarus void
A definite must-buy.
@the_beaver sounds like Nintendo's job
@JaxonH @rjejr No ports please! I'd rather have a new game.
@sillygostly don't European games work on Australian systems
@MADGAZ it is no Digital budget title as it is getting a full release on the Wii U in Japan with the unreleased Wii version also being packed in for free. that does not sound like a budget title.
@andreoni79 it seems like that you are drawing arcs in the newest trailer from November just to get him to go in reverse or go left or go right. think of it like Kirby canvas curse.
So would the Wii U version of this be the best one to get since it'll come with the Wii game as well or is it too early to call that yet?
@rjejr
I wasn't talking quality, just protracted development time.
3DS version for me. Sold.
@SamirMalik
There's a time for new games, and there's a time for ports. This year is all new games for Wii U. There's room for one good port, especially since Kid Icarus never got the dual analog justice it deserved...
@JaxonH We are getting a port this year of a cult classic PS2 game call the legend of kaz. Anyways, Uprising did have something like that where you use the ABXY buttons to control the camera instead.
@SamirMalik
Legend of Kaz? On Wii U, here in NA? Never heard of it. Sure it's not some budget digital release or something?
@JaxonH it is a cult classic from the ps2 era so of course you would not have heard of it. it is an HD remake. Btw, I screwed up the name. the name is actually legend of Kay
@SamirMalik I owned every PS system since PSone. Still never heard of it though. Probably just like the OddWorld remake, little $20 digital release
Oh man, I have the hunch that this game is going to be a massive bomb.
There will by default a very small percentage of Wii U owners interested in this kind of niche third party games by a noname japanese developer.
Then, you have to substract the people from that small group that will dismiss the game because it has Wii upscaled graphics.
Then, you have to substract the people from that smaller group that will dismiss it (or wait for the good old bargain bin) when they read the 7/8 at best reviews scores.
And still NISA will try. Now THAT is trust on the system gentlemen.
@Yomerodes In truth all of their localized games would be considered bombs. However, they don't mind. They contunue to aid these niche groups no matter what and are still able to stay in business.
@JaxonH It's getting a disc release.
@SamirMalik
Oh no kiddin? Well now I'm interested. I'm all about my physical releases. Legend of Kay you say? I'm gonna google it now actually
Yay!... I wanted this game for the 3DS and now finally I can play it
looks fun and exciting to play, i'll take the wii u version first then the 3ds version.
@SamirMalik
Dude, that's total hype! Just read an article about it. It's also Europe only as of right now, and even that is just based off one retailer listing (no official announcement)
AMAZING! Need to preorder this NOW.
@JaxonH - If it makes you feel any better I've never heard of it either - must've been a very small cult - and it looks right up my alley. There's been chatter on the internet the past 2 weeks notably on here:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/02/cult_playstation_2_title_legend_of_kay_is_getting_remastered_on_wii_u
but I thought everyone was talking about Mark of Kri, which you must've played, it was pretty good. I'm going to the grave w/ PS2 being my all time favorite system, even if they invent the holodeck in my lifetime.
@sinalefa - It's hard for me to talk about a protracted development time when I only heard about the game a few days ago
@rjejr
I've been gaming probably as long as you have (since the NES/Gameboy), and as against the grain as this is to say, I typically enjoy each system more than the last. I used to say the GC was my favorite system, but I would without a doubt say the Wii U is now my favorite of all time. I've never had a PS system I thought was my favorite, although I have liked them all- particularly the PSP.
Idk though, every time I think Wii U is my favorite I remember MH4U on 3DS, and Fire Emblem Awakening, and Zelda Link Between Worlds. If there's any doubt, it will be quickly put to rest when Xenoblade X, Splatoon, Star Fox, Zelda U and (hopefully soon?) Fast Racing Neo drops. After all, the Wii U does still have MH3U and should be getting a Fire Emblem of its own. Then again, 3DS already has a 2nd Fire Emblem announced. And Monster Hunter 4. And Monster Hunter 4. And Monster Hunter 4. Did I mention the 3DS has Monster Hunter 4?
Aww the heck with it I like em both the same!
@JaxonH @SamirMalik - I don't have a 3DS so it's new to me. If it makes you feel any better I'd settle for a Wii U sequel. It sold over 1mil copies, it deserves a sequel. And since Kirby's DS game got a Wii U sequel and Luigi's Gamecube game got a 3DS sequel Nintendo doesn't seem opposed to putting sequels on the wrong platform. Which reminds me, I need a Luigi's Mansion 2 port to Wii U as well
Now where's that "Reply to All" button?
@JaxonH Well I'm in the Netherlands so that's why it caught my eye.
@JaxonH We're still waiting for that FE crossover. T_T
@JaxonH - After a years worth of comments I think 3DS is your all time favorite system, especially if you liked the PSP that much. Monster Hunter has a lot to do w/ both.
Looks fun! If I can catch it at retail, I'll give the Wii copy away as a gift.
@rjejr
Indeed. You know me well.
This game is one of the games I was really hoping would come to America.
This and Kaio: King of Pirates.
No word has thus been mentioned for a long time about it though. ):
Good news! Hopefully its worth it.
It looks better than last preview I saw of the gameplay. More fast paced!
Glad to see this is being picked up. I'll be going with the Wii U version, especially if it includes the Wii one as well.
That is good news. For awhile there this game dropped off the radar and I thought it would be Japan only. I'm up for any game from the man behind the masterpiece that is NiGHTS. The only problem is Wii U or 3DS?
@Rosalina
Agreed! Nice game that seems to have an engine of 'Dreamcast' origins.
@Yomerodes No Name ? He was the main person behind Sonic.
SUGOI!!!!
WHOOO! I never thought this game was coming, but it actually happened! So much hype
@unrandomsam
Sorry I was not clear enough, I was referring to Kadokawa when I was talking about the developer. While they had a fairly strong resume to them too much of their products have been Japan exclusives, in the western world their name is basically meaningless for the people that think the only Japanese third parties with anything worth of attention are the big names like Capcom, Sega, Square Enix, Konami etc.
@DinoFett Not an engine. A person from the Dreamcast era Sonic leading this game. The main person of that era in fact.
@Yomerodes Well, Kadokawa is a publisher. Not a developer. Plus, from what I notice, they are more focused on film than games
Genuinely excited by this.
I see Amazon.De have a release date for September this year for the 3ds. I'm interested, might pick it up.
