Re: Luigi's Mansion 2 HD Has Been Rated For Nintendo Switch

mereel

@Vexx234 I just played through LM3 last week because I was in that kind of mood. I chuckled quite a bit at the suspension of disbelief required to call this hotel a mansion, not to mention the floors contain… let’s see, oceans, deserts full of sand, movie production studios, four-story tall greenhouses, and so on. There is no mansion to speak of. Maybe LM4 will take place in the open world wilderness, with no man-made structures in sight!

Re: TimeSplitters Dev Free Radical Has Shut Down As Staff Share "Last Day" Messages

mereel

This is sad, obviously. The original Free Radical Design was formed from a bunch of Rareware devs that left before the move to Microsoft.

But looking at these group photos, I think many of these folks were in diapers when the last TimeSplitters game was released. I doubt that fans of those games would be pleased by whatever came out of this group. What has the studio done in the past 20 years?

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Three More Titles

mereel

@Ventilator Are you serious? Banjo-Kazooie is already on the NSO service, and the just-released Jet Force Gemini is also a “Microsoft owned IP.”
Perfect Dark and Conker are longshots to come to NSO for numerous reasons, but definitely possible, while Banjo Tooie is simply a matter of time at this point.

Re: Xbox Acknowledges Fan Requests For New Banjo-Kazooie Game

mereel

Guys, here’s the dirty secret. Rare was a shell of their former glory AT THE TIME Nintendo decided to pass on them. Even then Rare would have struggled to make another good Banjo game. Nintendo saw the writing on the wall and wisely passed on the acquisition.

Some things can never return. We still got lots of great Rareware games during the 90s though, and they can’t take that away from us. All I’m asking for is Rare’s entire N64 output to be released on NSO. Come on, Microsoft. Do it for the good of all mankind.

Re: Feature: What Video Game Consultants Actually Do, And Why ‘Kit & Krysta’ Are Doing It

mereel

@samuelvictor Thanks. I’m watching a YouTube “Data Link” video featuring you. Great stories there. I also checked out your IMDb page. Looking forward to your 2024 movie. It sounds really cool.

As for Kit and Krysta, my family really looked forward to each new Nintendo Minute episode. We would watch it together as a family. I really miss it, though I’m glad to hear that Kit and Krysta are moving into new ventures such as this consulting company. Supposedly they’re going to be at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this weekend, so I’ll try to say hello to them.

Re: Nintendo Live 2023: Dates, Everything You Need To Know

mereel

I was at the event yesterday with family. It was better than I expected. It really felt like the old school E3 vibe. Hopefully Nintendo keeps doing these. I’m sure it cost them a ton of money to put it on, so we’ll have to see.
Oh, and Super Mario Bros Wonder was playable, which was definitely a highlight.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Store Your Games Collection?

mereel

I have basically a CD folder but for switch game cartridges. It’s great. See through sleeves so it’s easy to hunt for the right game, but it all zippers shut for easy and safe travel. The cases go on the shelf to impress my friends, naturally.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Pikmin 1+2 On Switch

mereel

@steely_pete @AlexanderDaniels You’re kidding me. I haven’t watched this DF analysis yet but does it go into the dialogue changes you referenced? I’m getting so tired of woke NOA up in Seattle “fixing” things to appease culture activists.
Mario Golf: Super Rush. “Mario hit that one into the rough. Can THEY get it onto the green still.” So we can’t assume Mario’s gender any more, NOA?! This translation team in Seattle are a canker sore on the great Japanese parent company.
Remember, folks. NOA is just a marketing firm and distributor. Nothing more.

Re: 'Quake II Remastered' Rated Ahead Of QuakeCon 2023

mereel

@Zeldork Wasn’t Nightdive Studios recently acquired in order to work full-time on Fortnite or something dumb like that?

Too bad really. I went to a panel with the founder/CEO at a retro game convention. He is genuinely passionate about reviving old classics and making them shine again on modern systems.

Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of Sonic Superstars Are In

mereel

I kind of feel bad for Sega. They can try a million different ideas with Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, but nobody likes any of them unless it’s a throwback to the original formula.

Mario and Zelda, on the other hand, are constantly being reinvented in various ways, and are always hits.

Re: Hands On: Mortal Kombat 1's Stunning Presentation Has Us Anxious About The Switch Port

mereel

MK11 runs smoothly but looks awful and blurry on Switch. Considering how similar MK1 looks to MK11, I think it will be much the same this time around.

There is a different porting house doing the Switch conversion this time around, Saber Interactive. I think they’re responsible for some other impressive Switch ports, however, so maybe this one will fare better than MK11 did.

P.S. Just give us Switch owners MK9. It will run amazingly on Switch and it’s the best modern Mortal Kombat game anyway.

Re: Atari Enters Agreement To Acquire Night Dive Studios

mereel

Nightdive is a great company. I saw a panel presentation by the founder Stephen Kick at last year’s Portland Retro Game Expo. Really cool behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare a retro game like Quake for release in a modern era.

I’m bummed that they’re no longer independent. I can’t see this being a good thing for us.

Re: Metroid Prime Engineer "Let Down" By Exclusion Of Original Credits In Remaster

mereel

I’ll be the contrarian and say that I think the way the credits were handled here makes perfect sense. The original game (and Wii re-release) are quite old. Those teams are explicitly “credited” here. It isn’t difficult to look up their names in the original credits.

But a remaster is a new project, at a new time and with new developers. This is their work, and they are the ones who should receive credit by name. Noting in the credits that their hard work is based on the hard work of the original dev teams doesn’t seem insulting or inappropriate to me.

Re: Round Up: Here's What Switch Online Players Think Of GoldenEye 007 So Far

mereel

@Axecon The praise for this game is not too much. It changed everything for subsequent first-person shooters, even on PC. I suggest you do a google search for the “Goldenera” documentary (you can stream it for free just search it). It will help you appreciate the significance of this game in altering the FPS landscape as well as redefining what a licensed video game could be. The dedication and passion which was poured into Goldeneye’s development by a small team of young, talented and hyper-dedicated devs will never be replicated.
