Yeah I'm not convinced this is going to be a drift issue though, I had an issue with my pro controller one time and I was able to recalibrate it and it has worked fine for months now.

Remember the guy that said Ni No Kuni on Switch was glitched and people shouldn't buy it? Yeah me too... All these youtubers trying to get traffic.

One thing I have noticed is that both on my joycons and my pro controller the analog input sticks now seem to have zero dead zone. I think that is a mistake.

I have my doubts about this video too.

Could be he purposely calibrated the stick so this would happen. Not saying it is so, but if you want to start a viral, make a video of something everyone wants to see (or is scared of seeing) about a trending topic.

The joycon drifting issue is real, but this news is bulls***.

How do we know that's not your pro controller doing the camera movement? Even if the joycons are sync or is part of the unit, if you sync a pro controller with your Switch or Switch Lite, those could still function or interfere with the control too even when in handheld mode. That drift may come through interference from a nearby pro controller as well.

Yeah sure, drift that happens with continuos use. This dude implies that it happens out of the box, I don't remember anyone complaining about drift on the first year of the switch. With a 23 sec video as proof. Kids these days do anything for that internet attention.

funny you say that because I never had a problem with my left joy-con but my right one is drifting alot and never stopped since I started to have the problem.

Now in general. Maybe the drifting problem is actually a software problem, I mean like a bug in the OS of the switch. Since it is that common?

Yea the guy/girl in the video is being too gentle with the stick. Touch that or smack that stick again and it goes back to normal. It seems he’s/she’s trying to touch it in a way that seems to stick

If there’s a silver lining to this, it’s that hopefully the general public will also realize the benefit of being able to quickly remove and replace your controllers from the handheld unit, thereby causing Switch Lite to flop.

Removable controllers on a handheld was a game changer for the longevity of Nintendo’s portable consoles. Any move away from this innovation is a bad idea. Modular components for the win.

Im just gonna point out that its easy to fake drifting with messing up the calibrate option. I did that once. Could still be real tho...this is just a bit sketchy

I remember all the doom and gloom reports about the launch Switch consoles and how they were supposedly all defective and broken, with the youtube compilation videos of people with problematic Switch consoles and internet trolls trying to act like it's a horrible console. I don't know if I got lucky but those problems didn't seem to be nearly as widespread as the internet tried to make it seem.

There is a lot of sensationalism that goes into these kind of reports. I like how NintendoLife is trying to keep on top of quality concerns but we shouldn't be getting caught up on every odd case of somebody having issues. The Xbox 360 red ring of death was the only time when I was like "okay, we got a real problem here."

Once upon a time, folk would have taken it back to the store for a replacement. Nowadays, they have to film it and complain lol.

So far I've corrected drift by slowly holding the stick in the opposite reaction for a while. Not all the way, just the amount of drifting you have, in the reverse direction.

Succeeded every single time. Might help others, especially if you're on a lite.

This is why products are sold with warranties and retailers have return policies. A percentage of all manufactured goods will have issues. I had a graphics card issue with my Wii, and a drifting stick for the GamePad on the Wii U. Nintendo fixed my Wii, and I fixed my Gamepad.

The big problem is people today dwell on this stuff and think they deserve an award for being inconvenienced. Get it returned, replaced or repaired, and get over it.

@sanderev calibration process is absolutely useless on the switch - even when a joycon has a slight drift, the calibration outcome will say it's perfectly balanced!

Two things: 1 has the guys tried to recalibrate the stick? And 2 what was he doing to the stick prior to the video being filmed was he playing it normally or was he jamming done on The stick like a madman?

Now this could be a potential problem but until we start seeing more cases of it, which I would say would be in the next 6-12 months because that’s seems to be the common time when the drifting would happen for most people, we don’t know if this is an outlier situation for the new system or not.

Which I hope not as I just got mine and it’s the first system I bought since my 3DS.

Joy con drift would be my main reason for not buying a Switch lite. It was one thing to send in my joycon for repair and I was still able to play but being without my system would be hard. That being said it does seem to be a tad early for an issue but who knows. I experienced drift within a few months of owning mine but I didn’t send it in until it got too unbearable to play with it.

@ctrain It’s quite alright. Let me help you understand. If the Switch Lite was a runaway success despite no detachable controllers, Nintendo might be incentivized to consider dropping that feature altogether on the next mainline Switch. It’s a simple economics decision for them.

The impending joystick failures and a wave of angry customers will help Nintendo realize that modular controllers on their handhelds is worth doing.I don’t want a future Switch (or any Nintendo handheld console) without removable controllers. This was a major step forward which doesn’t need to be reversed, even though it’s less expensive for Nintendo to manufacture.

Modular controllers on Nintendo handhelds is a good thing for all of us. Hopefully joystick problems will help the Switch Lite to be a market failure, prompting Nintendo to stick with the detachable joycons. HTH.

Nintendo One S = switch lite

I'm loving Ni No Kuni. It's stunningly beautiful and the story is great.

But I've had the game crash 2 times due to software error. I notified Bandai Namco and they suggested I re-down load the game and check that my system is up to date. They missed where I told them I'm playing it with the physical cartridge. My Switch is about 6 months old and up to date. I've done some checking and there are quite a few reports of crashes.

I'm glad I've got it and, as I said, I love the game. But there is a problem.

That is not joy-con drift. You don't delicately tap your joystick barely a milometer to demonstrate joy-con drift. Person probably put something in the Switch to make the Stick get stuck slightly off center.

Who cares? According to Wikipedia Switch is a home console, because it only replaces the failed Wii U (a home console), not the 3DS (a handheld), thus Switch Lite is a home console, so just hook the thing up to a television to play it. It'd be a bigger deal if Switch Lite were a handheld- quit arguing Wikipedia says it, so it's fact, Switch Lite is NOT A HANDHELD!

@Barbara001 Spot on, couldn't have said it better. I believe the drift issue is caused over time due to the breakdown in the sensors within the sticks that comes with wear and tear, which is definitely not something that is going to realistically happen within a week of taking it out of the box.

I don't think anybody is surprised by this. This is why i stick to quality third party controllers and mainly use a tv screen.

@GeminiSaint Answer is simple, all sticks experience wear but the issue has been so widely reported on and amplified that it starts to feel like every stick is having issues. My joy-cons are from a day 1 launch unit that is played every single day in portable mode, and neither stick drifts. Websites like NL, Polygon, etc will take every chance to report on something like this because fear drives clicks, and clicks are money. These websites have their place, hearing about new games, hearing about interviews, sales, etc, but they have nothing to do with journalism. For example, remember when for weeks after launch it felt like every single Switch was being scratched by the dock due to nonstop reporting? A cottage industry for alternate docking solutions sprang up around the anxiety and fear generated by articles like this on almost every tech website. I continue to dock and undock mine daily, I have 3 different docks that I use purchased at different points in time (bedroom, living room, guest building), and I continue to have zero scratches...

@chipperkwah It's a mass produced device. There is a margin of error (<1%). That's why we have warranty. This guy, if not faking it (which I doubt), should send his Switch lite in to Nintendo and have them fix it. Within warranty they should do so for free.

I'm quite glad that even my launch joycons still work fine.

And even if it becomes a problem, I've now successfully modded joycons twice now. Replacing the stick is actually very easy.

I do believe the joy-con drift is a widespread problem. I have four joy-cons and I have had to send three of them in for repair. Two left and one right. I imagine my forth one is just a matter of time however. I was just talking with a friend on Sunday who also has problems with one of their joy-cons. I'm not saying it is going to happen to everyone but it is clear to me that you really don't have to go far to find someone experiencing the issue.

Recalibrating does nothing, but it can make some games hard to play. I really noticed it in Mario Maker 2 because I would be trying to make a level with the touch screen while fighting a Mario that would constantly start drifting away, moving the screen away from my workzone in the process. Usually if you jiggle the stick again it would go back to a neutral position but you could set the switch down not touching anything and before long Mario would start moving on his own again.

It is irritating and can make games that require precision like Mutant Mudds difficult because you never knew when a neutral joy stick would register up causing your jetpack to hyper jump you into an obstacle.

I've had a lot of Nintendo controllers and have only had minor problems with them. I take good care of my electronics as well. For me having three out of four controllers having an issue like this is a problem, and I personally know other switch owners having the same problem. It's not great.
(Still love the Switch though).

It comes from wear. NOBODY wears their sticks down in 72 hrs...

Which means this has a completely separate root cause of the issue. Has to. Meaning it’s likely a normal low percentage defect or simply a stick that needs to be calibrated. Can we please stop jumping out of our socks over every single anomaly or defect posted on the internet out of the 1,000,000 systems sold during the launch period? Defects happen. Analog sticks can drift. And I guarantee you, even if they 100% fixed the issue, there are still going to be people out there who get a system that does stuff like this. Difference being it happens immediately out of the box. Why? Cause it’s a different issue not caused by the particle buildup interference from wear over time.

Now. I’m not saying the issue is resolved. New information shows it may be, but we won’t know until enough time has passed for normal wear to occur. It very well may still be a problem. Nevertheless, this is not supporting evidence of anything other than the fact no company has a defect rate of 0%

The drift I've experienced happens without input. The joy- stick is in the nuetral position can stay in the nuetral position and the drifting can start automatically without any user input.

I did have a similar problem to this with my WiiU gamepad. Sometimes if I was pressing a direction and then let the stick snap back to neutral it would then register another direction until I jiggled it again. It definitely didn't cause the same problems that the joy-con drift causes me and even though I can make it happen on my WiiU it never caused any problems in game other than a character moving a few seconds after I wanted to stop. With joy-con drift it seems to happen whether you are even using the joy stick or not.

@GeminiSaint They used a different hardware design for the sticks because normal ones take up more space which would mean that the Joy Cons would have to be a lot thicker.

I've only ever seen reports of the Left Stick drifting, I just wasn't aware of reports of the Right Stick doing the same.

FWIW, I've had Stick Drift before too. But it was mainly because of dust. (or dirt maybe)

But, i'm just not convinced of this Switch Lite drifting, Unless its a defective model, It shouldn't be doing this so soon.

Even if it isn't real, the sticks are certainly the same, so the drift issue is all but confirmed to be coming soon to Switch Lites near you.

@ElioTheWerewolf On my regular Switch, it's actually only the right that drifts. Some Joy Con sticks legitimately are worse than others, and the material on the trackpad can wear out pretty quick (even in a matter of days for some), so it's definitely in the realm of possibility,

@SwitchForce I'm not sure I understand what you're point is here. My reply was in no way misleading; I simply stated that analog sticks found in the Switch Lite are identical to those found in the original Switch, thus the drift issue remains, whether or not the video in question is fake or not.

I too have found NintendoLife slow on the uptake.

While the Link's Awakening art competition went entirely unreported (I think).

Not trying to dismiss the issue but in my experience, these issues appear on Youtube and pretty soon it'll be treated like a widespread issue by the general community. Just like the so called "scratches" that appear when you dock the Switch. Never experienced drift nor scratches, and no one I know has either. Again, not dismissing the issue, just pointing out it's not a widespread issue. This is not the Red Ring of Death. Whatever it is, it seems to only impact a few of the systems. I mean, I barely had my Switch a year before one of the speakers on one side stopped working in handheld mode, so I know all too well these things can indeed happen.

The drifting is an issue and I will never buy another Switch console unless they change the sticks.

between me and my friends that have a switch we have 8 sets of joycons and not one of us has had this issue. Maybe we are just lucky but Nintendo has always made stuff that lasts. I just picked up a blue switch lite and so far I'm loving it. I hope Nintendo is around for another 130 years.

You don't get drift after a couple of days of use. It's quite easy to leave a stick in an off centre position and get slight movement. That isn't drift. It took me over a year of sustained joycon use to get any drift.

If it's drifting out of the box, it's either a faulty unit .. or not drifting at all.

In a way, I'd also like for switch lite to flop.
It is not a "switch". It doesn't dock. They should've called it differently.
It seems I may have been spoiled by the original switch(due to its abilities), so I see this product as not worthy of the name "switch".
The general public is probably less informed about what switch lite can(cough) and can't do. But they may have seen more commercials about switch "switching" between playing docked and handheld, or people playing multiplayer with detached joycons. Or they have friends with original switch who told them how amazing switch is. And then they go and buy it, because in the store they saw this beautiful little device with the name "switch" on it... only to be disappointed because they can't dock it and because they can't share a joycon with the kids/spouses/partners to play mario party(or whatever).
Due to my OCD(noticed it in me with the switch and damn korok seeds in BOTW LOL) the name of this device is killing me. Although it is a beautiful little piece of hardware.
Recently I bought a new 2ds. But I was so freaking(would've used another word but was warned by someone here) confused because I saw these 3ds/2ds/whatever ds bulls...t (I hope I don't get a warning for this word) names that I got confused as frak(another word again) about buying anything at all. But I did buy it. New 2ds xl(wtf's wrong with nintendo and their names), but after using internet heavily to inform myself just what the difference is. It made a purchase more of a chore than enjoyment. Look at Microsoft and Sony for god's sake. Ok, forget Microsoft. Look at sony. Playstation, ps2, 3, 4, 4pro and now potential 5. Much less confusion and no freaking (cough) degradation.
Ok, enough books from me.
Regarding switch, I'll just wait. For a "pro" model, or a dedicated handheld with a "proper" name and fixed issues. So, no launch devices for me.

The stick would not have degraded this bad already. They probably turned on the machine with the stick not central. Like the old days of analogue controllers on the n64 and playstation.
But I do fear the drift will continue on the lite, and you can’t just get a new stick and swap it out. This is why I will stick with my day one version for now

The fact that Nintendo has seemingly still not fixed this issue on the OG Switch is a bit of a joke really. Thankfully I am getting the Hori split joycons which should solve this issue for me.

I bought my switch about two weeks ago and.. I experienced drifting yesterday. Again. It's my secound switch and I really love it for the games, but come on Nintendo...
I sold my first one becouse of drifting and back cracking. I'm really dissapointed, that with revision, there isn't that much change other than battery life.

What I don't understand is Nintendo knew about this inherent defective fault in the joy-con's joystick, so WHY use the same defective part in the Switch Lite's controllers? This was a perfect opportunity to get it right using upgraded/tested parts, but no. Well I suppose in Nintys eyes it's if it's defective they'll just fix it under warranty - and let their customers be without their beloved system for several weeks. Nice one Nintendo, nice one!

Makes me sad to see, that the Lite also has drifting issues - if the videos are true, though. Most people seem to have experienced some kind of Switch issue. My Pokémon Edition Switch has slightly bent. I miss the days when Nintendo was known for the best hardware quality.

The success of the switch lite is not going to negatively impact standard switch owners or the future of the switch pro in any way. If anything, the switch lite flopping would discourage Nintendo from releasing a pro, because it would prove too many of its "fans" are impossible to please. And modular controllers are not perfect, sure you can more easily send them in for repair if they break, but the standard switch feels flimsy in handheld mode and I've disliked that since day 1. No console manufacturer is perfect, not Sony, not Microsoft, and not Nintendo. You take a risk by supporting these companies because you like what they have to offer, but wishing them to fail because they make a product that you don't find perfect is insane. Get a life people.

This seems more like defective units than an actual issue. Drift didn’t appear in joycons until a good 6 months of ownership had passed. Mine get tons of use and it took a year before they needed fixing.

@Kit and your comment is based on what evidence? We don't know what these people did to their switches, neither do we know if Nintendo used the same parts. And what we know nothing about is, if Nintendo engineers did or did not work on this issues. All pure speculation!

Drift is basically pretty much inevitable because of the poor design of the mechanism within the joy-con/lite controller joy-sticks. I'm sure we'll see many more such cases, but Ninty can just fix it on a case-by-case basis so it's no big worry to them.

@JayJ I agree, this seems a bit like band wagoning and a ropey story at best. Can't tell from any of those videos. Let's celebrate Nintendo, not try and join the clamour of nay sayers unless it's an actual problem.

And like before so many people are piling in to doubt the defective joy stick design. Yes, it is unusual it happened so quickly, but that is no reason to dig into people who are upset they have bought a defective console (and this time it IS a console - not just an accessory but a CONSOLE).

@EasyDaRon it’s actually because Nintendo used graphite for the analog stick contacts: the same soft metal in a pencil. It wears away easily and there is no repair beyond outright replacing the stick.

The stick units are enclosed boxes and quite difficult to clog with dirt.

After having the drift issues on 5 different joy con sets, I will be giving a hard pass to the lite until they stop using graphite on the analog sticks. At least with my normal switch I can just send in the joy con to have it fixed but still play my console while its being repaired. Having to mail in my entire unit to be fixed is not something I'd like to deal with. Nintendo used to make such great quality stuff. This whole joy con mess drives me up a wall, and is a big stain on their reputation in my book. Come on nintendo I know you can do better! I believe in you!

@sixrings same here until the switch, I still think it has something to do with the stick not having a dead zone oh, I may be wrong but the sticks on the switch appear to have zero DeadZone which I really think is a mistake.

These people are either slightly moving the stick and are calling it drift, these particular consoles are defected, or they just wasted $200 by breaking it themselves for views. There is no way drift can happen in 3-4 days.

@Anguspuss yeah and I'm seeing other reports rolling in. But these sticks then drift a lot easier then the joy con sticks. Within a few days instead of years? Ouch Nintendo. There go the stocks...

And yet another "issue" with no verifiable proof behind the claims. I get that a very small few will experience issues of some sort, but most of these people are simply unable to take care of their possessions. I grew up with people who always made claims of faulty hardware, who always owned the same hardware as me, and mine was always in perfect condition and worked. There's would be covered in some sticky substance, left controllers resting on joysticks, left games open to the elements instead of in cases, etc. Guaranteed if you look at 98% of these cases here you'll find slobs trying to mask their shame.

@Anguspuss that's so sad. I'd wait a while, see if the reports are real and how severe the problem is. Maybe it's a software thing, like with te left joy con the first few months after it came out.

The new clips that have surfaced seem to confirm my worst fears. Guess Ill just invest in another regular switch instead. Nintendo is still getting my money lol

I would be curious to know what percentage of joy cons in the wild have actual drift and based on how much play time. I’m sure at some point Nintendo will have to release a figure. I can’t gauge the percentage based on a site like this where it comes across like only a handful of people in the world don’t have drift.

I personally will never get a Switch lite as both my brother and I both have had Joycon that suffered from drift and while I was able to fix mine I have no faith in the quality of the controllers. At least if my current switch acts up again I can just dock it and use my pro controller, which you can't do with the Switch Lite.

You'll want to update that the original case has been confirmed as a defective launch unit and not drift as we know it.

You say that, and yet... a couple months ago, my left stick did start drifting slightly...
It might not affect everyone, but it still is a widespread issue.

I apologize for saying this was a "dubious story" above on the day the story posted. The drift story was so early, I just couldn't believe the story initially.

Nintendo really messed up with their analogues sticks on the Switch. A company that always cared about quality...but that seems over now. Its sooooo bad!

I have a normal Switch, and both analogue sticks have drift (the right one just a little so far). If I would send it now to Nintendo it would take 3 to 4 weeks, and might still cost money (they said there might be money involved, depending on the source of the problem). I deciced to just do nothing at the moment. I want to game, to many good games at the moment. So far it all works fine, except for a few instances. Smash gets sometimes unplayable, and playing a game with lots of menu's (Octopath) might be unwise.
