A new report from Bloomberg claims Nintendo is gearing up for "record software and Switch sales" this year, which obviously leads into the next fiscal year for the company.
The surge in sales will supposedly come from the release of the rumoured new model system featuring an OLED display. This is all according to component suppliers, software publishers and retailers.
Speaking anonymously, partners and suppliers have also said a number of "marquee game releases" will push software sales in the next fiscal year (ending March 2022) to 250 million, which is a big leap from the 205 million units forecast for this year.
"Some of the suppliers have been briefed while other partners established their own forecasts based on orders."
Bloomberg goes on to state how most of Nintendo's software lineup for this year has still not been announced. This is interesting to hear, considering the company already has a number of releases planned right up until July.
"Much of this year’s lineup of new games remains unannounced."
According to the same sources, the challenges for Nintendo will be the same as its rivals - a shortage of tech and components.
"Beyond securing silicon from the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the Switch maker also faces scarcity of more generic parts like display driver integrated circuits and Bluetooth modules, people familiar with its operations said.
Adding to this, last week it was revealed Nvidia could be stopping production of the Tegra X1 Mariko "system on a chip" that powers both the Switch and Switch Lite.
What do you make of all this? What other games would you like to see announced for the coming fiscal year? Leave your thoughts down below.

Gee, I wonder if there was some sort of event recently where they could have announced all those unannounced games.
Prediction:
1. Shortly after their new fiscal year starts in April, Nintendo will announce an updated Switch model (maybe two) that will be available later in the year. The updated model will have a better screen, new processor, and other improvements.
2. Breath of the Wild 2 will be their holiday release.
3. We'll get one other big release before that (Bayonetta 3 maybe? Mario Kart 9?)
4. Madden and Call of Duty will bring over versions of their games to the Switch for the first time (not that many people will care.)
To be fair I think the start of the year Nintendo Direct was just a sign of more Directs to follow, I wouldn't be surprised if we get one in April showcasing one big game to release in Summer plus announcing some neat Zelda stuff.
The lack of recent announcements may have been a little disheartening but I doubt Nintendo is planning to leave this year feeling empty with the massive momentum they will pick up when Monster Hunter: Rise comes out.
That game will be massive in both Japan and the West.
It's always funny seeing people carrying on about the release schedule as if we know everything that's releasing this year when we're only half way through March. It was pretty obvious during the Direct that they're holding back announcements for later in the year till we get closer. No need to reveal all their cards in February.
Monster Hunter Rise might not be a first party exclusive, but it's a high quality AAA Switch exclusive nonetheless.
BOTW2 is in no way coming this year. The fact that they had to make a formal announcement stating they weren't ready to give any information for the game yet shows it still has a lot of work to be done. The same reason why Bayonetta 3's been so silent each year.
More games more fun bring it on nintendo!
I just hope they keep all these “unannounced” releases for their fiscal year spread out so we don’t just get a lot at once.
Let's hope this is correct, Monster Hunter just isn't my type of game. Give me more Fire Emblem, Metroid, F-Zero, Pikmin etc and less ports please!
Bloomberg really seems to have the inside track on Nintendo.
Wii Sports Club, Project Cars 2, Dungeon Defenders Awakened, Madden and Ring King.
I'm waiting for proper Cartoonish Boxing / Kickboxing games (NO Punch Out, HELL NO to UFC / MMA) on Nintendo Switch.
Yes, “much” as in August thru next March , they’re talking fiscal year right? So there’s plenty of that left..
@Anti-Matter
Ring King! Old school boxing from NES days.
Throw enough rumors at the wall and eventually one is gonna be right. I don't buy that any of the so-called industry insiders actually have any credible info.
That said, there's little reason for Nintendo to not gear up production, seeing how even after several years the system still regularly is sold out.
Just looking at Nintendo's history they've released hardware revisions/updates of most of their devices. It's a fair assumption that we will get some kind of update for the Switch at some point.
Looking at those historic updates, one should keep their expectations in check. They are generally minor revisions and updates, not major upgrades or overhauls.
My prediction is that Nintendo will release updated versions of the Switch because supposedly Nvidia is ending production of the current chip the system uses. The revision will be using a newer chip - but one in a similar price range with only a small increase in power. The revision will be made (hopefully in my opinion) to remain compatible with all current Switch games and official accessories. There may be some new games restricted to the new unit but most will not be.
If you're out there expecting a home console variation of the Switch that drops portable entirely and is way more powerful - I think you should just stop getting your hopes up. Even though we got the Switch Lite, I think Nintendo got away with that only because it's a budget device and there is little to no direct competition for dedicated portable gaming devices. Nintendo is not going to suddenly try and compete directly with PS5 and XboxX by releasing a home console version of the Switch.
I do think a revised Switch is likely to have a nicer and newer screen, probably either more internal storage or a second SD card slot and a better battery. Though I seriously doubt it will natively support anything better than 1080p docked and 720p portable.
However I do think it's possible they might release a dock with image upscaling technology of some sort to make the Switch more compatible with 4K TVs which have increasingly become the norm.
@Varkster More likely at the digital E3 than in April, don't you think?
@Bengals76
I want something like K-1 PS2 + Street Fighter Alpha series style in term of gameplay and movement inside the ring but with Chibi cartoonish graphic like Animal Boxing or better.
I will buy Chibi cartoonish Boxing games like my drawings.
Just throw me a bone on Shin Megami Tensei V, Nintendo. Or Atlus. Whoever. I physically need to know more.
It says this financial year, so Zelda could be next March.
You know... all that talk about unannounced games that will really sell, and sales forecasts, I've heard that before. While it could be true, it sounds like investor speak. Investors that like to add hype as part of their speculating market interests, but it's not gamers talking. We've seen some periods of big name average games. We've seen Metroid 4, BOTW 2 get pushed back indefinitely for the past 2 years.
I'm not going to get excited until I see what these games are. There's a decent chance that this years games aren't the AAA nintendo games eveyone dreams of. It's not going to be Mario Odyssey 2. BOTW2 and Metroid could be 2022, for all we know. After a year of pandemic disappointments, Im not getting my hopes up too high. But, I welcome a AAA blockbuster, if it happens, and hopefully it's a genre I like.
@Strumpan I think E3 is a little too close to be announcing a summer title, honestly. Nintendo like to reveal stuff in April or May and then spend a segment on it at the E3.
I think they did that with a few games so far, not to mention I dont feel Nintendo's E3 presentations nowadays are much stronger with announcements than their normal Directs, they tend to spread them out.
@patbacknitro18 That's not a good sign, but they said before the direct that they'd be focussing on the first half of the year and we don't yet have a holiday title named. And a game we actually know about is always a better bet than one we don't. With E3 coming up, it's still too early to count it out.
It’s almost as if people forget most big game announcements come during E3 season...and that e3 is happening this year albeit digitally../
I'm actually beginning to think the Switch will outsell the PS2 eventually. It's amazing how successful it is (and deserved tbh.)
Not sure Bloomberg are entirely correct (obviously). Let's wait and see what happens.
We know what’s coming through July so I don’t expect any major announcements until the typical E3 time when most of the holiday lineup will be revealed (gotta save a couple surprises for the fall) and a Switch Pro announcement a few weeks later.
@Strumpan Maybe around E3 time, but not actually at E3. It would be silly of Nintendo to pay the ESA thousands of dollars for a digital event when they have their own platform already.
@patbacknitro18 Maybe they just wanted to focus on Skyward Sword HD? They will probably leave any Breath of the Wild 2 info for the E3 direct or a Zelda Anniversary direct.
“Much of this year’s lineup of new games remains unannounced."
Rude awakening incoming I’m seeing another year of Q4 2008 Wii, it’s an understatement how complacent they are being, we aren’t even getting the smaller games everyone expected we’d be getting due to the console/handheld convergence, they haven’t done anything that’s the equivalent of Dillon or Pusmo despite having a eshop that people actually care about now.
If Switch Pro exists so what 90% of the stock will be devoured by scalpers and Nintendo internally will be cheering them on. You might as well consider it as actually not launching until next year.
@30anonymunchy35
It’s best to keep that game as far away from Botw as possible, they use PR spin to act like that game was the spiritual prequel to Botw but it gets blown apart when you show both games together, the only way this works is if Botw 2 has highly linear gameplay and an endless barrage of cutscenes and NPCs nagging you, Nintendo is in complacently mode and Aonuma has a chip on his shoulder about SS so this could happen.
Hard to grasp that Nintendo's partner(s) expects them to ship a quarter of a billion copies of software next fiscal year, especially given that Nintendo doesn't track the sales of digital-only games.
That's more than the lifetime software sales of the N64.
@patbacknitro18 you ain’t getting botw2 details and release date yet for the same reason you didn’t get details on the new Switch model yet. Nintendo wants to make sure its Mario Edition Switch sells units before putting out the more desirable upgrade.
Nintendo wants to make sure Skyward Sword sell mass quantities. We will hear about botw2 a couple months after SS starts selling.
Yet again, the "news" tag applied for a grand paragraph before trainwrecking into "speaking anonymously...". Don't you guys have "rumour" tags at least? At least it would contribute a bit against looking clownish every time Bloomberg gleefully opts to.🙄
But only so much to expect from a FANblog, I suppose.
Makes perfect sense if not a totally obvious article, of course Nintendo want to sell as many Switch consoles as possible, and with a mid generation revision this could boost the already stellar year performance even further.
The initial Direct was pretty much a recap of titles we knew about and needed some more information on, and also to remind people these games are still coming, of course they threw a few surprises in, but on the whole it was exactly what they said it would be, it's only certain people getting over excited and chucking wish lists about.
Another reason was to demonstrate proper directs are now possible again, so no doubt there will be more to come.
@kingbk pie in the sky
Please let there be more games this year than last year. Last year was kind of bad.
"Bloomberg goes on to state how most of Nintendo's software lineup for this year has still not been announced."
I'll believe it when I see it. Even if it were true, it will probably be more ports. I am kind of done giving Nintendo the benefit of the doubt when it comes to making new games.
Water is wet, more news at nine
These Bloomberg type posts are such clickbait. ‘People familiair with the matter’ ....
New unannounced games like - more nes classics, dlc for animal crossing and more unknown characters for smash. Perhaps we'll get arms 2 or another crossbow training and a bit of labo. Im not expecting anything exciting from Nintendo for a year or two.
Nintendo seriously needs to have some Cease and Desist from rumored sources trying to leak information that is confidental.
At this rate, its just a rumor.
Switch with 100/110 milions consoles sold with Animal Crossing New Horizons as the best selling Switch game in march 2022?
Nintendo must have a big holiday title for Switch or game, if they believe Switch is gonna have record sales this fiscal year, Pokémon Brilant Diamond e Shining Pearl, maybe not enought for Nintendo to reach this milestone, they might need to release on Switch Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Super Mario Odyssey 2 or a brand new 3D Mario, or a potencial Mario Kart 9 to reach this milestone.
A new console and a new Mario game, maybe the all new Super Mario N64 game in 4k.
If it wasn't for covid I think we would have this last year, what we did get seemed rushed and pushed out to fill the gap.
Nintendo is on a legendary run right now - if they pull off the more powerful revision in the right way Switch will become the best selling platform ever.
@Anti-Matter I think those kind of drawings are best saved for the caravan!
@Euler we already know what is Switch 2021 holiday title, Pokémon Brilant Diamond e Shining Pearl, i don't expect Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 to release in 2021, Nintendo is not stupid to canibalize the sales of Pokémon Brilant Diamond e Shining Pearl, with this higly antecipated game, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 possibly is releasing in 2022.
@Dethmunk With the exception of 2020, the vast majority of full year's lineup is generally revealed by the end of March. The only surprise after January 2017 for 2017 was Mario + Rabbids, the only surprises after March 2018 for 2018 were Let's Go and Super Mario Party, the only surprise after February 2019 for 2019 was Super Kirby Clash.
As for your specific examples:
Still, the fact the February 2021 Direct only revealed up to August (No More Heroes III takes the Astral Chain spot) makes it very clear that Nintendo plans to reveal the fall/holiday lineup outside of the Sinnoh remakes around June/July unless new hardware reveal happens earlier.
@SeeEmilyPlay Odd question: are you a fan of Syd Barratt?
@altina
Triggered quite easily aren't you. lol.
@dugan I am 🙂
The optimism around here is staggering.
@GrailUK The matchup of the ages: PS2's DVD player Vs Switch's Hybridity (yes, that's a word!)
I’m pretty content with the year as it is so far but I know I’m the minority here. I just have a lot of nostalgia for Pokémon Snap and I’ve been a huge Mario Golf fan for so long that those two niche spin-offs actually have me super hyped. I’m also a sucker for more traditional-style Pokémon games so Shining Pearl seems like a nice trip to the past despite it’s safer nature as a remake.
Obviously I hope we get another big game or two for the fall/holiday season. Perhaps Metroid Prime Trilogy? Another 2D Metroid? A new Kirby? Super Mario Party 2? Or if we’re really lucky, maybe something like a new Mario platformer or Kart 9... trying not to shoot my expectations that high, though.
So we now have to buy more consoles to pad their greedy pockets, but they won't tell us the games that are being released. So anti-consumer.
@kingbk And at that moment, you woke up?
Yeah right, they'll get good sales but the only unannounced games we'll get will be old ports of games already available on other systems.
Because those are still games and many have yet to be announced so technically, they are completely right.
Nintendo have always been good with their wording and the shills here will lick it up like it's the last drops of custard left in the world.
Their sales have been pretty good for it seems like eternity so even if they don't have any big announcements I think it would make sense to prepare for big sales. I'm still hopeful for some new big Nintendo games, though!
I had a dream about Miyamoto, I asked him about F-zero and he replied that they are developing a new controller called "knight controller" that was perfect for the franchise. If it comes true you did read it here first xD
@WindwakerHD83 Hmm... It's interesting, that whenever someone is saying something someone doesn't like it's automatically "salty" or "triggered" or something like this. Also, how am I the "triggered" one when I'm talking about how I don't understand when people are angry about videogames, instead of playing something else, perhaps, something they enjoy?
Please don't blame your inability of having a conversation on me. Thank you.
@Heavyarms55 "If you're out there expecting a home console variation of the Switch"
Well I'm glad somebody has been reading all of my posts. Though I've kind of moved on from SwitchTV to SwitchDS clamshell w/ dual screens. SwitchTV doesn't need the OLED screens. Though it could still happen, if they can make a $200 Lite they could make a $200 SwitchTV w/ a Pro. I'd buy 1. But it's almost too obvious and easy, and Nintendo only seems to like the unexpected. But something is coming. Switch is 4 years old now, getting a bit long in the tooth.
@Grumblevolcano "Still, the fact the February 2021 Direct only revealed up to August"
And Splatoon 3 in 2022. Which would mean theoretically at least that they could have mentioned this year's holiday games. Also theoretically speaking if Splatoon can have 3 games since 2015 - S1, S2 and S3 in 2022 - MK should be able to get 2 games since 2014 when MK8 released. And new K game on Switch - presumably MK9 for arguments sake - would be able to be resold as MK9 4k on Switch 2. All new Switch games could probably be sold that way, though as a Wii U owner it sometimes feels like there are no new Switch games, just Wii U ports. Switch 2 will hopefully play the same Switch carts but I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to SELL 4k versions just the same, make Switch 2 b/c but not free upgrades to 4k.
@altina A bit salty today are we?
No problem.
@WindwakerHD83 If the 83 in your name stands for your birthyear I feel kinda sorry for the people around you. Would expect a bit more maturity of someone who is the late 30s. And you didn't explain how I'm the triggered/salty one when others are angry (such a very negative AND pointless thing to do. Why would you waste your time with that?) about games, instead of playing something else. There are games for everyone these days. No reason to waste time with being angry about something that others like but isn't for you. How is that about me? How do I earn the blame here?
@Giancarlothomaz Their last Pokémon remake came out a month before Smash Ultimate. Both still sold very well.
@Euler well remembered, maybe there still hope for Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 coming this Holiday season.
@altina
" (such a very negative AND pointless thing to do. Why would you waste your time with that?)"
Yet here you are pandering for a reply. If you really want to know, I said you were triggered because you replied to somebody's negative reply with a "I am greater than thou" tirade. It accused people who don't try certain genres of not doing so because they are racist and superficial, and you then went on about "bewbs" for some reason. That was just in paragraph 1 of 3.
So yeah, I'd say you were triggered.
You also told people who didn't want ports to "GTFO". Being somebody who owns all the Wii U games ported to Switch over its life-cycle on the Wii U, it is clearly disappointing when the game for the summer, (Skyward Sword in this instance) is the only thing to look forward to. Yes, I know its a Wii game. So I can see their gripe with that.
As for pitying the people around me, I'll let them all know a keyboard warrior/activist is thinking of them due to my immaturity online.
Oh, and good deduction skills for spotting that the 83 in my username is my birthyear, Sherlock. You'll appreciate then that I have been reading comments from people that accuse other people of being "ists and phobes" for a long time now and I see them as a sign of immaturity and normally leave them well alone. I fear I have erred in this instance.
Good luck with your future virtual flexing.
Just another reminder that Nintendo haters are always gonna lose.
@gcunit lol I know right. I mean, I thought it would become their best selling hardware, but yeah, I'm now leaning towards it being the best selling ever.
Haven't people learned from last year's experience yet (and the year before that)?
Nintendo didn't reveal everything in the first few months of the year and yet they had one of the best years ever. More software was revealed as the year progressed.
Why are people STILL surprised and proclaiming that the Switch is dead because they didn't announce more good stuff early in the year?
Just a depressed, STILL waiting, SMT fan here...
@rjejr A budget TV only Switch isn't something I had considered honestly. Effectively everyone I have seen calling for the TV only model want it to be in line with at least PS4 and Xbone. And I don't think that's a reasonable hope at all. But a budget device for 150 or 200 with a pro controller? I think that could be very reasonable.
@Heavyarms55 "But a budget device for 150 or 200 with a pro controller? I think that could be very reasonable."
I've always thought $199 based on Switch innards - no dock, no screen, no battery, no Joycon - though a pair of Joycon and the Pro are nearly an even swap $ wise. But it should be a relatively cheap hunk of plastic to produce.
Wouldn't be a big market, but they had the $100 Wii Mini that came in Netflix red but didn't have internet, even though the Wii was the biggest streaming NF console. And they bundled Mario Kart Wii w/ it, arguably the best online Wii game. 🤷♂️
https://www.destructoid.com/stories/wii-is-the-most-popular-console-for-netflix-streaming-207510.phtml
Who knows, maybe call it a Switch Mini instead of Switch TV? Release it as a low cost alternative after Switch 2 (not New Switch or Switch Pro, next gen $400 Switch) launches.
Not saying they will, but it would sell a few, maybe when the Players Select $29.99 line-up of BotW, SMO and SSBU releases. Stick it in a bedroom. Better then spending $90 on a second dock that doesn't work w/ the Lite. 😝
Alot of Nintendo Employees are still spending most their working hours from home. This should be a year of a substantial amount of ports & a few new games.
Between now & Early next year, if we don't get Super Mario RPG, Mario Galaxy 2, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Golden Sun, or Earthbound we will never get them on the Nintendo Switch.
@WindwakerHD83 Oh, so now I believe that I would be something better? Just because I don't understand why people are angry about literally everything these days? And I'm a keyboard warrior? That's especially interesting because I avoid games that have multiplayer, PvP, or any sort of ranking because I hate competing (well aside on Nintendo, but there it's more a "feel good" and "community" thing, and not a "my PP is bigger than yours!!!"-thing.) and the "I'm better than you attitude". I'm not even watching any sports, because I don't care about whoever is the best in whatever. But yeah, whatever makes you happy...
Good job, Sherlock... But what do I expect from someone that's using words like "triggered" and "salty" just because someone said something they didn't like. <shrugs>
And about the ism/phobia thing. You know what? I actually agree with you on that. But the thing is... What Sony Interactive Entertainment, which are Americans, are currently doing with Japanese games and anime... Or how people even on THIS site, about a Japanese console, call every Japanese game "weird crap nobody would buy"... Or how whenever people see an animegirl they whine about sexism while assuming that everyone who likes anime would like to perform sexual acts with her, which is interesting because as a woman myself I would rather consider it sexist that people always analyse the body first whenever they see a female being...
Excuse me... But what else besides racism and tittyphobia could that be? Have better words for that? Then let me know, instead of being a dick torwards me just because you're blind and ignorant on things that aren't about you or things you like.
