One of the hottest talking points in the Nintendosphere this year is about to come to an end, as we've finally made it to 31st March, otherwise known as 'Mario doomsday'.
Yes, after months of talking about it and wondering what it means for the future of Nintendo, today is the day that Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, the Super Mario Game & Watch system, and all Super Mario Bros. 35 merchandise will be completely pulled from sale. Super Mario Maker's also having its online services shut down, and even Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light is being sacrificed, too.
While you might find one or two ways of grabbing Super Mario 3D All-Stars after the apocalypse, it wouldn't hurt to buy any of the products mentioned above while you still have the chance. Here's the official takedown notice from Nintendo, should you need a recap:
"The Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary will come to an end on March 31st, 2021. After this date, the following limited-time products and services released in special recognition of the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. will end or be removed from sale.
The digital version of Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be available until March 31st, 2021. If you have purchased the digital version before March 31st, 2021, you will be able to redownload the software after this date if it has been archived or deleted from your console. The physical version of Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be available at your local retailers while stocks last. Please check with your local retailer for information on current availability.
The Super Mario Bros. 35 service will end on March 31st, 2021, and will no longer be playable, even if you still have the game downloaded on your Nintendo Switch console.
The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. system will continue to be shipped to retailers through approximately March 31st, 2021, and will be available for purchase while supplies last. Please check with your local retailer for information on current availability.
Apparel and other products included in the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary collection on the Nintendo Official UK Store will be removed from sale on March 31st, 2021."
So long, Mario. It was nice knowing you.

April 1st, at Nintendo Headquarters:
Furukawa: "Aw damn, I realized just now we were getting money from 3D All-Stars."
RIP, It-were-a-you, Mario. Enjoy your public execution
@AlexSora89 Those poor indie devs not getting their money for their hard work, I made sure to buy 10 copies of 3D All-Stars and 6 Switches just so I can support everything they do
Mario 3D All-Stars is being taken down from the eShop? No way. Thank heavens for this article!
Let’s hope we can just move on from tomorrow. Doubtful, but I guess you never know.
R.I.P Mario, you will be missed.
How do I not know this? Why didn't anyone tell me? Nintendolife, could you not have reported this sooner, several times?
Good! Now we can move on.
It's not like these games will never see a release again. This whole anniversary collection has been over sensationalised by the internet. It's embarrassing to live in the West sometimes.
Wait.... what?! It’s gone after today?! I had no clue💔💔. Some warning would have been nice.
🤓🤓
@GrailUK Good point! While I question the business decision by Nintendo, I remind myself I have a roof over my head, food in the fridge, a switch and more than enough games to play.
Just so I understand this right, all of Mario is being deleted because of some comment he made years ago? It's cancel culture gone mad!
I was playing 35 all the way until it shut down...I was addicted
@Moistnado I mean, I remember seeing this brought up by them multiple times. They even released, like, 3 videos about it! I suppose it’s good that you saw this one, though.
It was probably a good sales trick. It makes people that would usually wait before they buy something, buy it sooner in fear of missing out.
Cant wait to sell my 100 spare copies of Mario 3d All stars for £100 a pop. I mean it's not like the game has sold 8+million copies making it realitvley easy to find for RRP...
@NorseGamerTommy Credit to Nintendo's PR team, it worked. The internet can rant all they want, but the public voted with their wallets and that's all any corporate entity cares about.
Does this mean we can start Zelda hype now pretty please?
Two articles about this today? ^^
I'm surprised you can keep up the appearance that this is some sort of controversial catastrophe. :v
@jump This is what you get for calling so many minions goombas.
@GrailUK But there’s the possibility of that NOT happening. And considering it’s for the Switch, this may be the only way to play games like Galaxy portably. It’s encouraging scalping, a MASSIVE practice currently, which isn’t considerate to consumers, so of course people are complaining!
@SoapMonkey I'm with you brother. Enought of this.
Well, i have bought 3D All Stars in physical, have updated the game as well but i decided to not play them at the moment as my hype currently on BEMANI PS2 games.
Nintendo should never do this business practical again.
It just made half hearted to play Nintendo games in rush.
yall need to accept that if we're gonna let nintendo rake money off of this practice then nintendolife has permission too. nintendos the one doing all the controversy people make articles about anyway, so enjoy the extra clicks guys lol
but man, what a way to trip at the end of a finish line. this was probably their best attempt at a mario anniversary yet, its a shame nintendo wants to erase our memories of this after today
They will release them seperately on the eshop and then you can all stop complaining and crying about it.
@RickD so true.
Oh was that today? Wish someone had mentioned it earlier
@RickD a Nintendo product getting bargain binned? That's unheard off
@stinky_t your comment is so going on a PowerPoint slide during Nintendo's next investor call.
"Country Roads
Let's a Go
It's a me
Mario
Okie Dokie
Mama Mia
Here we go
Mario"
Wait, what? Nintendo are ending their Mario 35th Anniversary celebrations, have I been living in a cave? Where was NL when I needed them.
Well at least I managed to upload 4 out of the 10 possible courses to Mario Maker before it shut down. Didn't want to just upload crap either. I guess I'll upload on SMM2 when I save up for a Switch and the game. Hopefully that won't be shut down by then though.
Finally, normal news items on Nintendolife starting tomorrow. No more "Nintendo is stopping Mario 35"-items.
Nintendo should make up for this and announce Mario Odyssey 2, release October 2021.
Well it has been 4 long years since the first one.
And with the game engine and a lot of assets already there now, it should be easy achievable.
No Sh*t, its not like you have been on about this for the last few months
Yay, at least this will be over until they do the same for the Zelda anniversary.
OMG all the drama about this. People really need to get some perspective, and I'm not talking about the fact that this is all over a series of video games. There are much better and more glaring examples of video game injustice in the gaming world.
what the hell, you sound as if there will be no Mario games ever
NintendoLife must be so upset today.
"NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! TEH CLICKZZ!!!!!!!!"
Don't be surprised if we see the return of our old friend, Brie Larson...
@HaikuHiker Have you bought it?
Let’s just hope this is going to be a big april fools joke...
please
I bought everything day 1 anyway. Get rekt, nerds
I look forward to refreshing the store front to watch it disappear. Are we taking local time, GMT? What's the deal?
Bring on lots of awesome Zelda news
@TheBigK I did. It was less than a dollar.
‘...it wouldn't hurt to buy any of the products mentioned above while you still have the chance.’
I couldn’t disagree more. A boost in sales means we’ll go through all this again and probably soon with Zelda.
@AlexSora89 Actually, Nintendo might have earned more money by making it a limited product than not making it limited, this will probably happen again.
What it's the last day !!! , why did this site not remind us with loads of articles over the last couple of weeks.
What do you mean taken down? Why weren't we informed? I'm outraged!
Still not getting Mario All Stars 😂 I don't care for Mario and fomo isn't going to change that.
All of this has happened before, and all of this shall happen again.
I wonder if it will be at midnight according to Japan time. If not, I could still be able to upload a course in Super Mario Maker, given that they'll remain available for download.
Good job (Doug) Bowser. First time someone running Nintendo has effectively squashed Mario. 🧐 But why?
Wait M-Day is today?
If only Nintendo gave us enough time to buy 3D All-Stars... oh wait, they did. The way I see it (and maybe I'm wrong), if someone wanted the game, they would have bought it already, if not then it's a game, they probably weren't gonna buy anyways.
Good, maybe now Nintendolife will shut up about it.
@GrailUK I don't have the money currently, so I couldn't. Which of course sucks, since Galaxy is said to be one of the best games ever.
@HaikuHiker It's going to be around second hand, I'm sure.
Give it 5 years, he'll be back.
Considering how the prices are looking now BEFORE it's off sale, I'm not holding my breath.
Wilton, you know the plan. Meet me and DK in Delfino Plaza. We’ll eat mushrooms and stars, then take the rainbow road over to the castle and finish what we started. Time to roll this little jumping man and take him down a peg or two.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo said that Splatfests in Splatoon 2 wouldn't happen after March 2021 so...also that.
RIP Super Mario 3D All Stars, happy I bought it before this happened.
Honestly, I am happy about this.
It means the Zelda celebration can start soon
Can't wait for this to happen again with Zelda, and for blind fanboys to keep defending these foolish, anti-consumer practices.
@HaikuHiker Aww. That is a shame. But don't fret. We'll see it again no doubt.
Nintendo leveraging its marquee character to emotionally manipulate its own buyer base is pretty gross. That said it’s not the end of the world. And honestly, in the grand scheme of things, doesn’t matter all that much. Welcome to capitalism folks.
On the video games front, indies have superseded Nintendo’s main IPs for quite some time now (with the exception of Breath of the Wild, of course).
When I think about the games that have truly reached epic levels of my appreciation, that will never be stained or tarnished by such aforementioned practices, there are 2 that come to mind: Cuphead and Hollow Knight. You know a game has fully embedded its way into your gamer heart when you want, and are genuinely excited, to do every single thing it has to offer : ).
This is all an April Fool's Prank! Besides, Mario Golf: Super Rush is still coming to the Switch, this year! You just can't expect Wario to gleefully rejoice this day without his buddies from Diamond City demanding that he pays them!
Funny thing is people really don't watch anything.there said it since they announced mario 35th lol
Nintendo I don't care if you don't celebrate Metroid's anniversary
just please give me the prime trilogy switch port so when 4 comes
out I'll be ready. Also I know this is pretty weird to ask but for DK can we get a new Mario+Rabbids but there's way more DK content just like the DLC.
@GrailUK I definitely hope so!
@HaikuHiker Obvs it's Sunshine's first outing, but Mario 64 didn't die with th N64. Mario 64 and Galaxy didn't die with the Wii. mario 64 and Galaxy didn't die with the Wii U. Mario 64 and Galaxy and Sunshine, won't die with the Switch. The internet, by and large, is stupid.
EVERYBODY PANIC BUY TOILET PAPER!!!
Jeez now there's only 20 Mario games to choose from on Switch, how will we survive?
@GrailUK I can't blame the internet from complaining, though. I've seen a ton of people in this very comment section say that they didn't know about this. Those people can't play the game anymore, and saying that they need to wait to buy a future console is a bit of an ask (to me, at least).
Can't wait for the stroke if midnight when my physical copy turns to dust before my very eyes.
Like a magic trick.
I guess the internet has decided to go into a unsubstantiated collective frenzy once again. Have fun guys! Might be old fashioned, but I'm keep myself busy actually enjoying games in the meantime.
Super Mario 3D All Stars had... 12,931 reviews on Amazon UK when i looked. I think it’s fair to say there are plenty of copies out in the wild!
Used copies can be had from £46ish. And they are cartridges, so they will be the be as new. If you want one, go but one for the same condition, and the same price.
Ending Super Mario Bros 35 is the one thing I don't get, it's just a free online service game that they have barely had out!
@HaikuHiker I doubt it's as bad as waiting for the next console for Mario 64. Like it's not going to feature in an N64 NSO update lol.
It wouldn’t be an anniversary celebration if people weren’t playing these games during his 35th anniversary. One thing is for sure, these limited game releases made me play more Mario games recently then I would if I could have got them later.
Everyone: is sad and in chaos over a few Mario games being taken down today
Me: pauses Rise for a moment....What's going on, did somebody die or something?
Oh, I spent my little me time today creating a course in Super Mario Maker and the feature isn't available anymore. It definitely was March 31st midnight in Japan local time.
A sad day indeed. I couldn't help but order one more copy of Mario 3D All Stars for the collection. Which I will keep sealed since I have the digital version to play whenever. I also finally bought a Gamecube controller adapter for my Switch so next time I play Mario Sunshine I'll use my Wavebird controller 😁.
@jump best comment today!
@bimmy-lee The mushrooms bit sounds good...problem is I'd be too busy laughing and staring at things to take anyone down a peg or two!
@WiltonRoots - Fear and loathing in the mushroom kingdom. Bring some golf shoes. The plants there have teeth, and they’ll be gnashing at us. Impossible to get any traction.
@PushMyGran1986 Star Fox Zero and Metroid Other M come to mind
@GrailUK Yeah. It’s most Galaxy and Sunshine I’m more worried about.
can't believe the woke sjws are about to cancel mario smh
RIP Mario. I will miss you.
Is anyone else still playing Super Mario Bros. 35? I’m still able to play and people are still online as of 6:30am this morning!
Good. Maybe we can stop hearing about it now.
