The Legend of Zelda Wii U was announced at E3 way back in 2014, with some lovely looking footage of an HD Hyrule getting fans hyped up all the way. At the time, it was announced that it would be launching in 2015, a date that even then seemed unlikely. Sure enough, the game was later delayed to 2016, and ever since we've been waiting on a narrower release window to be announced. Well, the release window has been updated, but most of you probably won't like it.
In the financial briefing that just took place, it was revealed that Zelda Wii U is being pushed back to 2017. Yes, you read that right. 2017. Rumours have been circulating for some time now that this game would be a dual release with the Wii U and NX, much like how Twilight Princess was between GameCube and Wii. It is now confirmed that will be the case, by Nintendo of Europe. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait?
What do you think? Will the final product be worth the delay? Why do you think it was delayed again? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Grabs popcorn
Said when it was delayed last time it would become an NX title.
It's late at night here. When I wake up in the morning I expect a huge list of comments.
Awesome! /s
It was so obvious it would come to NX but honestly I was hoping NX will come out in 2016 (not end of fiscal 2016). Sigh....there are still Wii U games I haven't played so guess I have much more time to buy them. On the other side FFXV is coming 30th Sept. so he will keep me busy.
And the world gave a collective shrug and said "Yep."
Well, if the NX comes out in March of next year, then I guess it only makes sense for this game to release then too.
Nice grass
As long as it will be awesome I'm fine with that, of course I would be waiting for the NX's version...hopefully we will get some cool dynimics as in SS!
Not making the same mistake as Twilight Princess; pre-ordering both versions!
My E3 hype is gone and I am over it. F U NINTENDO.
Officially vaporware at this point.
This comment section is going to be a doozy!
I'm more curious for what this means the NX will be. I'd assume it'll be mostly the same experience between the two, so perhaps the NX actually will have some kind of GamePad-like controller?
@ElementSponge Ha, hold onto your hats! If you think this'll be exciting, head on over to the article about the NX skipping E3.
Here we go!
It's kind of concerning that they've not just said it will be there at the NX launch.
So if this comes out at the end of 2017, it was be 5 years after it was announced. Three and a half years after it was shown off. The irony is that everyone lambasted Sony and MS for basing their E3 2014 presentations on games that were over a year away, not like Nintendo.
So much anger right now! But hey, I'm 30 next March, guess i know what I'll be getting for my 30th...
I'm disappointed to hear that the Wii U will go without having it's own individual Zelda title, even if I wasn't interested in this latest outing in The Legend of Zelda series. I'm also disappointed that they are not giving Wii U owners a nice early treat in having the Wii U version release for the holidays.
Along with the 'no NX being shown at E3' news though, this surely means we are getting more Wii U and 3DS games announced for 2016. They'll have to release something to cover the holiday period, and whilst there were some mixed opinions about some of the late 2015 games of last year, there were still newly released games available in that time period.
Not really that surprised about the dual version but a little bummed about the release date. Now I have to wait and understand what version I want...I am so regretting getting Twilight Princess on Wii, I would have loved the GameCube version a lot more.
Whelp....dat artwork...
This E3 is going to blow hard for Nintendo. Why, Nintendo, why?
Nothing against the decision itself, but may I say this sound slightly annoying after 2 years having them keep confirming it was a Wii U exclusive and bashing the NX rumour?
I know that happens all the time, but I thought Nintendo was more trustable ;_;
I'm ok with this!
No NX at E3 when it's releasing before the next E3 is ridiculous and no Zelda this Christmas is gutting. What do Nintendo have to show at E3 now? Going to be one short Digital Event.
Hello darkness my old friend...
Doubt I'll even buy it for the Wii U now, since the NX version will probably be either enhanced or have a better framerate..
Nintendo is making me seriously regret buying the WiiU. I pretty much bought it for Hyrule Warriors and this, and now it's been delayed again! Also, puching it back is missing a golden opportunity to release it for Zelda's 30th anniversary, now the anniversary game is a HD remake of a meh game. C'mon Nintendo, we've been waiting five years for a new console Zelda, hurry it up!
Hmmm. Here's what I take from this-
this confirms the NX is a home console and that the controller for the device can't be too radically different from the Wii u for it to have the same game on both. Sure twilight had motion controls which were different from GameCube, but realistically it just mapped button presses to waggles.
It also confirms that when its all said and done the Wii U will have had over 4 years on the market.
It should also mean that we get some new Wii u games announced for Xmas this year!!! Mario party 11: Amiibo Cash In Festival!!!
seems normal, lol
It's disappointing that they are holding back the release on Wii U just to dual launch it. There is nothing this holiday.
@MitchVogel You need to have the MJ gif to add impact to your post.
I'm very Very VERY angry and disappointed by this and I feel like they are PURPOSEFULLY delaying it now just so it can simultaneously release on NX and Wii U on Q1 of 2017 so it looks good in their fiscal report earnings.
Very sad about this Nintendo Wii U owners should be getting Zelda in 2016, Its been delayed now 2-3 times? and we were promised 2016.
@rferrari24 Your comment reminded me of the whole Rayman Legends fiasco. shudder
Anyone who remembers Twilight Princess should have seen this coming when Zelda was delayed for the first time.
Like I said in the other thread I think a system straddle isn't the best option. As it will likely chug on the wiiu and underwhelm on the NX. This delay leaves us with no holiday game and while I know Nintendo wants to give the NX a good start I think they need to throw Wiiu owners a bone here. Temporary exclusivity for the wiiu could help even if the game straddles. But at this point temporary exclusivity would allow them to take advantage of the anniversary. Launch the WiiU game holiday and then Make it a launch title for the NX for the people that aren't ever going to get a WiiU. But we shall see what they do...but I am hoping for a kick arse marketing campaign.
EDIT:Half my post got eaten... put back what I think I said originally.
Zelda Wii U will be playable at E3, but will also be the only playable Wii U game at E3. No playable Tokyo Mirage Sessions or Paper Mario.
So muck for "A year of Zelda" for the 30th anniversary.
(my backlog is breathing a sigh of relief)
@Ryu_Niiyama Noted!
I'm gutted, another year to wait. It would've been a nice gesture to Wii u owners to release it this year for them so they get it early and then an nx port later. I don't think it would've hurt sales, it could even improve them as people would probably want to play it as early as possible on Wii u, then the nx version would appeal to new nd owners and there would be plenty of people who would double dip if it is enhanced. The way they've decided to do it means there is very little point in even having a Wii u version now.
I'm surprised at this. I fully expected a dual release, bit for certain a holiday release on WiiU and ported to NX for launch
All I can say now is that there better be some good games for this holiday season on the Wii U. None of this Amiibo Festival crud. Give us something interesting.
sigh guess I'll go to bed now
First it was 2015, then 2016 and NOW 2017! The way they've handled the release of the game has been all kinds of crappy. The hype is gone. I'm not gonna say I bought a Wii U for the game, but it was one of the MAIN reasons! So consider me mad and disappointed!
Will the NX version be superior beyond a technical level? Or is it just a simple port? Why should I buy a lesser version if there's a better one out there? It's not an exclusive anymore...
And now the Wii U doesn't have any holiday games at all! For shame Nintendo.
Would have made much more sense if they made the Wii U version's development a priority, released it this autumn in order for it not to be too close to the NX's release date, and then focus on the NX version.
Still, I truly feel bad for Nintendo fans who own a Wii U and are primarily Zelda fans above all other Nintendo franchises. I'm a Mario and Smash fan so I kinda got off easy this generation... at least Zelda fans got to hand Ganondorf's forces their backsides in massive numbers by playing as whichever incarnation of Link they prefer, which at least is a consolation in terms of fanservice. (And it's more than Kingdom Hearts fans - such as myself - still awaiting the third numbered title can say, knowing it might come out next year or in 2018.)
People are making a big assumption this is coming for the NX launch. They've said the NX is launching in March, so why is Zelda just a vague 2017? No guarantee it's coming Q1.
Makes so much sense. I will be buying both though. I regret not buying TP on Gamecube as well at the time. Cost me an arm and a leg a couple of years later!
@MitchVogel Thank you! Much better.
Oh well, at least there are plenty of new releases on the way to fill the gap...
@MitchVogel That's better
The Zelda delay is complete crap. I'm sure the game will be amazing, but it has gotten more delays than any other Zelda to date and clearly the delays are now the fault of the NX. The Wii U has already had a pretty rough life cycle and now it's successor is making things even worse on the poor, underrated console. I'm just fine with the NX not launching until 2017, but I was expecting and looking forward to seeing what it actually is at E3... I mean, what the hell are they gonna have to show at E3 now? I hope they have surprises or something... This is not good Nintendo...
@AlexSora89 Which would be me. I love Nintendo and am pretty good at enjoying games for what they are (Wiiu is still my favorite system even without an original Zelda), but Zelda is special to me. I won't say I feel betrayed but I'm pretty down about this news. The only positive is that I'm hoping the straddle means the NX has some form of the gamepad.
The dual release was to be expected, but... delayed to 2017? Aww, come on.
At the very least they could've released the Wii U version this Holiday.
Do they have any Holiday titles?? For their sake I hope they have some unannounced projects for Wii U upcoming this year.
I'm sure the E3 presentation of the next Zelda will be amazing, but no NX? Just what.
I think the reason for the delay is obvious; Nintendo wants so badly to release the NX version as a launch title and give it the best chance it can have that they're screwing over the Wii U owners by not releasing this probably-already-finished game on the system they already have.
It would be an exact repeat of Twilight Princess, if not for the simultaneous release, but I think that ends up hurting the NX version in this case. Zelda '17 being an NX launch title won't mean much if it isn't exclusive to that system, even for a month at least.
If you stare into the abyss long enough, you'll find Nintendo staring back.
@BakaKnight Please could you link me to a quote where Nintendo said Zelda U would be exclusive to Wii U and not be on NX - I don't remember seeing that.
Delays always suck, but this is still coming to Wii U so I don't really understand the fuss. Nintendo is taking nothing away from you by also releasing it on NX.
Eh, you take the good with the bad. On the plus side I won't have to make a difficult decision between PSVR and NX now. Also, my annual bonus is in March so that's the expense side sorted! It would have been nice to have a new Zelda game this Xmas, but think of the glorious graphical splendor we'll have from playing it on new tech!
After being a Nintendo fan my whole life, but all the news today has made me just about down with the company. They're making one of my favourite franchises a mobile game, Zelda the next Final Fantasy XV, and yet again pushing it back, and putting it on the NX as well. So me who bought the Wii U two years ago and has barely any great games, who has been waiting for Zelda since the first E3. I was even more hyped when they showed the new graphics. And I get a sub par inferior version. Words escape me.
Zelda HAS to be a launch title for NX. Why else would they delay it?
(Famous last words!)
Still love you Nintendo. XXX
At least we now have a firm date, and will be getting a good look at it at E3. A bit disappointed but I'll just spend the time working through my back log and adding to my GC collection
@MitchVogel that MJ popcorn gif was the absolutely PERFECT first comment, respect!!!
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As long as it's not like TP where the game was finished and could have been out before the Wii launch I won't mind.
I just shared the tweets on social media and some people are responding with mixed and negative feedback.
So we're going to get extended coverage for a game we basically know close to nothing about but are all excited for, We got confirmation of a date (well a month and year) for Nintendo's next gen console, and people are...mad?
W.T.H...
@B0wzurr That made me laugh haha
Celebrating Zelda's 30th with a remake and an E3 special but no new game.Oh Nintendo !
Wii U will be the first Nintendo console not to have its own game, I'm not including re-makes of course. Sorry but this is stupid especially as this year would be the year to bring it out. holds head in hands
Nintendo you are killing yourself with all this
@AlexSora89 My words exactly. Especially the Kingdom Hearts part; it's been over 10 years since the release of Kingdom Hearts II.
Nintendo's pushing the reset button i guess, and trying for a fresh start in 2017 with the 3DS and mobile carrying them thru till the new year. I'm guessing Zelda was ready on Wii U but the NX won't be ready to launch until 2017 so they're holding it back so it can be a launch title and drive NX sales. I don't mind the delay really as for me it's an extra 4 months. I'm sure this is why we got Twilight Princess. I'm also sure the NX being held back till March, and oddly not being shown off at E3, is why Zelda will be the only playable game at E3. I'm thinking this lends credence to the rumors of a massive launch lineup but i am a little concerned that the quality of the games may suffer and we're going to end up with stuff like Ultra Smash.
I'm not too bothered by the delay, since I was going to wait for the NX version to come out anyway, but I can't believe that they won't show the console at E3...Such a waste; they could have shown off the concept for the console and a few major launch games and gotten some hype and media attention. But nope; now they probably will announce everything in Nintendo Directs...
Welp...
Well, i guess that means a barebones 2016 for Wii U owners.
"Oh boy…"
Indeed.
I'm sure the game will be pretty great, of that I'm still very confident, but that's almost beside the point at this point in time.
It's a whole bunch of the other stuff I've read about Nintendo today that worries me going forward, and a lot more beyond the stuff we heard today.
So pathetic...11 month drought starts here
@gcunit To be fair, I guess they only confirmed a Wii U version, that is happening, not an exclusive, althought in all honestly I remembered this "small" detail after posting my comment ^_^;
Still a shame the Wii U won't have a Zelda title all for itself, what was the last console having this fate? The virtual boy? >.>;
I don't really like that, because to me it could set a dangerous precedent. Basically, if their hardware doesn't sell, flagship titles might be ported to the next system, too. What about all those who bought a Wii U mainly for Zelda U? If they feel they got their money worth, then okay, but if not?
I really hope that all those rumours about Wii U titles being ported to NX aren't true. You know the games you've put hundreds of hours into? Just rebuy them. Thanks for being a loyal customer and f you. The delay kind of gets into this direction. I understand that it will be more polished with the delay, but if it wasn't necessary, why not release the Wii U version earlier?
It would be something else though, if the NX would turn out to be a portable.
I hope that any possible significant online features are shared between both versions. Meaning that you can play with or share items with NX players even if you play the Wii U version.
@FX102A Mistake?
@UKFA I think the problem stems from this being E3's focus this year. Yeah, it's exciting, but it's just one game. I'm still optimistic for the surprise announcements they'll no doubt make, but something tells me it'll be another year of Ultra Smashes and amiibo Festivals. People want games to get excited for, but Nintendo is making it sound like they're gonna be holding a lot back at E3 this year.
Dammit. If Yooka-Laylee gets delayed as well, I'll literally have nothing new to buy for Wii U this year.
@Peach64
Let's just forget about E3 2015 that was only about games releasing in the very near future? But I'm used to you being like that. Gotta fight those "fanboys", huh?
@SetupDisk sorry but that is clearly the case here.
So Nintendo have taken to blatantly making things up, we are delaying it to "improve the quality of the game" No you are delaying to put it on you new console, so that you can market the NX launch with a Zelda game and pretend it's not a Wii U port. Had they wanted to, this could have easily launched this year on Wii UK, a console which they have now confirmed is dead and gets no real support for a whole year before the new console launches.
Why is NX not at E3? Nobody knows what it is yet and surely that is a great chance to grab the attention of gamers who skipped the Wii U, especially when they're doing everything in their power to annoy current Wii U owners. Funnily enough the main reason I bought a Wii U was for the new Zelda
The pessimistic side of me wonders if the game was delayed in order to simultaneously launch on both systems, though that is unlikely but still, you can't help but wonder. This year is going to be a graveyard If there aren't very many new games to show off this year at E3.
So how WILL Nintendo celebrate Zelda's 30th? If it's just a remaster and a playable demo then that sucks big time. Perhaps there will be another 3DS title coming later this year waiting to be announced at E3; Tri Force Heros 2 anyone!
@Dpishere How is it unlikely? It's the most plausible reason by a landslide.
I'm suprised there isn't more complaining than there is. I'll most likely be getting the NX version since I assume it will be a more powerful system.
This is just a giant middle finger they're waving at the few fans that bothered to even buy a Wii U. I'm sad to see the company I once thought as respectful to its supporters spitting in the face of its most loyal fanbase. Disgusting.
Sure, Wii U failed. Nintendo could've still give it life support to not make the situation this pathetic. Now the release window is a wasteland and the company reminds me of end times Sega, which threw out console after console hoping the next one would succeed; slowly corroding their core fanbase.
With that I raise my middle finger back at Nintendo. I will fondly remember the days of my youth with Melee and Sunshine. Sadly, there won't be more memories like that. /end of drama.
@rjejr
I suppose I shouldn't ever question you again when it comes to dates. You've earned it. Truly amazing how you know these things. Thinking it's going to be early 2017 unless our NX predictions were WAY off.
On the flip said, it's a dual release on NX as I knew it would be. At least the wait to see it is drawing close. E3 we'll see our darling game finally.
@ClockworkMario
Oh for goodness sake man. It's a game delay, not the gaming apocalypse.
"Reminds me of end times Sega, which threw out console after console"
Clearly this is the exact same thing. When NX drops, poor Wii U will have only been at market 6 months. Be upset, or disappointed, I know I kinda am. But the game will come. Hopefully early 2017. If it's not, then I'll be very disappointed.
Aw man!
I don't mind the dual release, in fact, I think it's a good idea.
But having to wait even longer... well I assume it'll be worth it.
I always said give them as much time as they need, a big Zelda game needs time and they never disappointed, so i'm willing to wait. But I was really looking forward to playing it this year...
Whelp, that just happened. Hopefully, I'll end up with both versions to try out.
Still disappointing it's being delayed...again.
Haha, yeah.
Twilight Princess dual console launch brought Wii a lot of early adopter. Nintendo wish to repeat the same thing, hoping the same luck will come again....but what worked in the past will not work again. Life is like that, it is strange. People are strange.
I don't care for the dual release, as I'll be waiting a while to get NX (if at all, and I always said 2017 was the NX year); but not releasing Zelda WiiU in 2016, with no major games from now on, it's a BIG mistake.
Sigh... what's their big holiday title? What will they show at E3 without the NX?
Gahh. T_T
No way am I getting an NX, I've lost all confidence.
On top of recent software being lacking in quality (apparently Star Fox was held back to tweak it????) with no sign of it improving, not a big game in sight, and the relatively poor support U owners have had - this is another major kick in the teeth. Only way I'd buy an NX would be if Ninty upgraded ALL my Wii U games (the ones rumoured to have upgraded NX versions) FOR FREE... as a token of goodwill for standing buy Wii U this far ... and for this next year where im guessing Wii U will get even less support! This whole situation has been Nintendo's fault and once again it's the consumer that has to pay for their mistakes. Much as I adore Nintendo this is completely UNACCEPTABLE!!!
Not really bothered if i'm honest, I can wait
Actually, Zelda U was announced during the January 2013 Nintendo Direct...
I'm not bothered by this at all, but I feel like this will be very split. Some people will be upset it isn't coming until 2017, and others will be happy it's getting released on both the Wii U and NX. I'm personally really happy they said anything about it
Not surprised or annoyed by this, actually a logical decision they need big games for NX otherwise it will sink like Wii U did.
@FX102A Your comment made me lol, I'll be doing the same though.
Well NX or bust for me. I just hope that I can play my Wii U games on it.
Gives me more time to play my other games. No, really.
@FX102A Now THAT my friend is a VERY good idea!
YES! This is the best possible news to wake up to. I'm still more eager to play Star Fox Zero, but this announcement did just make Zelda MUCH more appealing.
Mighty Number 9 has some delay competition now!
One more year? Again? Unbelievable. And remember we were waiting it to come out in 2015?
Waiting for the Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS port to the NX News.
Feel royally screwed over yeah I've got lots of games I like for Wii U but one of main reasons I bought it was for Zelda U and now if I get it, 4 years late, it'll be the inferior version unless I buy the new console
Goodbye Wii U. You gave us some good times.
This is further proof that the NX WON'T be backwards-compatible with Wii U games.
@John_Enigma Wii was compatible with GC when they did the same thing for Twilight Princess. What kind of proof is that?
the wild ride continues
Not surprised at all, who didn't see this coming?
@Beechbone Good point. Nvm then.
Yup, time to start saving $$$ for NX. I don't know if I'll be able to pull it off but I want to be there day one now.
Well that is a terrible way to start a morning.
I'm a great believer in taking as long as it takes for these things but its frustrating to see such an empty release schedule for the Wii U. Hopefully they'll drop a few surprises for us before they go..
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😭
I think most of us expected this. As long as they don't delay the Wii U version, like they did with Twilight Princess on Gamecube I won't get too upset.
I will admit it: I was wrong. I will accept that. Hell, I'm actually happy they revealed this, because that means we have one less NX leak to worry about (though I am fairly confident that we're still going to get a ****-ton of leaks relating to the controller and rest of the launch lineup). Feels like a bit of a slap to the face for Wii U owners, though. I mean...it's going to be the only Nintendo console (excluding the Virtual Boy) that doesn't have it's own exclusive Zelda game (I mean a main one. Hyrule Warriors doesn't count), but hey! Maybe it'll be released on the Wii U this year, so we won't have to wait much longer-OKAY! 2017, eh!? ALRIGHTY THEN! Guess I should start looking at the positives! I have more time to work on my backlog!...The Holiday lineup is going to be a disaster again, isn't it? Jesus Christ, Nintendo...
sigh...oh well back to playing twilight princess hd
Delayed again! Kinda sad that the Wii U is the only Nintendo home console to not have an exclusive Zelda game but if the NX version will be better then so be it.
@BinaryFragger
It's the samething that happened with the original Wii. Over 2011 and 2012 there were 4 games released that were worth a damn for that system, that's it. I don't know why anybody is surprised or p*ssed off about this. The Wii U was a pretty big fail after the Wii, Nintendo is moving on. All companies do this. MS couldn't have pulled the plug faster on the original Xbox, and going off rumors it's possible the plug could be pulled even sooner on the Xbox One, and Sony dropped the Vita faster than any company has ever dropped a platform so I don't get the complaining. Not being an apologist. This is just the way things go.
you know this doesn't bother me at all, because at the end of the day i'm still going to be able to get the game, hell i might even have a NX by that point
and it's not like this is the first Zelda game to be released on 2 systems at once, Twilight Princess was released on both the GameCube and the Wii
people are moaning for such a dumb reason, who cares if the Wii U doesn't have an exclusive Zelda or if it was delayed so they could release both versions at once, it's not like the game has been cancelled, just wait for the game to be released, play it and have fun
@KoopaTheGamer
It's hard to be a KH fan at times, huh?
@Ryu_Niiyama
At least it's coming out for the WiiU as well. Who hoped Super Paper Mario would come out on the GameCube had it worse.
Called it.
Come on Nintendo 2017! It better change my life. Also that concept art looks amazing. Link looks so good!
Can't say I'm surprised, but hopefully it'll be really good on each system!
It makes sense.....it will most likely be a launch title for the NX!!!Hope is gonna be good!!!
Well at least we Nintendo still have Pokémon.
@BinaryFragger
Yeah, Wii U certainly had some great games. I think its biggest problem was it was released a year too late and as Nintendo itself admitted, it wasn't as prepared for HD gaming as it should've been in 2012. NX can be a nice return to form but I do want some more details before fully committing to a day one purchase. I'm definitely going to get one eventually though.
Really lame, Nintendo. Now what am I supposed to play during the holidays? Hopefully they have BIG announcements during E3. Otherwise, I'm very ticked off.
There's one positive to this...
At least we know the game is going to be released.
@AlexSora89 Sure is, but also rewarding!
You know how Hyrule Legends performs like a turd on the original 3DS? Yeah, I do. Wanna play the new Zelda? Better get ready to spend on a new console, or you'll probably have to deal with a considerably worse experience. So frustrating...
I am so angry with Nintendo now!!! There have been many delays of their games as of late. However, this delay really really really hurts!!!
It feels like they are saying, "**** You Wii U Owners!"
I have never been more upset with Nintendo than right now!!!
Well, there it is. I knew it would happen, because I just didn't see a new Zelda coming this year if they were launching Twilight Princess HD in March.
This is officially it. I'm done with Nintendo. I'm done being explicitly lied to about release dates, getting poor customer service, and greatly dissatisfied with where the companies focus is heading. I'll be getting Zelda for the Wii U used whenever I can, and that's it.
Well, I won't be buying anything more for my Wii U. Star Fox was decent but ultimately a disappointment held back by an egregious decision about gameplay mechanics. Time to withdrawal into Steam as I await the next Nintendo console.
Whelp, time to start saving for a day one NX.
At least I still have my SNES.
@KoopaTheGamer
Rewarding and/but hard. Decide which conjunction applies best here.
Lol, man the escape pods Nintendo.
On one hand, another delay stinks. On the other, getting the first piece of fresh news and footage for Zelda Wii U in two years is nice.
This sucks! Why even start the hype train when it will never get to the station? I'm not even excited about this game anymore.
That's fine, I'd rather have an amazing game that took a long time to make rather than a decent game that was rushed
Wooooooah. I'm legitimately floored. As disappointed as I am...I'm essentially ok with the launch formula because it means Zelda will be an even better game. But that basically sinks Nintendo for 2016.
This just shows how awful these long stretches of time from initial tease to release date are.
Ah, I guessed this one last year, its TP on the Gamecube / Wii scenario again!
I don't know what to think. I think Nintendo is hurting themselves or has. Only time will tell if they'll recover.
So the big incentive game to buy an NX will be on Wii U, and everyone with a Wii U will be too pissed off to do the upgrade. Meanwhile, everyone else already has a ps4 or Xbox One. How is Nintendo so bad at this?
I'm done with them. I bought a WiiU for Zelda and the WiiU now isn't getting a single exclusive Zelda game. F*ck em, you can only treat your core audience so bad.
Why would anyone get an NX at this point anyway? After how much Nintendo has done over their core audience on Wii and WiiU you'd have to have Stockholm syndrome.
@Frank-The-Tank - profanity is against the community rules. Please refrain. Thanks muchly
Well, as Miyamoto says:
"A rushed game is bad forever. A delayed game is eventually delayed again... possibly forever."
As for why people would want to get an NX "at this point" (#163); probably because people might "want to play games on it". Surely that's always a more motivating factor than any sense of brand loyalty.
I think the number of people who genuinely deprive themselves of games they want to play in order to try and prove a wider point is actually fairly small.
Rather upsetting news, but nothing that upsets me too much.
I still have a large backlog to go through. There are still plenty interesting Wii U games (to me, anyway) in the coming months I want to grab. This likely means the NX won't be launching too soon, so that's good. It also means (maybe) that the NX will continue with a GamePad, so that's another plus for me.
I am upset I won't be playing Zelda U this year (or perhaps at all), but at the same time, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my time with the Wii U and that this one game delay warrants dropping Nintendo or even selling my system.
And while the delay to release them simultaneously is upsetting, I'll take that over getting a "remastered" version of a three month old game like the PS4 and One's library was full of (if not the libraries' entirety) for the first several months.
Hell, I was just talking about a backlog to go through... I just bought the second Nintendo Humble Bundle yesterday.
Personally, I'm more offended that other big titles I was interested in for my PS4 last E3 ended up being episodic releases instead of a single game.
@G0dlike they never said Zelda's coming in March lol
No surprise for me, already knew it was coming. Day 1 NX launch title for me, and this will allow me to catch my games up for the rest of 2016. Sad in one respect, great for me in another.
Nintendo have just revealed the NX's real name - The Nintendo Wii Mii
I'll probably get the Wii U version first since I'll probably get the NX after I get my taxes back
I am ok with it. Just make it the best Zelda!
I'm surprised this is even news. It seemed so obvious I thought it was just common knowledge.
Can't say I didn't expect this, but I'm not too bothered by it. I have plenty of unplayed Zelda titles in my backlog and can stand to wait longer. I'd rather a game be delayed when not ready instead of being released in a half-broken state.
At least we sort of know when the NX
At least we sort of know when the NX
is going to be released
The only thing I am sure at the moment is what version I am going to get, and it's not NX. I am going to buy the Zelda disc, for my "old" Wii U. NeXt console can wait a few years and show me how it performs.
So I can deal with NX not making holiday 2016. That's fine. I would rather Nintendo have a good launch lineup with good software to buy when the new system launches. This whole Zelda being delayed till 2017 to coincide with the launch of NX? Well that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Screw you Nintendo. I'm not going to continue to give you my money when you make the same plays over and over again. People who bought your WiiU with the intent to be playing a new Zelda game shouldn't be continually screwed because you want the game to be a launch title for your new system....you did the same thing with Twilight Princess on GameCube. You realize the people who buy your hardware/software are the ones that keep you alive right? Well Wii U owners have continuously gotten the shaft. We have been patient. We have made due with remakes of games we have already played and promises for too long. Enough is enough. This time I'm voting with my wallet and not making the same mistake again. At least one of us can learn from our past then .
Sincerely,
An Enraged Zelda fan.
Ask I know is Nintendo is repeating history... This could be bad. Hopefully not.
I would love if Nintendo brings out the Nintendo entertainment system.
A next gen back to basics gaming machine. Lol. Like xbone or ps4.
I've gotta say I am a little disappointed with Nintendo here not that the NX is coming out in 2017 would prefer this year tho but that Zelda U is being pushed back so it can be released at the same time not cool the Wii U version should have been coming out this year for sure bad call by Nintendo.
I think we all need to forget about the NX for a while.
Right now, I'm not sure this matters to me anymore. Too much horse crap, too many failures, and far too little done for those who have kept Nintendo afloat. Hell, NOA has been all but ignoring this region's fans and supporters as others regions were constantly acknowledged and thrown bones. I called spring 2017 while at the same time hoping I was wrong... but at the time the NX became a thing in the news, it just made sense. And I knew that the Zelda game would be on both systems again. I just hoped it would release this year on the Wii U and later on NX as remastered extra content version. Instead, Nintendo has managed to alienate many with an incredibly douchey move. There have been so many bad moves this generation, and the theft that SNES and other VC game pricing represents is just a ridiculous, and foul slap in the face for people who have already shelled out cash for several other versions of the same damn game. There was no attempt to offers those who had already purchased these games on the VC any sort of discount, and that's just one greedy step too far for me. Add to that moving key IPs to mobile, and while I'm not 100% sure at this very moment, I think I'm done giving Nintendo my money... at least for a very long while. They have become something I really don't recognize any more. They are recycling leeches who no longer even pretend to value their fans and supporters, without whom they would have ceased to exist a while ago and wouldn't have been able to weather all of their mistakes and bad marketing.
The PS4 looks like the new horizon for me for now. That right there represents my former NX budget. Great games, amazing jrpgs, decently powered hardware, a great interface and OS and UX. I have my 'New' 3DSXL for the occasional Nintendo fix, if I still feel like I can give them any of my money. I have more than enough Nintendo games to fill that void; easily 100s across all of their systems. I don't think they need any more of my money for a while, and they sure haven't acted like they really want me or anyone who has been with them through every system to hang around. This isn't internet rage, it's just someone who has been through all of this before (only this time it's worse) and is just tired of it. It's my hobby and it shouldn't be this annoying. Given all of the systems I have, part of me just wants to flip Nintendo off, take a break from spending money - period - and go work on my stacks/pile of shame. That should keep me busy long enough for Nintendo to figure out if they really want to be a video game company any more.
Who knows. Maybe I just need time to digest and play some games. But for me, this is just stupid and annoying and a really crap move.
So yeah. Rant/venting over I guess.
I would be so upset about this... If I hadn't bought a PS4 a few months back. Thankfully I've got plenty to keep me busy while Nintendo gets their act together.
It's funny to think that The Last Guardian is likely to release before Zelda U does.
This is beginning to sound like vaporware or a case of development hell.
Zelda better be a Damn masterpiece with all these development time and Nintendo's best teams working on it.
@manu0 true, but I mean, come on Nintendo, it's my 30th!! And haven't I waited long enough?
Also, it's sad that the Wii U will never have its own Zelda title 😢
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ6kOvO1SUE
Soooo, Zelda Maker for the 30th? If E3 is going to be zelda all the time I feel like they are going to sneak in some smaller games for the anniversary.
Legend of Zelda: the Phantom game.
So... can we stop calling it Zelda U now and start calling it Zelda NX?
Where do I even start... If this was excusable before to delay this game it isn't now. Like Mighty No.9, don't tell your customers that "Oh, it's coming out on X period of time! No, It's coming out on Y period of time... No...It's coming out on Z period of time." It's like, "Enough with the excuses!" Just tell us when you're absolutely 100% sure of a release date then announce it. It's really not hard.
This is incredible! I've never seen a console (In my life time.) that has FAILED this hard. It's quite appalling! Also, please don't give me that useless quote from Miyamoto of him saying: "A delayed game is a good game and a bad game will be bad forever" Or however it goes. Listen, if the delay is a two year stretch (In an era of patches.) then there's a problem.
I feel like there isn't much to say anymore. Normally I would had a rightful visceral reaction to this but I didn't... I think it's because I've become so accustomed to Nintendo's constant B.S that it doesn't faze me anymore. Not to mention their games feel like they've dropped in quality these passed several years.
I hope Nintendo announces something soon to rectify this ball busting move. Outside of that Tokyo Mirage Session game coming out this coming June (Which WILL tank. Mark my words.) I literally don't know of any other games coming out for this system... Seriously, I can't think of one. I actually challenge any who read this to tell me any games that are coming out to the Wii U. (And even 3DS. I don't see much there either.) And to hear that Zelda U will be the ONLY game playable at E3 is painting an amazingly grim picture for their upcoming conference.
Nintendo has to do something about this... Like give us something free to rectify this. Or some kind of massive discount on something. Just respond to this to combat this crappy news. I seriously doubt anyone's going to defend this delay. And if there is, then they're probably a delusional white knight fanboy who's opinion shouldn't be taken seriously. Ever.
I don't know if there's much more to say... I'm sure there is but I honestly feel like I'm kicking a dead horse. I truly pity those who bought a Wii U. (At full price too.) If there's any silver lining in all of this, I think those who bought a Wii U will now have a healthy level of skepticism towards the NX. I think people won't jump in the wagon and buy it day one. They'll look at the games and conclude "Yeah, I want this." Which is the healthy way to go when purchasing anything really.
Well... In conclusion, I do want this game to succeed. The pre-release hype is now dead and buried unfortunately and they're not going to turn that around. Hopefully the game will "Kick a** and take names."... When ever it comes out...
I'm done with Nintendo. And video games in general. I'll be 30 this year and the Wii U was complete doggy doodoo. Goodbye. ...unless they release a next gen portable I might but if doesn't surpass my expectations. I'll really be finished with them. Ugh!
I wish I could sue Nintendo. The only reason I got one is because I played Rayman legends and heard it was releasing a week later feb 2013 then it got delayed 8 months then games that promised to release on Wii U that Nintendo showed in a sizzle reel in an official Nintendo direct never came. Project cars I'm looking at you. No third party support I'm looking at you. But Nintendo! Especially NOA I'm mad dogging you right now.
I'm over it. They suck now. It hurts to say it but they got NOTHING!
@Kicked2TheKirb - please consider the community rules and avoid the profanity. Thanks muchly
You know how people say, "Nintendo is Doooomed!!!"
Well I'm starting to think they might be. Zelda U. Only game playable at e3 then it releases at least 8 months later?!!!
People have been waiting 2 of 3 years for this game. Wtf?!
This was a bad decision to make for consumer trust.
It's official, I am getting it for my Wii U, as a farewell to Nintendo consoles. Since that will be the last I will ever buy.
I truly hope they become a software company after NX fails.
Ah... after a wonderful Direct, too. Nintendo, you don't know how to keep your fans happy, do you?
There goes my christmas game. I'll make a point and get it on Wii U, like how I got Twilight Princess for Gamecube.
I'm very happy with this and the NX's delay. It'll give me time to save for the NX after Christmas, and with the new Zelda as a launch title the NX is sure to make a much bigger impact than the Wii U did at launch. Dibs on the bundle.
how is this a surprise? literally everyone and their mom knew Nintendo was pushing back Zelda Wii U to also make a Zelda NX. Nintendo did so with Twilight Princess so it's not like its unheard of.
@Yorumi
That's true. oh well. Maybe it means we'll get a couple of remasters and/or localizations to make up for waiting.
I have my fingers crossed for Style Savvy 3 and a remaster of Eternal Darkness. (^_^ )
Oh well. No surprise. WiiU preorder cancelled. This was the last WiiU game I had on preorder.
With the launch month on the NX announced that's the nail in the coffin for the WiiU so no more game purchases for me.
Not sure I'll even get the NX as I took the gamble with preorder of the WiiU and had it on day one.
Until I know more about the NX and guarantees from publishers on who is and isn't going to publish on it, I'll keep my money in my pocket.. Once bitten twice shy..
2006 all over again. Hopefully the NX version will not be an obvious, feature-tacked-on port of the Wii U original, like Twilight Princess on Wii was. At least they're not canning the Wii U this year, as predicted.
So there we have it, Nx is a replacement for Wiiu.
Well, it's nice to hear the game will be coming out, but this is easily the most frustrating generation of gaming that I've gone through. It's going to take something really impressive (along the lines of an E3 that meets rabid fan expectations) to get me on board with the NX. This has certainly been a disappointing, frustrating generation.
As long as it comes to Wii U, that is the important thing. If I've been waiting this long and suddenly I won't be able to play it, it won't make me buy an NX, it will make me swear off Nintendo forever.
@Yorumi Yeah.. I was innocent enough to believe it could be.
Now the only thing they could do to to totally destroy my appreciation for Nin is that those pretty ZeldaU things we saw are really just Nx's. Wiiu being neglected over Nx and duller looking,
Everyone I know are getting bad vibs for that LoZ.. and I'm starting to believe it. Pretty much all N. wiiu games so far are underwhewing, rushed or bareboned..
I've been a non-account nintendolife reader for 2 years. I made an account so that I can comment. I am sad to hear about another delay and the NX priority. I have had the game pre-ordered for months. I cancelled my pre-order because I think the Wii U is nearing the end of it's life, time to sell of my Wii U games and prepare for the NX--I'll wait a year or so to get it to make sure it isn't doing poorly like the Wii U did though.
@Yorumi ...that we know of (it's possible they might be holding out on a few lesser announcements for it this year). Most significantly, that it will be Nintendo's only home console in 2016 ensures they won't cannibalize their sales of Wii U games for this year, despite that they'll probably sell relatively few games for it for the rest of year, anyway (though many fewer still, were they to release the NX in 2016).
We all knew it. Still a poke in the eye of every Wii U owner. The NX is going to have to be something tremendous for me to still be a Nintendo fan by 2017.
They did it again.
Seeing so many angry reactions such as the one written down by @Demoneye223 made me realize one thing: @Pachterkid was partially right. Let me state that once more - Pachterkid was partially right.
You know what I would normally stand back and shake my head like a disapproving parent at all the internet rage in the comments. But this time I really think its well founded. Nintendo has really struggled this gen, not just with Zelda but with games in general. And yet it seems they care little about changing that outlook for themselves. I know some people who bought a Wii U purely for Zelda U and after two years it turns out it was a waste of money for them. I for one am very annoyed that I could have sold my Wii U at least a year ago as aside from maybe two games (Xenoblade chronicles X and Bayonetta 2) the thing has slowly been gathering dust. Just what the heck are they playing at? The NX news is encouraging to know they will release next spring as I think it will be a ripe time to soak up all the attention after the ps vr and 4k releases. But again, not showing anything at E3 is just a bonkers move that makes little sense to me. I really am coming to the end of my relationship with Nintendo I think, and as stated, unless this NX is some kind of power house monster of a machine I believe many more will jump ship too. Leaving Nintendo to become just like Sega did. And unless anything changes, I won't be sorry and the fate will be thoroughly deserved.
@Marshi I picked Wii U over Wii mainly due to Super Mario 3D World but I agree with you that the number of AAA titles is not big on the Wii U (not including AAA Wii games.) I like Nintendo over Sony mainly due to higher numbers of kid-friendly and workout games. I even saved Gamestop trade in credits for the Zelda U so the delay surely is very disappointing. I hope though they would give some discounts at least on Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD during the holidays. Wii U is my first home console purchase but I regret to say that my next home console may be a Playstation. I believe the kids would still be happy with a PS4 and the Kingdom Hearts series instead of Zelda...
I'll wait to see the NX controller before I choose which version I will be getting. As with Twilight Princess, Gamecube controller beats wiimote + nunchuck every time.
Also with Twilight Princess, gamepad is awesome for a zelda title, so bring it on.
@Marshi I'm starting to feel the same way. I've been a Nintendo fanboy since I was just a little boy in the 80's and I love them to death, but I am really scratching my head right now. I'm optimistic about the NX, but it better deliver. It better be a powerhouse console that can easily support all 3rd party games. Even if I got a PS4 though, I think I would still need an NX in my home simply because of Mario Kart and Splatoon. I don't think I can live without MK 9 and Splatoon 2. Not to mention Smash Bros and Zelda...
@Gauchorino Part of me is happy the Wii U has at least another year left, but honestly, is there really even a point? What else besides for Zelda is coming to it? DLC for Smash and Mario Kart is done, and mostly done for Splatoon now. Maybe Nintendo has some surprises, but it seems like all their development teams are working on NX games now.
@vio I still believe that Nintendo will benefit more from having only one home console on the market at a time. It will allow some of their upcoming releases for Wii U to breathe a little and give the company some time to perfect whatever shortcomings the NX and its planned marketing may be suffering from.
Frankly, I'm not looking forward to the new system much at all, myself, due to the cheapened feels their integrated mobile and rewards efforts are giving off, but maybe Nintendo will try harder to please everyone this time around (like with the Wii), rather than trying to regain most hardcore gamers and failing at it again.
@pandarino
It's strange how many people like the gamecube version more. Personally I liked the wii controls way more! I think as long as there is a decent graphical difference between the two then I will definitely go for NX. Whereas the wii and gamecube were only a step up from each other, the wii u and NX may possibly be a very big difference.
@View92612
Ps4 is a decent console (better than xbone anyway) but it is definitely not kid friendly. You will struggle to find a good amount of games under 15 rated. The most annoying thing about it is its lack of being able to play psone and ps2 classics.(although they slowly are starting to bring ps2 reboots) You can't play ps3 games either (besides using playstation streaming service) so your library is very limited in that area. Ratchet and clank Is awesome though I will have to say that lol. But do some research before buying it as a console for kids
@starman292 yes, I get what they were trying to do with the motion controls but I found out that I have much more fun without the motion controls because it is Zelda...my body just remembers how it plays and I get really immersed in it.
@pandarino
Yeah I guess everyone is different! Either way it's an awesome game. I just found myself missing the motion/pointer controls at certain points of tpHD. I think I literally put so much time into the wii version that the control scheme just felt natural for me.
Its not serious company . all rumors delays it not real ppl are wait desperately for this game 2-3 years. and it seem that witcher 3 is a lot better because at the time when zelda come there will be at least 10 big open world games for XBOX1 or PS4 which will be not for kids.
@starman292 Thanks a lot for the advice. I double checked at ESRB and indeed most Kingdom Hearts games are on PS2 and PS3. Actually the kids are enjoying Kingdom Hearts on Android now. I might as well just keep Wii U and let them play KH on Android. They also still enjoy Skyward Sword a lot. Disney games tend to fairly safe in terms of being kid friendly...I have almost every one of them on Wii/Wii U
Hopefully this won't be a case of Twilight Princess where the NX version is kind of half baked because it was intended to use the Wii U hardware (assuming the controls are wildly different) and they spend the entire consoles lifespan trying to develop a version designed to make the most of the NX features (Skyward Sword).
But that's my greatest fear. Do I buy it on the Wii U like it was originally designed (but possibly lacking unique features that totally change how it's played) or opt for the NX version like most people will be playing which could be, as I said, not quite a "full" next gen game seeing as it was developed for current gen? I really wish Nintendo wouldn't do this to us.
@Demoneye223 I'm 100% with you
If I'm not playing the new Zelda on my WiiU by the end of this year I'll never buy any more Nintendo games let alone NX or whatever they release.
I bought the wiiU for Zelda and I've been supporting the games that have been released in the meantime. I own around 400 Nintendo games starting sinse the NES. 30 of those are for the WiiU and Starfox Zero will be last time i gave any more money to Nintendo unless they offer me Zelda before the end of this year
I will get the Wii U version of this game anyway, and won't buy a NX on launch.
@ColdingLight to take on your challenge, its not a title I want myself but Mario and Sonic Rio olympic games comes out for Wii U 24th June.
@vio the wiiu doesnt have another year, there's one game that lots of people are waiting to be released on it, it is called Zelda U that is being deleayed hoping to push sales of the new NX
What we have is another year of no wiiu games.
What Nintendo needs to do is release Zelda on wiU this year as promised and then get on with the next gen. Instead they are screwing us not releasing the game that is probably ready so it can be on NX hoping people to get it on the new console.
Well not me, I surely would have upgraded to NX early but no more lies.
The NX will be the last Nintendo failure before they died
I'm not surprised. Didn't i say earlier i wouldn't be even surprised if they would've skipped the WII U version . If they wanted i'm sure they could've released this year, but better to give 2 version so you will go at the end for the better version. I wonder how much better it will be with a stronger hardware.... we will see
