Update: The game is now available to download from the eShop.
At Bethesda's 2018 E3 press conference, Todd Howard announced the award-winning free-to-play mobile game, Fallout Shelter, would be coming to the Nintendo Switch later today.
The release on console devices marks the three year anniversary of the title. Fallout Shelter is a simulation game where players strive to build and manage their very own vault. More than 120 million people have downloaded the mobile version of the game. According to Howard, it's managed to outpace the combined efforts of Bethesda's other releases.
Are you looking forward to this game's arrival on the Switch eShop later today? Tell us in the comments.

Was asking for a Fallout 4 port, got a Fallout freemium mobile port instead. Why Bethesda do you betray me like this?
They said 120 million people have played this game?
That's... incomprehensible. Game is insanely popular. Perfect primer for a New Vegas release on Switch later.
Awesome!
Not the Fallout we wanted...
I’ll give it a go
Not the Fallout I wanted........
Well, the price point definitely seems spot-on at least.
Early signs of E3 are underwhelming
There must be some other Fallout announcement at the Nintendo Direct then, right?
@icebear80
I sure hope so
If I cared to play this I would have 3 years ago on my phone. E3 is looking like a bust unless everything is in the Direct.
It seems a bit obnoxious that PSVR got a real Fallout, while Switch gets the freemium mobile game.
Bethesda's continued support is mobile games!
FIFA 19, a remaster of a 10 year old well loved JRPG, and two mobile games.
E3 is going greeeeeat.
Well, I might as well try it. Never played a Fallout game before in my life.
I wonder what engine RAGE 2 is running on . . . . . .
@Knuckles-Fajita You act like those will for sure be the only other games they bring.
And people thought Slig was the negative one...
I'm definitely wanting it
There must be a Fallout 3, 4 or New Vegas port announced in the Nintendo Direct surely ? why else bring this to Switch ???
@IceClimbers Well they did tease Elder Scrolls Blades so there is that...
But no, I expected at least...something? You know, Fallout 3, Dishonored maybe. Another game to sit alongside Wolfenstein 2. So unless Nintendo wants some padding, I think we should sit pretty until the Direct regarding any Switch announcements.
Of course, I also believe that we need to base expectations based on what we know, not rumours and wishes, so as far as I care, their future Switch support is all mobile games. That is what they have showed.
Doom was announced for the Switch 2 months before it was released. Not all hope is lost, the Switch will not become a wasteland suddenly.
Oy vey sigh
... Another mobile port.
I'll try it out. Looks interesting.
Sure this game isn't at all what people were expecting/hoping for but I have put quite a few hours into this game on Xbox One and it is by no means a bad game, it can get quite addictive actually and it being portable will only enhance that, don't knock it until you have tried it.
I hope they are keeping the Fallout 4 port for the Nintendo direct.
If the Switch gets only this it is embarrassing.
Hoping this paves the way for a real announcement. The Switch is not a phone.
Nice but I already own this on my Shield K1 Tablet. I actually got my wife into this game on her tablet.
@Zuljaras yeah. I'd definitely buy Fallout 4 for the Switch even though I own it on my PC.
I want that West Virginia Fallout.
Awesome news its great that Switch is getting this support , we are going from coming to PS4 and XBOX1 to coming to PS4 and SWITCH. which is fantastic for Nintendo fans .
LOL.
@Tsurii It does look pretty good for a mobile title. I don't have many games on my Switch that I care to play out of the dock, so this will be a nice little addition.
I know Bethesda is going to announce a Fallout game for the Switch. I just hope it was not this one.
Yay.
A mobile port.
Yay.
I might finally give it a try.
@JaxonH God I would be pumped for New Vegas on Switch.
I guess I will give this a chance, at least see what it is like. It's free to try out at least.
@Heavyarms55
I've heard nothing but great stuff about Fallout Shelters. It was apparently Xbox One exclusive until now.
I know few people who have put a crazy number of hours into it.
And this is a perfect way to get people ready for a New Vegas or Fallout 4 port (I'm thinking New Vegas will come, simply because FO4 has trouble running on the GPD Win 2 without a downgrade mod, while DOOM runs on par with Switch).
I'd definitely give this a go. I have yet to meet someone who didn't like this game who tried it.
Wasn't everyone salivating over Death Road? Why assume that because this is on mobile it sucks? That line is blurry these days anyway. Mobile games like Oceanhorn make solid ports to Steam and consoles. PC games like FTL and Banner Saga have seamless transitions to mobile. Also, when this game launched it was as a marketing tool for the Fallout 4 reveal. So let's at least wait for the Direct before crying.
@JaxonH Well I personally loved New Vegas but was bored with FO4 so I'd be totally okay with a New Vegas port. As for this game, like I said, I will try it.
The game was okay but once every thing was unlocked I lost interest.
They showed and mentioned the Switch multiple times so fingers crossed for the direct and more/better support.
Time to play Shelter untill 76 release in November for PC.
Cool, I guess.
No Fallout 3 Remaster??
This company is amazing.
Hmm...so reading the description when I went and started downloading this from the eShop...its something akin to Oxygen Not Included? A base building/management style game, where you have to build and keep your dwellers happy while expanding your base? If so...I could be in trouble...because I can become hopelessly addicted to these kind of time-wasters. lol
@Toadie Because it is the 3rd year anniversary of Fallout Shelter, and they decided to celebrate the game's success over the years by porting it to PS4 and Switch. That's why.
Also, on the topic of potential Fallout ports, I don't think they would bring Vegas or 3 over, if anything they would have 4 I'm guessing, but even that is a bit of a long shot. I'm completely opened to being surprised though by Bethesda.
I don't mind quality mobile games at all. Hopefully this is a primer for Fallout 3, NV and possibly 4 on Switch.
@gatorboi352 Of course you are.
There has to be another Fallout release coming or this would make no sense.
Great!
@Knuckles-Fajita They didn't announce platforms for most titles, right? It would make sense to expect Wolfenstein Young Blood and Doom to come to the Switch. I also don't think Bethesda would announce a port of an old game like Fallout 4 in their conference. Don't have any idea if it will come to the Switch, though.
So far, not a great E3 for Nintendo fans.
@tourjeff
Wave race switch 👍
@Romeo-75
It's already out on ☓box 1
Not interested. I haven’t played it on my phone, not going to do it on my Switch either.
Granted, they haven’t announced platforms on almost any game so there’s that blind hope there... but....
Disappointed to say the least.
@OdnetninAges Fallout Shelter is not a Fallout game. It's a room building, resource management mobile game with optional lootboxes. As mobile games go its ok.
@JaxonH I thought the exact same thing 😊
So far 3rd party support for the Switch can be resumed to FIFA 19 that’s one heck of a sad story! I really was hoping for some surprise from bethesda oh well!
@retro_player_22
I think we should wait for the direct to make judgement... No I don't think we are getting Fallout 76 on switch but 3 or (unlikely) 4 Port. Bethesda and Nintendo seem to be getting along together.
@BanjoPickles wait... which Fallout game is coming to PSVR? I didn’t see a Fallout 4 VR announcement for it.
Fairly confident this means another Fallout announcement is imminent!
I think this means that a Fallout will be coming, it’s just that Nintendo need to announce it themselves. Remember Dark Souls? We had to wait for Nintendo to announce it themselves.
@BensonUii Nobody likes a sycophant, dude. The only games (and you sully the word) Bethesda announced for Switch are mobile ports. While there was a hint of sarcasm to my comment, the Switch might as well be a phone if it's essentially receiving mobile apps and nothing else.
@Knuckles-Fajita,
Once again the internet forums vocal minorities speak out,wishing that Nintendo would have a console competing directly with Sony and Microsoft...totally ignoring the fact that when they did they failed..and at best they would get an equal share in a 160 million or so userbase,even with the 3DS and Wii U Nintendo would have sold around 80 million consoles which is far more than they could hope for in the red ocean.
Nintendo will always be going their own way as their online structure does not support most of the modern AAA games,and their consoles power would not show it off to the best effect either..love it or hate it these third party games will only sell small numbers compared to Nintendo's own software.
For the 18 million or so Switch users...and there will be more by now...the consoles 700 or so games will be doing the job just fine..as much as we on here hate to admit it we are not reflective of the mass market or even the biggest portion of Ps4/Xbox One users,who never would even consider posting on online forums.
The Mobile market is the only games market that is expanding..unless of course Nintendo manage to pull a DS/Wii type of success from the Switch,even then it's tiny compared to mobile devices.
Yeaaaaahhh, top-shelf gaming!
Yay, more games I didn't bother to download to my Android device
I'll assume that they are saving the Bethesda ports for the Nintendo Direct
If they are getting big games, they are probably showing them off in the Nintendo Direct.
The Switch already having to be content with mobile game cast offs.
Let’s wait with whining until E3 is done
They can't be bothered to port Fallout to Switch is it?
i understand people are dissapointed, but we have to wait and see, what betheseda is has to announce further on.
Fallout shelter is a very very good game, always a warm welcome to the nintendo switch library.
i've played it for hours and hours, it's very addictive well worth your money.
bethesda supports the switch, so dont worry about their games. it just takes time to finetune it for this platform since its a dedicated system, wich we should be thankfull for. you don't want to play ported crap . these things always bothered me with the xbox one. always have to compare with the ps4. this machine is unique.
I only came here to see the fallout from this spectacular announcement. Tomorrow could be interesting.
@Mgene15 Don't even tell me!
I've been waiting for a new Wave Race for a long time!
Wouldn't be bad to have a 1080 and Pilotwings too
Why would they release to free-to-play mobile ports on a platform if they weren't to get people interested in their respective franchises?
There will be at least an anouncement regarding Fallout. Otherwise this marketing strategy would make absolutely stupid.
I don't get why people complain already about the lack of announcements when the direct is tomorrow and usually that has always been the main platform for announcements. I take the games we get to know about from other sources as a nice bonus.
MAinline Fallout confirmed for switch, there is no way they would release the mob game and not the full game to go with, th eonly question is which Fallout will Nintendo reveal?!? I want tuesday supper time and ah wunt it nooo!
@BensonUii I was just expressing disappointment. Let's cross our fingers Bethesda actually has something substantial in store for the Switch, anyway.
I hope this means that the sales numbers for this game will determine whether or not we’ll be getting Fallout 4... in that case I’ll be downloading it to show my support.
@Ubik You have a very interesting way of "confirming" a game.
@Whalehome PSVR isn't getting Fallout 4 VR, only PC has it with HTC Vive.
@JaxonH It was never xbox exclusive. It was on mobile and PC for ages before Xbox got it.
@Romeo-75 It's "coming to ps4 and switch" because it's been out on mobile, PC and Xbox for years already.
@BanjoPickles PSVR does not have Fallout 4. Only PC with HTC Vive does.
@WhiteTrashGuy It's running on Avalanche's Apex engine (the just cause engine)
I mean... great, I guess. We got a Fallout game on Switch. I was kinda hoping for 3 or New Vegas, though.
Nintendo to win E3!
@Menchi187
???
Of course it was. But we're talking about consoles here, and as far as consoles go... it was Xbox exclusive. For some time in fact.
@WiltonRoots best Monday morning ever, multiple meltdowns after literally only two conferences. I can't imagine what tomorrow will be like
@Whalehome
Fallout 4 has been on PSVR for months.
@Menchi187
I stand corrected. I could have swore it was.
@Whalehome
Actually, I was wrong. I could have swore that it was on PSVR.
I'm ok with this. I downloaded it before i jumped in the shower for work this morning. I also think this is a way for Bethesda to see franchise interest from Switch owners by a hard number basis. X number of downloads for a series entry is alot easier to extrapolate to potential sales for a different entry when selling executives on a decision. Anyone working in an office setting definitely gets what I'm saying there.
Either way, free game!
I hope this is just an appetizer until the actual Fallout arrives... if not, this would be very disappointing. This is the type of game suitable for that Anti-Matter guy.
@johnvboy It's not that Nintendo couldn't compete having more powerful hardware, it was the fact that they were 2 years late to the party after the the failed collaboration with Sony. By the time N64 released, Sony had already swallowed the market whole. It also didn't help that Nintendo was still using cartilages which made it difficult for 3rd party developers to make games for the N64. The GameCube had suffered the same fate being almost 2 years late to market without much 3rd party support. Many people thought of it as a Fisher-Price toy, which is basically what gave Nintendo the kiddy image that they have not been able to shake off even today.
Having never played this yet on smartphones I’m kind of excited. KIND OF. I’ll be happy if there is a way to beat it and not have this game just farm money out of my pocket. Which by the way, I have ZERO intention to spend even a nickel.
This is fine, but I want real games too. Bethesda didn't say much about what real games are going on what consoles. These types of games are not the future I want for Switch, but it's ok in moderation. In other words, if a Fallout game doesn't come to Switch, this isn't going to cut it.
Why is everyone disappointed in e3 so far? Nintendo doesn’t go until Tuesday right? As we all know it’s a first party console. The third party is like icing on the cake.
@BanjoPickles Just Skyrim I was really hoping for PSVR fallout 4 announcement, but it could still happen at Sony's conference. I want a real game to play on my PSVR, and I had already just bought another version of Skyrim for my switch and wasn't ready for the triple dip on PSVR Skyrim.
I had this on my phone for a while. Got bored with it after a few weeks.
@dougphisig
I was desperately hoping for Fallout 3, New Vegas, or even Fallout 4 on Switch. It just seemed like that thing that was bound to happen. I'm honestly astonished/irked that it didn't.
I've heard people say "relax, it could still be announced during the Direct." Now, why would they save such an announcement for the Direct when Bethesda had an hour and a half? Besides, I thought that the purpose of these conferences was to announce games in development for the different consoles. I'm sure that there will be some third party announcements during the Direct (God, I hope so), but I doubt that any of the Fallouts will be a part of the roster. It wouldn't really make sense anyway. With the announcement of Fallout 76, I don't see them competing with themselves by remastering Fallout 3, and I highly doubt that they would create the remastered game exclusively for Switch. It's a drag, but I do think that Shelter will be the only Fallout game on Switch, for the next year (at least).
@BanjoPickles From the reviews, the (PC) VR Fallout 4 was pretty awful....the controls just didn't work right, and VATS isn't a winning combo with VR (who knew). Skyrim VR is leaps better by most accounts. Doom VR also got mixed reception (I have the game but haven't played it yet.)
@dougphisig There's a solid chance it happens at Sony. I haven't played too much of Skyrim VR yet...played an hour or two then didn't get back to it, but I really REALLY wish I could share saves with a 2D version. It's awesome...it's truly awesome....but I can't imagine sitting in the VR helmet for 900 hours of play. I want to play the game in 2D, and then be able to explore specific places in 3D space rather than play the minutia of the entire game and inventory management in VR (which isn't all that pleasant.) Best VR game in so many ways....but also the wrong one. Too long, big, with too much text for so much time consumption in the helment. Cross saves through BethesdaNet would have made it amazing.
@BanjoPickles To be fair, Wolfenstein wasn't announced for Switch at last E3 with the other versions either....so it doesn't mean hope is lost, but it also doesn't mean it will happen.
@NEStalgia
Very true. Fingers crossed! It just seems like it would be a missed opportunity for them to not do it. Then again, I thought the same thing about Virtual Console, and look what happened there.
Will give this a try since it's free. But I would have preferred some kind of announcement that Fallout 76 would arrive on Switch (with a caveat maybe that it has to be played with a wifi connection, but still runs in handheld mode or docked!
@Menchi187
Darn! I was hoping id Tech 6... Then it would be an easy port. I would really like an open world game on the system with awesome vehicles.
@lifepsychedelic Ah ok. I know it was only listed for Vive on the product page and I wasn't gonna spend €60 to try it on my Rift since it wasn't officially supported.
@Ubik
The dude abides
I'll pass on this one. I simply don't support the freemium model. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I rather pay for a full game than one that is designed to try and have you buy chests of smurfberries.
To each their own, but I'm not happy we are starting to see this model on the Switch.
Downloaded it and was kind of looking forward to play it due to the hype some years ago. After only 1 hour i realized maybe its bot my type of game, getting no progress. I also might feel i would be happy with a real fallout game and paying for it.
Cool, but i want an FPS Fallout as well.
3 - 4 - New Vegas
Never played this on mobile so I downloaded it. It's not too bad. My daughter seems to be enjoying it quite a bit.
@JTMnM
well.. it kinda is really......
Well... I won’t cry about not seeing FO76 but I was hoping for FO4... This?...
@james_squared I'm having fun with it too! It's actually not as bad as people are making it out to be. It is confusing at first, but eventually you get the hang of everything. So glad they got it on Switch. Been trying to find reasons to use the thing! Haha.
