Re: Poll: So, Did You Order A Nintendo Switch 2?

chagrined

You didn't have an option for me in the poll, which is "Yes, I'll definitely buy one at some point, but it may not be in 2025." It's not a maybe: I'm sure I'll get one eventually. But I will wait until there's a game I absolutely must play right away, or possibly a special edition console I really want. (Animal Crossing would work for either one, lol.)

Re: Nintendo Says "Nothing Bad" Will Happen If You Press Switch 2's C Button Without A NSO Sub

chagrined

I'll be surprised if you can't remap the button to something else in system settings. Currently on Switch you can remap everything aside from the home button. This includes the screenshot button, so if you never take screenshots, there's a free button to remap to whatever there. This will probably just give you another button on the other side you can remap to whatever, if you don't use the chat feature.

Re: The Switch 2 Won't Have Achievements Or eShop Music

chagrined

I'm glad there won't be achievements. When they do exist I often feel compelled to go for them, but it never ends up enhancing my enjoyment. It just creates unnecessary busy work. I understand that others may enjoy them, but I'm happiest when they don't exist at all.

Don't care about music for the eShop. Themes would be nice, though.

Re: Opinion: No One Is Talking About The Switch 2's Best Feature

chagrined

I love HD Rumble, but agree that a lot of devs (especially third party ones) ignored it or didn't utilize it properly. One of my favorite third party games that DID use it well on Switch was Stardew Valley. Riding your horse, you can feel the difference between its hooves on different kinds of terrain through the rumble. I absolutely loved that. It enhanced the feeling of playing the game enough for me that I would not want to play Stardew Valley on any other platforms.

I was definitely excited to hear that the HD Rumble has been further improved in the Switch 2, and I hope some games will use it to good effect to optimize the gameplay experience, but I suspect it's gonna end up being like last time... A lot of devs will not be interested in putting effort into exploring/utilizing the subtleties available to play with there. Though since a lot of people here say they don't play with rumble on at all, maybe it's more of a niche feature and thus it makes sense for devs to not dedicate their time/resources to it. But I still wish more would, for my own enjoyment!

Re: Genki Unleashes Some Slick New Switch 2 Accessories

chagrined

I just want joy con cases similar to the PDP Armor Guards for the Switch. I loved those so much I bought them for all 4 of my joy con pairs. 😅 They were the best balance for me of comfort in handheld mode, split joy-con mode, or in single joy-con mode (since they were roughly symmetrical when held that way). A lot of these joy-con grips just have a big part at the bottom and wouldn't be symmetrical at all in that mode. I'll wait to see what assortment of grips are released when I get my Switch 2 and decide what looks most comfortable/functional to me. Or if nothing looks good I might see if I can mock up my own design and 3D print it.

Re: Hands On: 'Drag x Drive' Is Fantastic, But Is It Destined To Be Switch 2's ARMS?

chagrined

I love the adaptive sports representation and the control scheme seems really interesting and like such a perfect fit for the mechanics of controlling a chair. Having had several periods of my life when I used a chair as well as relatives who used one permanently, I think that's awesome. That said, I agree with everyone about it looking bland/lacking charm. Seems like maybe a project a dev thought up that Nintendo liked enough to let them develop it as a small side project, but didn't want to dedicate more resources to it.

I want to try it, but I'm not really into multiplayer competitive games, so whether I get it will depend on whether there's a single player mode & what it's like. And also on the price. Without more flair/flavor added, I expect this will be much cheaper.

Re: The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - All New Features Revealed

chagrined

Also hopeful they'll fix the D pad issues. I didn't play many games where it really mattered, but I still experienced erroneous D pad inputs with both my old pro controllers. Either way though, I'll probably wait for them to release an attractively colored special edition before I buy. The Switch pro controller is the most ergonomically comfortable controller I've ever used (very important to me, having bad arthritis), and this looks like it's the same shape so I'm sure it'd be great too. The paddles look interesting. I wish it had analog triggers too, since I use my pro controller with Steam a lot for PC games, and often miss them there. But yeah, I'll probably still get one at some point. But not a day 1 purchase. I don't think I'll use the C button features much anyway.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct?

chagrined

I would have given it an 8 but the stream froze/glitched for me (as well as other friends, not sure if it happened to everyone), so that drops it to a 7. There's no killer app I feel I must have that made me want to definitely buy it at launch. But they did a good job going through the features of the new system, demonstrating solid third-party support, and showcasing a few games. I felt more interested in the new Mario Kart & DK than expected, but if/when I do get a system I'll probably check them out from the library first to try them. I was pleasantly surprised by the wheelchair basketball game, though that looks like a smaller/cheaper offering. I'd like to see a big tentpole first party game that actually uses the mouse functionality in a way that feels essential. I'm all for "gimmicks" when they actually meaningfully enhance gameplay experiences.

Oh, side comment unrelated to the system/games, but: that one presenter really couldn't find a suit jacket that fit properly? 🙄

Re: Talking Point: Which Switch Game Needs A 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' The Most?

chagrined

I hope they have free performance enhancements when running Switch 1 games on Switch 2. I wouldn't pay for upgraded versions of any Switch games, but would enjoy dipping back into a number of them if they ran better.

My actual choice for the one I want most wasn't selectable in the 2nd poll, maybe because it was only published by Nintendo outside Japan. But I would choose Dragon Quest Builders 2. That was one of my fave Switch games and I'd love the excuse to play through it again. Performance dipped in some parts of the main game, but it dipped SUPER hard when visiting some of the extremely complex islands other players had built and shared in the online mode. I remember some that dipped to what felt like 2-4 FPS. I doubt they'll put out an intentional enhancement to that game after all this time, but if the Switch 2 were able to just passively boost the performance of Switch 1 games in situations like that, that'd be awesome.

Otherwise, I have more realistic hopes for ToTK running better when deploying complex builds. 😅 A similar situation, but seems a lot more likely for that game to get a performance enhancement if it requires intentional developer effort at all.

Re: All Nine Picross e Games Will Make The Jump From 3DS To Switch Next Year In Picross S+

chagrined

I agree with other commenters that non-Picross nonogram games I've tried have never had the same level of puzzle polish. But I wish Jupiter would make some more Picross games with more to them than just the plain puzzles. I got bored of the S series after a few games. When I played the old Super Mario Picross through NSO, that really entertained me a lot more despite being a much older game. Having Wario "take over" the game was really fun. Pokémon Picross was also interesting with the different Pokémon having various abilities, and there being challenges to complete for each puzzle. Just want something more involved or with a "purpose" like that but also the Picross polish/puzzle quality.

Re: Square Enix's Dragon Quest Series Has Now Sold Over 88 Million Units Worldwide

I'm playing XI S right now & really enjoying it. Previously I've played Builders 2 and that's one of my favorite games of all time (and was my intro to DQ as a series). I own VIII but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have other non-DQ games to play after XI S but enjoying it so much did make me look up rankings of the mainline games, and now I want to play V the most next.

Re: Talking Point: Which Version Of Zelda: Link's Awakening Is Your Favourite?

chagrined

All of them have their charm points, but the original probably remains my fave. It was the first Zelda game I ever played, on my big chunky grey gameboy. And I've replayed it more times than any other game. Also first and one of the only games to make me cry! I got so attached to all of the characters. In some playthroughs I'll stop without beating the final boss so I never get to that ending. 🥺

The DX version is good, and I do like the colors, but I felt like the added dungeon was mechanically uninteresting and there are some places where they colored things in a way that makes the game a bit easier (like say, a statue that you can push is a different color than ones you can't). Though it's not a big deal.

I love the art style of the remake, but I still haven't finished playing through it all the way. It definitely feels mechanically different to play in a way that feels a bit off to me. The movement and combat isn't the same. But maybe I'd get used to it if I played it more! I am absolutely in love with the mask from the remake's amiibo in TOTK lmao.

Re: Round Up: SGDQ 2023 - The Best Nintendo Speedruns

chagrined

Thanks for linking these! That blindfolded BOTW run was AMAZING! I hadn't heard of blindfolded runs before, though I'm not surprised to learn they exist because the speedrunning community is so creative & skilled. It's so incredibly cool how many things the runner could tell just from the game audio.

Re: Stardew Valley Creator Seemingly Teases Next Big Update

chagrined

I only ever played through the game once (don't remember the version number but it was before he added multi-player) and there have been so many updates with so much content since then. One day I will play it again & I'm sure it will feel like a new game with all the added stuff. It's so cool that ConcernedApe continued supporting it this long, & wild that all the updates have been free.

Re: Atlus Listening To Etrian Odyssey Fan Feedback For Future Entries

chagrined

@Dijita The Untold versions weren't DLC, but completely remade versions of the first two games. Aside from the added "story mode" with pre-set parties & characters, they also totally redid all the labyrinth layouts, and made other changes to gameplay as well.

But mostly wanted to say that V is my personal favorite of all the games, I loved the classes & felt like the labyrinth puzzle designs were the best of the series, so hope you still decide to give that one a try at some point! 😁

Re: Talking Point: From The Sublime To The Ridiculous - Is Anybody Excited For Everybody 1-2-Switch!?

chagrined

I can't imagine it will be very similar to the 1st game, if people can also use their phones as controllers. You'll have motion controls but no rumble, no IR camera (not that that got used much though), and obviously no buttons. I know the let's dance games also let you use your phone as a controller.

With the implied focus on more people playing at once, I wonder if they'll try to imitate the jackbox party game format. That might work out but probably not if they make it local multi-player only. If they can find a way to make online multi-player work it might find its niche. But seems like a longshot with Nintendo's online multi-player situation.

Anyway, I have no plans to play it either way, unless my library gets it in which case I'll check it out out of curiosity. At least they made it much cheaper, that's smart.

Re: Review: Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection - Divine Dungeon Crawling But Not Definitive

chagrined

Those mentioning the Untold games may not realize the labyrinth layouts/puzzles were also totally redone in those versions. It wasn't just the addition of the "story" mode. I doubt they'll ever be added to these as a free update, and probably not DLC either.

Anyway, given that I already own the entire series on DS/3DS, add me to the chorus of those chafing at the price tag. Atlus does put their games on sale pretty regularly, so when this drops down to $10-15 each, I'll definitely pick 3 up, and maybe the other 2. What I've really been craving instead is a new game in the series. I'd rather see what future gameplay variations/evolutions the team can come up with. It's been so many years since they teased us with that "see you next stage" announcement!

As far as the review goes, I would have appreciated a lot more detail about how the mapping works/feels in this version, given that that's one of my favorite parts of the game. Will probably seek out video reviews & see what r/etrianodyssey has to say. If it feels too inaccurate or I feel forced to automate mapping too much, I'll just stick with the DS versions.

Re: Anniversary: Five Years Ago, Nintendo Unboxed Its Most Joyful, Harebrained Experiment

Labo was actually what got me into the Switch in the first place. I've always enjoyed weird/unique tech capabilities more than just using a standard controller in a regular way. I saw the cool creations from the 1st Labo contest and was inspired to enter the second contest. Didn't own my own Switch at the time, so I bought a copy of the Labo variety kit and used my housemate's Switch. Ended up winning the NA grand prize. So then I went on to get all the Labo kits after that. 😂 Actually just busted them out a few weeks or so ago with a friend. The piano had sadly broken apart, but had fun with several of the VR games.

Re: Poll: Breath Of The Wild Vs. Tears Of The Kingdom - Which Final Zelda Trailer Was Better?

chagrined

I had fallen out of playing many video games so I didn't watch the BOTW trailer back when it came out. I'm not sure I actually even saw it before I eventually played the game (on my housemate's switch with her copy because I didn't have a switch then either). And I'm more excited for TOTK than I was for BOTW (since I wasn't really anticipating it at all, ha). But still gotta give the edge to the BOTW trailer. It's especially the music. Feels more epic. Still super hype for TOTK, though. This time, it'll be a day one purchase for me.
