I Am Setsuna might not be a brand-new JRPG release but it's nevertheless a very welcome addition to the launch lineup for Nintendo Switch.
Positioned as an old-school JRPG "like they used to make", the game is being given the launch trailer treatment by Nintendo UK, an opportunity to highlight the many positive reviews it has already been given following its release on other formats.
Also mentioned in the trailer is the fact that the game will feature a French-language option, which we imagine will prove to be a big selling point if you're from that part of the world.
Are you looking to pick this up on Switch launch day? Let us know with a comment.

I didn't think there were that many accolades to pile on lol. I keep hearing from people who played it that it's just "ok"
Granted I haven't tried it yet so I can't really speak on how good it is or isn't.
And wait...why is it ps4 footage being shown and not the Switch version at this point??? I mean surely they can get some easily right? It's like 2 weeks away lol
0:48. That's just awkward and screams amateur hour.
Paving way for the sequel- I Was Oramge
I wish they'd pile on a physical release for the US instead
Uuu, je suis interested.
@markie7235 Surely if Nicalis can produce a physical version for each of their Switch games, SE can handle it.
If it had been a physical punch would definitely have bought at launch; since it's digital I will wait and see what the price. More likely I will wait as I got several decades worth of JRPGs still to get through.
Bottom right hand corner 8 seconds into the trailer. How professional?
Yes on PS4 I heard it was a mixed bag, which was a shame since I was interested. But it would need the right price for me to jump on board/
I really prefer a physical release too I like having cartridges.
I'm giving it a try, it is just not high priority.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE good eyes, my friend. Good eyes
This should do OK sales,it won't have much competition in the early months of switch arriving
This release exists to recoup losses on the PS4 and Steam release of the games.
This is tempting, but it's not something I want to buy on the same day as BOTW
I'm going to assume they'll ask for forty bucks for this game yet again, which means it will tank on yet another platform. I bought it during a steam sale and I like it, but the more I think about double dipping on it without a physical copy, the less I want it.
Why aren't we getting a physical edition of this is beyond me.
Probably would have bought it if it was a physical release (is it confirmed that there is no physical release?), gotta save that 32 GB space for now though... Plus I have been sitting on Bravely Second too so I'll just play that.
Because SE outside of final Fantasy doesn't see any of their franchises as popular in the US or English speaking countries to invest in language localization to do it. It's not that they can't, they just dont. So we tend to not get the Dragon Quest games or this in physical forms. Maybe we get the DQ games but wouldn't count on it for a year or so after release in Japan at least.
We never got DQ X, though it is an MMO. Hoping DQ XI comes here but unfortunately SE has a bad track record on their JRPGS outside of FF
My idea is to buy every single game that launches in cartridge for Switch, so if it comes, I will buy it =]
Physical release or bust. I don't pay more than 20 bucks for digital games. Japan gets one, so I'd like one too. Even as just an Amazon or Gamestop exclusive.
Apparently they got the name from a conversation with a small orange
My favorite thing about this is the idea of taking the game on-the-go. Played it on PS4 and enjoyed the old-school RPG feel, here's hoping we get a sequel on Switch as well.
I'm looking forward to this game.
This is a good game.
Basically, if you thought Bravely Default and Second was good, you'll like this.
I'm definitely buying it.
@markie7235 We're getting a physical in the UK.
@Monkeyofthrfunk Really? If so, with no region lock now, I'll just buy a UK copy
@setezerocinco You will be poorer than you think sooner than you think lol
( I will be joining you! )
Yeah I'm up for a some good ol' RPG goodness. Will probably get it and play BOTW first. But yeah, definitely on my list :3
I have it already...haven't touched it but I may buy it for switch so I can play before I fall asleep.
@TossedLlama Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 2 & 3 had 3 party systems too, and they were great. Setsuna just doesn't live up to them.
Eh, from reviews on places like RPGFan, this was supposed to evoke tones of Chrono Trigger, but it didn't live up to the hype. I'd still like to support it, but not until a big sale.
Also, LOL PS4 footage. It's only a couple weeks until launch day, and we STILL have barely seen any real footage of... anything complete running on NS. Suspicious...
Yeah, having a large quote that describes it as 'A good old-school RPG' from a site I've never heard of is hardly the highest accolade a game could attain.
@Monkeyofthefunk
You sure about that? As far as I've heard it's only Japan that will get the physical release.
@Flowerlark Since there is no region locking, I reckon there should be an option for French. I might give it a go too.
I haven't played this game myself. At first I got excited about a Square RPG on launch day, but when I realized it's a kind of somber, depressing world, I don't think that's the most enjoyable way to celebrate my new toy
@PlywoodStick I can't believe they actually used PS4 footage for the Switch, considering PS4 trailers usually use PC footage. Things are looking up!
Physical release in North America, please.
A decent RPG, only thing I don't like is how so underdeveloped some of the characters are and earning money in the game isn't like what it use to be. You don't earn money from battle but instead through trades. I don't get why more modern Square Enix RPGs (except Dragon Quest, Bravely Default and Bravely Second) now follow this method.
I'm excited to play it. I passed on the PS4, as my backlog there is insane already. So I'm glad I'm getting another chance on the Switch. Oddly enough, this will be one of 5 games I'm getting a second chance at cause I passed earlier. Lego City: UC, and Tomorrow Corps games being the other 4. (Did play and beat Little Inferno thou)
So why does everyone want a physical release? So they can sell it later? Or purely to save their memory?
I'm interested and I plan on getting it. It seems like a neat game
@coolaggro
1 Physical carts don't eat up space. I've only got 288gb total (256gb micro SD + 32gb internal). I used 250gb on Wii U buying digital games only when they didn't have a physical release. That means it's gonna cut it close this gen with 288. Every GB counts
2 Physical carts are physically owned
3 Physical carts can be added to a physical collection on display shelf
4 Though I'd never sell my games, physical retains value
Those are the main reasons I (and I assume most others) want physical. Far be it from me to skip a game just for being digital, but if I had the choice I'd certainly prefer a physical release over digital every time
@JaxonH Yeah, I made the mistake of going mainly digital on PS4. Was lazy, didn't want to swap discs, AND most importantly, didn't want to see another disc drive blow out on a system. However, when I had forgotten to make my PS4 primary, and lost internet access last year for a week, i quickly realized just how horrible that choice was. Suddenly I had no access to 85% of my PS4 games. Thankfully that's not been the case with Nintendo systems, and while I greatly want to see account based purchase data like on other systems, I hope and pray that doesn't mean the end of "always having access to your purchases" on a Nintendo system.
@JaxonH interesting. I find myself playing games much more often if I have them digitally. It's just so much more convenient, somehow, even though I don't consider myself a particularly lazy person.
Thanks!
That piano is really, really pretty.
@coolaggro
Oh I don't disagree. I acruelly prefer the convenience of digital (especially on handhelds) and on my Gaming PC with STEAM where I have to go digital, I noticed I was playing a lot more games than usual. I bought a second Switch. Might wait for mega sales and build a digital collection for easy on the go access.
@Dm9982
Yup Yup. Exactly. I was wondering when people were gonna realize there's a price to be paid for online accounts.
Personally I still think it's worth it, but there is definitely a price to be paid for it.
The music is so beautiful
Assuming I'll have a Switch, I'll buy this day one.
I'm seeing a lot of negativity here surrounding this game. I Am Setsuna's appeal is simple to understand: If you like SNES-era JRPGs, you'll enjoy it. It thrives exclusively within the realms of nostalgia. Several gameplay systems have been nearly copied from Chrono Trigger. Its marvelous piano-only soundtrack is also noteworthy.
I'll get it for PS4 or Switch the day it drops to $10 or less.
From what I've seen and heard, it ain't worth more than that.
I doubt that I'll buy this seeing as there is no physical copy, and SE will probably have the gall to demand a retail-ish asking price on the eShop. I'll consider importing the Japanese version if it includes an English-language version on the cartridge... otherwise... nah.
Second game after Zelda I feel, especially if there is a physical release in UK
Hope for a physical release.
@TheWretchedCrow It's listed on the Argos website. I'm not sure Argos have ever listed digital before so I'm guessing it's physical.
@JTMnM The issue is, it doesn't do anything more than mimic Chrono Trigger's battle system and retell a poor man's version of FFX's story. I might as well just play Chrono Trigger.
For those who enjoy it, that's fine, the game isn't flawed or anything. But it comes off as soulless to me.
Also, why was the video taken down?
@Monkeyofthefunk
I'm guessing that it's an error on their part since I can't find a listing from any retailers here. If it's not I'll import it over at the speed of light.
@TheWretchedCrow I know what you mean. I was going to place an order but I'm not sure about it now.
