Re: Feature: Farewell, Nintendo Switch - It's Finally Time To Bid Our Old Friend 'Adieu'

inkslinger

@AstroTheGamosian I'm pretty sure there are still confirmed Switch 1 games scheduled for a 2026 release, so it'll definitely be supported for a while yet.

I also suspect a lot of low-spec indie games will develop for the Switch to take advantage of that install base rather than developing exclusively for Switch 2. As long as they are appropriately backwards compatible, it seems the smart thing to do for at least a few more years.

Re: Talking Point: Could Ganondorf Ever Be The Star Of A Zelda Game?

inkslinger

There was a mini thread about something like this on Reddit ages ago, where the proposed character wouldn't necessarily be Ganondorf (at least not as we're used to seeing him), but would be the rare Gerudo male who is trying to rebel against his destiny and becomes a sort of anti-hero as a result. Not sure what the gameplay would look like, but the story has potential.

Re: The Apocalypse Gets Cosy In 'Highwater', Sailing Onto Switch Next Month

@Poodlestargenerica Because it may lack most other RPG elements and therefore isn't one, despite the turn-based combat?

Anyway, looks like an interesting game. Turn-based combat seems like a weird choice based on the looks of the rest of the game, but I enjoy me some turn-based combat and this looks more tactical than most, which is a fun twist for a game not billing itself as a tactical RPG.

Re: Review: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, And 2024's First Must-Play

@Eagly_lmtd_xmasskin This is the thing, right? Ubisoft has trained consumers to never pay full price for their games, so maybe they should just factor that in to their metrics when determining if a game is a success or not. If it's a bit of a flop at launch but then sells incredibly well when it does go on sale, maybe that's actually a success story and they should treat it as such.

I had a chance to play a the demo for a little bit over lunch and it is really quite great. I have a solid backlog and Ubisoft is notorious for frequent sales — sometimes even just a few weeks after launch — so I'll probably wait and pick it up later, but it's definitely going on my wishlist for eventual purchase.

I think even full price is reasonable, all things considered. When you look at games like Mario Wonder or Metroid Dread, which have similar play times but are more expensive, I would probably happily pick this up at launch if I wasn't try to save money and play through the games I already own.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

inkslinger

If it was literally the only option, I would do it because I have no choice and simply enjoy Nintendo games enough to still buy the console, but it definitely wouldn't be a day one purchase.

If the rumour of two models is true (which is plausible but doesn't sound like Nintendo's style), I would definitely pay the extra for a model that can play physical cartridges. My Switch library is probably about 50/50 and, while digital is more convenient for a lot of reasons, having no ability to play physical would be maddening.

Re: Nintendo President Reiterates Switch Software Support Into FY24/25

inkslinger

@Kimyonaakuma Most of the games announced at the recent Nintendo Direct were remakes, so it definitely seems like they're just trying to pad the lineup as most devs (both within Nintendo and at third parties) have moved on to making games for the Switch 2.

It's possible that some games coming in 2024 will have cross-gen support, but I don't think we'll see many new first party titles beyond what's already been announced (most of which are remakes).

Re: Review: Disney Illusion Island - Mickey Mouse's Metroidvania Is Magical

inkslinger

Definitely looking forward to picking this up now that reviews are confirming all the praise it got in early previews. This will be one to play as a family with my kids, so the lower difficulty and optional invinciblity mode are a positive in my situation.

It's not a day one (uh, today) purchase for me, but will probably find it's way under the Christmas tree this year.

Re: PSA: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom News Channel Giving Out Free In-Game Items

inkslinger

Are these free items useless? Yes.

Is it possible to beat the game without a dupe glitch? Also yes. It might be grindy to get 100% completion, but to simply get enough gear and armour upgrades to beat Ganondorf, it is very doable without a ton of grinding, just in the normal course of playing the game.

If you like the dupe glitch and that's fun for you, great! But I don't know why people act like the game is tediously grindy without it.

Re: Hands On: Disney Illusion Island Is A Spectacular Platforming Surprise

inkslinger

I'm always a bit wary of licensed games, but this has got enough pre-launch hype to make me believe it'll be good. I love the option for infinite lives for new players, because it'll make it a lot more fun to play with my kids. The youngest can have infinite lives while the older has two or three hearts.

I probably won't buy it on day one, but I look forward to eventually picking it up as a good family game.

Re: Nintendo Reveals New Switch Joy-Con Pastel Colour Controller Sets

inkslinger

Nice colours, but I would prefer a Pro Controller in something other than black. XBox and PS4/5 both get multiple colour options without having to go third party. Nintendo thinks people like joycons more than they really do. Either that or they think having multiple colour options softens the blow of having to replace joycons that have developed drift.

Re: Octopath Traveler II Director Talks About The Future Of The Series

inkslinger

@Fulgor_Astral Yeah, a bit more interaction would be nice, especially at help avoid moments where we're really forced to suspend our disbelief, such as an NPC telling one of our protagonists it's three against one, only to have our entire party of four present once the fight begins.

But even that is a minor flaw in a great game.

I skipped the first entry because I didn't even own a Switch at the time and everyone said OT2 is way better. So far, I am loving it at about 16 hours. I know there are many more hours to go, but it's easily my favourite JRPG, having not really played many RPGs since the SNES era. It has the charm of those old games but feels thoroughly modern. The combat system is incredibly engaging and I'm invested in all of the stories (only five characters so far, and I'm invested more in some than others, but they're all interesting).

I would love a sequel eventually, if it's in the cards.

Re: Spring Into Action With Mario Kart Tour's New Spring Tour

inkslinger

I have enjoyed MKT since practically day one (downloaded day one, initially hated the controls and the fact that landscape mode wasn't an option at the beginning, but gave a second shot a few weeks later and was hooked). Ever since getting a Switch and MK8D, I have lost interest in Tour and cancelled my gold pass. I do wish more stuff from Tour would get added to MK8 (such as the T and RMX tracks, and maybe an optional frenzy mode), but overall it pales in comparison to a proper console version.
