i'd rather have a bespoke version than either an upgraded ps3/x360/vita version, or a downgraded ps4/xb1 version. they got their dev tools sorted out. maybe they can include the world famous princess peach booty shake.

For a portable FIFA it looks like FIFA.

Haven't been worried about the Switch yet, but the framerate+graphics on that portable DQ Heroes have me worried.

On one hand, that absolutely looks like a port/graphic level of an Xbox 360 or PS3 Fifa. On the other hand, its the latest Fifa on a 6 inch screen, how detailed do the graphics need to be?

It's not "just" a portable FIFA though. It needs to measure up to home console standards, especially if they're going to be charging the full AU$90 for it.

I don't think that any FIFA fan thinks about buying the Switch just because the game will be there. Surely it's cool to have a fully-fledged portable version of the game, but I can bet FIFA on every other platform will outsell the Switch version.

For those worried about portable DQ framerates, commercials rarely use actual gameplay footage.
Remember how choppy portable BotW looked in the Switch reveal trailer? That wasn't representative of the final gameplay either.

Hard to tell much about the visuals though they're hardly mindblowing. And to those saying they look nice for a portable, remember the Switch is also supposedly a console as well. I've said it before that I'm only interested in home gaming. If this looks worse and has less features than the other versions then it's going to sell less and EA will have packed their bags again, quicker than you can say "unprecedented partnership".

Ok the FIFA shown in the commercial, that definitely looks like the PS3/Xbox 360 version of the game. I don't think games like FIFA and COD are going to be a thing on the Switch, but you never know. I personally really wanted a version equivalent to the PS4 so i could ditch PS4 altogether. But I think that's a lot to ask from Switch's point of view because it just doesn't have enough power to run the Next Gen FIFA engine.

I can't watch the video just now as I'm out and hardly any data but that screenshot of Hazard on the main page looks last gen for sure.

I personally doubt the visuals will reach the PS4/X1 levels purely from the fact that the size of the Switch limits its technical prowess. Saying that, what's most important is that the version matches in content and game modes.

My biggest fear is that it'll suffer the same as the early EA, Ubisoft & WB titles on the Wii U (except Arkham City); offer a version with content missing and announce reduced / no DLC support and then they moan and stop supporting their releases when no one buys their inferior versions.

Being Japanese based, I wonder if Konami would better support it with Winning Elev...BWAH HAH HAH!

Other than Gran turismo sport and the crash bandicoot remake / remaster (whatever the correct phrase is) I can see my ps4 being pretty redundant in the future

Well... there is ages to go as FIFA has no release date and it at least looks like its running smooth - not mind blowing but you can't tell squat from it running on the Switch screen.

Just wait for the final version to be revealed, this is the same early video used in the first video for dragonquest switch.

To me it looks awesome and a must buy already. So yeah i will buy it from day one.

If it's for the 18 season, it won't be out for another five months, so yeah, it's probably still in development.

There's also the very real possibility that when docked, the game bumps up things like shaders and texture quality, as it then has active cooling and unlimited power for the CPU and GPU to do their thing.

I haven't yet talked to any developers working with the docked/undocked settings for Switch games, so I'm still interested in hearing more about the possibilities.

With respect to your site, Damien, I really wish you wouldn't edge these gamers on. You shouldn't allow them to speculate over facts. Those ridiculous last gen port rumours you mentioned in your column above should have been left in the past where they became irrelevant when EA confirmed that it would be a custom built version of Fifa '18. It's as simple as that.

You know how some of these gamers are. They'll come to their own conclusions regardless of evidence, if you give them the motivation.

When a game looks terrible (graphics) we are quickly reminded by the fanbs the Switch is a portable console although Nintendo promotes it primarily as a home console. Listen to their ads and statements.
However based on that advert the graphics look like crap for the worlds most powerful portable.
Hell, I have seen football on the iPad better looking than that. Everytime a game looks like crap fanbs say it is too early to judge yet I find that many months later the final results usually look the same. Let time tell.

I like that the Switch for what it is and what it isn't is a powerful powerful console compared to the opposition.

Games like FIFA will fail or succeed based on how successfully the portable element is embraced by the public.

EA+Nintendo+Sport = poor. That was the formula from the last two decades. Will it change now? We can hope.

I'm slightly dismayed with the whole capacitive touch screen situation, partly for the reason that they suggest bringing the system around to parties. Durability just isn't the same for those guys as have been the case with the softer screens Nintendo has typically applied.

The price of extra controllers would put me off getting FIFA for Switch.

If FIFA is good it's a must buy for me.

I just wish they would have brought Madden as well.

Yeah mate I don't think for one minute this is the final version but I don't have much faith in EA when it comes to their frame of mind when considering Ninty hardware

If FIFA on Switch sells well enough I fully expect to see Madden (and more) announced fairly soon after launch. It is a shame Nintendo didn't manage to convince them from the outset but thats the reality - sports games have historically sold poorly on their platforms for all the reasons already mentioned in this very thread. Theres hope, at least.

This take it anywhere party scenario is more inclined towards the Japanese market. I don't see it catching on like that in the West. Many will play it on the go but with themselves mainly like bus or train rides,just like u did with 3ds. Party mode in the West will happen but more so when docked. Yes mate the touch screens of old are far more durable.best buy a carry case mate

@Hotfusion Nintendo has purely marketed it as a hybrid. Have you not watched any of their commercials, seen any of their events? You sound like you are just parroting what others have said.

Take this commercial for example
1) First starts by showing DQ playing on as a home system
2) Then cuts to the person taking it out of the dock and playing it as a handheld system
3) Then later on cuts to someone playing FIFA as a handheld and then setting it on the table to play it as a tabletop system

Has nobody thought to stop and think that since the Switch version of FIFA doesn't even exist yet, they are clearly using stock footage from some older game?

Wait, let me get this straight. You're telling me that this version won't be as good as the PS4 version because it doesn't look like the PS4 version? Even if it has all the content, and includes a smooth frame-rate. Even if it allows you to take the full experience with you and get into a local multiplayer match without needing to purchase another controller? Even if it turns out that this is early footage and the final product looks decent next to the PS4's version? You mean to tell me that you'd rather tether yourself to your television with limited controls and no HD Rumble for a bit of extra fidelity?

@sillygostly Exactly! The Switch is a home console, not a portable so it needs a proper version of FIFA not a downgraded, feature less port. For the sake of the Switch in regards to non Nintendo fans purchasing the system, FIFA 18 needs to be up there with the Xbox One version at least.

Don't know if it makes a difference but the FIFA version they showed was the undocked version, so doesn't that mean it's running at 720p? So in my mind it's not going to match up to the docked 1080p version & obviously be less graphically than PS4/Xbox one.
I'm more a Pro Evo guy so I'm not too bothered but FIFA go the go should help shift a few systems just because it's FIFA.

I don't really trust EA to care either, FIFA was never a big seller on Nintendo systems. And if you ask me, they were never pretty games in the first place, so I wouldn't buy it for the graphics no matter how many polygons they shoved in there.

This version shown on the Switch advert clearly isn't PS3 footage, but neither is it PS4 level [which we know isn't possible anyway]. It's definitely somewhere in between. And as pointed out, this is just a simulation in handheld mode.

@Beechbone I have been playing FIFA for over 20 years and I honestly would like to have a console quality FIFA title on the go, and it is absolutely a wet dream to have the same career mode save data no matter where you are.... I had hopes for the vita FIFA titles but they failed because, you know, it's EA... I just hope this switch version would have proper career mode and would not look like FIFA9x (thinking about the 3ds version)

It's always going to come down to how much you are going to be playing games in portable mode. If you will mostly play at home, you aren't going to choose the Switch version of anything.

Looks fine to me. I mean heck, this is just what the Switch is. Maybe it's not for everyone , and that's cool. But it's for me. I've got no qualms with this.

It should be on par, features wise.

But I think people are not being real about Switch's capabilities. The only games that will look on par with PS4 or X1 are non realistic games, such as Disgaea 5. But FIFA... you can't take less powerful hardware and expect equivalent results.

It'll probably end up roughly on par with Wii U version while unlocked, and somewhere in between Wii U and X1 while docked. That's just the reality of the situation.

But to me, that's totally cool. A little less visual spectacle on TV for a portable version seems like a reasonable trade off. And that's the story of the Switch. Decent TV console play and incredible handheld play in one. Can't have it all. obviously?

@JaxonH I'm also happy with that. FIFA isn't a reason I'm buying a Switch. What I meant was that people who love Fifa, CoD etc won't buy a Switch if there is a better version available. As I've said in previous comments, games like that aren't what Nintendo consoles are about but they do shift systems. A lack of high spec 3rd party games is why the Wii U failed.

I just hope that people understand what the Switch is about. It's an alternative where you can have fun playing online or sat on the same sofa. I think the advertising will help get that message across but it won't necessarily convert PS & Xbox fans that can afford one console.

FIFA is looking pretty good on the Switch not sure about table top play tho could be too small.

Focus on Wii U owners who enjoy Nintendo games on console, 3DS owners who enjoy Nintendo games on handheld, Wii U and 3DS owners who want both, Vita owners who want the real deal in portable console gaming, PS4/X1/PC owners who can afford a second console and/or are willing to buy a second console if it's appealing enough- people who see much better Nintendo games this time around, a sexier system and more functionality, JRPG fans since the Switch (like 3DS) will likely end up very popular in Japan and see alot of Japanese games localized, and lastly a few casual gamers (not soccer mom casual, but people who game, but maybe haven't owned a console since the PS2/GameCube).

But ya, PS4/X1 owners who can't afford a second console and/or have no interest in games like Zelda, Splatoon or Mario... just gonna stick with what they have.

I have never played FIFA in my life, but if the price goes down to $25 I might get it for that LAN feature. I love that about this console. Local multiplayer forever!

Looks pretty rough, but I'd bet it's an alright compromise for those who are onboard with the Switch being portable. The reason I can't get behind this reasoning though is that you're still paying home console game prices for games that have obviously been scaled back so that they work in portable form.

Haha, ya I've got a 50 game back catalog on Vita, couple dozen on Wii U still, not to mention X1, PS4, PC and 3DS.

Buuut, I really like the Switch and never miss a console. So that backlog is gonna have to get put on the back burner even longer (truth is I'll never get around to em, the rate at which I'm buying games far exceeds the rate I'm playing, but I like the library like a book lover likes to have all the best books for reading at a time of their choosing)

True, but even in portable form it's still gonna be a little higher quality than PS3/360 versions, both of which are full price games. Just like a game on a low end PC costs the same as a game on a high end PC.

Bye bye Nintendo, you had me with the Wii U, I have a nice library of games, invested in the platform with great titles and digital downloads. I have a nice library on the 3DS too (and 2DS) so that's my mobile gaming sorted. I have a PS4 and great games that will not be making it to the Switch at anytime soon.

I'm a big Nintendo fan but this is a mobile device, masquerading as a console that seems only marginally more powerful than a Wii U - great if you want that level of power on the go, but sorry, not for me.

See you in a couple of years and maybe a Tegra chip upgrade, but I've had it with hoping Nintendo console internals are going to provide the same graphical level of games on offer on other consoles. Why, why, why do you insist on limiting the power of your consoles so that 3rd parties are just put off by? I know Nintendo can perform their magic to get the best out of the system, but what about everyone else?

For those who say graphics aren't everything, I agree to an extent, the focus on fun doesn't always need amazing graphics but take the example of ARMS, are you kidding me? I'm currently playing Uncharted 4 and the PS4's power is giving me such a fun experience that this might be the first game I'm so completely engaged with since Resident Evil 4.

Fair play mate,I don't have that many maybe 10,I have just started Dukenukem 3D megaton edition for vita. I got lucky with that game I downloaded it in a sale then it dissappeared from ps store. Anyhow I normally buy Ninty machines at launch but not this time.just not feeling it. It's probably because of what happened with wii u,so I will tread more carefully this time

Knowing EA they'll port the PS3/360 version of Fifa 18 minus a load of features.

Lets keep in mind we're only seeing it in portable low power mode, not docked mode, so we don't know what if any differences there are.

It's notable that I don't think I've seen a single Japanese Switch commercial show a game on a TV at all. It's being sold purely as a handheld there, other than the footnote at the end that shows the game docking to the TV when they display the product name. But the commercials themselves are all handheld. Not surprising, but interesting.

People are going to complain, frame rates, graphics, whatever. I would take a portable FIFA and DQ with me wherever I go. Happily. Huge FIFA fan, and I'll tell you how it looks is not the concern. How does it play, what modes are available(career and ultimate, I don't wxpect my journey but we will see) and does the online work well enough for matches.

If those boxes are checked yes, that's a hat trick for me. Some people have the wrong expectations I believe. It's not a portable PS4, it's a Switch. I played a ton of games on the 3ds and none of them looked anywhere as good as this. And it didn't kill my enjoyment/

@JaxonH Yeah, the price points are typically the same regardless, but if you're paying the same price for something so scaled back without benefits (like a PS3 or 360 version) I'd say you're being suckered. I think Black Ops 3 ran into this, where the last generations were extremely subpar.

I'm more interested in DQH than FIFA, but that player's model and animation suggest another illustration of how trivial Switch can make the graphical "gap" many like to lament. Then again, we've all discussed it before - it's not just Nintendo catching up at the pace they see fit, but the console arms race gradually deflating to the level of idle foot-stepping, too.

@CircuitWrangler3 Graphics and the looks of the game is the last thing I would care about FIFA on switch but when i said I wanted a version equivalent to the PS4 i meant the game playing like FIFA 18 on the next gen engine that FIFA on the PS4 would be based off, even PC got the next gen engine but only starting FIFA 16. The FIFA on PS3/Xbox 360 and PS4 are based on two different engines and I've already moved on from the last gen engine since FIFA 14 so going back would be a huge downgrade because they play differently the way the player reacts to the ball, makes touches, shoots, pass, first touches its different. I wouldn't even mind if it had the FIFA's graphics that of iPad but somehow managed to run on the next gen engine lol

Makes sense. And what better time to give it another shot than at the launch of a new multiplayer centric console.

Personally, if playing FIFA 2018 is more fun on the Switch because of the Switch's unique abilities... then I don't give a crap about the graphics being slightly worse. However, I do think that this game needs to have all the features & gameplay mechanics from the PS4/XB1 version. That's what will really decide whether this game (not the console itself) will succeed or fail.

It would be a lie to say that Nintendo has never relied on graphical power to sell their games, but they certainly have the unique ability to make their games fun to play & don't need to rely on graphics to make up for missing gameplay like many modern games.

Game footage is usually superimposed, so the framerate on DQH and the visuals on FIFA aren't necessarily representative of the retail product.

They very well could have grabbed footage of an older FIFA game on PS3/360 and used it for the commercial.

You people are all such grafx....lol. I can't even tell how good or bad FIFA looks when shown on a small screen at that distance. Look here is what we know......it is being custom built and so its grafx should end up somewhere between ps360 and ps4/xb1. Why is that not good enough? I mean does being able to see a hair sticking out of someone mole really make that much difference to the game?

I could care less as I have not played a FIFA game since the first real 3D one on the......3DO. It was actually pretty cool and quite a marvel but it seems to me like they have hardly changed it much since 20 years ago.

As to who will buy it over the other versions.......People who want home and away play. Its that simple and for most multiplat games that is going to be the deciding factor. If the home/away dynamic matters little to you then for god sakes get the ps4 version and shut up already. If home/away matters then that is a major features and some small sacrifice in graphical fidelity aint gonna mean beans.

Honestly Nintendo and main realistic sports games have mostly been a bust over the generations. I personally wish Nintendo would commit to putting out their own sports lineup for Switch (they pretty much ignored WiiU) and we would see a new Mario Golf using motion controls like the excellent TigerWoods did on Wii, a new mario strikers, mario sluggers and how about a Super Smash Mouth Football (not soccer) game that uses all the lineups and Amibos from Smash for a arcade football.

This is what I dont get about people and their expectations with Nintendo platforms.....we know what they are, we know what kind of games and more importantly unique games we will get and we know Nintendo has really never been a home for lots of FPS and Sports games.............don't fricking buy Nintendo if those are the games you love.....get a damned ps4.

As to grafx I have no faith in commercial clips......Every video I ever saw of a WiiU game looked choppy and like poop and then that was not the case when playing them. Even many of the ports so many people female dogged about were not bad at all. I played AC4, DuesEX, SplinterCell, ME3, NFSMW all on WiiU and had seen or played them on ps360 as well and for those games the grafx, frame rates, and effects were clearly better than ps360 versions.

@Pod I think I need to adjust my expectations for the type of titles that will come to the Switch and think of it as a mobile device.

What I need to accept is that the Switch can't handle certain types of games that I might want to play, so I have a PS4 for those and a Nintendo console for others.

Graphics don't make a game. For me, Fifa will need to play slickly. (If I am brutally honest, I hope Konami brings PES to Switch.)

I watch the commercial earlier this morning since it showed up in my recommendations on YT, and it was nice to watch. FIFA on the go is what I am looking forward too, can't wait to have that.

EA are not giving away first footage of FIFA 18 on a tv ad

@kobashi100 Yeah that could be the case - and I really hope so!
The thing is: A few years ago, EA released FIFA on PC with an old, outdated engine. While the console versions got the new engine, the PC version kept the old engine and looked worse than the console versions despite having superior hardware (I'm not making this up, it was mentioned in all the reviews). They did that for a few years and then finally gave the PC FIFA a proper engine as well.

(And after EA had corrected their 'mistake', Konami went on to do the same with PES - selling the PC version with an old engine.)

So you see, it's their track record of selling games with outdated engines for apparently no reason that's got me worried.

But I really hope this is not the actual footage.
Otherwise, that EA guy standing on the stage for an awful lot of time - basically saying nothing over and over again - during the Switch event would've been really pointless.
It would mean that all of it was a ruse and that EA is not supporting the Switch properly.

Looks like the the PS2 version in HD. Definitely not as good as FIFA 13 on Wii U.

@Jamotello Considering NX is a Wii U 1.5x, I doubt EA would be going to the effort of downgrading the PS4/X1 version.

Mobile port at most.

If it has all the modes and online features that the other versions have(having to pay for online makes this more of a reality now) then this is a day one buy for me. Wait until we get closer to release with direct feed footage before you judge the game on its visuals. With Switch supporting Unreal Engine 4.15 I wouldn't underestimate what kind of visuals it can put out even if it isn't going to look exactly like the PS4 version. Can't wait to play as my favorite team Bayern Munchen and being able to play on the go is a big selling point for me, especially with a game like Fifa.

I HIGHLY doubt that is gameplay of FIFA 18. EA won't show FIFA 18 off until E3. This is probably some generic FIFA stock footage that doesn't represent the final product.

Would be nice if everyone stopped crying about graphics. I'm really just hoping Nintendo pulls their head out and gives us a sequel to all the major titles they have released over the years. I'm getting sick of wondering if specific games will get over looked once again. Almost every Nintendo IP has a following/fan base and they continue to ignore. Any decent 3rd party game is welcome, but we should all know not to expect much. Nintendo fans dont deserve lousy ports but that's all we typically get. It's a double edged sword. Developers don't want to put maximum effort for minimal sales and consumers don't want to pay premium prices for minimal effort. Developers feel they are the ones taking the risk releasing on switch. All I know is that Nintendo better deliver on their IP or Switch will be my last broken dream.

I'll just point out the obvious -

FIFA 13 on Wii U is graphically superior by a substantial margin.

Alright then.

For me it's been quite obvious since the launch of the Wii that Nintendo weren't going to bend over backwards to make their systems attractive for typical AAA development anymore. Since I never really fancied those games, and played the few I had interest in on PC, it had been a while since I worried about what games were possible on Nintendo systems or not.

I think some people just need to chill abit and stop the whining! It is a Youtube copy of an advert, so the video quality has been compressed, plus videoing screens often produces downgraded video quality too. Plus they are unlikely to be the final versions of the game anyway.
I'll reserve any judgement until I see the Switch in action (only two weeks to wait!), besides I've never bought a Nintendo console for FIFA so I don't care what that game looks like.
