Re: Soapbox: Why Websites Don’t Need to Give a Game a Review Score (and Probably Shouldn’t)

shinesprite

I don't know how the rest of the consumers make their purchasing decisions, but I tend to throw "popular" opinion out the window and simply ask myself if a game is something which I would enjoy.

So to boil it down, my priorities are as follows:
1. Do I have a genuine interest in the gameplay/mechanics?
2. What do the Images/Videos tell me about the in-the-moment experience?
3. What does the review, summary, and score tell be about the longer-term experience?

Looking through my collection, some of the titles in there dip into the 6s and maybe even 5s. That isn't to say that I haven't been shied away by review scores that are </= 3, but buy-and-large if I have even a glimmering or redeemable interest in a game, I tend to throw it in the mental "maybe" pile and scoop it up during a sale.

In the end, a title may be a great game, but if it doesn't hold your interest, then it isn't worth getting. You know yourself far better than any reviewer could and the decision ultimately rests on you.

Re: Nintendo is Selling its Majority Stake in the Seattle Mariners

I understand the other comments you guys are making, but, in light of current unfoldings, seeing this makes me a bit worried about how much the new management cares about the company.

After all, why waste money on R&D when you can liquidate the company's assets, retire and leave someone else holding the bag. (And no, I'm not including Miyamoto in this group)

Re: Popular Super Mario Maker Speedrunner and Streamer Has All His Levels Deleted by Nintendo

I understand his plight, and maybe he should have been more careful when naming his stages, but it would be nice if they could recover the stages for him under a different name (but the same stage ID).

With that in mind, I really think Nintendo should have more in the way of server caching (so they can restore stages as they deem appropriate), as well as a local backup method (but still tied to your account to avoid plagiarism).

Re: ENKKO to Restore the N64 Controller to Its Former Glory with New Kickstarter Campaign

I remember taking my N64 joysticks apart a few years ago and fixing them. Only one had somewhat noticeable signs of stick wear, and nearly all of the issues were caused by the U-shaped slots in those gear pieces widening. In the end, I just used the superglue-mache trick, added a touch of petroleum jelly, and they were right as rain.

Reading through his Kickstarter campaign though does make me wonder why he's just scanning (and not remodeling/retopologizing some of the more complex pieces).

...anyway for those of you considering the gamecube-style joystick replacements, I whole-heartedly recommend watching this beforehand. (actual mod and impressions start around 4:11)

Re: Site News: Welcome To The Brand New Nintendo Life!

@antdickens Great job on the site design, but I do have to ask, Is there any way we can get back a few borders? Staring at a mostly-white page is quite tiring on the eyes and makes it more difficult to focus on page content.

Also, could we get recent forum posts displayed as some sort of feed (with user avatars beside them). Having them in the top menu just doesn't seem quite right.

Lastly, congrats on the new store, but is there any way to force prices to be shown in a specific currency (or at least filter items which aren't available in the user's set region)?

Re: Cube Life Battles Minecraft for Success in Japan

All right, I can't wait for the update!

I made a few suggestions earlier, and Cypronia wrote me back and hinted that they might be included in the next update.

@bezerker99 I know what you mean. Right now I've been trying to swim to-and-fro the various islands and not starve. (apparently a raft isn't enough, you need to build a 'wooden' raft)

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st January (North America)

I have to say, Zack and Wiki is an awesome game and is probably one of the most underrated titles in my Wii collection.

That said, its not without its faults. While most of the challenge lies in the puzzles, some of the timings in the later levels are devilishly tricky. With that in mind, stay away from online guides, they'll ruin the experience for you.

Re: Giveaway: It's Europe's Turn To Grab A Free Copy Of Cube Life: Island Survival

I won one of the codes on twitter a few days ago, and I have to say I was skeptical at first. However, the more time I've spent with it, the more I've come to like it.

Personally, I think this one deserves a re-review, as many of the issues raised in the nintendolife review have been addressed with the v1.1 update.

@Cypronia I don't know if you guys have already made plans, but perhaps you could add in a gyro-assist camera-control system (like Splatoon), and button-controlled menu navigation. Anyway, I'm sure you guys are more than busy enough already. Thanks again!

Re: Today's Nintendo UK Store Offers Include A Wii Fit U Meter For Less Than The Price Of A Big Mac Meal

shinesprite

I did a bit of digging and found this:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/01/remember_wii_fit_us_free_trial_offer_expires_on_january_31st

If any of you are able to test this out, I would appreciate it.
I already have a balance board and the trial installed on my system (never launched it), but I don't know anyone who bought the pedometer/fit meter, so I can't test it for myself.

If Nintendo had used the 3DS pedometer, or even created a 3DS separate app, I would've jumped on the bandwagon sooner.
