Re: 'The Zelda Effect' Causes Game Sales To Drop This May (Europe)

Synecdoche

@Maxz You’re kinda overthinking it. They’re just comparing May 2024 sales to May 2023. This year’s don’t match up because last May, one of the biggest games ever was released.

If you compare box office results for the month that Avengers: Endgame was released with the same month a year later, I bet the box office was down too. Because one of the biggest movies ever had been released.

Re: Saber Interactive CEO Doesn't Think $70 Video Games Are Sustainable

Synecdoche

@Phin68 I remember at least one $99.99 game on Genesis; by that math TOTK would’ve cost $200. So in a sense you could argue we did better. And it’s true that most games today have been $59.99 for some time, while development costs have increased.

On the other hand, I never asked for photorealistic everything (currently playing Stardew Valley — no ray tracing here). And I don’t believe every company who’ll claim they need to charge $70 to recoup costs, when we’ve seen so much greedflation recently. Which leads to the fact that many regular people are hurting. And not just from the last few years; wages have stagnated for my entire lifetime. And there’s no end in sight. So I agree that when push comes to shove, many may simply buy fewer games.
