Yesterday, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were announced for the Nintendo Switch. These games are remakes of Generation IV, which was originally released on the DS and is set in the Sinnoh region.
The development is being handled by ILCA and directed by Junichi Masuda (Game Freak) and Yuichi Ueda (ILCA). The aim is to "faithfully" reproduce and "colourfully" revitalise these classics. To achieve this, the developer has gone with a chibi style in the game's world, while in battle, the characters and Pokémon are more accurately proportioned.
Of course, as you've probably seen yourself, the reaction online to the chibi style in these remakes has been mixed, so we thought now would be a good time to see what the Nintendo Life community thinks about it. Vote in our poll and leave a comment down below.

I don't mind a chibi art style when done well but I hate this one. It just looks like a cheap and nasty cash grab.
I won't be buying it as I don't see much point in a remake that looks worse than the original. Could just play the original instead.
ilca better do a tony hawk 5 and get a new artstyle before release!
Not a fan of it. It looks like a cheap mobile game. But still I will buy the games.
@BenAV I was honestly excepting them to say "Download for free today!"
It looks quite nice but I prefer the original pixel art.
If they polish it over the months and it actually looks better than Nexomon (which is a mobile game and looks way better btw) than I'd think about giving it a try.
If it stays like this, it's a pass from me dawg.
I like the artstyle. I get why others don't but at least those who don't have the Arceus Legends games to get hyped about.
Tiny Dawn is helping me slowly like the art style more. Didn't think it looked bad at first, just unimpressive compared to ORAS
I dislike the character models but I really like the rest
It could work well, but it all looks very cheap. Compare the textures in links awakening to this for how to do Chibi right vs wrong.
Chibi art style is a great fit, but expected more from a Switch Pokémon game. That's what the poll is suggesting at the moment!
Looks great to me, though.
But an excuse to imagine it in another style. GTA IV maybe. Or maybe like asteroids.
(The cartoony style of GTA might work?)
No strong feelings - I'm biased towards 2D and would have certainly picked the original visuals with some pixel facelift, but it's not like Moon and Sword haven't long acclimatized me to Pokemon casts in CG. And the chibi style actually seems like trying to go CG while replicating some of the original design's vibes.
I'm not ok with their faces, they look like some generic stuff from f2p game from Google Play.
Still quite confused about this whole thing. Is the problem literally just the overworld character models? That's just about the only thing I see mentioned wherever I go. I also feel like the option "The original games in HD would have been fine" is what we got.
I don't have anything against the look of the game. I just need something to differentiate it from the original Diamond and Pearl to make it worthy purchase.
ngl i love the chibi art style
Love everything but the character models in the overworld, I would've preferred it to be similar to ORAS.
I think the environment and camera angle are great! As for the chibies, well they are looking kinda funny to me. In a good way.
If it had the QUALITY of say the Link's Awakening remake then sure, I could happily accept it for at least looking nice, but unfortunately it's an extremely cheap look and you'd absolutely be kidding yourself if you didn't think this was possible on the 3DS.
It simply just looks like an upscaled 3DS game.
@GH7Cloud don’t understand how Nexomon Extinction looks better and more charming than a reskin of a mainline Pokémon game, even if it’s not developed by their main studio
It's not even bad looking. I believe people like to complain just to complain sometimes
Sinnoh deserves better.
I love the Chibi style ! 😘

Even i drew Lucas in Chibi style.
I don't mind it and the games aren't finished yet. The final product will look better. Reserve judgement!
These are the original games in HD. Instead of pixel chibi it's 3D chibi. No where close as bad looking chibi as X/Y.
Before the Direct everyone was demanding they do something other than lets go... all of a sudden they wanted that... get a grip whiners.
It's not that it's Chibi that's the issue. It's that it's really low quality and low budget art that bugs me.
Link's Awakening was kinda like chibi but looked great.
Personally I would have preferred if the diamond/pearl remakes had looked like the legends game.
I find the graphics ugly,
looks worse than Pokémon Let's Go! (which is already not that appealing for me), both are like the Secret of Mana remake everybody dislikes.
It would be perfection if it had a Link's Awakening art-style
BUT a cel-shading filter like Omega Ruby would already make much better.
Anyway i enjoyed the announcement and probably gonna buy
The chibi art style is such a blasphemy and a disgusting stain to the greatness of Diamond and Pearl... what a disservice to the remakes, at least put some effort to make them look less inferior compared to omega Ruby and alpha sapphire..
I was not crazy about it when it was first revealed yesterday, but after re-watching the trailer a couple of times it has sort of grown on me. All in all, it looks like a pretty faithful 3D-isation of the original assets and art style, with the top-down view and the squat little chibi-esque sprites of the original 2D games.
Style aside, I’m actually really looking forward to these games. Though Ruby was my very first Pokemon game, Pearl was the first one I really got into (I still remember being like 11 and poring over videogame magazines for any snippet of news on the game before it came out) and is probably still my favourite game in the series, so it’ll be fantastic to get to revisit that region with a new coat of paint and some QOL improvements. And it’ll be double the fun to get to play with my fiancé, who is a very recent Nintendo convert and has only ever experienced Pokemon games through Let’s Go and Sw/Sh (the heathen), so I can finally show him what a more traditional Pokemon game actually feels like, assuming that these are going to be pretty faithful remakes of the originals à la HG/SS or OR/AS.
Garbage graphics, looks low effort
I don't want to pile-on, as the game will probably be as fun and functional as the rest of the Pokemon games, but it feels lazy and out of touch. Maybe it's because I've been playing my PS4 a lot lately, but seeing Diamond and Pearl I'm deeply underwhelmed that it looks like it could've been a 3DS game.
I think New Pokemon Snap and Legends look much better and much more inspired than the mainline pokemon games have in years.
Chibi art style looks too childish and cheap look at Link's Awakening the original looks better than the remake and in this case at least they look good when they battle but when you want a remake you expect upgrades from the original not just copy paste this looks more like a remastered but maybe it was for the better, and hopefully they add Mega evolutions at least
I will always prefer the chibi 3D from XY and ORAS, but I understand this one is a little underwhelming.
In any case, graphics never deterred me from enjoying Nintendo games, I'm indifferent to these. So long as it plays like DPPt, I'm fine
I’m not a fan of the look, I’ll likely give the game a miss.
This is a remake on a limited budget, and it's not made by GameFreak itself. And of all of the developers that have worked on Pokémon...they picked the developers of Pokémon Home?
They heard how many people wanted it, and gave us the bare minimum. If they fixed the scale so it was more like ORAS then it might look better, but this is just a cheap mess. Even text boxes and environments look really sterile and boring.
it's hard to say how i feel about this design. it looks okay, but i would had preferred the ORAS look for this game instead. i guess i'll have wait and see more though.

other than that, the battle models for the characters looks amazing!
for anyone confused, i'm talking about these models (in battle):
The problem is not the chibi style. The problem is that it seems pretty poor, technically speaking. Link's Awakening and Animal Crossing are chibi but delicious for the eyes.
If you don't like the chibi artstyle, then what exactly have you been looking at for the last 25 years? I think it looks fine. Let's not all start chasing realism in video games please.
I mean, it's cute. But not as good as Link's Awakening. If it was a budget title, I could understand it. But as a full priced remake, I expect more. This one is a pass for me.
It should have looked the same as God of War, The last of Us or Horizon Zero Dawn!
Personally I wish it could be Gen VI's style, but chibi style is also fine. But making everything looks so cheap is not fine.
Just compare this with other games with cel shading, and also compare its battle model with Pokemon Masters. This looks even worse than a smartphone F2P game.
Chibi ≠ Cheap, "fix" chibi won't fix its cheapness, and chibi is not an excuse for its cheapness.
I really was expecting the remake to use the same engine and assets as Pokemon Sword/Shield or the Let's Go games and was a little put off by the chibi art style.
That said, I know I'll enjoy playing the game. The fact that the game is being remade to be very close to the originals probably means it will be a very nostalgic experience.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus seems to be closer to the remake I was hoping for in terms of art style.
I think the art style is a great fit for the original game’s aesthetic. Very happy with it. For a more “mainstream” appearing game there’s sword/shield and the new one in 2022.
I was really happy to see the chibi style still intact! I don't really like the newer "gangly" style characters... I think that they drain a lot of the charm out of the game.
I wouldnt mind it if the game was good. This looks like a complete reskin though, which I seriously wont hope.
Graphics suck but SsSh had the same problem
Love it ! it will be the first pokemon game i buy
As I've already mentioned in the article about the announcement, I'm liking the chibi art-style as it's very very reminiscent of the original games.
However I would like something like HD-2D for remakes of Pokemon games as I've always believed that artstyle would suit the games well.
I have never played DP so it’s not super familiar to me but when I watched the reveal yesterday there were times where I was legitimately not sure If was seeing a clip from the original or the Switch remake. That’s…not good.
I’ll be getting the game and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but it’s a little on the disappointing side, graphics-wise. I voted for Let’s Go art-style in the poll. I thought it was cute & colorful and would be fine for a remake. The Pokémon/trainer battles look very Let’s Go graphically. SwSh-style looks can be saved for new games.
I know both my 9 & 11 year old, who are huge Pokemon fans, were underwhelmed by the look of the game.
I was hoping for a Sword and Shield style, but it's a detail to me, I don't really mind.
The Story of Seasons remake already toed the line of tolerable chibi design for me, but it didn't look quite as cheap overall as this game. I get they were going for a recreation of the otiginals' pixel style, but it just doesn't translate all that well to 3D models, and Let's Go looking so much better just adds to the disappointment.
I was mostly hoping for the games to be less clunky on the technical side, but if I'm expected to pay full price for this I'd rather just replay the old ones.
Having a chibi aesthetic in a remake when the original games didn't aim for it (it was merely hardware/team's limitations) doesn't make much of a sense. 2.5D sprite style would be much better for keeping the spirit of the originals, while giving these new games some unique flair to differentiate it from other Pokemon titles.
Then again, I'm generally not a fan of Pokemon remakes, because they're always super safe and never do enough to justify their prices.
The heavy use of : "we used the original versions, not emerald!!" Is really concerning. The original dp games always get mentioned as one of the worst, and then 10 spots higher Emerald emerges.
I haven't played them, but I'm definitely holding my cash till I know more! (And the art style only enhance these suspicions of wanting to stay as close to the original dp as possible.. )
@BenAV "I don't mind a chibi art style when done well but I hate this one. It just looks like a cheap and nasty cash grab."
Exactly my opinion as well. Chibi is nice in general. But this one looks heartless and empty.
I like the idea, but it looks pretty cheap...
Links awakening had a similar style, but looked waaaaay better. It looked like an old game with a great new coat of paint.
This kinda just looks like an old game.
If they were going to try and be faithful to the ds original, I think going the handdrawn sprite route would have been the way to go.
But that kinda sounds like way to much effort for them.
@Dragwhite Same. It's funny that a 3ds game has better visuals and art direction to a home console release.
Honestly, if I’m giving an ideal art style, they rip off square’s aesthetic used in octopath traveler and triangle stratego
Unless you're going full retro, it's difficult to get away from a chibi-like style if you're doing a top-down grid game. You want your characters to fill the squares, you want big well defined heads cause it's top down, and it would be difficult meeting people's expectations any other way.
Looks fine! Get over it!
I actually think the art direction is really cute and can be done well (World Of Final Fantasy, Link's Awakening), but the quality of the graphics here just isn't up to par. Everything's so low-poly, it looks more like a PSP game than an HD Switch title.
I don't mind the chibi art-style, but what I do mind is the ugly, low effort textures, which make it look like a mobile game and the lack of proper lighting effects.
As others have said, just look at how nice Link's Awakening looks and then look at this..
I dont get the hate.
This is exactly what everyone wanted.
If it looks too cheap its prob cause the originals looked way too cheap for its time.
Pkmn has been stagnant for 25 years and lacking in graphical advancements. This was to be expected.
It feels a bit like cheating but it doesn't bother me too much. I'd rather they make the games actually fun to play before making them real pretty.
@liljmoore,
On here, people complaining, just for the sake of complaining, no never.
Naturally I don't like the chibi style. The 2.5D style is outdated and has no place being a $60 game on the Switch. However, this is worse than just 2.5D, it doesn't have the polished, crisp look of other 2.5D games by Nintendo (Link's Awakening HD, Pokemon LGP/E). This looks like a 3DS game released on the Switch.
Its not going to bother me when I play it its just I was hoping for it to look like S&S Saying how pokemon love to reuse stuff.
@Rika_Yoshitake,
Yes people want change, then complain when things change, Gamefreak are stuck between a rock and a hard place with this one.
New Pokémon snap looks great, but I always wished for a 3D graphic style that was true to the early games, I always used to think about when I saw the new links awakening
However, since it's simple, I wish it spanned multiple regions, but I'll take what I can get!
I'm fine with it, it is like the original Games merged into 3D.
I think it's alright. I think it's just mostly surprising because the remakes tended to match the style of the latest generations. So OR/AS were redesigned to fix X/Y, the maps were similar but redone to reflect the new style.
I wonder if it's because ILCA is making it. It might be risky for a new team to reinvision a game they never worked on(D/P) into a far more detailed style(Sw/Sh)...they didn't work on either.
If ILCA are going to be doing remakes from now it's probably the smarter move to have them replicate
the original exactly. So then they've at least got experience making an authentic game before they let loose reinvisioning future entries.
Doesn't really bother me at all. I can't understand why it looks that way because that's how the original games looked
It’s like the chibi versions! I was more disappointed when I saw the regular proportions in the battles, though that is faithful to the originals.
I will say though on the whole it all does feel a little lacking in polish in some areas. Some textures could do with a little more stylisation and the lighting is a little off. But that’s something that could change and it still looks very cute and fun and faithful.
I for one love the chibi artstyle. It looks just fine to me. I mean it is a remake of the original games afterall. Besides it is made by a company that is probably more used to making smartphone apps, so I when I heard that ILCA was developing it I knew this is probably the best we could have hoped for. And I don't mind it. TBH I like the artstyle of Link's Awakening on the Switch. It makes for a cute lil' game to hold us over till Pokemon Legends Arceus releases in early 2022.
The new art style is by no means bad and is at least closer to the original games. That said, I think I find it jarring since a lot of the pixel art has been removed. It'll grow on me I think. We still have some time before release for some cleanup.
Edit: To clarify, I don't mind the 3D battle sections. It's mainly the overworld that bothers me.
I know I've mentioned this before, but my favorite art style representations in the whole series were what we saw in Gens 4 and 5. So this spans Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Black/White 1/2.
I was gonna play this game since its the only one I had left. I don't really like the graphics so I'm glad I can just play it on my hacked 3DS
Not really one I definitely like but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
The original's pixel art was nice in a 'retro' kind of way but would have been wierd playing a "remake" looking exactly like that again but in HD IMO.
Maybe using the sword and shield models would have been nice.
I feel sad that there's so many people disliking that cute art style because I like it a lot. I know it's going to be an unpopular opinion but I couldn't be happier with it! it's soooo cuuuuteeeeeeeee! don't kill me please..
@liljmoore
I was thinking that exact same thing
It should have looked like Darkest Dungeon.
I don't mind graphics, but I don't like that they returned to original clothes. In first 3 regions enchanted versions and later remakes they changed clothes. Etc Hoenn region is warm region, but they gave clothes that are more suited for colder climate in RS, then they bit fixed that in E and totally fixed in ORAS. While Sinnoh is cold region, but in DP player is wearing clothes more suited for warm climate, but that was fixed in Pt. But now they again uses bad clothes for current climate.
It's fine. Future games will look more like sword and shield, so at least they are doing something new while they have the chance. Plus if it looked EXACTLY like Legends, we wouldn't be as excited for the next game.
Plus, the difference in style between the battles and overworld is analogous to the original.
I’m not a fan. Plus the lighting is far inferior to Link’s Awakening so it looks a bit flat. I’d personally prefer something like Octopath’s graphics.
" I was hoping it would look like Sword and Shield" so... badly to say a nice word, you mean? 😬
To all the people that say: "Everytime GF does something, we complain."
Well its because GF didnt manage to deliver a decent game for years now! Every game has major flaws. SwSh is far too easy, boring, lazy and charges 30$ for a DLC that literally has next to no content. Lets Go are so easy and dumbed down, which is fine for kids and people with disabilities, but barely playable for experienced gamers. Sun and Moon was decentish, but USUM was literally the same game. And this was released 2016. We have every right to complain tbh.
I mean every game provides something for a certain fanbase, but core gamers that started early were neglected for years now.
Its really ugly. If they were gonna be lazy with this remake, they should've at least used the chibi style from ORAS
Those designs are a great fit for pokemon and even tho it would've instead looked like another 3ds game, at least it would've been better than whatever this is
They could’ve gone with something better but this really doesn’t bother me.
The chibi concept is good but the execution needs to be better.
Being very, very faithful to the DS original is cool but the character models needed tweaking and the general shading needs work, it's a bit too soft.
It's fine. I actually like the idea of replicating the look of the GBA originals if they're going to import the original game's level design wholesale: it was very jarring seeing enormous Pokemon models fluttering almost as large as grassy spaces that are supposed to represent fields in LGPE, IMO.
It doesn't look as good as Link's Awakening, but then, it points in that area if it doesn't also have that game's framerate issues.
The chibi style isn't the problem, it's the lack of polish on everything. Compared to something like Link's Awakening, the textures, lighting and models are very flat and basic.
Please make it consistent for remakes (like ORAS). I don't wanna see future Black/White remake in chibi like this.. Dawn and Rosa deserve much better! Being faithful doesn't mean being cheap and I expect more from Pokemon games on Switch.
I just wanted a let’s go Pokémon with button controls.
I like the artstyle, and it makes sense as the main team working on the Pokémon 2022 game
I'll get over it, but it does bother me that they go for 3D without making use of the benefits that comes with it.
It this is what they were going for then they oughta just have used sprites instead, I've always though Pokemon lost something when they ditched the 2D.
I remember lots of people saying with Link's Awakening came out "this is how they should do the pokemon remakes" those people are less than happy with the result.
To be fair to them, if the studio behind this put the same effort in as LOZ: LA remake they'd be happy.
I said the same with the Let's Go games, I don't like remakes that don't bring the games up to date, so far on the artsyle side of things this isn't delivering.
I think the art style looks great big upgrade while preserving the grid of the original
I would have preferred Let's Go style visuals. I wouldn't have been disappointed by an HD ORAS type style. I will get over the BDSP style as long as they add good QoL like no HM's (unlikely I know), fairy type, newer moves/move pull, Platinum updates/event areas in game, or newer pokemon/regional variants (Sylveon or G-Rapidash) etc.
As always, these options are terrible. They should be: “I love them / I like them / Neutral / I dislike them / I hate them”. Putting arbitrarily specific option instead of normal ones causes the results to be messed up.
Artstyle is growing on me
I'm more concerned about:
-Rotom forms
-Giratina Origin Form
-Distortion World
-Shaymin Sky Form
-Darkrai Event
-Arceus Event
-Regigigas Event
-Platinum Sinnoh Dex (DP Fire type issue)
-Battle Frontier (Nature & IV items exchanged for BP)
-Looker
-Ball Seals
-Underground
-Multiple use TMs
-Beign able to catch Gen 1-4 w/o Sw/Sh
-GYM leader rematches
-I'm impartial to Mega Evo, Z-Moves, Giga/Dynamax, Primal Forms, Manaphy Event, Contests & Poffins
-Would be nice if Secret Bases were back to Gen 3/6 where you could battle real trainers once a day, get EXP and recruit them to create your own "gym"
I love it 🥰
And my kids to 👍🏼
I wouldn't have it in other way
The textures are a bit off-putting and tacky. Especially when the GBA, DS and 2DS games look so nice, and hold up well. I was expecting it to look more like X/Y Sun/Moon. But I'll still nab it.
I like it. It's not groundbreaking, but it's not a bad look; it's modern while remaining faithful to the style of the original games.
It looks okay, if not a bit generic. Definitely could be better. But it's hard to be mad at this when we know Legends is a thing. It's a win win in my book. Now gimme that Battle Frontier back, will you?
I honestly think it looks fine. I think it gives D/P a fresh coat of paint and that is all that is needed. It feels like they are going down the same path as the Mario franchise with the "New" line of games in that they will have an old school style game, and a more modern game. I hope they retain features that were put in place with Platinum.
The chibi models are cute but the environments look so bland and the colours are flat. It needs more detail to make things pop
I'm all for outsourcing the games, but picking a company that's never made a full game before to handle a remake like this seems a bit of a weird choice?
I am continually confused by the choices these guys make with such a big franchise.
Chibi art isn’t my style at all. I might still give the game a go though.
I still think Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is the gold standard for 3D Pokemon games. New Pokemon Snap looks amazing, but could that be matched in a game that needs lots more Pokemon and animations, not to mention trainers, all up to that standard? Not sure.
I hope chibi isn't catching on, though. I didn't like it with Link's Awakening, and I don't like it here.
Personally I think if it wasn't going to be in the SW/SH art style, then I would have liked to see ORAS/X&Y stlye in HD - nice sweet spot between SW/SH art stlye and the semi-chibi style of gen 6
If Game Freak and Creatures Inc aren't developing it, it's definitely a no from me. Even Game Freak puts in more effort than this on their worst outing. They are focusing on Pokemon Legends and so am I. 🤷🏾♂️
I didn't like it at first but now it's starting to grow on me. I also think that they will make the games look better before they release
I'd prefer if they completely remade the world in a new 3d environment with Sword and Shield's word style( but with higher quality textures please). Look at both Botw and xeboblade 2, they can do so much more with the hardware in both these remakes and legends Arceus. Anyway, platinum was my first game, I feel like this style will give me plenty of nostalgia as it is essentialy the original game remade in HD, I don't know why that option was in the poll and there is no way the original looks better as some say it. It looks good but they can do better than that. I feel like they really need help with optimizing these games, it was the reason I skiped sword and shield.
I hate the ORAS style, and I think it ages really poorly. This is an artistic approach that fits the game and would age better, if it looked a little more polished. When you look at the quality of textures in games like Octopath, the lack of shading in the models really bothers me. Even in the Legends Bidoof and the Pokemon all lack any texture? It’s like the trainers and Pokemon are inflatable.
Like I’ve said in other comments... I think this style is a perfect fit. 10/10.
I advise anyone who doesn’t like it to just give it time and see if it grows on you. There’s too much going on in the world to get legitimately mad over a Pokémon game lol.
That's not chibi art, that's lazy/poor efforts.
Please look at Link's Awakening remake for how it should look like.
I was kind of hoping for a deeper remake in a more SwSh look, but the chibi style is pretty faithful to the original artstyle, and it looks so much better then the fish eyed bobbleheads that the Friends of Mineral Town remake had.
Artstyle? I dont even like the font!!
The chibi artstyle is very faithful to our good old sprites from Gen 3-5. As my younger self, one of the reasons I left Pokémon was the change from sprites to anime. Seeing this brings me back.
However, it doesn't go without flaws. The colours and shading in Let's Go and Sw/Sh looked amazing and it sucks that they weren't part of the chibi art style we have. If you compare to the Link's Awakening remake's artstyle to BD/SP, the difference is almost night and day.
Graphically speaking, I don't mind the art style, but I really do desire something that's more fitting for the Switch's hardware capabilities, not something that looks like it was an upscaled 3DS/mobile game.
I think we've already been proven on multiple occasions that Bandai Namco's Pokémon-related games (most notably Pokkén Tournament, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and New Pokémon Snap) look far better in almost every way.
They are preserving, and updating the original art style. I love it. Up until X and Y Pokemon games were Chibi. Using the Chibi style is perfect for the remakes. Link's Awakening on Switch was done beautifully using the same update but respect the original art style formula.
“ I was hoping for the same art style as Pokémon Let's Go”
What? Does this not look like Let’s Go? I thought it looked exactly like Let’s Go
It looks like a modernized version of the original. If you can play the old games still, I don’t understand the meltdown over this one.
All the haters saying they won't buy this, are going to buy this. It happens every time.
Geez Pokemon articles get so toxic these days.
I like the chibi style because it won't ruin the vibes. Everyone thinks everything has to look like shield, but remember this game is old and it was styled to look like the classic Pokèmon and that's what they still kept only it's less pixel. I've played classic Pokemon games and l enjoy the looks of it. I liked Pokemon moon style too because it was mixed with modern and classic but shield is too modern and l never got the vibes from it.
2D would've been better still.
3D Pokémon games still don't look half as good as the 2D ones, and I cannot help but feel that a lot was lost in the transition.
This is a graphical downgrade through and through. I know people are gonna act like 3D is always a step up but no, it's not.
The 2D art was genuinely good, the 3D one is not.
If they had gone all-in with a Link's Awakening style, I would've had no issue whatsoever, as that game has a fantastic art direction.
Edit: also, the poll is super confusing and bundles together a lot of option that are not in the same ballpark, rendering this whole endeavor pointless.
I'm looking at the results and I still have no idea what kind of conclusions I'd have to draw from these results.
Internet complains about Sword/Shield's graphics - Game is the best selling mainline Pokemon game since Gold/Silver.
The artstyle is ok - not really convincing enough to want to play a remake that I don't have any childhood affection to.
@Northwind yeah, by all means ignore that almost 40% combined of people in the first poll said that either "they expect more from a Switch game" or "they can't stand this art style".
You really believe that 52% of consensus is a lot?
Noone ever said that the majority dislikes Pokémon games, that would be madness seeing how well they sell, but if these percentages don't point towards a heavily divisive game, I don't know what does.
That's what we who complain about the current status of Pokémon get at, that these games are highly divisive, while they have all the resources in the world to not have to.
I’d even go further and say I want the Pokemon redesigned in chibi-style, not just the humans.
Personally, I hear yanny
"Why doesn't it look like it should be played on my $5000 super computer!? Doesn't anyone understand? I buy games on Nintendo systems for the graphics!"
That's the vibe I'm getting from some people.
Honestly, they look alright. Plus we have 7-9 months for them to add stuff or clean up things. IF by say august or so they still look rough THEN we can really start complaining. Right now we should let them know we feel they could look better but saying they look like garbage now isn't constructive at all.
It’s Pokemon. Gotta complain about something.
I Like it. Never Played the Originals, and The Art style reminds me of Link's Awakening. Was Kinda hoping it would look like Sword/Shield though.
I absolutely love the style. It is not a style I will pay 59.99 for though.
It’s beautiful, already preordered both Diamond & Pearl!!!
I just think the original games are more appealing visually and if you're not going to fully take advantage of modern hardware then just releasing those together as a package would have been preferable
I really like the art style, not quite as good as Link's Awakening remake, but that's okay. D/P are my favorite Pokemon games, so I'm excited to revisit Sinnoh.
I'm cool with the chibi style in of itself, but I wish they stepped up the lighting and textures. It doesn't have to be rendered exactly like Link's Awakening, but they're still asking to be endlessly compared to Link's Awakening
I'll readily admit that I personally don't care much for the art direction. That having been said, I'm not going to rant or rave about it as it's not a deal breaker.
I'm more concerned about the innards. Will it have Platinum's improvements instead of being a direct port of Diamond and Pearl? How much, if any, new content will it have beyond retreading DPPt? Are we getting a proper Battle Frontier? Things like that.
I do feel it looks worse than the original. Honestly the chibi style isn’t really what’s bothering me, it’s the chibi style mixed with those jaggy dull colors and graphics. I’m not a complainer of graphics and sharp HD visuals but it really just looks lazily done. I’ll be able to deal with the chibi style if they sharpen things up a bit. I use the word sharpen but I mean spruce it up, put some more work in, do some tweaking. I’m sure it wasn’t the final product we saw and am hopeful some more adjustments will be made but by golly, wow.
Pokémon Sun/Moon and their Ultra variants remain my pinnacle. That Pokédex was massive and things were exciting.
And like I said, I’m probably buying it either way, I am invested in Pokémon Bank already after all, but I was hoping for a bit more.
EDIT 14: hoping they lift the curtain on some mode that allows you to toggle real-time — akin the Dragon Quest — old graphics, as shown, or new graphics like SW/SH.
thought oh look they are making Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl out of Animal Crossing New Horizions the styles are quite similar
It’s not that I don’t like chibi art styles but the graphics on this just look bad. Like some freeware harvest moon game on iOS from about four or five years ago. Legends was also terrible. I’m sorry, it might sounds extreme but I think it’s shameful.
I don't mind the Chibi style but my son is not a fan of it. He is 16 but grew up playing the older games on my GBC and then later on a hand me down DS before getting his own 3DS. He said he would like to see them do a new Pokemon in the Bravely Default style that plays with some modern 3D features but is a throwback to the pixel art style of the past.
@Northwind if you say I misinterpret your point, I apologize, but I also think it wasn't as clear as it could've been.
The two points you brought up in rapid succession seemed to indicate the intention of "defending" the games by attacking those who complained about these and Swoosh, reducing them to a vocal minority that doesn't emerge when people are voting anonymously, as if there were the Pokémon hate brigades doing the rounds and convicting everyone who doesn't agree. I'm exaggerating here of course, but it can be argued that you are as well.
It's my bad for getting it wrong, but you might want to take a look at your comments as well and see if their point is clear enough, not just shift the blame on the reader; it's hardly ever only one party's fault, whenever there's a misunderstanding.
There's something to learn for the both of us here, I believe.
Nonetheless, I absolutely own up to my part of the blame and apologize for unwillingly misconstruing your points.
Also, I reread my comment and I can see where you're coming for, I apologize for that as well.
I will say it once again. Sword and Shield graphics is inferior to the 2D graphics used in Gen 1-5. Pokemon should have never went full 3D. Theres nothing wrong with 3D, I just don't think it works for Pokemon. It takes away the charm and simplicity of these games. That being said, I'd gladly take the chibi remakes over anything 3D.
I don't like the chibi art style, but that's not the reason I'm disappointed by the remake. The art style is not the issue. It's that the gameplay looks like it's two generations out of date. We've got used to Pokemon remakes being premium products, improving on the game directly before them, filled with QoL improvements, and a huge celebration of the franchise. These looks cheap, and it's not because it's chibi.
@Sooezz The game is still in development
If they were going to just revive the original artstyle, I really wished they went with the Octopath 3D sprite look. Style we got is just fine tho
I love the art style- just not for a remake of Diamond And Pearl.
This looks like a reskin with new graphics, like they started trying to make a real modern pokemon game with the arceus legend thing, realized it was a lot of work, cut it down to a smaller project and just rushed this new thing out. It literally looks like a one for one remake, which sure, that's fine-- but who's it for?
Seriously? New people that got into pokmeon via all the new games and go?
The classic fans who wanted to play diamond and pearl with graphics akin to sword and shield?
Didn't think so. As cute as this is, I hope it fails hard. Gamefreak needs its majority hsares bought out by nintendo, then completely restructured as a company. THey have no clue what they're doing.
I was interested until I seen that they were up for preorder in game for £60. A DS port (with updated graphics) is the same price as a PS5 game!
Its going to be a hard pass from me, I will go back and Replay Platinum without the dodgy mobile graphics instead.
Eh, it's cute and all, but it's barely different from the original. Why should I buy this if I could just replay the originals?
The models look like they're from those shovelware parties games that flooded the Wii.
Chibi style is super cute, when done with heart. Shame the Pokemon Company seems to have lost theirs...
@BenAV This is like when people say something "looks like a PS2 game" and you know they actually don't remember what PS2 game looks like.
I'm willing to tolerate it in a game I otherwise really want to play. But I absolutely do not like chibi art. It's one of the main reason I never tried the Bravely Default games. With so many RPG's to choose from on the 3DS, why would I go with one that looks like that? I also have to say, I don't like when the game can't decide what the characters are supposed to look like. They are chibi in the over world, but normal (by Pokemon standards) in battle? That's just dumb.
I actually like it. Not at all what I was expecting but I always though a Pokemon in the style of the Link's Awakening remake would be really neat... and here it is lol. It's far from perfect but I'll definitely be trying it out. And that Legends game for next year... definitely a good Direct.
Of course they were going to become like this. When you can milk money without effort obviously you're going to do it as long as possible. Only until (or if) they get serious backlash will they go back and actually put in the sort of work one expects from a Nintendo product.
Why did they have to make the gen 4 remakes their worst effort? Platinum is the height of the series, by far, and this is just a slap in the face to all of us. I preferred the Let's Go art style over the SwSh art style, but I can live with SwSh. These games are just not worth it. Link's Awakening was different because each Zelda remake previously kepts it's original style, just updated with new art, textures, etc. Pokemon already has an established remake cycle and style, updated to match the current generation, so to throw that away is a waste. I am interested to see how well these sell, though. Without a significant upgrade, these will be the first mainline games I skip. I would rather they give these the Metroid Prime 4 treatment.
People: The trees in PokemonSS!! bleh... waaa waaa this! waaa waaa that!
Also People: I was hoping it would look like Sword and Shield (27%)
Scandalous. <resting b-face>
About my opinion... I wasn't expecting anything to be honest. And I wished so much Genius Sonority (Colosseum and XD on Gamecube) could do another game...
I was watching the Pokemon Direct without any hype, but wanted to listen what they've to say.
Chibi DP surprised me a bit. And, well, it looks so cute... Then I saw it's from ILCA and wondered what GameFreak was doing all the time.
Then they dropped the Arceus trailer and it looked really nice and all... Probably the first game ever I'm going to pre-order... But who developed this? ...What? GameFreak? Seriously? What happened? Well, it's good that they opened up for something new.
Also, it looks like some older Japan. As you can see from the buldings and how the protagonist is dressed. And that the focus is on Arceus is kinda interesting. Because in Pokemon Arceus is God. The trailer also said that we're working on the FIRST Pokedex ever, which means we aren't going to have a stupid Rotomdex. That's a big plus. :3
I'm going to buy both games. Chibi-Gen4 and BotW-Pokemon? Yass, please!
The remakes look like a modernized take on exactly how the DS games looked. I'm fine with the style they went with, and look forward to playing through the games later this year. Ideally, at least going into the idea of remakes, I had Let's Go in mind since they've looked the best out of the current Pokemon games to me on Switch so far. I certainly wasn't expecting them to look like Sword & Shield, nor did I want them to, considering the visual issues those games have. I'm more skeptical of Pokemon Legends Arceus because of its style than I am of what looks like a very visually faithful remake.
It’s funny to me that Pokemon fans were ***** on Sword and Shield’s graphics because of the trees even tho imho the game generally looks good overall, has some nice sets and fine art direction even if it’s not the sharpest title on the platform. Yet they really giving the diamond pearl artstyle a pass. I personally don’t like the way the games looks tbh. Looks like some goofball funko pop style but it’s fine because I’m more interested in the new title. I think a nicer chibi style exists in Zeld’a Link’s Awakening remake. Truly it’s the nostalgia.
Bring back the sprites!
@JellyPop "I'm all for outsourcing the games, but picking a company that's never made a full game before to handle a remake like this seems a bit of a weird choice?"
...I don't comprehend your question.
On the internet you always see people being like
"I can't get a job without experience, but I can't get experience without a job. "
So... How's ILCA supposed to gain experience when you don't allow them to try it just because they never did it before?
It's the same with dating. People always go for "graphics". Maybe he/she is highly educated, or is into the same things you're, or you can have deep conversation about everything with them. How will you know when you don't give them a chance because you don't like their "graphics"?
I'm not crazy about the art style, but I'm buying the games regardless.
@Kirby_Girl It's not the trees, it's Falinks vs. a staircase. In general, Sword looks fine though, I agree. I just think the classic style of Gen. 1-5 with updated graphics is a much better look for Pokemon. Ideally, I want the games to look like Let's Go, where it still generally seems top down and all the Pokemon are scaled to their size.
I don't hate chibi art style but something about the character models in the overworld I don't like. The in battle models I am ok with (bar the faces the look too flat and seem less expressive then the still faces of the 2d games but that is still early days).
Everything else I love about it but after being burned with SwSh I wi not be preordering it and waiting for release day to see what people have to say about the game then get it afterward after people have found out what is in the game (like maybe platinum extra).
The only thing that has me excited about is that game freak is not working on it so that does give me hope.
I think the art style is fantastic and a great fit! In my opinion, the originals are ugly and inconvenient, I play pokemon for the post-game (Shiny hunting, competitive, etc.) so playing the originals again is pointless for me. This remade art style puts a modern twist on the top-down classic. Sword and shield are ugly and rushed games, and I hate how they look. ILCA Inc. is a small team so you can't expect a massive, fancy looking game.
I'm warming up to the art style but the character models look awful, both the overworld ones and the battle ones. If a mediocre visual upgrade is all that this remake offers, it's not worth $60 to me. Hopefully they improve the lighting and models before launch.
My ideal Pokemon game would retain the top down perspective but with high-def 2d sprite work. Sprites capture such a unique form of expression that 3d just doesn't.
My friend gave me Pearl a long time ago, it's lost somewhere, played roughly half of it before getting stuck and bored. I was looking forward to these remakes, hoping a fresh coat of paint would make it more enticing. Instead this looks comparable to.. well nothing is comparable to this. It just kind of looks bad. If the chibi style was similar to Link's Awakening, I would most likely have been onboard but as of now... a very hard pass on this pathetic cash grab. Arceus game looks fine but also seems like a dated attempt to finally make Pokemon an open world adventure.
@Northwind People disliked Sword and Shield for those low quality textures, not beucase of the graphic style. Characters and Pokemon looked fine, the grass, the water looked fine, it was trees, some objects and the plain terrain that lacked some decent texture. The graphic was actualy really good.
It’s fine. The battles look ugly
I don;t expect much from GF. They have shown themselves to be a one trick pony developer that barely does that one trick competently. I understand what they were trying to achieve with this "chibi" art style(it isn't really chibi, though), but it just comes off as being the cheapest way they found to do these games. They wanted to remake the games as cheaply as possible and it shows. Not a fan.
@BenAV Yeah. Like those cartidges are only USD$5 everywhere.
Good if you already own them. But if you don't, they are usually around and above USD$60.

https://www.pricecharting.com/es/game/nintendo-ds/pokemon-diamond
Also, you need to buy a DS or 3DS if you don't have it already.
@I-U Honestly that's the thing. Like, thinking about it a lot of people compared to the ORAS remake but one thing I recall of those remake was the sheer amount of stuff apparently changed/removed from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, in particular when it came to stuff like Battle Resort(?) and so on. Plus it could tie very nicely with the fact Diamond/Pearl date back to the era of utility moves and the almost metroidvania-style progression/paths/secret unlocked by new utility moves(something that was present in Sword & Shield only in the most technical of sense with how small and linear Galar was). In that regard, the chibi style keeping further the traditional layout of the original games will be that much more of a boon.
These games however give me the odd feel that they might end up very close to the original Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games. Like... perhaps I could be wrong but these remakes don't seem like they feel to need to make a point to tie-in with the latest titles' gimmicks as I'm seeing no hints of either Gigantamax or Mega Evolution which feels like it could make for refreshingly traditional battling gameplay for the first time in a long while(which is to say... probably for the first time since Gen5 considering the introduction of Mega Evolution in Gen6 and the follow-up with Z-Move in Gen7 before Gen8 removed both only to add Dynamax/Gigantamax).
As gimmicks, I guess these are "nice" but a -proper-(unlike ORAS which tackled Mega-Evolutions into it's remake of Ruby/Sapphire) remake that lets us use our pokemons without all these special abilities/moves/etc will be nice.
And I mean, it's been long enough since those titles that we're reaching the point where a Pokemon game WITHOUT gimmick could be considered "fresh" now.
@Zadaris Sadly I feel sprites is unlikely to happen outside of very specific titles(like Octopath) or indie franchises. Pokemon now being established with 3D graphics, I don't see them going anytime back to sprites short of a virtual console collection-style deal.
For one, the fact is sprites have stopped being mainstream for so long, I fear that only the more aged fans of pokemons games would appreciate sprites at all anymore.
But the franchise always aimed the younger generations... and that's the thing; if 12, even 15, years old kids these days had to choose between the Diamond/Pearl remakes we were seen and a sprite based ones...
... they'd take the current remakes teased in the Direct over the sprites-based game anytime.
On the plus side of things, the studio in charge of the Diamond & Pearl remake is literally the folks in charge of developing Pokemon HOME so I feel like those remakes' support for HOME might as well be nigh-guaranteed(wouldn't even be unsurprised if they indeed brought back the full nationaldex for that title since they're using a graphics style for the overworld that should be much less of a workload in terms of assets beyond make sure the layout is a faithful representation of the original games' layouts).
I've played the original version on the DS, its the first ever Pokemon game that i completed catching all the Pokemons. My favourite main Pokemon was Dialga, i went through the game smoothly with Dialga. I was excited when i heard the announcement of the remake. Everything was fine until the trailer dropped, very dissapointed on how cheap the graphics looks, was hoping for something much nicer like A Links awakening.
I came into this presentation thinking "Well I skipped this generation and now I'll finally play it through the remakes" but when the trailer started I immediately pivoted to "Nope, I'm out!"
But I'm super excited to finally meet Sinnoh in Legends, count me all the way in that one
@DoubleDate It does look a bit cheaper than Link's Awakening but not that badly after looking at trailers again a bit. I think I'll manage.
With a close look, you can notice they REALLY wanted to pay attention to a faithful recreation of the layout of the original DS game. Even the chibis seem like they specifically try to keep close to the proportions of the 2D sprites of the original in particular.
I feel that bit might be important because ORAS was somewhat infamous not for how close it stuck to Ruby/Sapphire but specifically what it changed from those titles in terms of areas/etc if I recall well.
Whereas with these remakes I get a weird feeling we might get a much more accurate remake of the original's gameplays/features than something like ORAS did. Plus it's being made specifically by the Pokemon HOME team so support for transfer might be nigh-guaranteed if not outright the return of the full national dex(especially with the conscious choice to keep a less work-intensive visual style for overworld assets which should free up more character/monsters 3D artists to model out and provide battle animations for missing national dex pokemons).
@Ludovsky
Its the whole chibi thing that trows me off. With Links awakening we are suited to it due to how toon Link looks like in the Windwaker. With Pokemon its a whole different story, it looks like one of those Final Fantasy games with those big heads that were released on the 3DS.
The open world Pokemon looks promising and i for sure will get it.
@DoubleDate Honestly it's not so bad, especially with battles reverting to more traditional style.
I would say however it does REALLY look better in movement(especially stuff where you can also see movement of light and shadows play off, such as that scene with the electric windmills and the shade they cast as they turn) than it does in still screenshots.
The original game looked better than this.
I would prefer that it wasn't chibi style, but it is very cute. I'll definitely be getting it.
I think it would look kinda cute for a kids and casual players, but I'm personally not interested.
I'm indifferent overall. Don't really care one way or the other.
It wouldn't bother me if they bothered to give the characters outlines, and shorter arms.
It started to grow on me I must say however I also get the feeling they could have done more with it.
The one thing I really hope is they don't have HMs.. There were alot of them in this game.
@Anti-Matter I think I just figured out what I don't like about the art style of the remake (interestingly because yours doesn't have it) it's mostly the hands and feet being too big. it makes them look less like they're compressed to fit within the grid and more like they're toddlers or those super hero toys for 3yo kids to prevent choking. in the end I'm probably going to buy them barring some unexpected issue (like bad performance or slow saves) because the overworld sprites don't bother me much, but I would prefer a slight change
@x2brute
I think the Chibi style for Sinnoh remakes looks like My Sims games since i played those games a lot.
Anybody see the final fantasy vii remake ever crisis chibi style graphics that's coming out on ios and Android. Yeah if it looked similar to that with the Link's Awakening polish it could amazing. They still have time though, if there interested in making it one of a kind.
pokemon no longer care lol they are here to steal your money
Cash grab plain and simple, I won't be buying it anyway
Personally I don't love the art style. I think it's OK and definitely matches the sizing and scale of the older games though, which I do like. Other people have said it looks like a cheap mobile game, but I haven't really seen anything that looks like that...then again I don't really game on my phone aside from really simple, bite-sized games here and there if I'm bored. I do agree with a bunch of other users that posted, that a style similar to the Link's Awakening remake would have lent itself really well to these games. That feeling that you're sort of looking down at a toy diorama as you move your character around was pretty nice. It was a fresh stylistic take on a game which the original graphics were I think 8-bit at the time?
Personally I don't think the style they chose for ORAS lent itself well to the spirit and style of the original games, and I can't seem to get in to it the same way I did the originals. Granted I played those 14+ years ago, but I was even able to get in to Sun/Moon more than I am to ORAS. I think a style more similar to this could have been better for those remakes. Also, For some reason, exploring every nook and cranny in the newer games just isn't as much fun as it was before X/Y. I think it might have to do with the worlds and how everything is scaled up and has to be bigger to match the style, and, because of this, there's a lot less concentration of interesting things to look at.
And obviously Legends Arceus looks significantly better, as it's a new title and not a remake. That being said, they look like they're trying to shake up the pokemon formula a little bit and move towards a more open-world concept. The more impressive (but not fantastic) visuals match that type of game much better than the styles they landed on for the dp remakes, and vise versa.
Overall, the graphics for these remakes aren't stunning by any means. They're mediocre, and that's OK with me because I don't really play any nintendo games for the graphics. I play them for the gameplay. I think differing the remakes/classics graphically compared to new releases is a really good idea and assuming they continually improve both, it could serve the pokemon company well. Imagine if we got a fresh, new, fully 3D open-world pokemon every few years, and in between got things like Arceus and a more classic, new, 2-d styled game, or a 2-d remake til they run out of them? I'm not thrilled about the style, no, but it is definitely at least interesting to see them trying new/different things. Every title released from x/y to now has looked virtually indistinguishable from one another. It's at the minimum at least interesting to see something different being done.
I loved Diamond, so I'll probably end up getting at least that one. I'm also a collector though, and you'd best bet if there's a combo pack with a steelbook case or something like that, I'm gonna get both. I'm not the biggest pokemon fan on the planet, but I enjoy them enough and I look forward to seeing how the series progresses in the future.
A chibi style could be great for remakes of the old games, but the particular way they executed it looks ugly to me.
The original DS versions actually look quite beautiful. Combining pixel art sprites with 3D environments was a good fit for the DS.
I love it, they look so ADORABLE!! 😍
I had complete absolute zero interest in buying this remake, but the art style sold it for me, i need this game! 🥰
Looks terrible. I wasn't planning on picking up the remake. Now I will not be picking up the remakes for sure.
Let's Go style, HD original, and likely several other options would have looked far better.
I like it. Generation 4 went for a more realistic art style than generation 3, and I wasn't a fan at all. Particularly with a spin-off handled by a studio known for mobile games to buy time and dev resources for legends, I'm all for it. Heck, maybe this'll give us a mobile port with cross-platform play. I'd be for that too.
I like the chibi style art. It fits perfectly with the atmosphere
it's not about the art style itself, it's about the execution of said art style. the textures are muddy and the lighting is weird. It looks like / worse than a mobile game and it looks cheap.
they really did gen 4 dirty.
I actually voted for hoping it looked like New Pokemon Snap. I think that art style would pop most for my eyes and make me pretty excited to play the remake, though I know remaking an entire region in that style would be pretty challenging.
I like it all apart from the overworld chibi character designs. Just looks a bit tacky to me. Each to their own though and still really looking forward to all that was announced
Lol, pokemon has been a "chibi style" since day one, until gen 6. This just has a fresh lick of paint on that classic look. Guess people will always have something to complain about though 🤷♂️
Out of all the pokemon games I've played in the main series, diamond and pearl was one of the few I skipped over. None of the pokemon designs really struck out at me and I wasn't into pokemon as much during that period.
So, through the eyes of someone who has no nostalgic emotions over this generation, I think the style they went for is perfectly fine. I like that they tried to make everything with a 1:1 ratio to the originals which I think was a big worry for a lot of people. From what I've seen online, there are two main groups of people: the people who wanted a faithful recreation of what they deem as the best game in the main series, and the people who wanted it to look like sword and shield. Looking through the perspective of the pokemon company, they were most likely trying to cater to the group that wanted a faithful recreation as well as those who didn't get a chance to play the originals, hence why they look like the originals.
Where it all's falls apart however, is with the overworld characters. Because they were going for a 1:1 ratio with smoother looks, it looks very cheap and off-putting; they look like gogo crazy bones figures. It becomes even more apparent when you start to compare it with the remake to Link's Awakening, which has a very similar art style yet looks so much more lively.
If it was up to me, I would've went one of two direction's: either release it as how it looked on the DS, allowing new and old fans to experience it on the switch without changing what made the original so loved, or give it an Octopath Traveler kind of treatment with nice lighting and particle effects while adding new detailed animations to the characters and pokemon. I really believe that pokemon was at it's height when it stuck with it's simple pixelated look. It didn't have the super high fidelity of big releases, but I really enjoyed it's simplicity and letting the player fill in the blanks (I would even argue the old 2d sprites had more life in them than the new 3d models).
In summary, I'm happy the pokemon company is keeping the top down perspective look, I just think this new coat of paint was completely unnecessary, especially given how it would still sell well since at the end of the day, it's still pokemon.
idk why people don't like it and want like sword and shield because I'd hate it if it ends up like that i like the look there going for it stays true to the original diamond was my favorite pokemon I've been dying for them to put it on switch pretty much exactly like the original just better graphics which they've done stop trying to ruin things for true pokemon fans and idc if you agree with me or not
To me, BD/SP is more faithful to sinnoh because, if you haven't played D/P/Emerald, the overworld sprites look similar, as well as the transition to busts of the human sprites when a battle starts. It captures the original game's spirit!
I like the battle graphics, just not the overworld graphics.
@Altina
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for giving studios the chance to make games, it just seems like a big leap from no games to one of the most anticipated remakes for a franchise as large as pokemon.
I have some experience here in that the small company I work for has worked on several games for larger companies over the years. Every single time we've created a sub-par game. So on the one hand, for me, it's been fun to work on those big games. But from the perspectives of the IP owner and the fans, a more experienced company could always do better.
So it's not that I begrudge them the opportunity, I'm excited to see what they do with it, I just find it a big leap.
I prefer 2d sprite artstyle but the only thing I really dislike about this is the characters. The rest is pretty good, although I'd almost prefer if it was gridbased over full 360 the walking is unnatural. Will say I am very glad it's not Sword and Shield's artsyles
They should've called it Lets Go, Chibi!
@superguy123 It is NOT what we wanted
Every remake before this one was a real modernised take on the old games with whatever the latest engine styles were
The original looks way better than these cheap plastic graphics. If they had at least had the same toon shading as SwSh then it would've at least not looked like ass. The chibi style isn't even the problem.
We don't need an "as faithful to the original games" sort of remake when the original still looks amazing
They should've upped the ante with the styles they chose to use big time
I tried to like it since it was announced but this is a garbage move
@PocketQ3 That's what I'm saying. Every remake up until this point, even the Let's Go games, was modernized to the current generation. Just making these games in the art style of the Let's Go games would've been fine, but these just look unappealing at current.
"What i expected ?"
-Is more kinda like "Pokemon Lets Go" Where you get a Full size body, it doesn't need to be First Person viewing angle, but more like wide viewing angle, so players could enjoy their surroundings, the mountains, the Forest. Or let the player Adjust their own preferance viewing angle (allowing to zoom in or zoom out, rotating camera, 360 viewing angle)
"Do I like Chibi artstyle ?"
-It really doesn't bother me, its a bit Unproportional (Head:Body Ratio) and you could make the body size a little bit bigger & the limbs a bit longer (like Nar*to SD). From a Battle standpoint, the characters need a bit more outline, more natural movement, more emotion and Facial Expression.... other than that its all good
"What can be improve from the Artstyle"
If the Final product is the same as the Trailer, I hope there will be more Expression to the characters matching the Dialogues in a cute way (Cartoony way, not the SWSH or Sun & Moon way)
"About the Game itself"
To me Sinnoh Region itself is determine by these 5 main factors
1. The Pokemon itself (go Platinum dex)
2. The music (Subtle change while maintain its Originality, both Night & Day)
3. Underground Experience
4. Battle Frontier (Platinum BF will be better)
5. Global Trade Center (on previous DPPt game this feature is not fully Optimize, because of Hardware & Software limited, now with a more compatible and stronger device i hope it can reach its full potential)
As long as these 5 Factors available, i don't think the graphics will be an inssues
"Things that can be Improved ?"
-"Improve Gameplay" (Faster movement speed specially for both surf & waterfall)
-"Mud Stuck" (Make it less Tile, stuck once or twice its fine, but stuck all the time will result a broken joy cons)
-"TV utilization" (Previous DPPt we only read dialogues, this time We could see what is actually happening in the TV, there's animation in it whether its an Interview, News Flash, Swarm pokemon, Weather forecast, or just Random adds we can watch their animation inside the TV)
-"No More HM" (instead go for Pokemon capability so the Flying pokemon can "Fly" while Machoke can't, but could do both Rock "Smash" and "Strength"
There's so much Improvement can be made in this game, so don't rush it, and take your time, if you need more time, go for it.... Its okay to be late, We're fine with it. Waiting for another 1-2 years.... Is better than having your Childhood memory and Gaming experience Ruined in a 12 Hour of gameplay....
"So Please take just your time !!" 😁😁
@Dezzy well it wasn't final footage from the game. They probably would polish up the graphics a bit.
@Ralizah
I know it's 2 months old, but Diamond and Pearl were on DS
