The first gameplay trailer has arrived for Toki - an '80s arcade classic set to make its comeback on Nintendo Switch before the end of the year.
Initially released back in 1989, this cult 2D action platformer was known for its challenging difficulty, tasking players with helping a warrior who has turned into a chimpanzee and going on a quest to get used to his new form. The remake of this arcade classic has been completely redrawn and re-orchestrated by Philippe Dessoly and Pierre Adane, the masters behind the original Amiga conversion of the game back in the '90s.

As had already been announced, a 'Retrollector Edition' for the game is set to be released (and will actually arrive slightly before its digital counterpart in Europe) containing extra goodies for anyone looking to treat themselves. Here's what you get inside:
- The box version of the Toki game
- A mini arcade machine with the game’s colours to house the Nintendo Switch screen!
- An exclusive 16-page Toki comic, with an original story illustrated by Philippe Dessoly
- 2 prints
- 1 sticker sheet

The Retrollector Edition will be released on 22nd November in Europe and on 4th December in North America; the digital version of the game will be available worldwide directly from the Switch eShop on 4th December.

Man! I wanted the game already, might have to spring for the retrocollector edition now.
This certainly looks nice.
I remember playing the Mega Drive version as a kid alot so I am looking forward to this remake.
Looking on the Irish Gamestop page it seems the cabinet is different to the one posted above.

EDIT: In fact it seems that there is an extra sticker sheet and extra print also
The animation looks so choppy and stiff. Why does the monkey walk so slow? I was initially interested because the art direction looks nice, but not so much anymore.
I am hoping there will be a toggle for the original visuals / sound (like Wonderboy)
This video requires payment to watch.
@justin233 It is staying true to the original. I remember the mega drive version where he had the same movement speed. Also if he was walking faster then you would die much faster as it is a one hit kill game.
Sätt lucks väri diffikult, jawohl!
The artwork is nice, but I can’t see myself taking the plunge for it. For the fans out there, I hope it turns out well. I’m still dreaming of an Einhander remake/remaster. A perfect Switch game
I've never heard of Toki before (seeing the title I'd assumed that it as a Toki Tori spinoff) but this looks really cool. I love the art direction, and the arcade cabinet is amazing too.
I'm sorry but the original looks and FEELS better...

"Retrollector" - only the French could butcher the English language in such a way.
I'd like to see reviews before its release, but I'm going to preorder it for the cabinet alone. It must work with other games too, despite the fact that the artwork won't match the other games.
I'm glad the delay to December 4th doesn't affect Europe.
I didn't play the original, but I'd also like too see the option to switch between the remake and the original arcade version, which I guess would only work if it was a remake like Wonder Boy, 100% faithful.
But would it be so difficult to just add as an unlockable maybe the arcade version emulated?
The original was looking much better on AMIGA.
Golden gaming ages...
Played it tons on my Atari lynx!
Enough that I recognize the areas all this time later in the video...
... And it is still making me stressed!
So hard!
I think I'll just watch this time around.
Not sure about the clunky movement even if it's staying true to the original. Didn't like it the first time I watched the trailer, then I compared it with the original and it does look quite nice.
I'd only buy this digitally though after checking what reviews are like.
Actually, I'd really like to get hold of the original. Does anyone know anywhere I can buy it legally?
@wazlon you would need to buy the arcade pcb and then work out a way to play it, either with a "supergun" or an actual arcade cabinet
If you are serious about aquiring the pcb go to the website UKVAC and put a wanted thread up
@Nintendolife, your new embeded youtube player SUCKS. requires wayyyyy too many scripts to play properly without endlessly loading. not sure if html5 or what the new embeded youtube player is, but your old one was soooooo much better. i now have to go search your game trailers from your articles on youtube to even watch them. UGH..
I remember being [removed] at this. I also remember playing Twin Worlds on the arcemedes at school
Mind your language - Octane
This has to be the worst sound design/music I've ever experienced in a video game.
The visuals are ok but the sound effects are awful and terribly mixed.
@Cobalt What version of the game is the one on your link?
I played it mostly on Mega Drive, which has nothing to do with the original one. Arcade was terribly difficult considering my "skills" at that time, so I only know the second stage and the ones forward because I've watched YT videos recently
How is this a classic. Never heard of it in my life.
This was a cancelled game on Xbox 360 and PC 9 years ago, and is finally coming back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXmDlhjHKAk
FINALLY
Wasn't the monkey pointing at his butt on the NES version cover?
I can't remember if that was the reason I for some reason chose to get a Famicom cart instead.
The gameplay looks like we had some reverse engineering of the arcade version with just updated visuals. I'm not sure if new graphics are so much better than the original but looks like a faithful port. Its was a prettty good arcade game
Meh I don’t know about this one. The art style looks great but the gameplay looks a bit too arcadey for my taste. Seems kinda stale, imo.
@John_Deacon
The original arcade version. Juju Densetsu !
@Cobalt running at 60 fps with Ryu showing up at the end of the first stage?
@John_Deacon
What ?? you talk about what link because the only one is the one #11
and it's Juju Densetsu... there is no Ryu in that video... o_O
@Cobalt yeah, that is the link. Take a look at 2:07
@John_Deacon
Owww, this is a additional sprite that the youtuber put as an overlay !
This is not in the game my friend !
@Velocirapstar idk man, we Italians can also do pretty great things when it comes to butchering other languages (and English is certainly first in line) 😂
Also, great handle&avatar 😆
@Cobalt Ali right, I know it since the game was released 2 or 3 years before the SF that contained that Sprite. My question is: are there any other alterations or that really is the original game? It runs so fine!
@John_Deacon
This is the original arcade version. ^^
@NintoRich Thanks for the information, I'm not that serious about it. Perhaps I'll have a go at the remake instead.
