The Xenoblade Chronicles series is one that has gained strong momentum over the years for its scale, storytelling and music. With the hotly-anticipated sequel in development and currently without a solid release date beyond "2017", it's encouraging to hear that composer Yasunori Mitsuda has now completed the recording and mixing has already begun.
The composer also remarked that he hopes Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtrack will surpass that of the first game - high hopes indeed. Mitsuda is known for creating the soundtrack to beloved game Chrono Trigger and of course the previous Xenoblade entries. Mitsuda also commented that 150 people have worked on the music and that it is among the biggest projects of its type in the world of gaming right now. He also comments that a soundtrack will likely be released, however no date has been given.
With the music appearing to be near completion, does this give good reason to believe the game will be available sooner rather than later this year? We'll no doubt have a solid release date after E3, but in the meantime let us know what you think by posting a comment.

Nice. I hope the Soundtrack is similar to Xenoblade Chronicles. I did not really like the Soundtrack of Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Never played Xenoblade Chronicles game before, but thinking of picking this one despite that.
Edit: Actually, I might get a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U and play that before the next one comes out.
I like XCX's soundtrack a lot more. I wish we we're getting more of that.
It's nice to know the soundtrack is coming along well, it's more the localization and voice acting I want to know about.
By which I mean please let it be the team that did Xenoblade Chronicles, or at least as competent and good with voice actor picks as they were.
I like the music and scope of Xenoblade Chronicles, but the gameplay does nothing for me. XC2 will have to go some to convince me it's worth my money. Haven't even started XCX yet, but looking forward to it, despite my issues with XC.
I find it very hard to believe this will be released this year, but I hope so.
I must finally push through ad finish X before that though!
I loved both Xenoblade games, I just hope this one is online multiplayer. I was so hyped for the last one thinking my brother and I could play online a la PSO.
Wondering if I should pick up Xenoblade Chronicles for New 3DS or wait and see if they'll bring it to Switch, even by Virtual Console
This will release this year.
Preordering both the game and soundtrack as soon as I can (once release dates or limited editions are confirmed).
Finishing up the first Xenoblade Chronicles, and I love the soundtrack to that game.
Even if the soundtrack is better than the first Xenoblade Chronicles, it still won't be as good as Chrono Trigger's soundtrack.
This making it to release in 2017 looks more and more plausible as time goes on. Which is great, I am more hyped for this game than most any other this year (since I already have P5).
@Neon_Blues
Chrono Cross was a far better OST than Trigger. (IMO)
Tell me what you like baby. Tell me that you like butter.
As far as this guy goes I'm only familiar with Chrono Trigger's and Mario Party 1's soundtrack, but the former is one of the finest soundtracks of all time so I'd say that's a pretty good mark. Both Xenoblade, and Xenoblade X had really good soundtracks though, it's going to be tough to suprass... Hopefully he does better work than the new artist though, I'm sorry but I don't like the overly anime cartoonish style they chose to go with this one.
The only thing I really hate about this series is that MMO battle style.
Xenoblade 2 + Philharmonic Orchestra + Alan Menken = OMG...!!
Excited for this but still need to complete the first game. Sooooo long
@abbyhitter I'd rather not, Xenoblade Chronicles X is a bunch of jumbled noise compared to the original's composition.
Looks good to me. I just hope they changed the figting system. I got really bored in XCX.
Xenoblade Chronicles has an incredible soundtrack, gonna be hard to top.
Xenoblade Chronicles X on the other hand has one of the worst soundtracks I've heard. Would have turned the music off if there was an option. I couldn't stand it.
XCX has an amazing OST. Too bad Sawano doesn't seem to be involved with this project.
XC had one or two decent tracks, but most of the music was forgettable.
I've enjoyed both games, and I loved XCX and its OST. So excited for this.
I still have to finish the first two! I need a clone. She can go to work while I play games and bang on the taiko all day.
@AlphaJaguar Why do you call it jumbled noise? I loved music with lyrics. The final boss music and skell flying theme is my favorite.
Very excited about this one! Loved the original and X. I'm still skeptical it won't get pushed to early 2018 to not crowd the release schedule, but we'll see!
Pumped
@abbyhitter Because music with lyrics just isn't as universal as an instrumental. Outside of Black Tar, the rest of the songs just didn't sit well with me. The original Xenoblade Chronicles on the other hand had some genuinely emotional melodies that X just could not re-create.
This could be the best JRPG this generation.
As much as I love the idea of another Xenoblade, it's too soon (for me, anyway). I'm still not quite done with the Wii original (I'm grinding levels to beat the final boss), and then I want to play X before the upcoming Switch game. Man, I hate how little time I have for gaming. Or maybe I'm just playing them wrong (RPGs have never been my game of choice)....
it's coming THIS YEAR!
I've played XCX but not the original, though I do have it. I really should play it, it took me a while to get into XCX but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed. It's not equal to BotW, but the a great game none the less and the landscape was amazing.
I really like the look of the original game, with the landscapes being designed around 2 giant mech things. I much prefer playing as a proper character rather than an avatar too.
I don't remember any of the music from XCX to be honest (except that really annoying daytime and nighttime music in the city!). But if it's anything close to Chronotrigger's music we're in for a treat!
@Zeargo I believe 2 is a possible sequel to the first one on wii(also available on eshop) unless you don't care about continuity i would play that one prior to 2.
Soundtrack is complete? TOTALLY coming out this year for sure.
@Browny I never played Cross... Never had a PlayStation...
This is terrific news!!! That game looks incredible! I loved the first one (up until the last 2 or 3 hours) and I love X! This one will be a huge for me and my Switch
@BenAV Perfectly said. XC music was awesome, Guar Plains is 1 of my favorite all time songs. Whoever decided to put lyrics into a JRPG soundtrack should be fired, almost made me not want to get into my sdkell. And it was all way too loud, missed half of the dialog.
XC might be my favorite jrpg ever, up there w/ my first ever FF7. XcX was a great place to visit, a better open world game than FFXV, but it's nowhere near xC. I really hope xC is a true sequel to the firdt, 50 or 100 years later, or the usual 1,000. JRPG love their 1,000 timelines.
@Nik-Davies Its an easily 100+ hour game. If you start now, you may just finish it before the sequel comes out. XD
1) Do you people really hate the XCX soundtrack, or do you hate the choices for New Los Angeles music...because while some of the music is absolutely breathtaking like the Noctilum day theme, or atmospheric and offbeat like the cavern music, both day and night themes for NLA were annoying and grating and they played in the hub area where you spent a lot of time.
2) Is it just me or does the art style of this game feel like a downgrade in style from both previous games?
While XC was limited by SD hardware and pushing the aging hardware of the Wii and portable hardware of the 3DS, it still looked amazing. XCX was an astoundingly beautiful sci-fi game with a strong anime influence.
What has changed in Xenoblade 2 looks...very generic compared to the unique organic/metallic fusion and retro-mech artistry of the previous titles.
I think this to me confirms that 2017 is still on track....at least for Japan. I'm still of mixed mined about if localization will be done by then...but they seem to say it will be. Localization was delayed for the first game because they weren't even going to release it int the West until NoE decided they wanted to and would pay for it. Localization was delayed for the second one because WiiU development was stuck in 2004 and they needed to get SOMETHING out in Japan. If this one was properly planned (keeping in mind Switch was supposed to be launched last November) then localization has been in parallel with development like the "A list titles" at Nintendo. Sensible since they're promoting it as a console launch window game. I'm not convinced, but the soundtrack wrapping up usually happens near the end of development. That gives months for localization.
@jrejr I hated the music of XCX more before I actually kind of worked, and I didn't expect that. But the loop was too short and became redundant. If the tracks were longer the vocals wouldn't have been terrible.
@Dakt Wow, if XCX was streamlined, I dread to imagine how complex XC1 was!
@Action51 The art to me looks basically like XC1 art style rendered in an upgraded XCX engine....and maybe with a little BotW treatment added in to the semi-shading aspects (which makes sense since I belive the BotW engine is at least partially the XCX engine.)
Still not convinced it will realease this year. But good to hear anyway. The soundtrack was actually the only thing id call great in the X entry. Sawano is quite boring in the anime world with a few great songs here and there (like X (not the game)) but Xeno X was just sick. Give the man videogames.
Xenoblade was nice overall soundtrackwise but if i remember it right there was to much whiny stuff for me. I hope this ones a little bit more on the positive side. Anyway nice soundtrack incoming.
@Zeargo - Have just recently returned to XCX after taking a break. It's an amazing treat for any JRPG fan.
If you like non-linear, open world, party building, gear optimizing games with sidequests all over that are frequently more than fetch quests, this game will more than satisfy.
I'm about 140 hours in now, and not really that close to the end. People talk about Witcher 3"rabbit holes"...well XCX actually has that too. One offhand mission can eventually lead to new recruit able party members, an entire new arms manufacturer opening shop in NLA, or just some basic rewards and humorous dialogue with a weird Back to the Future spoof character...you never really know which is kind of nice.
@NEStalgia I think it's the cutesy face character design I'm not liking. Western Dude bro game critics hated the XCX "faces" and I think this was in response to that...they went full cartoony to please the critics who were never the target audience for this franchise anyway.
XC on wii literally surpassed Oot and Sm64 as my favourite video game. XCX is fantastic too. Really looking forward to playing XC2 and listening to the soundtrack.
The soundtracks for XC and XCX were both amazing, but I have to give the edge to Sawano's XCX ost. It's all down to personal preference though.
@Zeargo Both are great games, but if I were you I would consider playing Xenoblade 1 instead of XCX. Not only is it considered to be the better game, but the new game looks like it's somewhat of a sequel to it. It's also on the Wii U eShop for $20
I can only take things at face value, but if they say this will be out this year, I'll cautiously believe it. It's such a high profile title, and I know Nintendo doesn't want to get into delays and such... but I also know they don't want to cut into their other games' profits either. Ah well. Bottom line is I can't wait to play it as soon as possible
@Dakt @8itmap_k1d I think it's fantastic that the two games take different approaches to the world. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with you about X being streamlined. I enjoyed it, but found it much more obtuse and thought it took me about 20 hours before I really understood what I was doing and what the game was.
I'd be happy to see a return to the format of the original. It felt to me like a mixture of linear and open world simply because the areas were so large and it was easy to travel between them. That said, I love both games
It will release in Japan this Holiday Season. The West will get it next Spring.
@Zeargo Someone's probably already said this, but I can't be bothered to read the comments. If you're intending to play Xenoblade 2, play the original Xenoblade Chronicles, since 2 is a direct sequel. I have played X, but I am going to play the original before 2.
"We'll no doubt have a solid release date after E3..."
Really? Cause I certainly doubt we will.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Thanks for the new avatar. It saves me some "work" I never got around to.
Let me explain: From the first time I saw one of your avatars (and this must already be some years back) I thought: "My, that looks like it could be Perfume, funny that someone in such a forum would be using this as an avatar. Need to find out if it's really them, just to be sure and then I'm gonna comment him on that: Nice Perfume avatar..."
And each time you updated it I thought: "Oh yes, THERE is something I still wanted to do". But, oh well, you know how it is with these small things...
So now, finally: Nice avatars, all of them! Reminds me to spin up some Perfume on my player...
Good, I'm will consider the purchase. Eventually it looks less good graphically. Have they dumbed it down (the setting does seems to appeal to a more younger and japanese audience) to make it more appealing to eastern people?
I saw that X sold in Japan half copies in comparison to Europe, how is it possible?
@JunkRabbit Haha, why thank you! I'm feeling good this Friday so I felt like putting a silly avatar up (I was going through my reaction gifs, because you know the ladies are so very expressive... but I wanted something with all three of them). It is a bit of a running joke at this point. My username often means I'm mistaken for a guy, so when I started here I wanted something "feminine" that wasn't gaming related, since I have a ton of hobbies/interests and my membership here shows my gaming interest in itself. Well, I found out my brother lurks here and often looks for my posts and because I'm such a HUGE Perfume daifan he could always find me easily. So that enforced a theme until it became my trademark here. Always happy to see a fellow Perfume fan. ...Or to convert others to the gospel...
Listening to Tokyo Girl right now, actually.
@Action51
I answer your question.
1. Maybe I haven't play XCX yet, but from far my experience played JRPG especially Final Fantasy series, I would like to hear the OST with a fushion FF 12 + FF 13 for serious Battle songs (Mostly Orchestrated theme with or without Latin choir), fushion of FF 8 + FF 9 style for Town place / Dungeons / Events, Modern touch ala FF X-2, Epic Goosebump OST like inside Bevelle Underground Via Infinito floor 40 and under 80.
2. The art style for XC2 looks like Anime style. For me it was a good sign, since their looking much like Tales of series, unlike XCX with realistic appearance but with Big Scary Anime eyes.
@Zeargo I also downloaded it on the Wii U eShop
AMAZING GAME!!! (even if it doesn't look as good as many other games)
I'd love to have Nintendo drop a Xenoblade Chronicles HD for the Switch at E3. I'd love to play it again as soon as I finish Zelda.
Hopefully Xenoblade 2 is just as good.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Ha, just clicked your profile (somehow it never occurred to me before). It could have been so easy...
I have been out of touch with the latest Perfume for a while, I think the last two albums I bought were LEVEL3 and JPN. My favorite album up to then is definitely still Delta though. Has some nice nods to '84 and '87 styles...
Well, time for grocery shopping. Guess what I'm going to listen to on the way now...
I really hope XC2 brings back the mechanic from the original where you could see glimpses into the future. I really missed that when I played XCX
@Zeargo the first is worth your time, definitely.
HYPE. Just hoping this gets released this year but I can see it taking longer for the Western release. But it'll be worth the wait regardless.
@Action51 You might be right, though I kind of think the first one had the "cutesy faces" too. It's just with the lack of fidelity they were ambiguous where as now with an HD game we can see them more fully realized as intended.
I also think Nintendo in general seems to be moving to more anime art design in general (which is, if you look at NES and SNES era manuals how they started out until the N64 era.) BotW was intended as anime-esque as well.
Also, most of the brass at Monolith are the guys responsible for classic FF which usually had the cutesy aesthetic. It can't be coincidence that as Square keeps copying their game designs but moving toward ever more photorealistic graphics even in the FF7 remake, Monolith might be inspired to take the series back to the roots of their own personal design ideas they used in FF, knowing their fans now are looking for someone to carry that torch.
Personally I don't mind it either way, but I think it does more to distance XC's identity from XCX, especially if they ever intend to continue the XCX series on its own.
Yasunori Mitsuda? He's a legend, I love his music!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I still regularly listen to the XC soundtrack. He'll have to do well to surpass it.
Everybody raves about the composer for BotW but it has about 4 pieces of music that are no longer than 30 seconds. I miss the hummable tunes from Wind Waker
XC music - amazing
XCX music - not so much
Actually, I retract that statement. Nothing more fun than hearing the 'rapping' during battles. '....whole different planet'
@ryando I love butter.
Both XC and XCX had great tracks and also tracks that were downright silly... but it sure was fun regardless 😘
Japan this year, rest of the world 2018
Right on I will be getting this game day one. Always loved the music in xenoblade games.
"Almost completed Xenoblade Chronicles 2!!!.....'s music.
@David_Dudeney The original has a combat mechanic that I don't want to mention specifically so as not to spoil the fun for you, but let's just say it was missing from X and I really hope it's back in 2.
I really hope you enjoy the original!!!
As long as the music is more appetizing than Xenoblade Chronicles X. That game had some decent tracks but also quite a few average ones.
@thesilverbrick Try doing all (or most) of the quests that opened after MC. You will level up without noticing it. That is, if you like quest-ing, obviously.
@Action51 I think the problem with the style change it's not only the generic anime faces, but also the body proportions as well. See that guy standing at the end? Looks like a child wearing over-the-top huge sci-fi gear. This actualy reminds more of me that guy from Kingdom Hearts. Never played that game, but the guy looks similarly cartoony.
Edits: better English spelling... (I hope).
@leo13 Thanks! I'm really looking forward to it
I'm really pleased to see a Xenoblade sequel coming to Switch (new HD Xenoblade on handheld!). Even more pleased to see it releasing year one. Even if it gets delayed, it'll still be releasing relatively early in the Switch's lifespan, which is really awesome.
Can't wait to hear the music too.
It may release in Japan this year, but I highly doubt it'll be localized until at least early 2018. Is love to be wrong, though.
I think these games look really interesting and fun from an adventuring standpoint but i found the battle system really unfun. I wish they made these games with the option to play an arcade/action style of combat instead. I always thought different combat options would be a great way to make various RPG's more appealing to a wider audience.
Didn't like X as much, didn't have too much of a story. Xenoblade Chronicles was amazing. I will be buying 2. Don't love the art style, but will still be great.
I haven't played XC yet (too big of a game to download and tooo expensive to buy used) and I'm only halfway though XCX. However, I think certain parts of the XCX soundtrack are good (boss battles and themes for the outside areas), but the New L.A songs are bad.
I love the first game and bought the N3DS just to play it again so I really have lots of hope that this game will deliver! Reading this article just made me even more excited and I'm really hopeful it will be released this year!
@Zeargo please just play xenoblade chronicles
Xenoblade Chronicles and the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy are the best games I've ever played (DOOM might be up there after I finish it, my save file was corrupted at the end of chapter 6). Make sure you have some good audio equipment for it, that's half the enjoyment.
Also, an 8 year old said I dabbed terribly. Please make my day better by letting me know another person has the chance to play Xenoblade Chronicles.
That's nice and all but will it be anyones time in this game?
From a business perspective it makes more sense for Nintendo to release this game in early 2018. Mario will dominate the holidays and an early 2018 release would help spread out their big releases.
@Braok Not a fan of Phoenix Wright series, does not look impressive to me. Xenoblade Chronicles does however, but just chose not to get into it. I was hoping to buy Xenoblade Chronicles X from eShop, but it's big game so I'll see if I can still get it from a store before buying it from the eShop. Someone said the Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii is there too, so I'll get that and play it if is there. Hope that makes your day better!
I want this to not come sooner. Although that seems harsh, this game needs all of the details that Chronicles had to be a true successor.
@Zeargo it is there,
ty
...Please be localised by NoE.... Please be localised by NoE... Please be localised by NoE....
The subtitle suggests even more to me we europes wont be getting the game before 2019.
He's a pretty talented composer, and I've been a fan of a few of his ideas within songs. This game is prob the #1 reason for me owning a switch atm (behind Indies and maybe a decent vc). And I weirldy love that these are exclusive for us loyals who still give Nintendo $. After following the first games development for (I believe) 4 brutal yrs, all I can say is...fingers crossed for no delays. Hoping it will be an epic.
@Browny Chrono Cross's soundtrack is one of my favorite of all time. So I'll second this opinion.
I loved the Music in Xenoblade Chronicles, but not so much X. But in all honesty that was probably just the NLA Hub music that ruins it for me.
I'm buying a Switch when this game comes out. I hope there's a bundle, like with XCX
I'll be shocked if this doesn't slip to 2018
@Kevlar44
Me too, I prefer the adventure more in these games than the combat.
The 1st one was fun but the crappy beat boxing/rap was pure crap and ruined the game for me. Hopefully after all of the complaints on the 1st one they skip that rubbish
Sawano im sry that i said your anime songs are kinda boring compared to xenoblade xs soundtrack. Your the god of hype. Seriously i dont know of music that makes me so pumped up like yours. Its the music of fighting further and breaking through the darkness. I love it so much. Thank you.
You not making the ost for xenoblade 2 is a loss to me.
