@antisumo ok respect to you then. To be fair, I do have a Switch n64 controller (lucky I guess?) and that works for Goldeneye like a dream. The game obviously wasn’t designed for only 4 face buttons and two sticks, which making adapting joycon to this particular game not a great experience. Another title is Sin and Punishment. The game is nigh unplayable w/o an N64 controller.
@Axecon @antisumo You two make me sad. The N64 NSO app, like all Nintendo’s prior VC efforts has a very clear mission: to present the original games in their original form. The goal is not to “improve” these old games to satisfy petulant TikTok generation kids who won’t play them for more than 10 minutes anyway.
For gamers of a certain age who lived through this golden era of 3d innovation, these N64 titles are properly understood to be cultural touchstones that play great even today. You don’t have to like playing games that are too old for you, but at least be big enough to try to understand why so many people love them.
They haven’t even lowered the MSRP yet. I’ve bought so many Nintendo consoles over the decades, and the MSRP always drops down to bargain levels as the systems begins to sunset. That point hasn’t even happened yet for the Switch. It seems Nintendo will continue to sell the Switch for at least another 2-3 years.
Nintendo could drop the price of the OLED to $199 at some point in the future and probably sell another 50 million units in a year.
We still have the Wii U hooked up to the TV, and we played this a couple months ago. Truly nothing else like it. A fun game that basically demands 2-3 players.
I picked up the Slain/Valfaris double pack (come on, $3.99 for BOTH games!) and I’m loving them both. The artwork and animations are epic. Tough games though.
I also picked up Gato Roboto. Great little metroid-like title starring a cat in a samus power suit basically. $2 was my sweet spot for that one and it finally got there. Great night for me!
Edit: None of the titles I mentioned were listed in this sale, but they are on sale nonetheless. This just goes to show why maintaining a wishlist on DekuDeals.com is a budget gamer’s best friend.
Feral Interactive is the best port house on the Switch, no contest. I’ve never seen these games before but they remind me of Diablo 3, especially the multiplayer aspects. I’m interested.
For me, this game’s core gameplay is very fun, and supports up to 8 players on the couch, I believe. It doesn’t have the depth of prior entries (and no I’m not just referring to stadiums or roster) and the playfields are only skins.
But taken as an arcade experience, it’s really fun. Worth $30 IMO. Currently $34.99 on amazon w/free shipping. So we’re almost there.
So much hate for this game. No, it doesn’t have the content of Wii Sports Resort. Luckily, that game is still widely available and easy to play! As fun as it was, I only ever got so much playtime with it due to local play only. In other words, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort were party games.
For all its faults, this game is something different. It’s Wii Sports but online. Yes, that is the focus. Online play. And if you accept that, then it’s a great game to pop in every couple weeks to get lost in an hour or so of online gaming against randoms. That part works brilliantly, nearly flawlessly, and it’s a blast.
Just stop thinking of this game as Wii Sports Resort 2, and you can possibly appreciate it for what it is. I would estimate I have 30+ hours into this one, and nearly all of that playtime is online. Not bad. It should have been a $30 game, that I will concede.
I doubt this becomes common. It would set an interesting precedent for nintendo, seeing how there is seemingly no mechanism for removing the game from your eShop account once it’s been purchased. Surely it will get patched up in the coming months. The lesson is to not buy digital content until the reviews are in.
I admit I picked this up hoping Golf would be only the first of many sports added to this game. Now, it feels like this may the the end of the updates. Really too bad. Nevertheless, I am excited to play Golf!
NL hands out too many 9s and 10s these days. Getting a 9 used to mean something.
A 9 score should represent at the very least an example of the best a genre has to offer. This game looks neat, but hardly meets that strict criteria.
Nintendo Life needs to be bolder about declaring many indie games to be what they really are - merely ‘okay’. Hand out more 5s and 6s and try to be honest about a game’s quality relative to its existing peers.
@Silly_G while I completely agree with your sentiment, unfortunately future versions or “reprints” of this game as you call it will not have the DLC included on the cart (and yes I know the DLC is free). Nintendo simply doesn’t follow that model.
If you have any evidence to the contrary please link to it.
Start by softmodding it and loading USBLoaderGX. Then enjoy an epic gaming machine that plays Wii U, Wii, and GameCube games flawlessly and natively (no emulation), all over HDMI. Then buy a USB GameCube controller adapter and secure some authentic GameCube controllers. Enjoy 15 years worth of Nintendo console goodness in one machine.
@ZapNCrap the Apple TV hardware has an accompanying subscription service called Apple Gaming or something like that. It’s primarily focused on indie games but adapted to remove all free-to-play garbage elements from those games.
These are many of the same indie games popular on Switch. But you needed an Xbox controller to play the games. Not any more, which is why this is an important update.
Dang. This guy is really good at copying F-Zero X! Kind of shameless, but legal nonetheless and we all know Nintendo won’t give us any F-Zero so why not I guess.
For those who have been disappointed with F-Zero X since it was released due to poor framerate, this title now is not perfect but MUCH improved. Finally playable in my opinion.
@Kyloctopus Right there with you buddy. But would it have killed them to add the Bluetooth pairing button to the quick-menu on the Home Screen? (The menu that appears when you hold the Home button). Sheesh already.
@Royalblues I suppose it’s not impossible, but more likely with 3rd party stuff not Nintendo’s own titles considering the subscription/licensing model in play here.
I tried to sign up, entered my phone number and was met by a message that ‘this phone number is already in use.’ Uh, it’s MY current phone number. What else am I supposed to do?
@Devann If that video is any indication of the quality you’re bringing to all 55 levels, then you sir are heads and shoulders above the subject of this article, who I assume must be a relative of a staff member at Nintendo Life.
@BloodNinja Haha. I see your point, but I’m in my 40’s I tackled those levels over and over as a kid. There’s a difference between an appropriately scaled level of additional difficulty, and just plain broken-ness “gotcha!” difficulty.
It sucks. I tried it and have played through worlds 1 and 2. I’m not sure what all the hoopla is about. I do appreciate that some of the design elements are intended to mimic Nintendo’s own Mario level sensibilities, but overall these levels suck bad.
I reached one stage on World 2 where Mario turns into a balloon, and the creator expects you to navigate Mario through open space dodging bullet bills, all while inflated as a balloon. It was an awful experience and not at all representative of how Nintendo designs Mario levels. This complaint generally is easy to see in every stage I’ve played so far. Gimmicky elements with no pretense or clue as to why or how to address them.
tl;dr Better than some levels you’ve played, but overall still just another ghetto wasteland of poorly designed platforming.
It hasn’t “happened” until it’s playable on my Switch. When will that “happen” huh?
Edit: I also don’t believe there is confirmation of any online ‘mode’ per se (read: modified ROM), but rather the confirmation from the Nintendo Direct was that this title will benefit from being playable online with friends just like any other NSO title.
This is all very interesting. I’ve met John Vogel at retro video game conferences, and he is introduced as the creator of the Mortal Kombat logo. But to go through this twitter story from Jon Tobias, you’d think that he himself was the creative force behind the logo, and that Vogel merely traced the finished product or something.
So happy to see this renaissance of FPS games which evoke the style of shooter from the old days when FPS shooters were actually fun. Looking forward to this!
