Re: Talking Point: Nintendo And The Industry Needs To Get Serious About Game Preservation

ianl579

Nintendo seems to actually be doing ok on the preservation front as all of their rereleases are of high quality (whether old ROMs or remasters). My problem is more with the fact that so few of these classic titles are available on modern consoles. In today's age, where digital copies and streaming of films has become the norm, it would be bizarre if consumers had to purchase 20 year old hardware to watch movies from the early-to-mid 2000s, but that's exactly the case for many GameCube games (and now PS2 games that will no longer be offered on the PlayStation Store). I truly hope that game preservationists, at least, are doing as much as they can to keep these old games available and alive for future generations (including DLC and the like).

I liked Spirit Tracks a lot (even despite my broken 3DS microphone making the Spirit Flute segments an absolute pain) which made it hard to go into Phantom Hourglass afterwards given the quality of life improvements ST made. I do plan to play Phantom Hourglass eventually, but I wish I did it first, before Spirit Tracks.

Anyone who thinks it's ok for Mario All-Stars to stop being sold because "everyone who wants it has gotten it already" shouldn't mind at all if every Switch game released before Sept 2020 suddenly vanished off of the eShop. After all, video games are supposed to only be sold for an arbitary six-month time frame!

I also fully expect this article to be proven wrong when it turns out Nintendo has no plan to continue with Mario 35 or the All-Stars games or anything of the sort. I'll happily eat my words if they do, but I haven't seen any evidence that they would (especially after they weren't brought up in the recent Direct).

Re: Super Mario LEGO Has Been One Of The Company's Most Successful Launches

I know the direction they went with is controversial but it definitely has some merit. I haven't picked up any of the larger playsets since they aren't really geared towards me but I have bought a few of the character packs and I plan on getting more, since they're only $5 each for a Mario enemy in LEGO form! If we do get other Nintendo sets, I hope they're in the traditional style though (like that Temple of Time MOC the site posted a few days ago).

Re: Nintendo Aims To Develop Its Characters Without "Destroying" The Memories Of Fans

Funny how in the last few years Nintendo hasn't really followed this philosophy at all. The least they could do is actually make more of the legacy catalogue available on the Switch (for a fair price) if they're not interested in taking full advantage of their IP. And PR blunders like the ones that piled up late last year and Joy-Con Drift do more to hurt their image than any bad game.

Also, the sequel trilogy didn't just not live up to fan expectations, it was poorly written and mismanaged from the start.
