Though it has certainly dropped off in popularity since last summer (and who could forget that trainwreck of a festival?), Pokémon GO still has a strong and loyal fanbase and Niantic is keen on keeping them busy with new content from time to time. This past year saw the addition of Generation II Pokémon as well as Legendary Pokémon, along with an overhaul to the way that gyms are run. Even so, it seems that Niantic could be gearing up for another big expansion.
The Silph Road recently did a teardown of the latest version of Pokémon GO and found data in the code for 135 new species of Pokémon, all from the Hoenn region. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that the new additions are coming soon—there are only text files for now—it seems to indicate that the developers are laying the groundwork for a much larger update in the near future. Perhaps before the year is out, we’ll be catching Torchics and Flygons.
What do you think? What’s your favorite Gen III Pokémon? How long do you think it’ll be before we see them added in? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

....Still no way to add in more Stops, still not playing this.
Primal Grouuuuudonnnnnnnnnnnnnn!🤣
North American SNES mini preorders are up on BestBuy
It'll probably happen in September, since gen 2 came out 7 months after Gen 1/launch of the game, and if THESE is to go by, swell, 7 months later would be in September.....
@Joeynator3000 There once was a way, but because that got an overload of requests for MOAR stops, they decided to stop that.
I don't play this anymore, but this is cool. My favorite gen 3 poke is Spheal and its evolutions. I think we'll see these added in early next year or December.
I need Swampert in Pokémon GO
Yes! Soon I will have my Blaziken.
I'm kind of wanting Gen 4 moreso. Really wanting Garchomp, and to evolve some of the oldies into their new form. That said I guess Gardevoir will useful, especially if there is emphasis on it's fairy typing.
I've still never played this game and don't really see the appeal.
I just hope they take their time with it... I think they got lucky that gen 2 went fairly smoothly despite the bulk dump of Pokemon all at once, but I don't see how the game can support another generation without the spawn/rarity system being given a substantial overhaul (e.g. adding a 'migration' rotation to wild spawns, similar to what they already have with nests, so that different Pokemon are available each week).
There's also the issue of bugs... the more they rush an update, the more bugs are included as a result of not enough testing having been done, so they need to take their time with the update... but before that, they still need to finish fixing all of the bugs and performance issues that were introduced as a result of rushing the gym/raid updates.
If they had third gen near launch I would have actually played this game.
Gen 3 best gen baby!
Wow. I'm guessing next summer is when we will see a full gen 3 release. They have 6 more legendaries at most, so I think it's pretty likely.
Trading doesn't really make sense in this game.
Shame my local area's Facebook group has now been overtaken by spoofers, the raids had been good til recently!
@Joeynator3000 what are you talking about, they added loads of new pokestops to my city a few months ago with the gym overhaul (despite there being a lot already, you can never have enough I suppose!)
@Mijzelffan Good for you, but I'm not walking out of my neighborhood and across a very busy highway just for one Stop. (not to mention the very hot weather)
Their last game allowed you to submit your own portals, yet they randomly decided to can that feature here.
Chimecho can finally be mine!
This is welcome news! I've long wanted a Mawile in Pokemon Go.
Yeah. Why not?
How about finishing rolling out the Gen I and II Pokémon?
Nope, we got Mewtwo and the five legendary birds in Gen II, makes just as much sense to get Mew and Celebi only when Gen III is out.
Typical Niantic. Whatever. As I said before, the Pokémon GO Fest made the game as user-friendly as an actual Pokémon game should be, it would be fine to have that as a standard.
Also, please, Niantic, I beg you, please fix the un-marking of a Favorite Pokémon that comes back from a gym. I know that making hard-earned Pokémon easier to lose is tempting on a business standpoint, but seriously, Niantic, no.
