Re: Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Is Shutting Down After 28 Years

Thermoclorn

I remember scanning every line of every page of the Ocarina of Time guide as a kid, trying to learn where you get the doubled magic meter, and concluding that it simply wasn’t in their guide. Maybe I was just a dumb kid, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Years later I got the Pikmin 3 guide and found its format to be utterly useless.. the maps were nice I suppose, but the Nintendo power guides were always far superior

Re: Soapbox: Why A Nintendo 64 Classic Edition Might Not Be Such A Good Idea

Another point about the controllers:
Games like Star Fox had rumble as an integral part of the experience. Would nintendo produce controllers with rumble? Even without it the price of manufacturing an n64 controller is in a whole other league than NES and SNES, which is to say nothing about the fact that many of Nintendo’s first party games are meant to be played with 2-4 players... The n64 mini would be a very expensive ordeal

Re: Nintendo Applies For New N64 Trademark - Is Another Classic Edition On The Way?

Thermoclorn

I have a lot of trouble understanding why people think an N64 classic mini might happen, which is to say nothing about those who think it is inevitable. The logistics are damning. Manufacturing and shipping with a single N64 controller already puts this in a higher price tier than the SNES mini given the size and the inclusion of a joystick (rumble would also be missing from the games that made it famous [Star fox 64 with no rumble!?!?] unless they added another price bump). The first party library (which is already more limited than the NES or SNES) is dominated by explicitly multiplayer games, and games like Pokemon Stadium and Mario Tennis/Golf would be missing features (Transfer pak functionality) making the controller issue worse. We know that Nintendo values their N64 library more than their 8 and 16-bit libraries based on virtual console prices alone. Rare holds the rights to many of the most desired games... That this couldn't reasonably happen for under $120-150 points towards it likely not happening to me. I may be wrong, and I look forward to you fine people pointing out what I'm missing!

Re: Feature: Getting The Best Picture Out Of Your Nintendo 64: The RGB Edition

I recently noticed that my CRT has S-video inputs so I picked up a cheap S-video cable on amazon for my N64 and was floored by the difference it made. The incredible difference that going from composite to S-video produced made me totally stop considering mods. The S-video change was even more dramatic for my Gamecube. F-Zero GX looks practically current gen

Re: Your Joy-Con Can Now Have a D-Pad if You’re Brave Enough

Thermoclorn

@Riff-the-Don Based on what you are describing, it sounds like it's not a problem with the joystick. If you are tilting it and then letting go but the controller takes a second to stop registering the tilt input, your controller is probably disconnecting momentarily. It could be the very common (at launch) joycon disconnection issue.

I got Breath of the Wild and a Switch day one and had this disconnection issue. Sometimes I would be running and let go of the stick and Link would continue running for a second. Or I would be scrolling around the map and let go of the stick but the camera would continue to pan. The controller reconnects before you can even check to see if it disconnected in the first place. Nintendo will repair the issue if you contact them

Re: Feature: Is It Really Cheaper To Order Retro Games Direct From Japan?

Thermoclorn

@Priceless_Spork The procedure consists of snipping two cm scale plastic squares which are attached to the plastic case inside the console where they will never be in view. It can be done very cleanly with sharp tools and is very widely considered to be an enhancement. No one is attacking you, we are just disagreeing with your idea that this lowers the value of the console when in fact the opposite is true. We are also claiming that this is easier and more aesthetically enjoyable than playing games in cart cases with labels that don't match.

Re: Poll: Are You Excited About the Super NES Classic Edition?

Thermoclorn

This announcement ruined my day. I want this so badly but know that I shouldn't expect to be able to get one. The scalper problem has gotten worse and worse instead of better. It's deeply upsetting that I can't walk into a store and buy the things I love from my favorite company, and Amazon will likely put up preorders at some random time unannounced that will sell out in seconds.

Re: The Metroid: Samus Returns Legacy Edition Looks Fabulous

Thermoclorn

I've been pretty disappointed with the stuff that Nintendo has been packing into these special editions. BotW Master edition was the first time when I thought to myself "I don't want any of this". Now this is following suit. Would love it if the Amiibo were packed in instead

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Composer Confirms Soundtrack Is Practically Complete

@Dakt @8itmap_k1d I think it's fantastic that the two games take different approaches to the world. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with you about X being streamlined. I enjoyed it, but found it much more obtuse and thought it took me about 20 hours before I really understood what I was doing and what the game was.

I'd be happy to see a return to the format of the original. It felt to me like a mixture of linear and open world simply because the areas were so large and it was easy to travel between them. That said, I love both games

@Yhdekskymmenen I liked World Tour somewhat, but the Handicap system wasn't implemented correctly in my opinion, and the game was layed out confusingly. The dumb gear unlocks didn't feel interesting. I would like to see them bring back a clear progression (sort of like a story mode but not necessarily).

Re: Review: Mario Sports Superstars (3DS)

The Mario Sports games have been awful lately. Back on the GBC Mario Tennis was my favorite game on the console. Mario Golf Toadstool Tour was fantastic on the Gamecube. Lately they have just completely neglected to add the great features that the games used to have. I hope they get a new team working on Mario Sports soon.
