Indie video game publisher Modus Games and developer Frozenbyte have signed a deal which will see the former publish Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince on current-gen consoles, including the Nintendo Switch.
Expected next year, Trine 4 will be the latest entry in a series which has shifted 8 million copies to date.
Lauri Hyvärinen, CEO of Frozenbyte, is confident that the wait between Trine 3 and this new instalment will have been worth it:
Trine 4 is going to be the best in the series. We have rekindled our love for the franchise, heard and seen the fan feedback, and our hearts are set on exceeding those expectations. Trine is back!
The original Trine and Trine 2 both launched on the Wii U, but Trine 3 skipped Nintendo formats. Are you looking forward to playing this new entry on your Switch? Let us know with a comment.

Why not give people who haven't played it before a collection of the first three on one cartridge?
I'll be honest, didn't like the others much.
@Bunkerneath that's pretty much guaranteed. They won't be announced until nearer the time though as per the norm with Switch ports of older games
I enjoyed the first two games.
Isn’t Trine 3 also confirmed for Switch?
Port the third game to switch. It's unfair that I've supported 1 and 2 on WiiU and now I have to go directly to 4. Your fans support you, Forzenbyte, don't let us down.
I hate to be pessimistic, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
this is gonna b GREAT!
"We have rekindled our love for the franchise"
Decoded: "We're gettin' PAID."
I really liked Trine on Wii U, but I always seemed to have something else I'd rather play. Good games in general, in my opinion.
@Yasume
There are reports that it was submitted for a rating, but the company hasn't said anything. However, moving the code from mobile to Switch should be a tiny thing so I'd put money on it arriving before #4.
Always get them on Steam Sales for a few bucks.... Never get around to playing them.
Could be a good fit on Switch.
I never played the first one, but Trine 2 on WiiU is excellent fun with three people... it even makes good/proper use of motion controls with Wii-motes and the touchpad on the Gamepad.
Trine 3 looked like a significant departure and I never bought it because Nintendo consoles are the only platforms I ever have more than two controllers for... so I am happy to skip 3.
Hopefully 4 is a good game and properly ported to Switch, with good use of the JoyCon and Pro controller.
Played 1 and 2 and love them. Hear 3 wasn’t as good but I would like to try it on Switch.
I always have felt like these games sold well due to amazing graphics and despite poor gameplay. If the games didn't look so good, I seriously wonder if people would praise them as fun to play.
Got Nine Parchments for Switch for my friend and I to co-op. Frozenbyte makes a beautiful looking and engaging game but I just hope they offer more character, UI, and camera features.
One of the most frustrating issues we had with 9P was the fact the camera was awful and we couldn't access late game features unless we opted for a perma death run...which was impossible with the camera.
@Agramonte
same here. i've played through most of 1 coop but 2-3 i haven't touched (i think i have 3. maybe only 1 and 2).
@BennySatto
FF in that game drives me up the wall. it's repetitive too.
honestly it's not bad coop but fairly blandy mcblanderson.
Well! Back in the trenches you go, guys.
Good to see the lukewarm reactions to Trine 3 hasn't dissuaded them from bringing back the gang.
Trine 1 & 2 were awesome, hopefully they go back to the 2D gameplay that worked so well in those as opposed to the 3D gameplay of Trine 3. And also make sure the story comes to a proper conclusion instead of being clearly unfinished like that game.
But I'm optimistic, they say they learned from their mistakes and the first two games showed they are capable of making a great game, so I think this will be a nice return to form.
Hard pass. The third one was an unfinished insult to players.
I had only play the first two, would be nice to have all the first three for Switch as well and I'm looking forward to this one.
I hope they aren’t Trine too hard with this fourth instalment.
.......... 😕
I enjoyed Trine, but I love 9 Parchments!
Trine was one of my bigger regrets on PS3. No thanks.
Never got the chance to finish it but Trine 2 was rather enjoyable. Great to see that Trine 4 is coming.
Considering 3 wasnt as well received as the others from what I heard, this is quite surprising.
@sketchturner Right, the graphics, and the peanuts prices is what's shifted 8 million copies. I think I've bought all 3 of the series but haven't played more than an hour, and probably paid less than £10 for the lot.
@Bunkerneath I would pay for that! I have the first 2 on Wii U and the third on PC, saved to my desktop HDD for home play and on a SD card with its own label for tablet play. Having all 4 on Switch in gamecard format would justify a double dip.
Finally, a good non-Nintendo platforming series that isn’t 8-bit
I liked Trine 1 and 2. Fun games
Checked out some videos of gameplay on YouTube since I've never heard of the series.. the games look pretty solid. I'll probabaly nabb these when they come out
Enjoyed 1&2 never played 3 ... Gonna skip this one
Give me the first three also!! Great games!
@sword_9mm Yeah, I need to check. I know I have 1 (did not finish it) and 1 more. I think 2.
3 was the 3D one everyone got upset over and they spent 3X as much making it.
Either way, they all make more sense in my head as hand held games.
Nice! Bring on the rest of the trilogy too!
I need to finish the other 3 first
Number 3 is considered to be very bad, so lets see how this one turns out first.
