It's excellent but I wish they would increase the text size which was a problem in the original too as I recall. There's no reason for the speech boxes to be so small. Also, an event theatre like the others would be nice.
@Wisestfool actually this conversation is making me wonder if I should give it another try! Maybe I will redownload it and see if it clicks or if any patches make it click for me.
Probably too late to the party here and it's already been touched on but why does the third entry keep getting overlooked? They didn't remaster it on PS4 either. Some nostalgia for me in that one even though I barely played it
@Wisestfool yeah I know, seeing this just reminded me that I own MUA3 and pretty much forgot and also nobody seemed to mention it after it had been out for a couple of months. Didn't like it anyway but this looks far more interesting to me
It's basically an appetizer for the main event next week and it is late in the night. Started strong but fizzled a bit. Not bad given the context. Personally would have liked the remaining 2D Castlevanias in some form (got Gradius instead, meh) and the other Metroid Prime remasters that we all seem to assume are coming. Not bad given the timing, but nowhere near a great Direct
@Vyacheslav333 yeah, I thought there were two games but was doubting my memory and lazy to Google. For such old, fairly obscure games a collection might have been better
Somebody was on here earlier saying this was the last gasp for a sequel. But then..... this. Prescient perhaps. I enjoyed the original but largely for creating awkward situations.
@zander_dale it is quite unique and not turn based or direct control. Basic attacks are automatic and you control the timing of arts for an individual (swappable) character in a party. Arts can cause effects and may perform better with different positioning and can be linked with other arts to cause various status effects. Not as complicated as it sounds because it builds up. It takes a bit of adjusting and the on screen pyrotechnics may initially distract from the status monitoring but it soon becomes second nature and can be a very satisfying system.
There is a lot of (excellent) exploration and experience can be gained through more than just quests so most tasks feel rewarding.
If you like RPGs and are curious this is probably a good bet. Give it a few hours to adjust to the combat system but these are some of the best in class these days. And XC 1 - 3 have an excellent non-standard story. But XCX is also probably a great place to start since it is a largely self-contained adventure.
If you jump in then I hope you enjoy it. For me it has become one of my favourite RPG series.
@zander_dale you can start here. I don't know what is in the new content but this game is essentially its own thing with similar designs and gameplay. You can play the others in any order too really but I would recommend doing 3 last (and especially its DLC which would be very confusing without playing 1 and 2)
I can't really tell from the review, is the new content woven into the game Persona style or an extra chapter or so at the end continuing from the original ending? Or both? Or shall I just wait until I finish it anyway to find out? 😛😛
@UltimateOtaku91 I suspect that X and the 3DS port largely lost out because few people bought them maybe.
Great thing about this series is that there is no dud on the list and you could slide all of them around into pretty much any order without being controversial (XC2 for me)
@Daniel36 wasn't until I moved away that I started picking up from around the world. Pre internet I guess it was harder to sometimes even know they existed. Luckily these days it has mostly levelled out, although there is still a lot of Japan only stuff
@Daniel36 never had a SNES when I was a kid and the PS one never got released in Europe. I don't think the 3DS one did either but I was in Asia by then. Squaresoft weren't keen on Europe it seems. We never got (and still haven't) the first Parasite Eve or Bushido Blade 2. And the PS Saga game. And I actually had enough time to play them back then.
@Daniel36 I would love a remaster and rerelease, with the 3DS extras. If they remake it then HD2D. This is an unfinished one for me since my 3DS cartridge was destroyed in one of the great floods in my apartment - I was at the final boss.....
But..... I think we are getting a music concert and some trading cards 😭😂
@Daniel36 yep indeed, it was the first thing that came to mind 😂 However, the whole "beyond the game" thing makes me think that it's not heading where most of us would like. For whatever reason
Konami seems to be better at releasing collections of their older games so maybe they should just do that from now on. Better than more pachinko right? 😛 Are 1 and 2 separate from 3 story-wise?
And please Konami, another Contra collection, and Requiem plus the 3D Castlevania stuff. Too greedy?
This looks good and I thought it might have been a new game in the Evil Dead / Halloween game series thing.
My ten cents worth, T2 is a great action film but T1 is the best. T2 is where the franchise started to go wrong, mostly because the terminator protector dynamic was popular and successful so all the films ran with that going forward with gradually more implausible "superior" terminators being dropped in as villains. It lost a lot of the hopeless and desperate feel of the first film with people who could get hurt and tired. Also, why were terminator skeletons suddenly ground forces in T2? They were infiltrators in the original but then Skynet wanted them as troops despite having the same mobility restrictions as people? Why go to the effort of giving them teeth? Make a virus instead 😆😛
@Xenoblade-Fan unless the new X content draws a line under further X stories 😛
Not sure how to do the spoiler box so SPOILER WARNING FOR XC ALL MAYBE. I think the flute music in the finale was the suggestion of the reunion (and the world's were in contact prior to Mobius' interference). Personally, I am happy for them to leave that story there with anything more up to your imagination.
Something I like about XC is that many people have a different favourite entry and it's nice to hear from somebody who does not share my own. Roll on more Monolithsoft!
@Djreisat yes they did. Mostly. It is still the Switch or "portable" version but it is full featured and runs just fine. Obviously not PS5 level graphics but it is night and day compared to how it started.
Can't wait for this. My Wii U went a bit loopy so returning to my old save is sadly unlikely. Lots talked about the text size which I didn't really notice. This is a growing issue, even on TVs and I don't get the drive to transfer every text to microfiche. Recently picked up Bloomtown which seems awesome but is utterly ruined by the tiny speech text
@Xenoblade-Fan I think it is a fair point. I actually liked XC2 the most (seems to be a controversial choice but I liked the cast most here) and I liked feeling a bit confused by the weirdness in the final act which ties to the weirdness in the final act of XC1. I agree that the combat system has been refined although that could make it harder to go back to the earlier games, which I think should be played. And really, any of these games is still a good time since they are some of the best JRPGs of recent times and the DLCs for all 3 are equally awesome.
I will say though that the ending of XC3 has some pretty big spoilers for some of XC1 and definitely XC2. I think you know what bits I am talking about 🙂Love the whole series though. Although even having said that, I still hope that Monolithsoft give us a new epic Xeno-Something trilogy or series.
@Xenoblade-Fan @CaleBoi25 Not sure that I would start at XC3. XC1 and 2 can be played in either order but 3 is very much a sequel, especially the Future Redeemed DLC. Might be a bit confusing to go in with 3. They are all definitely worth playing though and XCX is self-contained (unless the new content changes that).
I'll play devil's advocate here - Knight wasn't that bad on Switch. Maybe I was more impressed than most by the mere feat of getting it to run at all on Switch but I played it more on Switch than I did on PS4. The problems I had with it were mostly the same as the PS4 version - virtually everything to do with the Batmobile sucked, the Riddler puzzles are excessive across the huge open world and everything seemed to just be "more" and not in a good way with so many of the bloated and excessive numbers and varied enemies fights being a chore. The amount of times that Batman punched an electric guy in both versions because there were about twenty thugs around him and the free flow targeting couldn't keep up became annoying fast. It had some great stuff in it but it was far more 50/50 than the other games, every bit as frustrating and annoying as it was excellent. So ultimately I think everybody might have been more forgiving of the middling port if it had been of a better game. My opinion. Flame on.....
I don't like the term "Boomer shooter" and see the obvious confusion but is it not referring to the constant "boom boom" action of these shooters? As opposed to the more cinematic COD-style ones??
How is the text size and can it be adjusted? Every video and screenshot I have seen of this and it's predecessor seem to have very small text. Too small for my knackered eyes.
@Thomystic ok, I think that's a fair point. I admit I am biased against the term - I used to work as a supermarket cashier many moons ago and the term reminds me of the endless stream of groceries churning towards me on the conveyer belt whilst everybody else was out enjoying their Saturday 😂😆 Paid off in the long run though 😁
I'm no expert on game engines but I wonder if this is scalable so they could just patch it for Switch 2 to up everything. This game works so well as a portable experience that you can just dip into on the fly
As others have said I don't really know what to make of Platinum Games these days. Their back catalogue has some greats. Bayonetta 2 was amazing but 3 was awful IMO and most of their output now seems to involve throwing as much junk on the screen as possible whilst moving everything really fast whilst the player spams the dodge and normal attack buttons. Maybe they have become the Michael Bay of videogames, all distraction.

Still my favourite in the series. But this trailer was mostly cutscenes so I am curious how much is actually improved.

@Ryu_Niiyama couldn't get into it myself, everybody felt underpowered for superheroes and it just didn't click. Glad that it did for some though.
