It's time for another North American Nintendo Download Update, and this week brings a few notable releases. We have a big-name fighting title on Wii U, Mario & Sonic competing in the Olympics, cross-buy goodness from Renegade Kid and more besides. Without further pre-amble let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier in the week? Fret not! The details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Mutant Mudds Super Challenge (Renegade Kid, $9.99 or 15% off until 16th / 17th April for those with Mutant Mudds on the same NNID or the E3 Nindies@Home demo, or free if you already own the 3DS version on the same NNID) - Following the success of the original and the 'Deluxe' versions, this follow-up in the break-out Renegade Kid series ramps up the challenge with tough level designs and bosses to tackle. We gave this a big recommendation in our review.
Bird Mania Party (Teyon, $1.99) - A follow-on to the budget runner (or 'flyer') games on 3DS, the party aspect for this HD version comes from some multiplayer options. Two players can tackle the game together in co-op or there's a party competitive mode for five players, with extra competitors using Wii Remotes. We'll fly into a review.
U Host (Bear Box Media, $12.99) - An interesting idea for party hosts with a Wii U, as this promises the ability for you to create your own quiz show either using 1000 pre-loaded questions or by creating your own. We'll tidy up our hair, whiten our teeth and present our review to you soon.
Wii U Retail Download
Pokkén Tournament (Nintendo, $59.99) - This Bandai Namco-developed fighting game began life as an arcade in Japan, before popular demand was met and this Wii U version was announced. With some unique modes and an upcoming tilt at the competitive gaming scene this Wii U entry could be a vital release this year. You can see what we think of this latest major Wii U release in our review. Available from 18th March.
Wii U Virtual Console
Dig Dug II (Bandai Namco, $4.99) - This retro sequel from the NES days moves the action from underground up to the surface. It's certainly quite different from its predecessor and had the neat design point of allowing you to target quick and easy clearances or longer, tougher routes for greater points - we gave it a modest recommendation in our Dig Dug II review.
City Connection (HAMSTER, $4.99) — Another NES title makes its way to the Wii U, with this one very much part of the early 8-bit generation of simplistic, single screen experiences. In our opinion this isn't a retro gem, as you can see in our City Connection review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
OlliOlli (Curve Digital, in discount until 31st March)
Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones (Curve Digital, in discount until 31st March)
Never Alone (E-Line Media, $4.99 until 24th March, normally $14.99)
Blocky Bot (Mobot Studios, on discount until 7th April, normally €2.69 / £1.89)
Paper Monsters Recut (Mobot Studios, on discount until 7th April, normally €2.69 / £1.89)
Island Flight Simulator (Joindots, on discount until 31st March)
Hold Your Fire: A Game About Responsibility (Alkterios Games, $0.99 until 7th April, normally $1.99)
3DS eShop
Mutant Mudds Super Challenge (Renegade Kid, $9.99 or 15% off until 16th April for those with Mutant Mudds on the same NNID, or free if you already own the Wii U version on the same NNID) - The same as its HD brethren, but rather than a shiny resolution it will have 3D visuals perfectly suited to the layered gameplay, and it's worth remembering that with cross-buy you can own both versions from just one purchase. Our review of this 3DS version is right here.
3DS Retail Download
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, $39.99) - It's the portable iteration of this Olympian face-off that arrives first, which includes amiibo support and sports new to the Olympics such as rugby and golf. We'll go for gold in a review. Available from 18th March.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker (Atlus, $29.99 until 28th March, normally $39.99)
SmileBASIC (Smileboom, $4.99 until 21st March, normally $9.99)
OlliOlli (Curve Digital, in discount until 31st March)

3DS Retail DLC
Fire Emblem Fates New DLC Map – Royal Royale (Nintendo, $2.49)
3DS HOME Themes
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: Light & Twilight
That's your lot for the North American Download Update this week; let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

Nothing for me. 100% of the vote is at nothing. lol (I'm the only current vote atm )
nothing for me this week, might plan on getting Pokken soon.
It really frustrates me how NA isn't getting the Hyrule Warriors Legends demo :/ Like what the hell?
Can we not preload Pokken Tournament? Seriously? It's a major release for crying out loud.
Bloody hell.
You didn't get any 3ds Super Nintendo games?
I think I'll let DeSu2 go down further in price before I grab it. If it drops to $20, I'll buy it, but at the moment I have too much else to play.
@MysteriousBebsi It's NoA. They wouldn't be recognizable if they weren't making terrible, anti-consumer choices for the people they sell stuff to.
Nothing for me this week.
I'm actually very excited for Dig Dug II! It's one of my favorite games from childhood. I windage wish it was on 3ds, but wiiu is just as good.
@MysteriousBebsi
Nintendo of America? Actually doing something that will help the company earn money?! GASP You're a madman to think that would ever happen! Edit: Sarcasm aside, I've been indirectly informed that research suggests demos actually harm sales.

MUTANT MUDDS!!!
That is all.
I want Pokken -will get it sometime- planned on day one... ugh ....just can not part with my $60 for it.
I rarely buy any game at full retail -nothing is really ever worth it to me, but I can't see an this one going on sale or showing up in enough used quantities for months, at least.
Edit:
Well, I decided to indulge in a impulse buy - retail Pokken for me - (no download buys for me until they start My Nintendo in the USA). Figure I can play it and sell it off soon enough to enjoy it for a bit, buy it cheap later if I dig it. I don't play enough of any games to justify the expense these days but still have interest is trying games like this.
I'm pretty excited for Mutant Mudds but I'm not buying a thing from the eShop until MyNintendo launches, since we now know that purchases won't be counted retroactively.
Man, I can wait on Mudds but I hope it's out by next Friday. I don't want to wait too long for Hyrule Warriors...
Hmm. I'll grab the two VC games and Mutant Mudds. Pokken will be retail.
This week is all about Mudds!
Hopefully they don't take our mass refusal to buy anything before My Nintendo launches as a lack of interest in their products.
ZELDA theme and Pokemon preorder tomorrow. That sums up my weekend😛
Ill be getting pokken at the end of april, but ill get some of rcdimax discounts and pokemon yellow
People buy Mutant Mudds. It's a good series.
reads through article
sticks nose up at inferior games
goes back to playing Zelda:TP HD
Will buy Pokken as soon as My Nintendo gets rolling. Nothing until then, though.
I'll be downloading Pokkén Tournament but I will try to wait a bit longer to see if MyNintendo comes out to get the Gold Coins.
Edit: @Stu13 my thoughts exactly
Oh man! SmileBASIC is on sale! It's an awesome game for anyone interested in programming or indie dev. Even if you don't want to create your own games you can download and play the games that others have created. (There is a Google spreadsheet floating around with the codes for a whole bunch of games.)
It's a steal at $5 - highly recommended.
@ZAZX Demos have been consistently shown not to increase sales. Besides, there's already a demo out. I bought mine for 59.99 last year.
Yeah, SmileBASIC half off is an amazing deal! Easily worth $5 even if you don't plan on programming. Plenty of fun little games and some nice tools already available to download, and the list is growing! There really is no excuse to not pick it up at this point.
@ZAZX We can't preload anything in Europe..so..yeah...
No HW demo or SNES games for 3DS over here? Well at least I'm saving money
@XCWarrior I actually found Mutant Mudds overrated and boring after a few levels. It was just the same thing over and over for me. The game play and enemies didn't have much variety.
Not enough funds to spare this week, maybe next time.
@PanurgeJr
"Besides there's already a demo out. I bought mine for 59.99 last year."
Oh good, mind telling me how well Hyrule Warriors Legends runs on 3DS then? Is it comfortable to play using the 3DS itself? Does it seem like it makes good use of the 3DS's features? What about the New 3DS? I'm sure the Wii U version was very telling of all of these things. Oh wait, of course it wasn't because the Wii U isn't a 3DS.
Ignoring the fact that paying for a demo pretty much defeats the entire purpose of a demo.
@manu0
That's really unfortunate to hear. Preloads are such a nice thing to have, especially if you have slow internet.
@MysteriousBebsi I've always been a big proponent of demos - Project Guard needs one b/c I have no idea what is going on in that video and I really like tower defense games - but I have to agree w/ their decision not to offer a demo for HWL if there is a noticeable difference between the old and new 3DS versions. I haven't seen it myself, only know what I've read, but that would be a good enough reason not to have one. I'd like one, but it makes sense not to offer it.
Nothing for me. I might get Pokken later on
Getting the physical copy of Pokken Tournament tomorrow so maybe I'll get the Twilight Princess 3DS theme.
@grumblebuzzz No game is going to work for everyone. At least you gave it a shot. If you enjoy a challenge, and grew up on the NES, it's a great throwback mixed with new era features.
Bird Mania Party!!!!!!
Mudds! Muddsmuddsmuddsmudds! Not gonna wait for MyNintendo to launch, want to play now. Finished 100%ing the first one again on the bus this morning, really wish I didn't have to wait another 8 hours to get home and download Super Challenge.
Pokken Tournament is on its way from Amazon with a 20% discount. I would of not bought it if it were not for the discount.
@mystman12
Also, I just found out that tomorrow is the day they announce winners from the programming competition held last year. So you can expect at least a handful of other really cool games (and other applications) coming soon.
One big selling point with this release is how much easier it's become for people who just want to try playing what others create. Instead of scanning lots and lots of QR codes, you just find the public key for that program and download it directly. Super easy!
...Sorry, maybe I got too excited.
i shall buy nothing until the my nintendo thing comes out. none of the purchases earn any points or anything else until then.
NoA is making my decision to hold off on buying a New 3DS very easy. I would love to have snes games on the go, but I'm not going to invest if they don't. I'm not expecting three-plus games a week, but I would expect something more than three weeks of silence. I'm just worried that this is all going to amount to the VC on 3DS, which was quietly abandoned.
I know that I've complained about this subject a lot, but having spot-on emulation of these games is a big reason why I adopt the platforms.
@ZAZX You're right, the Wii U version-as-demo line was trolling. Successfully, too, since I got you to use boldface.
But my actual point stands--demos don't increase sales, so you were mocking NoA out of ignorance of business reality. Hence the trolling.
I've always wanted to try Dig Dug II
Nothing for me this week except I'm picking up the physical version of Pokkén Tournament tomorrow morning. Hopefully the new account system will be out next week because I want to get Earthbound for my 3DS when it comes out next Thursday.
I hardcore recommend Never Alone. I'm also getting Pokken Tournament in the mail tomorrow, but I'm thinking about downloading U Host.
Aside from Pokken Tournament, which I'm getting physical, I guess...nothing for me this week. I am somewhat interested in Mario & Sonic Rio, though.
@PanurgeJr
Oh well, I fell victim to a troll. I'm just used to people being woefully misinformed on the internet and try to help educate. I'll admit I was wrong, after searching for sources research suggests demos don't increase sales, they hurt them (though that is something you didn't mention.)
Actually, why didn't you do the sensible thing, and link some sources to back up your claim instead of resorting to trolling and thus breaking the Community Rules? Google shows several good results you could have cited.
Regardless, I thank you for enlightening me indirectly to the sales potential of demos and for reminding me to do more research before commenting in the future.
@ZAZX
Agreed. In fact, I think this should be for every game on any Nintendo system, but that won't happen
I won't be downloading anything, but I will be getting Mario & Sonic tomorrow. Can't wait!
Getting the FE DLC (Even though I'm nowhere near done with the games) getting Pokken and the controller retail. Gonna tackle UPS guy when he gets here.
wait i get super challenge for free if I own the 3DS game?
when does the eshop update? unsure if I have the 3DS game thought I did...
@BanjoPickles They announced the release schedule when they launched the New 3DS VC, so it's not a surprise that there's nothing this week.
@PanurgeJr If the demo lowers sales then maybe the game sucks? Better to make customers buy it untested, eh?
The Wii U version is not a demo for the 3DS version.
My gaming dollars this week will be going to my retail copy of POKKEN TOURNAMENT tomorrow.
@ZAZX So much like the movie industry will use deceptive trailers and ads to put butts in the seats for movies, the gaming industry is okay with using "bullshot" filled trailers to sell games. Nevermind that crappy game you tricked people into buying will probably sour a portion of them on your company as a whole. At least you scammed them out of that $59.99.
As for me, there will be no purchases until the new My Nintendo system goes live. I am not in a rush to own anything, so I will wait until I'll be rewarded for the purchase.
Smile Basic for five bucks is a maybe. Otherwise, I'm broke.
Not downloading anything but will be buying Pokken at retail
Getting Pokken for my day after birthday, WE ARE POKKEN!
@Whopper744
I believe the SNES VC is on a 3 week rotation schedule. So next Thursday we should be getting DKC, and uh, can't remember the other 2
@manu0 Very true. I was just hoping that third-party games would fill in the gaps.
@JaxonH Mario Kart and Earthbound.
1 more week until more SNES 3DS VC games...
Mutant Mudds 1 1/2!
Nothing this week, might eventually pick up Mutant Mudds
I wish that North America would have gotten the Hyrule Warriors Legend demo. While I understand that a demo could hurt its sales, I would have never boughten Fire Emblem Awakening if I hadn't tried it's demo.
Also, where is the original Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii U eshop? If NOA didn't want it to interfere with Xenoblade Chronicles X or the New 3DS version, that time has passed. Any Xenoblade Chronicles fan wants it.
Nothing for me this week. No digital titles for me until My Nintendo launches.
Pokken for mii...tomorrow physically.
Still ploughing my way through Return to Popo', Yo-Kai Watch & Stella Glow (loving!) so I won't be picking anything up gaming wise til Sega 3D Classics Collection drops at the end of next month.
I bet that Twilight Princess theme is great. Wish we had themes on the Wii U. Y'know, like EVERY CONSOLE SINCE THE PSP!!!
Yes! Finally a game on my wishlist went on sale! It's been so long i forgot this feeling of satisfaction in being patient. SmileBASIC is mine! I loved programming in BASIC as a kid... can't wait to get back into it. I may even be able to see a few ideas I had as a kid come to fruition.
Downloading Pokken, the Fates DLC, and that TP home theme.
squadoosh this week
still FE'ing it up though and haven't even gotten around to the Bravely Second demo yet
Nothing for me this week. Bought Terraria a few days ago and it's pretty addictive lol. I'll probably wait till they launch My Nintendo to buy new games, unless the discount is unprecedented.
Lol You'll redo the reviews for games for the N3DS but not between 3DS & WiiU. Weird.
But anyway, I'm reinterested in City Connection again, but I still think I'll get it on my 3DS instead eventually.
@ZAZX You may, of course, report whomever you wish. But since my comment wasn't insulting or mocking, but merely a slightly ridiculous claim designed to elicit a response, which is less insulting than the mocking tone you originally took (and you'd be right to insist that it was barely that), I don't expect Nintendo Life to take too much umbrage.
Unless you're trolling me and I just fell into your trap. Well played, sir or madam. Well played.
@Crono1973 I believe the effect of demos is independent of the quality of the games. More people are convinced not to buy who would have than vice versa; in part because some will be content with what is freely available and feel no need to pay for more. So yes, in a sense, it is better for publishers not to let consumers try out the game. Of course, that's not completely true, or they wouldn't give away review copies to sites like this one. They have to let some word get out.
As for Wii U version-as-demo, if you really care about what I meant search the comments. It won't be worth your time.
@PanurgeJr If the demo is all you need, then the gameplay obviously didn't hook you. If you buy a game like that because it has no demo, you have wasted your money. You think that's ok?
You know, most other products can be returned.
@twistedbee A childhood fav of mine, too.
@Everyone_Else: I am also gonna be looking into Mudds, since i own the original on 3ds. Also, might soon get Rytmik for that price.
SMILEBasic, Mutant Mudds, Pokken Tournament, and Dig Dug II all interest me. I'll purchase SMILEBasic immediately, but I'll hope off the others until I get money or when either goes on sale.
Just got Mario Kart and F-Zero for mah n3ds, 2 great ones per week is great tempo and sizewise, hope they'll keep it up and not suddenly end in a few weeks(which I could see happening sadly)
Also got the demo for Bit!Boy!Arcade for some reason and found it to be superb, lucky shot!
Didn't Konami and Capcom have at least 2-3 games each that would come to New3ds snes VC too?
Dig Dug 2 woohoo!
@Uberchu
It's worded very oddly. A better way to say would be if you own a previous version of Mudds, you get a 15% discount. If you buy, it's cross buy. Owning the 3DS version litterally means owning Super Challenge 3DS version, not a prior game.
@ThomasBW84 Not to be a bother, but some of the titles under Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts are listed with EU prices.
Pokken is arriving either tomorrow or this upcoming Monday for me, so I'm getting that! Amazon better come through!
I also have Map Pack 1 for Fates so I'm automatically getting its DLC as well. Excited more for Pokken though, I need it tomorrow if possible!
Pretty much going to stay away from Hyrule Legends since i still have an old 3DS, but at least a demo would have let me see how it ran.
@MysteriousBebsi
They did, it's called Hyrule Warriors.
It's not like you NEED a demo. The full version has been out for months, and it only takes 5 minutes of research to figure out that the framerate can only be expressed as a fraction and that the Wii U version is far superior.
That being said, it really bothers me how they don't give a demo for any of the big games being released. The Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate demo is ridiculous. 3 monsters to fight, every weapon in the game AND online support? It's got more content than most games! And don't even get me started on the full version of the game (two words: 400 hours)!
@cleveland124 ok thank you! turns out my 3DS or Wii U does not have mutant mudds...
guess it was me playing the demo too much...
nice to know theres cross buy.
You suck Nintendo. I don't even feel like explaining anymore.
No point in getting anything till the end of the month. Lots of time to start writing complaint emails about My Nintendo not being retroactive from when club Nintendo shut down.
That U host actually looks pretty cool if you have enough people.
I'll end up downloading the Pokken Tournament demo once that releases in North America!
I want Pokken badly...
@happylittlepigs What the hell? Somebody's salty that Hyrule Warriors is being ported to the 3DS :/
@MysteriousBebsi Moreso salty about everything to do with the game. I'm not a fan of the way they've done DLC with the new version. The cheaper, worse version of the game gets more DLC than the full, better version, but only some, and it's available for download on Wii U, but not right now? The whole thing's a mess.
Speaking of a mess, the 3DS port comes to mind. The Wii U version looked sooo good, and the 3DS version looks pretty terrible and comes at a lowwwww framerate. That's fine for Smash, which released the Wii U version after, as an upgrade to the 3DS version. But why release the worse version after the better one? And cheaper, despite having more content that would've cost money on the Wii U version? Imagine if they did this with Smash. Wii U version launches first, then they wait 9 months and release a 3DS port for $40 and include Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta. It would be a big F U to the people who purchased Smash for Wii U first. They are the loyal fans, they bought it upfront for more money, they should get the bonus!
I'm also upset at the fact that they couldn't make the damn thing New 3DS exclusive. They can't even use the 3D effect on the old systems because it would run at .5 frames per second! It's obvious that the old system can't run the game effectively, but the New 3DS can. The New 3DS only has 2 other exclusive titles, so Hyrule Warriors Legends would make a welcome addition to the party of 2. AND if that wasn't enough, it fits the pattern of the new 3DS exclusives! Xenoblade is a port, Binding of Isaac is a port, Legends is a port! They couldn't show any love to the adopters of their new system, which has sold very well, by the way.
Disclaimer: this rant is based on the business dealings of Nintendo, and does not reflect my feelings on the game, which I do not own, nor intend to own due to the fact that I dislike button-mashing hack-n-slash games.
Still just a waitin' for that U Host review...
