Finally got back into Octopath Traveler II after being distracred by other gsmes the past few months.

It's definitely got better pacing than the first one, and the individual stories feel a lot more interesting and less formulaic. I'm curious to see how things will play out in the late game since it looks like the characters might not all have the same number of chapters. Also I still haven't found like half the guild locations but I don't really want to look it up.... sigh

Recently started Persona 5 Royal and Ori and the Blind Forest.

Persona 5 is very interesting so far but I have to admit that I can't always stick to playing it for over an hour at a time. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think maybe I'll enjoy it more if I let myself take it in slowly. There's just so many tutorials and dialogue and so little combat that even though I'm really curious about the story, my mind starts to wander off after a certain point.

Ori and the Blind Forest is interesting so far. So far there's a much bigger focus on storytelling than most metroidvanias that I've played. It has a very strong aesthetic as well. I'm not far enough in to judge much, but I'm definitely liking what I've played so far.

I just finished the Thousand Year Door remake a couple days ago. It was honestly even better than I remembered because I never even knew about Stylish moves or Superguards when I played it on Gamecube. It adds some fun extra wrinkles to the battle system for sure.

I started Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown today and it's SO GOOD so far! I've been really enjoying the gameplay and story. The vibe is very different from Metroid since there is more dialogue and actual human characters, which is cool. I like seeing such a different approach to the same genre. Personally I'd love to see more AAA 2D metroidvanias. Feels like there's a lot of untapped potential there.

I also picked up Carrion this week. Its controls feel a little weird to me, but it kinda works on a meta level because you're playing as this weird creature that doesn't really move like a human would anyway. It kinda makes you feel like a bad person to play the game well, but it's also very satisfying lol.

Just did a quick search to compare Origami King's first few weeks with the Thousand Year Door's so far.
OK launch: 109,092
week 2: 50,643
week 3: 22,773
week 4+5: 20,978 (these weeks were combined in famitsu for some reason)
TYD launch: 115,649
week 2: 34,004
week 3: 19,180

Week 2 was about 16,000 lower than Origami King and week 3 was about 3,500 lower. Without knowing the digital sales numbers, it's hard to know which is higher overall, but the Thousand Year Door has some catching up to do in the next few weeks if it wants to beat the famitsu sales of Origami King. Here's hoping!

I just beat Banjo Kazooie last night. I played the game a lot "back in the day", but never even got close to the ending because of how discouraging it is to reset your note score every time you enter/exit a level. I am not ashamed of heavily abusing the NSO save state function, especially on games like this that I put so much time into without beating.

Personally I prefer Tooie, but there's a lot to like about BK. I hope Banjo Tooie and DK64 both come to NSO soon. DK64 at least should have been on it day 1 in my opinion.

In other news, I'm probably about halfway through Princess Peach Showtime. I've actually enjoyed it a lot, but I do wish they let you skip cinematics when replaying levels. It makes it kind of a drag to go through and get all the stars you missed the first time.

Randomly picked up Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin on sale a week or two ago. What a game! I haven't heard too many people talk about it, but now I understand why those who did spoke so highly of it. It's a great fusion of action platformer with rice growing sim. It's got some interesting characters and setting as well. So far it's been awesome.

I also just got a NSO N64 controller in the mail, so I've been trying to beat Banjo Kazooie. We had this game when I was a kid, but I never played it all the way through. I find it really discouraging to have the note score reset every time you die, so I always just lost interest at that point back then. I'm trying to stick with it till the end this time though, just made it to Click Clock Wood!

I have to own up to an impulse buy this time... I got the Premium edition of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line with all the DLC. It was $60 instead of its usual $100 (USD) so it was a pretty good sale. That's been very fun so far.

I also just started Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4. So far it's been awesome. I only played the original around 2-3 years ago, so I don't have as much nostalgia as others do. But I've been loving it so far.

Just got an 8bitdo pro 2 controller so I've been trying out various games with it just to test it. I started playing Moonlighter again just to see how the D Pad felt, but the game got its hooks in me again. So now I'm making my way through the dungeons again! I did want to eventually replay it though so this works out for me!

Also I might try playing Portal 2 with my brother in law during the christmas break. I played Portal for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it, but I know 2 is supposed to be better with a friend.

Just started Cris Tales this week. Incredible game so far though I'm only an hour or so in. I love the art style and the concepts of time travel are really interesting so far.

Also finished Portal on Monday for the first time. It was super fun! Although I must say the escape sequence at the end definitely overstayed its welcome.

On PS4 I just started Scarlet Nexus and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Both are great in their own ways so far. I'm having a hard time sticking with on game this week.

Still chipping away at Octopath Traveler II. So far so good! The pacing has been better than the original so far, which was my biggest issue with it.

Got a couple random indies on sale today too. Under Leaves, which is a cute little "I Spy" type of game. Cris Tales, which I've had my eye on ever since it came out and I'm excited to try. A Little Golf Journey, which have very chill vibes so far. And Ken Follett's Pillars pf the Earth, which I know nothing about, but I found the art style intriguing enough to try out for $2.

I finally started playing Octopath Traveler II yesterday! I had been wanting to get it ever since it came out but I just couldn't find the time lr the money to get it until now. I'm only an hour or two in so far, but I'm hoping it will be am even better game than the first one.

I also finally got to try out The Mysterious Murasame Castle since it got added to NSO out of nowhere. That was pretty fun although I died A LOT. I think they should reboot the series with a new entry on Switch. It would be so cool!

I finished playing The Messenger this week! It was so good!! I also completed the Picnic Panic expansion, which was short but pretty tough.

Now I'm trying to pick my next game. I want to finish SMT V and FF IX, both of which I had been playing earlier but dropped at some point. I also want to replay Baten Kaitos I since I played II (Origins) first when I picked up the remaster.

Re: Soapbox: What Do You Do When Nintendo Ticks Off Your ENTIRE Most-Wanted List?

My wishes that have already come true:

-Metroid Prime Remastered
-Metroid 5 (Dread)
-Baten Kaitos I and II HD Remaster
-Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door
-N64 and GBA on Switch
-Super Mario Sunshine in HD

Wishes that have yet to come true:

-Ogre Battle 64 remaster (or even just putting it on NSO would be great)
-Metroid Prime 2 & 3 in HD
-Kid Icarus Uprising port (I bounced hard off of the original because the controls hurt my wrist)
-Something new related to Golden Sun
-An original, non-remake 2D Zelda

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 23rd)

mudkipfan217

Baten Kaitos Origins! Just yesterday I got past the point where I always got stuck back in the day, so I'm super excited to see the rest of the story. No spoilers but boy does it get crazy towards the end.

I wasn't able to finish SMT V or the Messenger before the Baten Kaitos remasters came out, but that's okay. Baten Kaitos is one of my all time favorite games, so I'm okay with temporarily putting those two on pause for it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 16th)

mudkipfan217

Baten Kaitos Origins!!! I was so hyped for the remaster because I never finished the prequel back in the day.

Also I started playing the Messenger last week because of all the Sea of Stars hype. (I had it installed on my switch for a while but hadn't gotten around to it.) It's really good! And it has a Québécois translation because the devs are from Québéc. It's pretty funny and makes me nostalgic for the time that I spent living there a few years back

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 9th)

mudkipfan217

I'm hoping to finish Shin Megami Tensei V befofe the Baten Kaitos remaster comes out. I don't know if I'll get quite that far before next Thursday. If not, I'll probably just play Baten Kaitos instead because it's one of my all time faves.

I hope it gets better sales this time around, which shouldn't be too hard since the switch has literally 6x the install base of the gamecube. Fingers crossed!
