Update: The wireless SNES controllers are temporarily out of stock on the Nintendo website.
If you want to properly relive the glory days of the SNES on your Nintendo Switch, you must absolutely get the fancy wireless controllers Nintendo showed off during its most recent Direct broadcast.
The good news is if you live in North America, these authentic wireless versions are now available from Nintendo's official website for $29.99 USD. This offer is exclusive to Switch Online members and only four controllers per account can be purchased. They'll begin shipping out on 18th September.
Here's the official description:
Now you’re playing with super power. Enjoy enhanced Super NES™ games the way they're meant to be played—using a full-size Super Nintendo Entertainment System style controller! Available for purchase only by Nintendo Switch Online members, this wireless controller offers the perfect way to play these classic Super NES games.
In each box, you'll receive one Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller and one USB cable. The recharging options for the controller are the included USB cable or the Nintendo Switch AC adapter.
Unfortunately, these controllers haven't been made available in the UK just yet. For more information, be sure to check out the Nintendo Life SNES controller pre-order guide.

No thanks. Why can’t we use the SNES controllers from the mini? All it would need is a converter.
@Starrebirth We're missing the buttons to bring up the menu though, not to mention to rewind in Super Ghouls N Ghosts. lol.
Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 with this controller will be sick!!!
Thanks for the heads up! In for 2...sometimes my nostalgia overpowers my brain and I make illogical purchases like this..but it also makes me so happy
@Starrebirth There is such a converter. It's called an 8BitDo GBros Adapter. You can use SNES and NES mini controllers and Gamecube controllers with it. I have one myself but I haven't tested it much yet.
@insertcoin2play I’d like to have the option to decide on that myself. I would be ok using the ‘vanilla’ SNES controller in conjunction with a Joycon if that means saving money.
Thank you very much for posting this! I ordered two
@Starrebirth Not sure what you mean. I'm using the 8bitdo adapter with a SNES mini controller and there's no way to get to the menu to get back to the game select and other options. You can't even get to it with a joy-con connected unless you plan on connecting and disconnecting each time you want to rewind a game or get to the menu.
I'll stick with my 8bitdo SF30
I wonder if these work with other games as well, namely the Sega Mega Drive classics collection?
The standard pro controller suits me just fine, but gosh darn if I’m not tempted by these. There’s just something so appealing in the simplicity of the thing.
@Cyberbotv2 pretty sure it’ll work with anything that doesn’t require the analogs, even has small ZL and ZR’s tagged into the top.
@insertcoin2play: With the 8BitDo adapter & a SNES classic or SFC mini controller, pressing Start+Select+L+R together is ZL & ZR, which brings up the menu. And if you hold those buttons down for a second, it brings up the rewind menu! 🤓
It’s not a perfect solution, but it works well enough if you don’t want to get these official controllers.
I ordered mine today. I don't have a SNES classic and these look great. I'm looking forward to playing more SNES games with the Switch Online account. Thanks Nintendo!
@kayleedayo Awesome news. Thanks! Good news for @Starrebirth too.
I'm good. The Switch Joy-Con sideways is just an SNES controller with an analog stick
I think I have given Nintendo enough money for flat uncomfortable controller with the joycons.
Even gamers at the time ditched this as soon as the boomerang design came along 🙄
Already out of stock. They only told me this after I gave my address.
@mrmememan reported
Already sold out
I’ve been waiting for this news and now it’s already too late. I guess they underestimated the demand. Do you think they will get more in stock?
I just can't recommend these to anyone. It's nice that Nintendo offers them but unless you really desperately want that exact feel of a SNES controller, you're better off buying on of the excellent 8BitDo SNES controllers instead - which have all the modern buttons too so you can play the SNES games, all other Switch games, or connect it to you PC or phone as well!
Already sold out in Canada. That's pretty lame
People always say use 8bitdo, but the one I got from them is awful. There are guides everywhere on how to fix their broken controllers. I’m happy for those that got ones that work, but if you’re going to try one make sure you buy from somewhere with a good return policy.
Went to buy one and was on the checkout screen, then had to put my kids to bed. Came back and it's sold out...
Am I surprised?...........................NOPE.
I passed on the NES controllers, but I might pick up one of these. The NES library simply doesn’t hold my attention anymore, but I could play SNES games pretty much infinitely.
Nice, I'm glad Nintendo didn't turn them into joycon style controllers like the NES ones.
I'm just glad Nintendo isn't forcing us to spend $60 on two controllers, but rather just $30 for one.
They're limiting this to online subscribers, limiting the number that can be purchased, but can't keep them in stock for one day? Ridiculous.
@retro_player_22 but the monstrosity of playing games with two nes controllers attached is hilarious.
Either way, does someone have experience with the nes controller of using it in other games than only the emulator (or would it be possible with these controllers?). Also, they say you can only order 4 per subscription. So is it possible to order one now and if I like it more, or would I need to order all i want at one time?
@insertcoin2play We're missing the buttons to bring up the menu though, not to mention to rewind in Super Ghouls N Ghosts. lol.
Incorrect. While using the wireless 8bitdo adapter with a classic controller do the following:
1. To bring up the menu: TAP Start+Select
2. To bring up the rewind feature: HOLD Start+Select
@kayleedayo You can do these functions without pressing L or R.
While using the wireless 8bitdo adapter with a classic controller do the following:
1. To bring up the menu: TAP Start+Select
2. To bring up the rewind feature: HOLD Start+Select
This also works with the NES Classic controller.
I don't need it...but I want it!
@Kazujiro: Oh, wow! I didn’t realise that L+R weren’t actually involved! That’s great to hear. Thanks for saving my hands from cramping! 🤣😅 (And it makes sense, especially since the NES & Famicom control pads don’t have L & R... 😆)
I followed the link but everything had sold out and I couldn't log in. Tried a little bit ago and even though they were sold out, I was able to log in and purchase one anyway.
My cheap 8bitdo adapter knock off has hit the UK according to my tracking (£6 from AliExpress.) Will use it with my SNES controller I got through the Stars Catalogue. Oh how I miss thee physical items as rewards!
Click link...out of stock. Why do I get the feeling nobody wanted the NES controllers so they lowered production for SNES even though it was almost certain to be more popular? Sigh
Why are they releasing this? Why isn't there an adaptor for that plastic piece of crap I paid silly money for so I can use that pad?
Nintendo isn't your friend. They like making money. It's not that complicated.
I'll be interested to see if the SNES pad is better than the joy cons and pro controller as I wasnt convinced with either when I had a few games of Mario kart and super tennis. Seemed off with Metroid as well. Just not as responsive as I'd have liked.
@MarzipanD why isn't the controller for the ps3 compatible with the 4? Why isn't the Playstation classic controller compatible with the ps4?
Sony isn't your friend. They like making money. It's not that complicated.
BTW, there is an adapter for it or you can buy other controllers. It's not that hard to find with Google or asking other people here..
@strykerking wait what
Lovely, but when are the UK (much better looking) versions going to be available
@Doktor-Mandrake Same. I picked one up last week once the SNES subscription went live and it works perfectly. Pairs smoothly and feels comfortable in my hands.
@Peshokinha yeah you missed the point, should've had in brackets (mocking voice) at the start of that post. Hope that clears my post up for you.
Oh boy.....they sell out in minutes......Nintendo underestimating demand once again. NES Mini all over again....Let's-a-go!
Got one, but I really wish they had included a home button so it could be a little more versatile.
Anyone from a region that Nintendo won't ship (in my case South America, Brazil) know if there's some way for us to purchase it? As it is restricted for members we probably won't be able to purchase it from importers...
@insertcoin2play Only the weak rewind in Super Gouls N Ghosts.
@insertcoin2play we can use this for the SNES Classic controllers, but probably can't rewind so still not ideal

@Nathendo yep, I have one. But many helpful people here have informed me you can press start and select together to access the menu! No more urge to buy the new controller, but it still would be fun to have!
