For some reason I found the voiced elipses in the Another Code demo really jarring and couldn't move past them. Pressing a button to hear someone sigh felt weird and it happened a lot.
I'm not much of a Smash Bros fan (like the nods to games and nostalgia far more than the actual game itself) but I think this would be a good one to not sequel but instead build upon with a Switch 2 upgrade adding graphical improvements and new content, modes and characters.
@VoidofLight thanks. I dipped into the first chapter but it does put me off that it could be another five years before it is complete. The graphics seemed like an odd issue to have with the game since the graphical style is basically quite minimalist and style focussed anyway.
So are the graphics underwhelming compared to previous chapters and Undertale or other releases? I mean the previous releases weren't exactly powerhouses but they had a style. As for unfinished, yeah, not a problem if it gets finished. I've been waiting for Half Life 2 Episode 3 for near 20 years (obviously it's never happening)
Doubt I would have even noticed if DF didn't keep talking about it. It's not as good as the OLED screen but it's fine. I am sure we will get a significantly upgraded model in about five years when our launch models are wearing out.
The only real issue is the storage. It feels like we're back at the Switch 1 launch on that front, waiting for big-enough cards that will probably be expensive for a while. And still a 2TB cap despite a lot of the games being around 60GB these days pre patch and DLC. Hope that is just a firmware issue if 4TB cards ever surface. Or give us two slots in the major revision.
The world design of all of these games is excellent although it's one of the main reasons I find 3 to be the least good since that world is largely made up of old elements from the other two and so has a less distinct identity. The only other thing that bothered me were the high entia wings being on their heads. Surely you'd need a titanium spine and elephant-leg neck muscles for that to work 🤪🤣
Interesting, let's see how it goes. Personally I would love to see something like this set in the original books' post-war Cold War 50s. Didn't live through that time myself but the existence of smart tech, AI and the internet makes the modern era gadgets much less interesting to me.
I completed everything in this on S1 except for all the Riddler nonsense. I still maintain that this being (IMO) the worst of the Rocksteady trilogy and the excessive Batmobile sections are much bigger issues than the performance ever was.
But then again my first open world game experiences were Hunter and Midwinter on the Amiga, so.....
@arabiansanchez hopefully it does mean performance upgrades, but it could just mean that they fixed issues with the initial Switch 2 emulation (I'm sure I saw a technical video explaining that Switch 2 uses some sort of backwards compatibility plus emulation mix).
@jfp I am hoping it at least means upped FOS and resolution on some of those, or draw distance on the 3D ones. Won't be getting a Switch 2 for a little bit but I am already shelving some of my current games until I do so I can play them in hopefully upgraded form.
"Several adjustments have been made to improve gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2." so..... Does that mean that these are bug fixes that existed in the S2 performance or does it mean upgrades that improve the gameplay when compared to S1 gameplay.....?
I wonder how long it will be before Switch 2 games get eShop sales? I say this because it could actually be cheaper to buy the S1 version and then the upgrade at that price.
Some very odd comments on here about game of the year - "how could this be a GOTY? I haven't played it but my subjective opinion says it's not and I don't like these kinds of games so it can"t be" type fare. The GOTY will be unique to each person and the big publication and show GOTY awards, whilst still a strong recommendation, do not mean that your personal opinion won't be different.
This is (in my opinion) about as good as gameplay-centric VNs get and it is certainly my GOTY so far.
Also for those saying about the demo, the combat gets much more involved later in and the choices are unlocked quite far into the game (but have a huge impact on the plot and even gameplay when they do arrive).
At least it was different, even if not totally successful. I enjoyed it. Metroid is a series that I would actually like to see try a more open world. I know the games sort of are already but I quite like the idea of jumping in her ship and stopping off at space bars for bounties. As long as they avoided the usual A to B "quests" of open world games
@Vyacheslav333 that's a shame. Well, the game is still great. I wonder if I will have the determination to unlock all of the routes and CGs anyway. Again, thanks for the info
Probably still my favourite in the series but I played it to death six years ago and there isn't really enough new stuff here to make me buy it again. If you haven't played it though then this is excellent
@Vyacheslav333 thanks for your thoughts. I am only aware of the one CG being censored in The Hundred Line but have heard rumours of more (I'm still finishing my first 100 day playthrough but it's apparently massive). Wonder why Nintendo went this way when they have allowed far heavier stuff on the Switch before. Oh well, it's still my game of the year so far.
@Vyacheslav333 I think you've mentioned it before and I can't find it through Google but do you know if the Japanese Switch version is also censored? I am mostly against censorship and have seen the "offending" image (I live in South East Asia and it's pretty tame next to some of the male and female advertising we get here but I was seeing it out of context) but I have heard there are others.....? I am not as bothered as many others but it does nag at my nature that I have an "incomplete" copy. Not that that's on Tookyo mind and the game is still excellent.
@imgrowinglegs unfortunately not in Cambodia where I am currently working. Some of the regional restrictions on Prime are weird. I think I heard that it got a 4K remaster a few years back but that could be wrong.
@mlt I am very much a fan and had everything he did on DVD, including Paranoia Agent (probably his least good work IMO but as you rightly say that still makes me it very good). I think it's a shame that his work seems to be getting increasingly difficult to track down aside from Paprika, really wish it could be brought back for a wide audience and get the recognition it deserves.
Wait, Satoshi Kon.....? That guy was a genius who created some of the best anime movies I have ever seen. I have recently been looking for a legal way to watch Millennium Actress again (one of the most criminally ignored anime films ever) but am still drawing a blank unfortunately. You peaked my interest (this game is already on my wishlist) with that name alone. And everybody else check out the guy's relatively small anime output (sadly he died young some years back).
Aside from the open world aspect and, er, driving, I guess, these games just aren't comparable. Just as well say that GTA6 will be better than Just Dance 26. I don't even have much interest in MK.
@RickStar that's a shame, like I said I am mostly against censorship but I don't really have a Steam option so, guess I will check out what was censored online.
@RickStar I think there is a conversation about the censorship in this chat above, apparently it is just a change to one CG and they disagree about which version is better. I am generally against censorship and regional changes but that's quite a minor one in such a big game (and not on the level of removed content like in one of the Fire Emblems, the first South Park and Yakuza 3's original release).
I would definitely recommend this one though, very clear that a lot of thought, care and effort went into it.
@jolteon23 the English voices are similar quality to the Danganronpa games and RainCode if you played those. Pretty sure many of them are the same actors that Atlus use for Persona and SMT. Personally I like the English dub so I can appreciate the animated scenes fully. Either way though the game is awesome.
Also I think you can switch to the Japanese or English voices at anytime so it doesn't lock you in on a playthrough.
@JustMonika loving it so far. I know everybody gates on Ultra Despair Girls but the only reason I don't pick up Danganronpa again on Switch is because it's not "complete" without it, animes aside. Bought The Hundred Line at launch because of the financial commitment they showed.
It's a shame that Nintendo didn't do much with their brief VR foray. What was there was really fun and they could probably have created some non-LABO bundles.
@JustMonika Wall scroll? That is money well spent (seriously).
The Hundred Line could well be the last great Switch exclusive (console at least). It's a seriously good game. First game I payed full price for without issue (they said they'd be in trouble if it didn't sell). If you want something different or love Danganronpa/AI then give it a go. Otherwise we'll get Identikit easy-sell slush going forwards.
As far as I can tell the Switch 2 is also limited to a maximum card size of 2TB. That's not much given the file sizes above especially when the theoretical sizes of the cards are much bigger.
There's some suggestion that all the major players are looking into handhelds going forwards so maybe we need a new storage medium.
Have they confirmed if there is a memory cap on the cards with Switch 2? I think I saw that the express cards have a theoretical maximum of 150TB (!!!) but does the console have an upper limit?
I know the 3DS technically had something like a 32GB limit but you could get that up to 128 with some formatting workarounds. And Switch had 2TB, no bigger cards to hear about a workaround either way.
Excellent game but I am pretty much done with it these days. Maybe in ten years or something. However, there are several GameCube games I would be interested in.
My life and work currently puts me in Cambodia (great place, come) and it's unlikely that the Switch 2 will be out here until July or August so my wallet gets a reprieve and I get to see how well the opening selection performs.
@Banjo- thanks. The latter is the bigger concern for me since I still play games from ages ago. Finally finished Persona 3 in P3P form after 18 years, maybe Okami is next.....
@Stwert thanks, I assumed as much. Just wondered if the DLC extras, which have to be unlocked/downloaded, functioned that way or like the NSO vouchers where you basically keep the "benefit" of those vouchers "forever" regardless of NSO membership status. Guess I need to get the abacus out and see what is the best path forward.
Might be a bit too deep in the comments here but any info would be nice here - as far as we know, when NSO membership includes DLC content, does that cancel if your membership lapses? Whenever I pick up a Switch 2 the GameCube (and also GBA) games are enticing me to pick up the expansion pass. But if that ends at some point, what happens to the included DLC? Thanks
Have only been dipping into NSO on and off for the last two years (which kills my chances of a Switch 2 pre order it seems) but I may go for this with the GameCube games. No desire to play through Wind Waker again but if they put Eternal Darkness on there I'd like to finally finish it
A mixed bag. The first twenty minutes or so did nothing for me outside of the basic console overview. Mario kart, and this isn't a criticism of the series, is basically Mario kart and I was thinking before the Direct that they'd probably just make it open world. The second half was much better with some interesting ports and DK looks great (and about time too). However, as I said on the dedicated article, the storage seems like a big issue. 256GB is not much these days and the required express SD card format only seems to have an extra 256GB widely available currently. Seems like a dumb move and, as others said, reminiscent of Sony's dopey decisions on storage with the PSP and the Vita. They told and showed little about this too - are we restricted to one SD slot and one format only even for Switch 1 games? I still want one, but I will be maintaining my Switch 1 as well to store my games from the last eight years.
Storage is a big deal for me and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this format cap at 1TB, at least for now? Games are generally getting bigger not smaller.
