Once upon a time, the thought of a handheld device getting a fully-featured sports simulator seemed like an impossible goal. NBA 2K18 almost scuppered that dream with a disastrous launch in 2017, but a raft of support post-launch and a (mostly) issue-free follow up in NBA 2K19 proved the franchise can run on Switch, and do so with full confidence in its technical capabilities. But we’re past the point of novelty, and now on its third iteration, Visual Concepts has had to step things up a notch for NBA 2K20.
The changes made for this year’s release might seem subtle, but you feel their impact both on and off the ball. Whether you’re playing in Pro-Am, in MyCareer of any of the other game modes in this year’s package, a player’s specific physical characteristics and skill-set now play a fundamental role in their on-court performance. Lanky centres can no longer outrun speedy power forwards, and shorter point guards can no longer confidently block shots from players that far exceed them in height. That physicality affects speed - enabling you to peel around screens and move in for the lay-up - but it also drastically changes how you defend, with your ability to sprint now serving as far more of a limited resource.
It makes 2K20 a little harder to control, and new players might find the learning curve a little steep to begin with as more experienced ballers use ‘ZL’ to smother you as a defender and ‘ZL’ to leave you for dust as they sprint away to the paint. In the long run, it makes all the difference as it forces you to play to your strengths and understand the limitations of each position. New dribble animations and refined off-ball collisions also add extra depth. Visual Concepts is really pushing the use of ‘builds’ this year, urging you to create multiple character slots based off different roles. 50 more badges to spend your VC (Virtual Currency) on - with each one representing a key trait - that focus on contextual physicality means you can really see the difference of investing more in finishing, playmaking, shooting or defending.
As a result, the ‘Road to 99’ is far less of a grind. Fans have always had a contentious relationship with NBA 2K’s approach to progression, and both previous iterations suffered from a slow and painful journey from level 60 onwards. In order to galvanise players into building multiple builds, VC is now far more plentiful through natural play, and it’s possible to reach the mid to high 90s in a couple of weeks. Of course, you can still buy VC to speed this process up, but you no longer need to so obviously. There’s also a lot more rewarded for scoring, assists and great positional awareness, which makes sense when you’re aiming to soup up your build to that final level.
That attention to speed, movement and size also extends to the debut of the WNBA in the 2K series. Far more than a token nod to the elite women’s basketball league, the players of the WNBA aren’t different character models with the same coding as their male counterparts. The flow of play feels intrinsically different, with a greater emphasis on precision, spacing and positioning. With scans of all the players from the league - and some impressive character animations - their inclusion doesn’t come off as some cheap cash-in. You can play a full season with your favourite all-female team, and there’s even a bespoke presentation package complete with commentary from a new team. It’s frustrating that you can’t edit any of the players or use a female character in MyCareer, but as a start, it’s a strong one.
MyCareer and its regular narrative story mode is one of the NBA 2K series’ centrepieces, so it’s no surprise to see it return here. ‘Where the Lights are Brightest’ has been hyped to be the best ‘story mode’ yet, and while it’s the most grounded in terms of story beats, it doesn’t introduce anything we haven’t seen before. Your created character will still meet currently in-vogue players from across the league (some putting in painfully stilted performances) and endure a predictably rocky road from college level to the bright lights of the NBA. There are narrative choices to be made, but you soon realise those choices are quite shallow and do little to impact the story. However well you perform in games, you’ll still get to choose your favourite team and score a big contract.
Considering how strong some of EA Canada’s recent offerings have been in terms of ‘story modes’ - especially the concluding instalment to FIFA’s The Journey included in FIFA 19 (something that was sadly omitted from the Switch version) - the latest MyCareer narrative component is enjoyable but ultimately a little hollow. It’s a slick production though, and most facial animations are impressively realistic. Idris Elba brings plenty of depth and gravitas when he’s on-screen, but much like Rosario Dawson, he’s criminally underused. For better or for worse, the story is relatively short (we wrapped it up in around four and a half hours) so reaching The Neighborhood is less of a grind than it was in 2K18.
The Neighborhood itself has also been retooled to make its layout a little easier to navigate, so there’s less need to run for miles between the training facility and the local courts. There are more side-activities and mini-games than ever, ranging from mini F1 karts all the way to ultimate frisbee. None of these are essential, but they’re a silly addition that makes the social hub more like a playground than ever. And with plans to roll out seasonal changes to The Neighborhood (similar to those featured in Call of Duty: WWII’s similar social hub), there’s hope it won’t be as barren as the one in last year’s release.
All the other major modes return. Pro-Am is back, as expected, although it’s now bolstered by a new 3v3 mode. Its inclusion makes sense as it enables teams playing on the casual courts of The Neighborhood’s PARK to take their power trio into the more competitive ranked games of Pro-Am. Should Switch continue to foster a dedicated community, this new setup could become one of the game’s most popular features (especially off the back of this new focus on player positioning).
MyTeam - NBA 2K’s answer to EA’s Ultimate Team - is still here, and while it’s still full to the brim with microtransactions (including an actual virtual casino, because subtlety is dead) the changes to VC and player progression elsewhere have had a positive effect. MyTeam points are a little more plentiful, and it’s now possible to build a decent team from naturally unlocked packs - and play them competitively. Getting beaten unfairly by overstacked teams is also less of an issue thanks to a new Position Lock feature that stops less scrupulous players from using high stat cards out of position. It’s still an exploitable system, but one that doesn’t feel quite so lopsided.
The franchise modes - a feature NBA 2K does better than any other sports simulator - haven’t been overhauled that much, but then again, they don’t need to be. MyGM now has leaderboards, but considering this is one of the few modes where competing with others isn’t essential, it feels like an attempt to add something new for the sake of it. Pleasingly, MyLeague Online actually works now, although with a smaller online community on Switch compared to other platforms, it’s hard to know just how stable it is just yet.
From a technical standpoint, 2K20 is gorgeous-looking game. Quite how Visual Concepts has managed to maintain reflective court floorings, realistic character models that sweat so profusely and full-on presentation packages worthy of a cable subscription is anyone’s guess. There is some screen and asset tearing here and there - we noticed a few instances where chair textures would pop in and out intermittently during a cutscene or character models would simply appear out of nowhere when the camera zoomed close enough - but with a solid 30fps in both handheld and docked mode, it’s an issue we can live with.
Overall, NBA 2K20 on Switch is a very fine game that ranks alongside versions available on other platforms. However, there is a trade off in this handheld version: loading times are very long. Expect to be waiting for minutes at a time to load a quick game, reach The Neighborhood or load up MyTeam. It’s clearly one of the concessions that have been made to load so much detail onto Switch - and ultimately it's bearable considering the hugely impressive results - but it can start to grate. Thankfully, there are very few delays when a game or mode is actually loaded, and we encountered very little slowdown throughout our review playthrough. Considering the Switch version is very much on par with the other versions of the game in terms of content and feature parity, it’s an understandable and arguably fair concession.
Conclusion
On the surface, NBA 2K20’s changes to its own formula might seem less substantial, but spend more than a few hours with its laser accurate recreation of modern b-ball and you’ll soon realise how refined it has become. Changes to Virtual Currency earning and progression take the edge off grinding, new additions to The Neighborhood and Pro-Am help bridge the gap between the two and a few welcome changes to MyTeam help facilitate move space for natural growth (even with the ever-present microtransactions). It’s not faultless, but those looking to play the full NBA experience on a handheld platform can do so with confidence and Visual Concept's approach to Switch is truly laudable. Simply put, there's no better basketball game out there.

I haven't even played 2019 which i bought on an Eshop sell for $2 yet. But it's good to see it's an improvement over last years game. If it goes on sell for like $2 again during the NBA finals like 19 did last year i'll definitely pick it up.
I really don't understand if they can get these working on the switch why not WWE? But say that I would much rather have the superior fire pro wrestling
Seriously a 9 dude wow that's insane. This game is completely unplayable on all platforms, promoting gambling, and it still got a 9. Nintendo Life quit shilling for 2k for pete's sakes dude. This is really ridiculous man.
Someone has put a basketball game in my casino!
I'm guessing the Switch version has avoided the crashing from the other versions?
@CurryPowderKeg79 go to the reddit page of 2k20. Its completely broken
Reading up. This is a joke of a review with people saying it's unplayable , developers must of throwing some.serious money around for positive reviews.
This site is becoming worse each day
Click bait articles and paid reviews
DO NOT BUY THIS. ITS RIDDEN WITH MICROTRANSACTIONS THAT ARE EXTREMELY BLATANT AND ARE BASICALLY NECESSITIES FOR BASIC PROGRESSION
ON OTHER PLATFORMS, THE GAME ALSO CAME OUT IN A TERRIBLE STATE WITH BLUE SCREEN BUGS, CRASHES AND LOADING SCREENS THAT APPARENTLY LAST AS LONG AS 12 HOURS BASED ON USER REVIEW IMPRESSIONS ON METACRITIC. I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF SOME OF THESE TECHNICAL ISSUES CARRIED OVER TO THIS VERSION. Just a precaution.
DON'T SUPPORT GAMES THAT ARE CLEARLY SOLELY EXISTENT FOR THE SAKE OF QUICK AND EXPLOITABLE MONETARY GAIN. BOYCOTT THIS IF YOU HAVE TO.
This review is unfortunately, completely misrepresentative of the game in its current state.
I only played the demo. I was surprised at how much more polished it looked than 2K19 in terms of visuals. But I have heard the complaints on it being a broken game. I stopped buying sports games annually a long time ago. But I did buy 2K19 for $2 a few months ago. So I'm content to sticking with that for the time being
Have to say I am surprised that a basketball is eligible for anything above a 7.
@BlueBlur101 12 hour loading screens come on man.
A con should be: too much basketball in my casino
@mereel
Sure they mean 12 minutes which is still abysmal!
I'm not a huge fan of basketball games, but it's nice to here a high power game on the Switch actually work well 😂 Oh, and isn't this from the same publisher who brought us WWE 2K18, one of the worst ports on Switch, at least at launch?
It doesn't matter that this game is on par with all the other system, all people will care about and focus on are the micro transactions. Too bad really as there's a really good basketball game here but won't get the proper attention for the main event.
Its not EA so I might buy it later
Why wasn't our fun guy on the cover?
@Justaguest
In a lot of ways they are even worse
Great review! I'm loving the game, big improvement over last year. Forget about the haters and enjoy the game.👍
No NintendoLife! Bad NintendoLife!!
GambliNBA does not deserve a 9/10 on principle alone.
@Hellburner918 just disregard any review by Dom because they are always a bit ridiculous. With its literal representation of gambling to how they forgot to update the 2K19 taskbar icon for this "new" game. The problem is that sports games suffer from so much monetisation these days that it really doesn't matter how good the core game is, they will always be ruined by the bull***t
@Fazermint .....ya ok.
@xxMPJxx Its wrong to hate games that has real money gambling in them that parents will unknowingly buy for their kids? It’s a predatory game in the very worse sense. NintendoLife even says it had micro transactions in the review but doesn’t go into any detail at all about them. Surely that’s a key element of any review - to go over the micro transactions and gambling mechanics. A good game with despicable micro transactions and real money gambling on this level is without a doubt a bad game. And for the record, I’ve not played this nor am I going to. I have watched Angry Joe and Jim Sterling cover it though.
Still loving 2K19!
I have it and 2K18, and I'll probably get 2K20...but not until later when the constant daily updates are done. Adding something to the vanity store in one mode shouldn't require an update of my current game when NOTHING changed in the mode I'm playing.
After the season they stop doing the daily updates - that's my target purchase window.
you cannot be serious about a 9/10!! this game full of microtransactions that does not hide that it is a virutal casino at all deserves to be hated! awful NintendoLife! awfuol!
@Xelha 2K games
@Fazermint Hey, anything is possible..as long as 2k isn't on the cover.
@Hellburner918 agreed
@Xelha I wouldn't even play this game on Switch. With huge load times... no thanks. We live in 2019 load times should be gone right now. This shows again how low CPU hardware is in Switch. Remember PSX Marvel vs Capcom/Street Fighter Alpha 3... those had load times... but on Dreamcast no load times. Because better CPU makes the difference. In such games it proofs again how badly the CPU is
...makes me want to play NBA Jam. Dammit. I like video games not simulation.
It’s so crazy how people think reviewers get paid to give good reviews. 2K could care less. When I was reviewing games I got a Dragon’s Lair Trilogy memo pad and that was after the review came out!
Is this a joke
There needs to be a new rule where any game with real gambling shoehorned in gets an automatic 1/10 or lower.
@RyanSilberman
So by logic RDR 2 is a 1/10 GTA Online is a 1/10
Steam score is 2/10 😲
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1089350/NBA_2K20/
Now that is a different point of view...
Might pick this up in a sale. The micro transactions thing never really affected me. Never pay any more than the cost of the games.
The arguement about about parents buying their kids these games and not knowing about the micro transactions, do they have their credit card details stored on the console for their kids to spend as they want? Seems wreckless. Don't get this arguement at all.
Wow. 9/10 has to be a wind-up, unless the review means that it's a 9/10 port of a 4/10 game. How much do they pay for good reviews nowadays?
Cool! Now I can take my favorite gambling simulator on the go!
Is it so hard for Nintendolife to find out the resolution of the games they review. Somehow fps gets mentioned in every review yet I have to search the net to find out how fuzzy the game looks.
compared to some other reviews given this has got to be a joke lol.
@blockfight
Kids isn't as aware of the Real world implications/damage of recklessly using credit cards as the majority of adults here. (Even then there are some adults that recklessly drain bank accounts on these games which some game companies are targeting if not more money conscious people.) A quick google search shows kids draining parents bank accounts by the hundreds, if not thousands, or even TENS of thousands from microtransactions. There are exceptions (see: Warframe) but some dark-hearted game companies will take FULL advantage of that fact by constricting or walling off game-progression from free-to-play and even full price games without paying up that cash.
Wanna move on in the game? Better pay up that cash or prepare to wait/grind a VERY long time.
I played the demo, I just can't get into it. it feels so slow, it's like everything is a delayed reaction, I will just stick to the arcade style basketball games.
Glad to see 2K put out the effort in on the Switch version unlike EA with FIFA.
....But those microtransactions in a full $60 game, ouch. 🤦On the brightside, at least sports games tend to nosedive in price rather quickly. Might get this when it's $20 or less.
@suikoden I dont know any besides putting that unibrow dude as a box art.
Nintendo Life giving a game a 9 that promotes gambling to 3 year olds.
I Give NBA 2k20 a 9.5/10 because nothing is perfect. Come at me haters
Even I will admit the way the reviewer skips over microtransactions deep in the review is somewhat suspect...
Has the lag been fixed? That was my biggest issue with 18 and 19. Glad it's prettier, but gameplay matters more.
Someone paid you well. It's obvious what this game is, but if you're giving this score, you should be ashamed of yourself.
It’s a good basketball game at its core. However, it might as well be Free to Play, given all the microtransactions and heavy grind requirements. I picked it up, at Best Buy’s GCU discount, but will be trading it for something else. The Switch version runs at 30 FPS with dips and the load times are horrendous. Not to mention the required 30 GB day one install for physical copies.
Nintendolife sold out it seems. very sad. guess i have to find a new site for honoust reviews
i question the review because wat i heard from other gamers on other sites this game is filled with microtransactions and lootbox bs reason why i pass this and last year one 2k is becoming more like ea now.
9 LOL
looks like nintendolife is getting that 2K $$$.
I dont blame them though 2k has been making a killing with all the microtransactions.
Interesting there was not much talk about the microtransactions in this review given its a casino game with a bit of basketball on the side.
Very Interesting
My big concern is that, while right now for the reviewers VC is in "plentiful" supply, they could (and have) just as easily turned it down to more meager levels via Day One patching.
Sorry, I just can't trust 2K and their gambling-for-children-featuring-basketball sims anymore.
@2runkz I’m guessing the reviewer was told to ignore it in their review and score; acknowledge it exists but don’t talk about just how bad it really is.
Yeah... sorry no buy. The microtransactions are absolutely ridiculous. And some people even say this game is unplayable. And how much is this game? Oh I don’t know, sixty frickin dollars. Sorry 2K but hard pass.
@Bass_X0 ya seems like thats the case. doesnt feel like much of a review when they cherrypick what theyll be covering on it.
@2runkz More likely they been bribed by 2k to give this a 9 im not even surprised anymore.
Everyone talking about microtransactions is one thing, but can we acknowledge they, again, stuck a nearly 40GB game on a 4gb cartridge?
That's just rude. Pass the storage coat on to the consumer and then expect them to pump more money into the game through the gambling features
STOP GIVING DOM THE SPORTS GAMES TO REVIEW
I'm sticking with 2K19 until this is on sale for cheap.
Just saying, I am inclined to agree with the commenters pointing out how this game doesn't deserve the time of day because of all the micro transactions and gambling. Although I don't think the crashing issues on other platforms should have any bearing on this version of the game.
Also... If this were an anime game with the same issues with gambling and microtransactions NL would have given it a 4. I think recently there has been some heavy reviewer bias on NL. With personal tastes harshly skewing games one way or another.
I don't know how much money it took for you to give it a 9 but I'd like to know the cost of a 10/10 review score.
Why the heck has this game been given a 9?
and after that people around me wonder why i hate nintendolife recently. you can tell they were either being paid, for it to get a 9/10 despite being a broken gambling mess or flat out being ignorant and blind to the point where they see no issues because it's a switch port.
i prefer to read from non biased sources that won't hesitate to call out filth regardless of what platform it is.
@LOZ_Master95 i agree.
If nintendolife gives basically every game a 8 then it shouldn't be surprising that this gets a 9. The problem isn't that this game is necessarily so high it's that the reviews in general skew high on this site. The 8s are in the real world sevens. And this 9 is likely a 8. I'm ok with that. In general I think this site gives too high of scores and it's not because they're getting paid. It's because they have low standards.
@LOZ_Master95 Have you found a good alternative for nintendo-centric news? I've occasionally browsed around, but haven't really found anything better than this site in a similar format, sadly.
@Captain_Toad Sure, but most kids can't use their parents' credit cards in the first place. If parents are stupid enough to let their kids have unlimited access to their credit, that's on them and a completely different issue.
wow a totally fair and totally not biased review not paid for by 2K
Yeah at this rate, I'm done.
@mereel I'm not even joking. It's all over the NBA 2K subreddit. People are making jokes about how they made lunch, went out with friends and did 3 loads of laundry while the game was loading up matches
It's unbelievable
On top of that, on Steam, the desktop icon for the game is exactly the same as NBA 2K19 with no changes whatsoever
@Hellburner918 I’m confused at what you mean by unplayable... considering... I’m playing it. Not only that.. it’s fun.
@sixrings There are absolutely games that should have scored lower than they do... but it may also just be different tastes. Have you performed a week long unbiased review of this game as a comparison?
@SlyPlayr09 If only Spyro was actually on the cartridge without a massive day 1 download (for all!! of the 3 games) I would personally have bought it...but the game itself seems great.
A 9!
It has a virtual casino!
Filled with micro transactions and is a yearly rehash...
come on nlife...
@Dayshader websites? none. youtubers? yes. i found the best youtubers when it comes to switch reviews are the ones that also review playstation and pc/xbox ports. as they probably played all versions including the switch one..
happy console gamer is pretty good, he owns multiple platforms, and i find that spawnwave too is good since when a switch port is bad, he's honest.
Interesting. All this complaining (and rightfully so) and not a peep from NintendoLife. They usually always interact with the comments, especially in reviews, to defend themselves and why they gave certain games the score they gave.
Good deal, but I played NBA 2k18 for a fair bit and I didn't like the difficulty of the simulation style gameplay. It kind of discouraged me. I will say though, that I loved the story mode.
I can't wait for games with trash premium currencies and gambling mechanics to crash and burn. They're slowly killing this industry by ruining promising games all so the publisher can get a few extra bucks out of their players. I also hope the people who keep buying these games realize how bad of an investment it is to continue financially supporting these series.
Kinda funny how Nintendo Life and half the community were so quick to come to the defence of the reviewer when one user fairly innocuously stated he wouldn't be trusting the high score given to Astral Chain right off the bat for the very same reasons the entire community is blasting Nintendo Life for here with not a single defensive comment in sight. Weird how that works.
I wondered where the one odd-ball was that would like this game, and here he is on this site.
No clothing physics still. Guess we have to wait on switch 2 for this to be possible. The player models just look off to me.
The draw for this game has always been My league. Anyone playing the Myplayer or mycareer or whatever it's called is just missing out on the best part of the game.
Let's see though...no Charles Barkley, no Reggie Miller and a huge download for the physical version. Very hard pass this year for me. I'll be saving up for a game fully on cart, the Witcher 3.
@graysoncharles : yeah, I'm not sure what the hate for the review is. I'm not even sure half the folks commenting even read it. Also, many are complaining about microtransactions. Again, for anyone reading the review you dont need to buy anything in game, and you can ignore it. NBA 2k is a juggernaut that sells all year. People should play it before complaining. I've played since the original Dreamcast versions, and have only skipped 2k16, and now 2k20, the first due to basketball fatigue, the latter because I dont want to download 30+ GB if I bought the cart.
@Zach hopelessly naive or willingly deceitful
I’m a little disappointed in you guys, this goes beyond a good game bad game thing. The heartlessness and gambling that’s implemented in this game should be made illegal. They knowingly target kids with daddies credit card and try to exploit them. These companies EA, 2K and what have you are corroding and corrupting gaming as a whole. It’s our responsibility to fight these corporations and show that we won’t stand for these unethical tactics and manipulations. If we don’t now, it will only get worse, they won’t stop until they’re forced to or this stops making money
Everything I know about basketball comes from the one time I watched Space Jam. Obviously not a game for me.
On the topic of gambling, I’m surprised Take Two/Rockstar got away with putting a literal casino into GTAV Online (which you can use real money on) and didn’t automatically get slapped with an AO rating in the States.
Why are the people in this game chasing after an orange ball? Also, I didn't see any basket?
@Cyberbotv2
Downloading the game isn't necessary, sure most of the features aren't there, but you can still play something off the cartridge that may or may not be just a paltry part of the game.
Buy this game otherwise you're just a part of the hypocritical blind Nintendo sheeple who hates third party games. So go on playing your pixel art indies like the Witcher 3, and ignore the dying pleas of this small 14 billion dollar company who just thought of a brand new idea of bringing a NBA 2k game to a Nintendo console for the first time, I swear.
Otherwise, 2k will stop bringing their NBA 2k (which are obviously failing on Switch considering it's the third one), because those sheeple Nintendo fanboys obviously don't buy video games other than the ones from Nintendo. As we know all Nintendo fans bought seven copies of 1-2 Switch and zero bought the beautifully optimized Garbage Truck Repair Shop Simulator. What monsters.
Lovely to see all the new posters with their fresh interesting opinions!
20 years on and they still can't get armpit hair right.
It scares me how 2K Games must have realized ten years ago, that they weren't saving a character anymore in their sports titles, by inserting a K to signify 'thousand'. Yet they've kept it up. I know it's a brand signifier as well, but it's been a long time since it was cool. :x
How long will the charade continue? And come the year 2100, what will they do??!
I'm confused. I've put my trust in NL and visit it regularly for a quality take on reviews and news. I have to say a single article like this has dropped that trust from a 9 to a 4. The reasons are obvious. If pay to win becomes the new norm and even glorified like it's here, it changes the very nature of what makes gaming such a pure and exciting challenge.
I am definitely done with Dom Reseigh-Lincoln who wrote this review.
Awful, just awful...
Some people are also gonna be shocked when Pokemon Sword/Shield doesn't get like a 5/6 out of 10 like this game...
@Captain_Toad but how are they getting access to thr cards in the first place? It's terrible parenting or wrecklessness with card security.
Im the only person that uses my Switch but anytime i go to make a transaction i have it setup to ask for my password and then type in my card details. No cards are saved to my account. How can someone be so stupid to have no security setup?
And as for grown ups, just because the game has micro transactions doesn't mean you have to buy them. Have a little restraint. Ive been buying fifa, nba 2k and lots of other games with micro transactions for years and have never spent a cent extra on them.
@Cyberbotv2 agreed, micro transactions are annoying and potentially dangerous but it’s not Nintendolife’s job to get them banned. A game can have still micro transactions and still be a good game. I don’t see anything wrong with the review.
Great to see someone with a monobrow making a front cover.
@Leon_Kennedy Nope, they need to be addressed and acknowledged in the review. They are still part of the game regardless of how good the actual basketball aspect is. But GambliNBA is not just a basketball game. It’s an unscrupulous wallet thief that unsuspecting players need to be made aware of.
NINTENDO LIFE welcome to the schill club
It just proves that EA are lazy! FIFA and should be done properly but they just can’t be arsed
Why doesn't everyone attacking the integrity of the reviewer and saying that NintendoLife takes money for reviews etc. just leave and not come back? Easy win. If you get much better and more honest information elsewhere, go there and don't come here. Job done.
I am no fan of microtransactions, but I don't understand how this game makes 3 year olds gamble. I have a 3 year old and firstly, he doesn't play Switch by himself as he's 3 and secondly, he doesn't have my credit card details and purchases can't be made on my consoles without a password. Parental controls and passwords have been a thing for many years and people who find their child has spent a fortune online, on Switch or on Google Play or whatever only have themselves to blame.
The game just shows that EA are lazy! If this can be done then so can FIFA - properly!
@BionicDodo Aah yes, the “see a vulnerable person on the street being mugged? Just walk away and pretend it never happened” approach. Because that’s always a good idea isn’t it? EA are the ones doing the mugging here of vulnerable players and those not speaking out against such scummy despicable practices are allowing EA to continue mugging others. Because that’s what’s they’re doing. Sure there are players who can resist EA’s tricks to get hold of all their money, but there are those players who are indeed vulnerable to these tactics.
And you think you’re okay and that you wouldn’t fall for such a 9/10 scam of a game - but then so did everybody else who thought they could trust this toxic company’s games in their home. This isn’t just a bad game, it’s a toxic game. From what I saw, the gambling and loot box mechanics are so ingrained that you can’t avoid them or pretend they don’t exist even if Nintendo Life attempts to do so. It should be physically impossible for a videogame to put the parents in a “we only have ourselves to blame” situation. I suggest you read some news articles or videos reporting on the times parents did get hit by huge losses from what should be an innocent harmless game. Only GambliNBA is unashamedly the worse of them all on consoles.
@Bass_X0 You haven't replied to what I actually said.
Point 1 wasn't saying that people shouldn't state their opinion if they disagree with a review, but that if people are going to accuse someone of being an actual crook who is taking bribes (on the internet where you get to do it without the potential for any legal comeback) then they should just walk away from said crooks. Speak with your feet as they say. I don't hold these opinions, but if someone really disagrees with the practices at NintendoLife then you hurt them far more by taking away some of their ad revenue by not clicking, than you do by clicking repeatedly to add more and more negative comments.
Point 2 was solely asking how 3 year olds are being made to gamble. I didn't say vulnerable adults aren't spending more than they should with these things, just that people are wildly exaggerating their points for effect. Won't somebody please just think of the children?!
P.S. This isn't an EA game.
Lol was this all one person with multiple accounts, or a bunch of real independent thinkers?
It got the same score as last year. I am not a basketball fan. On the other hand, I am a fan of gambling. Maybe I will pick it up when it goes on sale for $2.
@Bass_X0 the review does mention them though.
So you have to buy the game AND still get hounded by micro transactions? No thanks. Add in loading times of a couple of minutes, and I’ve already moved on to another game
The double standards in the comment section is disgusting. Last week some one questioned the reviewer and the comments and NL staff exploded with a tirade of abuse.
Now we have people going full on and no doubt justifying with the fact that they are right on this occasion. But worse still were are the NL staff this week to defend their man, no where to be seen.
No love for you here @Dom !!
@Leon_Kennedy Yes, it acknowledges they are in the game. But it doesn’t say a thing about how they impact the game in any way. But in this case, it really should have done and scored the game appropriately on how the gambling and loot boxes effect the game and consumer experience. Which I just don’t think they did.
@Hellburner918 Maybe consider the fact none of that is true whatsoever.
Since this is a 1:1, full scale port I don't see how you can give a 9/10 and barely mention/take in consideration micro transactions that are so invasive.
Not only you clearly forced yourself to ignore the whole casino aspect of the game, you also gave it a stellar score that no one else would dream to give to this product, even in other platforms where it runs and look better.
This review clearly shows how reliable your reviews are, thanks for nothing.
That valley sure is uncanny...
@suikoden pure laziness is the only thing I can think of
I haven't done a basketball simulator in years and just don't have the time to actually play them anymore. But I just wanted to say I never thought I'd see the day when a sports game got a good score on a Nintendo console again. Just for giggles, I think I will download the demo and play it for a bit.
Also, a 9/10 game shouldn’t have the flaws listed in the review summary. It’s a bad review all round.
Forgive me for the late comment, but I noticed the author states that MyLeague Online now works.
I just picked this game up and have not been able to find the ability to do MyLeague online anywhere. Is this actually true that it is working?

This game is a huge joke. Bought the cartridge last week. Needed to download 34gb and after that many more gb as updates... Wasnt able to start the game yet... Why we need to buy cartridges if we need to download so many gb? Red card forever to 2K
It is now on sale at 2,99 euros!
Wow this game would have been amazing on the switch if almost all modes didnt require an online connection. It annoys me to no end that one cannot start a game in the main modes unelss I know I have time to finish the match. Totally defeats the pupose of having it on the switch when you get booted to the menu from matches against the cpu even, if you need to put it in sleep mode.
