Yesterday, 21st February, marked the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, the very first game in one of the industry's most successful, popular, and important series. Despite heavily celebrating Mario's 35th last year with remastered games, merchandise, and more, Nintendo has been surprisingly quiet on the Zelda front, failing to even acknowledge the historic date at all on social media as it passed by. Pretty odd, huh?
So far in this milestone year, the only Zelda news we've had is the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, a remaster of the Wii original for Nintendo Switch (and some lovely Joy-Con to go with it). It's a welcome release for those who may have missed the original, but the game wasn't actually announced as part of any anniversary celebrations – it was likely planned to launch this year regardless.
We're sure big things are coming (Nintendo would be silly to ignore it completely, right?), but while the company remains silent, fans have been taking it upon themselves to celebrate the series in style. We've seen a huge number of posts online honouring the franchise with some spectacular pieces of fan art doing the rounds, so we thought we'd share just a few of our favourites below.
Of course, we've been doing our fair bit of celebrating right here on Nintendo Life, too. If you missed it, make sure to check out our complete ranking of Zelda games from worst to best, as well as the beginning of our new 'Zelda 35th Anniversary' feature series which will fondly look back over each mainline game over the coming weeks.
What Zelda-related things are you hoping to see this year? Will we eventually get the Breath of the Wild 2 news we've all been waiting for? Let us know in the comments.

I played a good long session of Breath of the Wild. I hadn't played in long time, so we can say that was my way of celebrating.
I gimped people with bombs on quick play. I also pre ordered skyward sword
C'mon, do something, even Sakurai acknowledged it!
This is really disheartening on Nintendo’s part but I do wonder if they’re waiting for Mario’s 35th anniversary to be wrapped up at the end of March before they do anything for Zelda.
Once again, Nintendo's PR is baffling.
The Skyward Sword HD announcement sort of counts. Close enough.
@Eel Sameeee
You know, when you boot up Skyward Sword it displays "Zelda 25th Anniversary", guess they'll change that to 35th with this year's HD release.
I beat Majora’s Mask 3D for the first time 2 minutes before midnight!
Before that I spent most of the day watching DeeBeeGeek’s Zelda stream.
@RupeeClock Oh thats Right!, Also when you do the Loftwing Race the call it the 25th annual Loftwing race... I wonder if they will change that too?
There's no reason Nintendo can't still do a stand-alone Zelda 35th Anniversary direct. And it can happen any time this year I'd say. The Mario one also happened in the latter half of the year, so.
i mean, they are clearly still working the mario anniversary marketing campaign, so i wouldnt expect anything until after that at very least. We are obviously not done hearing about zelda this year, aonuma said botw2 info is coming in 2021, so people should just chill. maybe they will do a cool anniversary thing, but would you really actually be upset if they didn't? it really doesn't matter
LoZ is my favorite Nintendo franchise. It's sad to see that they couldn't even drop a tweet about it.
Skyward Sword HD was the anniversary. You expected more? Let's be real, unless it is Mario or Pokemon, Nintendo is not going to acknowledge it.
Of course, if I am wrong, then I am wrong. Heck, there are probably one ot two people who are already thinking that I am premature with my thinking. But I have so little faith in Nintendo at the moment, I expect very little beyond maybe a tweet announcing reprints of amiibo.
@AggressiveCucco
Since that's game script they might keep it the same, but would be interesting to see what they do.
Time to dust off the old crossbow and start training
I don't know if it occurred to anyone, but Nintendo is still focusing on Mario's 35th anniversary. I'm sure we'll hear about Zelda later on this year.
I've seen a reddit post which has for some reason 3.4k upvotes where somebody said that it's a PR disaster that Nintendo didn't mention Zeldas anniversary on Twitter yesterday.
Funniest s**t I've ever read ^^
That guy has clearly no clue what a PR disaster is ^^
@mariomaster96
It's a big missed opportunity to be sure, but a PR disaster? Nah.
Like, they could've done a 35% sale on Zelda games.
@MS7000 they don't even acknowledge pokemon, that's game freaks job
Normal people don't consider the 35th anniversary a big deal. Mario is the outlier here, not Zelda.
@Beatrice To a degree I wonder if it's willful ignorance but rather another of nintendo's habit.
One thing I noted of nintendo is generally they don't seem to like overlaps. Like, a lot of 2017's success very much had to do with how well-paced and apart every releases were.
But in a way right now there ARE a lot of things overlapping.
Not only is Mario's 35th anniversary not over until the 31st of March, there's also the matter of other releases right now.
I was dipping onto all the official nintendo twitters(even the japanese ones) and the most reccuring upcoming releases to be mentioned were this week's Bravely Default 2(which surprised me because Persona 5 Striker also release this week and it's barely mentionned) and Monster Hunter Rise which releases late next month(but before the 31st).
But these two releases have something in common: They're not only third-party releases, but also nintendo-exclusives third party release. Perhaps I'm seeing too much, but considering how focused on PR they are on those two titles, something tells back that Nintendo really doesn't want to jinx it with SquareEnix and Capcom(possibly especially the later after the whole Why-World-never-released-on-Switch deal).
And honestly.... I've beaten BotW1 so many times already so I love it ton, but it's also what tells me that nothing would take the wind out of third-party releases than suddenly revealing MORE Zelda before stuff like Monster Hunter Rise is even out and still gathering pre-orders.
I mean, Skyward Sword is the least liked title of the franchise and it's reveal has already led it to become a pre-orders best-sellers on Amazon despite the fact it's not out until almost summer.
Plus, Mario's anniversary doesn't end until the 31st of March which coincide with fiscal year stuff so Zelda stuff could be indeed be held back for the next fiscal year which'll start this April.
@henrysbloggin this is my guess. Mario 35 goes for another month. I don’t remember, but did Nintendo start the Mario anniversary late as well? These all lead me to believe that there are more Zelda announcements to be made this year.
They celebrated by announcing a port of the game that’s the antithesis of the game that’s celebrating 35 years. Expect Other-M HD before we ever Prime Trilogy HD.
While I’m not a big fan of legend of Zelda, I have played botw. Good game.
@Euler Tbh I think there's a good reason to be a bit disapointed about the lack of announcement. After all, Zelda launched the Switch itself into prominence. It was literally "the" major release at console launch.
But at the same time the Mario anniversary ends on March 31st so I suspect there's possibly fiscal year stuff going on. Like, even Skyward Sword doesn't release until we're almost summer, well after the new fiscal year starts in like April I believe? It could be they're holding back announcements until that next fiscal year is started and after the anticipated, nintendo-exclusive to boot, third-party releases that are coming out at the end of our current fiscal years have passed.
Nintendo's pushing Monster Hunter Rise and as a both a Zelda and Monster Hunter fan I know "more" Zelda on Switch before Rise is out could easily kill the wind in it's sail.
Even Skyward Sword, the least liked Zelda, has basically shot up in amazon best-sellers apparently the moment pre-orders became available. And it doesn't release until we're almost summer as previously said.
@Euler It's becoming clearer and clearer that the 35th anniversary stuff for Mario was Nintendo's way of papering over a thin 1st-party lineup for 2020. I've bought and loved 3D All Stars and SM3DW, but if they're not going to celebrate Zelda in a similar way then there's no hope for the forthcoming anniversaries of their other franchises.
When nintendo remembers Paper Mario's anniversery but not Zelda's
For me I just played link on quickplay in smash and played some windwaker HD
@Ludovsky Lol, you are probably right. Mario 35th ends on the magic day of March 31st. Zelda 35th can start April 1st!!!
Miyamoto really has a favorite child.
If not for Mario 35, I wouldn’t have expected them to. 35th is a weird anniversary to celebrate.
Also, all this fuss over no PR tweet? “Advertise to us please!”
I mean, I get it. I also turned 35 and felt it wasn't nearly as big of a deal worth celebrating as turning 30 was.
As Mario got the all stars N64/GC/Wii game collection they could do the same with Zelda. The Zelda games are also so diverse. Maybe both N64 games, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. This would be the perfect way to bring series highlights on one console along with Skyward Sword. Especially as the NSO service only has NES and SNES games.
Just because they did something for Mario’s 35th Anniversary (which is an odd Anniversary to make a fuss over anyway) doesn’t mean they’ll do it for Zelda or any other franchise. If they do it will just be an excuse to recycle more old games.
Plus you know, this year is the 25th anniversary of Wave Race and the 20th of Pikmin. Not expecting much fanfare for them 😉
@JohnnyC A good point. For a real milestone anniversary (Mario's 30th in 2015), they had a brand new game.
@SalvorHardin And that port, one of the least liked in the franchise, has already shot up into best-sellers list on Amazon.
Meanwhile this month and the next gets not one but two third party nintendo exclusives(something Nintendo has so very little of). Like, Monster Hunter Rise is one of the more recuring title on nintendo twitters accounts that I get the feeling they really want these third parties to do well enough to continue warranting getting... well, more of such.
So I wouldn't be surprised if Zelda announcements, and we have strong hint from the same sources who predicted Paper Mario/3D All-Stars/3D World months in advance that Wind Waker and Twillight Princess are coming this year, were held back to past March 31rst until both stuff like Monster Hunter Rise and the end of Mario's 35th anniversary have come and gone.
Plus considering that the 31st of March coincide with the end of the fiscal year, that could be another factor; keeping the majority of announcements for the next fiscal year when there might be less critical releases in the way anyway?
I mean, more than otherwise Nintendo seem to generally dislike overlapping announcements/releases and instead prefer stuff to be paced more evenly to avoid the risks of big announcements cannibalizing each others. And like said, in the current end of the current fiscal year Nintendo is getting non-negligible third party exclusives from the likes of Square-Enix and Capcom both.
I am pretty sure Nintendo has something planned, but it will be at a later date.
The black guy Link is the best pic, I love the sincerity and authenticity behind it.
NINJA APPROVED
We shouldn’t be shocked that a bunch of old games are having anniversaries. A lot of games have been released over the years. That is how time works.
As for consoles, an article/retrospective on the anniversaries that are a multiple of five years is sufficient.
Nintendo completely disregarded the 30th anniversary of Fire Emblem and only really "celebrated it" with the very first entry of the game that is available for a limited time only.
Imagine if they did the same for Zelda.
@JohnnyC Imo I wonder if there's overlap concerns right now. Like.... Mario's anniversary ending March 31st notably which coincide with fiscal year stuff.
Meanwhile just the least-liked of Zelda being revealed, Skyward Sword, is leading pre-orders of that title already shotting up to top of amazon best-sellers lists apparently despite releasing only in the next fiscal year when we'll almost be summer?
Considering Nintendo's currently having all-too-rare third party exclusives in the form of Bravely Default 2 this week and Monster Hunter Rise just before March ends, there could also be concerns of "trying not to kill the wind out of rare third party nintendo exclusives before they're actually out".
Like, the guy who predicted Paper Mario/3D All-Stars/3D World thanks to his source is already hinting we're getting Wind Waker/Twillight Princess. And WiiU ports or not, those were titles that were VERY loved by the fanbases compared to something like Skyward.
I'm not saying to absolutely expect anything, but I'm keeping an eye out for until around April or so, when stuff like MH Rise will have had some time to get it's expected sales and thus be "safer" before we expect any announcements regarding these and "a few months ago, on February 21st, was the 35th anniversary of Zelda so for this reason the new year is the year of Zelda" or something.
I keep telling people Nintendo isn't going to celebrate it and people keep getting upset at that alone... Can't wait for everyone to realize it's really not happening /s
I guess mario is the favourite son
@Tandy255 It could well be. Not saying it's a certainty but it's definitely on my mind. Especially with the current major third party exclusives that could be obliterated if more Zelda was revealed too early.
Like, seeing how often it pops up on Nintendo's Twitter, I suspect Nintendo really want Monster Hunter Rise to succeed so it doesn't become the last nintendo-exclusive Monster Hunter you know?
@Beatrice At least in Zelda's case, that's just not accurate. If anything, I assume Nintendo is just waiting for a later time to make further announcements.
@gb_nes_gamer We can dream.
Like you said, the Mario 3D collection had one N64, one GC, and one Wii game. You are asking for two N64 games and two Wii U ports. Possible, but not likely.
Personally, I would rather have the N64 games on NSO. Or an N64 mini console.
In theory, the two Wii U ports should be the easiest to port. They could at least sell those as a two-pack (now I am dreaming).
@Henmii Pretty much imo. Might be the reason why Mario's anniversary ends on March 31st considering how it ties into fiscal year stuff. Next fiscal year could be Zelda and if you think about it... with the timing of Skyward Sword's release it's already kind of the case.
Meanwhile we have anticipated stuff like Monster Hunter Rise releasing March 26th and something tells me Nintendo is very much keen on it not being the last nintendo-exclusive monster hunter after it spend all of World's time in the spotlight with only an aged port of Generations Ultimate to tide people over?
Skyward Sword, the least loved Zelda, is already topping some amazon charts with it's pre-order so what could one expect if/when something like Twillight Princess or Wind Waker, actually loved Zelda titles, finally gets confirmed?
They'd probably eclipse anything else in their viscinity.
Meanwhile, I'm waiting for Zelda 35 to be released so we can send Lynels to other players.
@Tandy255 Dunno for a twopacks, but Wind Waker and Twillight Princess are almost already as confirmed as they can be considering the guy who "predicted"(thanks to his sources) Mario 3D World months in advance is telling us to expect at least these two titles.
Considering even Skyward Sword doesn't release until almost next summer, it could be indeed that they're held off for the next fiscal year that doesn't officially start until we're in april.
@Ludovsky Skyward Sword is the least liked Zelda? I've played Skyward Sword and I've played Triforce Heroes, and I must heartily disagree with your assessment. 😁
I understand if people think Nintendo's not gonna celebrate Zelda's 35th at all, but this is probably just a combination of not being ready to announce stuff right away 'cuz of the pandemic throwing a wrench into game development and not wanting to take the wind out of the sails of Super Mario Bros.'s ongoing 35th anniversary celebration.
It's a shame they didn't acknowledge the 35th on social media, but Zelda is still a huge series for Nintendo. We'll see something eventually.
@JohnnyC I meant overal.
And least liked doesn't mean outright DISliked
Just that overall it seem like it's the one that was appreciated less than others even if it still has it's fanbase and appreciators(I still recall plenty of people talking about enjoying the near-"puzzle-fight" nature of the game's motion-controlled swordfighting which still remains unique).
@Ludovsky If they charge $60 for WW HD and TP HD each, I will not be buying them at full price. I suppose it is good for many people that don’t have a Wii U nor the original consoles — but I have them both for WII U.
Again, I know most Switch owners did not buy a Wii U, but a port of a port should not be full Switch game price.
@MetManMas And like... Mario's 35th anniversary might be a concern but just look at Nintendo's twitters: the big things they're announcing the most are Bravely Default 2 and Monster Hunter Rise. The two have two things in common:
-They're third party releases from major publishers(SquareEnix and Capcom)
-They're nintendo-exclusive third-party release from major publishers.
Something tells me the last thing Nintendo wants to tell someone like Capcom, with a franchise like Monster Hunter, is something like "Sorry for taking all the wind out of that super massive exclusive Monster Hunter release you trusted us with, but we absolutely -had- to announce the releases of the games from our own absolutely massive Zelda titles WiiU ports, you know?"
Maybe it's just me but after "Where is MHWorld on Switch?" for so many years, something tells me Nintendo doesn't want Rise to be the last nintendo-exclusive Monster Hunter(to not say the potential last Monster Hunter on a nintendo console at all)?
@Ludovsky,
That Skyward sword hd is so popular might also be because people fear a temporarily release like Mario 3d allstars. But yeah: Twilight princess hd and Windwaker hd on Switch is almost a dead given. And they might have some other anniversary stuff up their sleeves, who knows. Mario had a compo where you could win lots of prices (I didn't win anything, sadly).
Even though l'm leaving the zelda fandom sometime this year. I will still be a fan of the older games. I will celebrate by playing LOZ, SS, and TP...again
I played the 1st Legend of Zelda when I was 5 and was in love. Hands down it remains one of my favorite games, I’ve replayed it dozens of times. As much as I enjoy Mario, I have always preferred Zelda, so it makes me sad Nintendo is so quiet on its 35th anniversary. I would love a LoZ game and watch like the Mario they put out last year.
Nintendo is probably waiting until the Mario anniversary is over to do a LoZ celebration, so no need to despair.
@henrysbloggin mario day is coming up, so it will be soon for 3D All-Stars to end and its anniversary.
@Henmii Yeah. But yeah, they're major announcements so even if timing "should" have been last Sunday... they're also the kind that could have eclipsed and taking the wind out of other stuff Nintendo IS advertising for this week and next month(particularly all too rare third party exclusives like Bravely Default 2 and Monster Hunter Rise)
Well maybe it means we could actually celebrate Metroid this time. On the last anniversary that series was the one that got ignored.
@ObeseChihuahua2 Yeah, plus revealing more important Zelda announcements right now would take all the wind out of Monster Hunter Rise's sails to mention just that title(Bravely Default 2 also release this week and is being brought up almost as often than MR Rise on nintendo twitter accounts.).
And something tells me Nintendo very much doesn't want to give Capcom reasons to make that the last monster hunter on a nintendo console.
@ObeseChihuahua2 That is also what I was thinking
I was surprised, they did not say anything about it during the Direct. Speaking of the Direct. Just for fun, I watched the Japanese version of the Direct. and you would not believe the different games they showed.
first they did not show the border lands game and it was around 10 seconds longer. Konami showed off a baseball game. there were an action fighting game and an RPG, and a train game and other games that were very Japanese themed games. it was still showing the rest of the games that we saw.
and I know there is no region lock, but I do not speak Japenese . so maybe they will have English subs. if you are interested then give it a watch and see if you are anything you like.
I've been playing Breath of The Wild for over a year and kind of just don't want it to stop. Just like one of the writers on this page (Kate i think it was) said and i feel the same way. I hope they'll give us BOTW2 soon, so i can finish the first one and get onto not finishing the second one
At this stage of my fandom, I'm no longer surprised by anything Nintendo does or does not do.
@Ludovsky Yeah, Nintendo likely doesn't want to detract too much attention (and pre-orders) from their big exclusives right now. Just Skyward Sword is fine, but it's best to save any alleged HD collection announcements until at least after Monster Hunter Rise.
MonHun exclusivity on 3DS over the Vita was huge for Nintendo in Japan, and now that the series is successful elsewhere after Monster Hunter World I'm sure both Nintendo and Capcom want Monster Hunter Rise to be a hit. I mean, they're changing their online infrastructure to better work with games like this.
Nintendo, you have 2 legendary franchises with anniversaries this year. Zelda and Metroid. Yoohoo Nintendo, try to celebrate BOTH of them. (Cough, don't ignore Metroid).
Do they ever celebrate the event on the actual day though? I'm pretty sure most of the 25th anniversary events took place on the year leading up to it, and sort of the same with Super Mario Bros 35th anniversary.
Maybe Covid spoiled those plans for them and now they're going to make announcements after the actual day has passed?
Fans will do what Nintenwont.
Same with Metroid.
They’re waiting for the right time. I think there will be another huge direct later on. Mario 3D All-Stars isn’t even “off the shelves” yet. Lol
Not everything needs to be revealed all at once. Mario's anniversary is still going, Pokemon's is the next focus, then Im sure Zelda will get plenty of the spotlight at some point this year. People just need to learn to be patient, smh.
Nintendo celebrates anniversaries throughout the entire year though. They just announced Skyward Sword, WWHD and TPHD are rumored to be coming to Switch, etc.
Mario's 35th is still going into next month when the Mario update for Animal Crossing comes out.
@electrolite77 I'm so ready for anything Wave Race announcement from Nintendo. I may be in the minority but I loved Blue Storm way more than WR64. Don't get me wrong I was obsessed with WR64 especially since it was one of my first N64 games. To me that game set the bar high and Blue Storm took it even further. Wasn't perfect it could use some tweaks here and there but that game is very high on my list of games I'd love to have a HD whatever of it on Switch.
Back on topic my money is on Nintendo doing something for Zelda after the Mario 35th is officially over. It's just too easy of a way for Nintendo to print money to not do something...then again this is Nintendo after all. They leave so much money on the table all the time even Scrooge McDuck would die of jealousy.
I don't get why people seem to think Nintendo doesn't like Zelda.
@KryptoniteKrunch
I think the point was that they didn't even mention the official anniversary date on social media. Like a quick graphic with a celebratory caption.
In honor of the Zelda 35th anniversary these are the four games I play this past weekend, the CD-i is the PC remastered version.
It is a little odd that there's not even a post about the anniversary. That said, the people crying that Nintendo isn't showing the franchise any love need to calm down. The Switch has gotten BOTW, two Hyrule Warriors, Skyward Sword HD, Cadence of Hyrule, Link's Awakening, and there's almost certainly more ports coming. And BOTW2. As someone who's not into the franchise, it's to the point where I just roll my eyes at the mention of a new Zelda game.
@MetManMas Pretty much. Honestly the more I think about it the more I don't expect to hear about Zelda or the anniversary until April, when the next fiscal year will also have begun as a bonus too.
Monster Hunter Rise succeeding THIS fiscal year is a nice way to cap it off. Don't need to hinder it's chances by talking about stuff that won't be ready until the next fiscal year in April and later.
And that's the thing. It's an anniversary "year", not "day". With release throughout April 2021 and later, they don't have to tie themselves neccessarily to the day.
Mario 3D All-Stars was nicely revealed on September 3rd but it didn't release on that day either, only on the 18th. And in it's case it was almost convenient they could take profit of it's closeness to the anniversary to reveal it that day(any later might have been... awkward, considering stores want those pre-orders themselves to help guide how many copies they need to order to possible fulfill demand).
With Zelda, in hindsight, they have much more leeway on "when" they want to kick things out. When they do they can still reference the February 21 date as the day when 35 years ago the whole thing started. But they can do it in April/etc and it'll still work out because we're still in the "anniversary year" that only began on that day.
@Tandy255 Given the size of the games, an N64 mini is probably the last console of that kind we’ll get and I’d love to see it happen. Both Zelda games would certainly be guaranteed.
This comment section fills me with hope.
If I miss our 35th wedding anniversary I can just reassure the Mrs its fine, the actual date doesn't matter. I apparently have a whole year to sort something out!
@Beatrice and here is a perfect example of that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU2bQPITVKs
Ouch... That sucks as woohoo. Thought they'll announce something like HD collection etc. BIG NOPE. Man, and I was defending them couple days ago after Direct.
Nintendo doesn't tweet on Sundays. Similar how Sunday is NintendoLife's day off from posting.
@thecowgoesmoo87
they will mario 35 goes away after march so they will likely want to sell as much of that as they can before getting hype about another collection id say in may there will be one.
they will likely do a collection but it is important to note that usualy they dont do a collection like mario. most of the time there is just a new game and a special edition console or controller.zelda ifit doesnt happen will be like everything else, mario is the exeption to that
Mario's 35th comes to an end on 31st March. They simply didn't want to overshadow the end of that celebration with 3D World.
April onwards will be Zelda's 35th. Skyward Sword Being the first big release.
I just hope they don't forget Metroid later in the year.
Hoping for Zelda Wind Waker and Twilight HD on Switch. Hoping Nintendo does something grand to recognize it's 35th Anniversary, belated is better than not at all. Come on man!
@ianl579 I have hope it's clever, characterful PR. Free press for the anniversary. Plus a little more because Nintendo are quirky and didn't do anything special on the day. And a load more press when they finally do celebrate Zelda's 35th birthday. Meanwhile, those pre-orders and back-catalogue collections continue to roll in...
There is a reason why Nintendo is ignoring it for now.
Its because of 2 things.
1. Mario's 35th Anniversary isn't over yet.
2. Nintendo wants all Zelda fans to focus on Skyward Sword HD.
Nintendo knows that SS is underrated so they want fans to try it again. If they put like say WW or TP HD, then no one will want Skyward Sword HD and Nintendo doesn't want that.
So its not that Nintendo is ignoring Zelda franchise(they know its the anniversary) but its all due to marketing. They want SS HD to be successful and are planning more content so it will be ready for release in July.
I just don't understand what is happening at NCL these days. It's like they have so little respect for the fans these days. I swear, every time Nintendo is successful they get like this. Arrogant and dismissive. Struggling Nintendo is best Nintendo.
Call it hopeful, but I have a feeling there's a pretty big reason why Nintendo just outright ignored the Zelda 35th Anniversary.
It's because they didn't.
When you think about how they want to market stuff, there's a good chance that they INTENTIONALLY didn't mention anything at all, as if they wanted to have a clean slate to prepare announcements for the anniversary celebration.
@superderper Oh, they should bring the NES Remix games to Switch. That should cover many of the anniversaries.
Zelda gets all the fame, when it's Link who do most of the work/saving the world, life's isn't fair...
Is 35 that big a deal of a number ? Asking for a friend who spent their 35th alone in their pyjamas even before covid made it a thing
I remember people cosplaying for Zelda's 33rd and post pictures online because "3" made them think of the Triforce and swore to give Nintendo execs an awful death because they had not acknowledged that
One reason my optimism for a slew of Zelda games in 2021 is tempered is how increasingly few and far between Nintendo's major first-party titles for Switch have become over the past couple of years (even more so if you take away remasters of legacy games). As the video stated, Nintendo also likely wouldn't want to cannibalize their own sales by releasing two many Zelda games/compilations too close together, and since we're already getting Skyward Sword, I figure it's highly likely that any 35th Anniversary compilations and BotW 2 are an "either/or" for this year. You also obviously need to factor in room for any other IPs that Nintendo plans to release this year. There's only so much room there, looking at it from both a marketing and historical perspective.
Now, one potential development COULD possibly justify a more packed 3rd and 4th quarter than usual: the long-rumored "Switch Pro". Nintendo did learn an important lesson with the launch of the Switch: launching new hardware with at least one "killer app" and overall great software support out of the gate is crucial (this is something that I think may come back to haunt Sony and Microsoft, whose new consoles are both selling very well but which lack any defining, truly landmark, original games thus far). A combination of Switch Pro bundles with, say, BotW 2 and Mario Kart 9/Smash Kart with a bunch of legacy Zelda remasters providing support would make for an insane Christmas season for Nintendo.
As for the angst regarding the lack of a Zelda 35th Anniversary announcement during this Direct, it's important to remember that the Mario 35th Anniversary campaign and games weren't even announced until the back half of 2020. Important dates to keep in mind for potential new revelations of new Zelda projects this year are March 31st (the day the Mario 35th Anniversary campaign ends) and the week of E3 or thereabouts. I figure we'll have a pretty good picture of what's coming for the rest of the year by the end of July or August at the latest.
I Think they are busy wrapping a new trailer for breath of the wild 2 and unleash ports on the switch like with mario.
Are they saving announcements and acknowledgements for a Zelda Direct?
Crazy Nintendo ignores Zeldas 35th anniversary. It’s only one of Nintendo’s big 3 by far one of the better franchises. Should get as much attention as Mario & Pokémon.
I wonder if it could be because of delays in development brought on by the covid situation last year. I've read a lot of games have been slowed/delayed because of new regulations, and the time it took to adapt. So if the games aren't as far along as intended by now, they could just be holding off before announcements.
