Re: UK Nintendo Zones Are Now Only To Be Found In Branches Of GAME

Starwolf_UK

I pity anyone who bought the new games.

I'm still baffled that the play coin Dogs/Cats for hire never received a buff. If you had them for all the games it would allow people with no streetpasses to have a full set for all the games every 2 days with I think is pretty reasonable whereas now it is only one game and given the latest batch of games lasts about 12 seconds each it kills incentive to even bother.

Why don't I go to GAME? My nearest store is 6 miles away. I'm not doing a 12 mile round trip for the possibility of 6 Streetpass Mii Plaza hits.

Re: Poll: Are You Still a Miitomo Regular, or Has The Great Mii Q & A Lost Its Charm?

Starwolf_UK

My device (droid4x) was rooted. Natively the app doesn't work on rooted devices (who knows why Nintendo probably thinks all rooted users are pirates or something...given how much of it is sever side I'm not exactly sure what you could defraud) unless you use some third party hacks.

One of the updates blocked the hacks I was using to make the app work. I then unrooted my device. App still doesn't work.

So I stopped using it because it stopped working though my use was really collecting 70 My Nintendo coins that honestly I don't actually need due to there being so little My Nintendo content (which I think is a good thing, Club Nintendo was a total nightmare to casual consumers).

Re: Video: Potential Pokémon Sun & Moon Starter Evolution Types Revealed

Starwolf_UK

This does assume the official website is actually correct and is correct 100% of the time.

Well the official site has leaked things before (e.g. Mega Slowbro, where the Korean site got embargo date wrong and put the page live about a week early) but it has also made mistakes (it showed a screenshot or footage of Blaziken using Ice Punch).

Re: Yo-kai Watch Battles Alone in the UK Charts

Starwolf_UK

FE Fates is unlikely to chart too high as Special edition, Conquest and Birthright will almost certainly be classed as separate games.

Chart-track might surprise us by combining the SKU but given they don't for Pokemon it is unlikely.

Re: The Donkey Kong High Score Has Been Topped Again

Starwolf_UK

@LinkSword There is a timer. When bonus reaches 0 death happens. That particular one is the kill screen because of programming issues which make the timer very small (the bonus gets so high it loops back to almost 0).

Level 256 in Pac-Man is another famous example of a kill screen.

At the end of the day these games were not meant to be played for hours and the kill screen is somewhat a relief as it sets an end. There are some arcade games where there is no kill screen or ending and human endurance is effectively the high score limit at high skill levels.

Re: Digital Foundry Puts the Star Fox Zero Resolution and Framerate to the Test

Starwolf_UK

@A01 I guess Digital Foundary does not have a Gamepad with video out. Although, IIRC you can make the Gamepad screen show on the TV instead and vice versa (which makes me wonder if the game is actually rendering two 1280x720 screens).

However, it does leave me wondering how much the frame drops are influenced by what the Gamepad is seeing. It reminds me of GoldenEye time attacks where the strategy on many stages is to stare down as much as possible in order to mimimise frame drops (less graphics on screen).

Re: Miitomo Continues Early Momentum in Leading Download Charts and App Engagement

Starwolf_UK

I think we need longer than one week here. I heard some Japanese impressions recently which were finding they need a way to group or filter friends as they simply had too many answers and comments from people they didn't really know so were stuck with having to delete a load of people (on other social networks you can mute people) and some others were feeling a bit burned out by it as well.

I have no friends that use it but I'm okay with that as it means I spend less time getting the my Nintendo points (which I'm unlikely to actually need but earning them 70% faster than I was is nice).

@Freeon-Leon Facebook without friends you can still join groups, comment on content and generate content, like and follow things as well as have a login for many websites. Miitomo is a lot more limited in this respect.

@MetaSmasher To copy and paste what I was told. Miitomo will not work on a rooted Android phone. A workaround that you can do is that if you have xposed, you can install the "Root Cloak" module (make sure you whitelist Miitomo) then download Miitomo security bypasser (http://bit.ly/21F3vZD), then it should work. Do remember to turn on the root cloak otherwise it still
doesn't work (this step baffled me for a while)

Re: Nintendo of Europe Rolls Out Official Online Stores In More Countries

Starwolf_UK

Technically didn't these stores (and more) exist for the New 3DS Ambassador systems?

The accessories part of the shop (3DS power plugs, Kid Icarus cards+stand) has existed for a few years in Germany.

Still I'd prefer to have a spare parts/refurbished systems store like America has. Germany can order spare parts (at fairly expensive delivery cost) but if you're in the UK you have to send the system for repair to get the parts which is crazy.

Re: Guide: Getting Started With My Nintendo

Starwolf_UK

All the games and themes say they can redeemed one more time.

@ikki5 @Alshain01 Thing is you don't actually need that much time. 1000 points can be made in 6 months no problem by farming weekly/daily missions:
Weekly - access eShop, visit My Nintendo, visit Nintendo, visit Miiverse (30 each, 120/week)
Daily - Miitomo stuff (outfits + 3 questions = 10/day, 70/week)
Daily (harder) - Miitomo stuff (listening to people, people liking your posts 25/day, 175/week)

Can't use Miitomo...I'd get Wario Ware Touched ASAP as it expires 1st July while Picross isn't until 1st October.

As for what if future rewards are more expensive? We will see but I feel the expiration will keep costs down but it also makes Club Nintendo style goods they showed unlikely to happen. I'd certainly be unhappy to see 7000 platinum point rewards or 900 gold point rewards for example.

Re: My Nintendo and Its Rewards Are Live

Starwolf_UK

@Mario_Fart The FAQ says you can unlink an NNID at any time provided the My Nintendo account is linked to something else. Hopefully that means you can use both (but not simultaneously of course) and having to remember switch NNID on My Nintendo before buying something to earn the coins might be a bit annoying, still.

Re: My Nintendo and Its Rewards Are Live

Starwolf_UK

So when the gold/platinum rewards say download codes they really are download codes, right?

I'd like the Zelda Picross but have no interest in having an NNID on my 3DS. It makes me wonder why Flipnote Studio 3D is being handled differently. To be honest I'm expecting to make the 1000 points for Picross then be told "can't redeem you don't have 3DS".

The predicted 6 month point expiration window for points is true and I'm sad it affects gold points too. If the gold rewards were better I'd say it discourages regular purchases and binges instead.

I notice I've missed a trick to extend the life of coins. The 6 month countdown is after you collect them, therefore you can delay collecting them. This is similar to what I did with Club Nintendo where I only registered games when the slips were about to expire (and messed up a few times and got them expired...oops).

Re: GAME Grabs UK Exclusivity of Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition

Starwolf_UK

@blondeandy There is an unverified image going around that is said to be the French stock allocation and it lists the day 1 stock as Conquest: 40,000 Birthright: 40,000 Limited edition: 7,000

When you consider that France is likely to be the biggest market for this game and saw similarly quick sell-outs the low stock story seems likely. Sadly, Nintendo's perspective I feel is "how can we use this to make retailers buy more copies of Birthright/Conquest". Some of this might be if you were to buy this all on the eShop you wouldn't get an artbook or steelbook so those items effectively lose Nintendo money. I think Nintendo are losing a lot of good will instead though...

Re: The Nintendo DSi Shop Shuts Down Next Year

Starwolf_UK

One year notification is welcomed. From what I can gather this uses the same server as the Wii Shop Channel so a bit baffled as to why the plug is being pulled now when it should be pulled when you're pulling the plug on that too.

While its capacity and usage is minimal these days I'm not too happy to see it go, especially as there are a few titles that are only found there. It serves as a reminder that archival will continue to fall to unauthorised and unofficial sources.

@BaffleBlend Since the Wii Shop channel and has not been absorbed intro the eShop like it has mostly happened to the DSi Shop it is safe for the Wii U life at least but I do question the long term.

@OorWullie Well...yes, as nearly all of the DSi Shops content is on the 3DS eShop already and there was a reasonable period of times when Mario vs. DK march on the minis was in the top 20 all time best sellers.

Re: GAME Grabs UK Exclusivity of Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition

Starwolf_UK

While it is sold out at least stock seemed to last a bit longer than other places. The price is a real surprise for me as I was totally expecting an £80 RRP. I'm still happy with my £25 conquest pre-order from Amazon.

I hope anyone that orders this doesn't suffer famous payment problems (I'm not talking taking the money 7 times time but payment failed because the PayPal details you used expired because PayPal is not designed around pre-orders or you need to change credit card for some reason and there is no option on the site to do this and support just say "why not re-order it").

@Alundra-1998 You're right about the saving money part but I question the accuracy of how much. The DLC versions of Brithright, Conquest and Revelation route will not be £35 each. I think £20 is likely and well 35+40=75...

@Toaster05 I remember hearing people used to be able to trick the system by adding a non-pre order item to their basket, using the credit then deleting said item from the basket. I've not personally tried this though.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X Earns Modest UK Chart Position But Outsells Predecessor

Starwolf_UK

@sandman89 Based on what? No preload and its price (£50) are enough to scare people away frankly.

@AlternateButtons "most of Europe"? Europe has around 740 million people of which around 70 million live in the UK. Speaking of which shame the German and French charts are not so widely reported. The French charts are always a week behind and the German ones ones out late in the week. Nintendo tend to fare better in both.

@Angelic_Lapras_King I doubt it'll matter now. I feel lack of minecraft was used as an excuse and now it easy to once again move the goalposts as follows: Why would anyone buy Wii U that has a similar cost to a Ps4 or Xbox one because it has a more expensive, download-only version of Minecraft (the retail version is a big part of the console success) which is also on PS4 and Xbox one? Off-TV play is my only thought and even that seems like a niche with tablets now in the mainstream.

Re: Black Friday Sales Bring Little Joy for Nintendo in the UK

Starwolf_UK

Wow Chibi-Robo is out of the top 50 3DS chart (why does 3DS have a larger chart than all formats?). Not even £10 could save that and heck Code name STEAM is barely hanging in there at £5.

As for the chart itself. No surprise the Wii U hardware bundles were poorly priced and have not been getting better with time (these prices are rather static so logically if someone didn't want to pay £200 for the MK8 bundle w/free game offer in 2014 they're not going to be at all interested in paying £220 for a MK8+Splatoon bundle, especially if an Xbox One or PS4 which actually have more of a future are in that ballpark). For being "old" 3DS XL stock the deals on that system were not that great either. Likewise the New 3DS deals were also a disappointment (New 3DS w/Pokemon Alpha Sapphire was £105 a few months ago on Amazon UK, the MH and Xenoblade consoles offered this time I think were around £130, many people did not want Pokemon so were salivating over it returning with something they did want).

@ikki5 There are multiple charts published. All formats lumps all versions together while individual formats does not.

Some people prefer individual formats because all formats is sometimes odd when it comes to combining things. Pokemon X and Y wouldn't be combined due to being different games (despite being near identical) but Fifa 15 and Fifa 15 legacy edition (which is actually Fifa 12 with a roster update) would be combined though. Looking at both gives great insight into how little the lower rungs of the chart actually sell if you can find snippets of info about platform split and that.

Re: The eShop is Opening Up in More European Countries Soon

Starwolf_UK

Unless they let people with existing NNID migrate these (why does NNID lock itself to a single country again?) it is a bit late. The fact it is € as well seems a little pointless as Nintendo has no IP locks and all Europe eShops (and South Africa) just pay NOE anyway sometimes in different currencies.

@belmont You are probably well aware that UK is currently (well past 5 years really) a really bad choice as a €10 game costs £9 (€12.79) outside of NES and SNES games which are at their 2006 Wii prices so a couple of cents cheaper than they would be in €. NOE insist this is fair.

Re: The NES Joins The High Definition Era With This Awesome HDMI Mod

Starwolf_UK

So much for Nintendo fixing their awful VC graphics if these comments of "oh its fine on my TV. you must be the ones wrong or are LIARS" are anything to go by.

Your eyes can get used to the dark screens and if you've not seen how it should look on the same screen it is easy to believe the darkness you are seeing is the same as how it should look when it isn't.

Really Nintendo give themselves an own goal here with things like Mario Maker and NES remix where the graphics look a lot different (NES remix still suffers from lag though). I hope the CRT filter doesn't go away as it is a good start.

Really options are useful here something Nintendo is adding at a glacial pace. It is also useful as sometimes darker can be correct for some GBA games which skewed themselves to brighter colours to compensate for the unlit screens (Tales of Phantasia is a good example where they actually darkened the palette back to normal for the US release but Japanese and EU releases used a very bright palette). DS might be similar.

Re: Nintendo Titles Get Pushed Down But Hold On to Top 40 in UK Charts

Starwolf_UK

@Peach64 A few people had suspicion that thegamecollection were sell Australian (or some other imported) versions of Chibi Robo Zip Lash and hence they won'y count for charts at all.

In terms of such aggressive price dropping I'm reminded of Jam with the Band though I don't think Chibi Robo will reach €1 bin levels as that Rhythm Paradise and Sight Training saw. Poor chibi Robo misdirected constantly and his gravestone will read "not even an amiibo could save me"

Re: English Version of SplatNet Website for Splatoon Goes Live

Starwolf_UK

The odd thing with this translations is I think the either the rank system has changed or is not translated properly as the formula in Japan was winsxrate (% as two decimal points)x10 while here the x10 is missing. Considering one of the my friends has a rank of 5 that suggests 1x0.5x10.

It also says it resets midnight Sunday but that is probably Japan time as I didn't play enough on Monday to get 168 points.

Checking right now I see why its translation was postponed. Poor Splatnet has a 500 server error

Re: Sonic Lost World's Wii U Exclusivity Ends With Budget PC Release

Starwolf_UK

I think bundled is the wrong word to use here as it implies it is forever rather than just a pre-order bonus.

The funny thing is SEGA racing had traces of console exclusive characters in it so this could mean Sonic Link and Yoshi have similar but more likely that will that have to left to modders (Sonic community has a dedicated bunch as the Sonic Unleashed day levels mod for Sonic generations shows)

@Seacliff I think the existence of the Sonic Unleashed day levels mod for Sonic generations has killed that happening (the day levels are the better half of the game and a free mod largely offers them)

Re: The Pokémon Company Sues Fan for Copyright Infringement, Demands $4,000 in Damages

Starwolf_UK

I'd also like to know where this $4000 figure comes from. It specifically says damages and not expensive lawyer fees. Seems pretty self inflicted if it is legal fees. If you choose to nuke a mosquito don't ask for a nukes worth of damages. All this needed was a simple cease and desist letter.

I'd also like to see Nintendo sue the Pokemon Company for damages here since Nintendo are implicated in all this not to mention the number of games that don't support Pokemon amiibo.

@Chaoz I thought the pron was free. Also it is protected under parody and fair use of copyright. Things which using official artwork of Pikachu and Snivy sadly are not.

Re: Video: This Splatoon Glitch Makes Rainmaker Very One-Sided on Hammerhead Bridge

Starwolf_UK

Another map ruined for rianmaker. Kelp Dome already has the ability to get in the lead then head to the raised platform next to your spawn point which the other team will have great difficulty in reaching (as the only, probably unintended, entrance is overlooked by the spawn point).

As for this hammerhead one. It might be possible to position yourself in such a way that the rainmakers shield is impossible to break (thinking as in it gets large enough to push you off the platform but not so larger that is can be shot form elsewhere).

Some people would argue Slatspray is similar in that a winning team can retreat to the upper platform area to stall for time but the Kelp dome is far worse.

Re: Rumour: Sega 3D Classics Such As Golden Axe Could Be On The Agenda

Starwolf_UK

SNES games on Wii VC have a similar sort of list of titles and not all of them saw release. The SNES Wii VC ones had some really interesting third party things in there like Illusion of Gaia, Aladdin and Smash TV.

Such a list for these 3DS games here can be verified with a 'mere' decrypted dump of the game or a RAM dump of your own. It would be curious to see if the list changed over time or is abandoned.

Re: GAME Apologises for Super Mario Maker Pre-Order Issue, Should Repay Extra Charges in the "Next Couple of Days"

Starwolf_UK

I'm still in shock about £3000 amiibo guy that came to light when this story was posted on Monday (they had pending charges done over 200 times for a Ganondorf amiibo).

In my case it is several repeat payments could trigger an automatic lock on my account affecting my ability to use the card at all even more than a lack of balance would.

@GloverMist That is just them matching the Amazon price on the amiibo.

Re: GAME Promises Quick Refunds After Charging Customers for Too Many Super Mario Maker Pre-Orders

Starwolf_UK

@RadioShadow My debit card can overdraw actually (despite the whole point of debit cards being they can't) at a mere £15 per transaction. I discovered this ironically enough due to the Nintendo eShop (it has a daily spend limit but it still makes a pending charge if you try to spend beyond this, as a result I went below 0 on pending charges, since my actual account balance was never below zero I was able to contest the overdraft fees).

Of course had I ordered from GAME (I did not due to them not allowing gift cards to be used on pre-orders) it sounds like it would be harder to contest.

Re: New Style Boutique 2 New Nintendo 3DS Bundle Will Bring More Fashion Sense to Europe

Starwolf_UK

@AnarKitty Yokai Watch is a multi million seller in Japan and a serious competitor to Pokemon. As a result a lot of people are interested in it and it is a big release complete with a TV show coming out the same time. Europe won't get that until 2016 (likely due to said TV show) so something needs to fill the gap.

Would you rather Europe gets nothing at all so you can not be upset about them enjoying something you personally have more interest in?

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th September (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

@tysonfury Near RRP? Physical release RRP is £40 so it is less than RRP. Maybe NOE thought the 100 page physical book was worth £5?

Of course like always you can find the disc version for cheaper by retaliers who choose to make less profit.

@Piersen Atlus? NISA handle Etrian games (and a few others) in Europe for some reason. NISA never put anything on sale so are worse than Atlus themselves when it comes to publishing. I'd rather digital only and regular discounts than physical months later with no discounts (and the occasional horrendously expensive limited edition). Ghostlight did put Devil Survivor 1 on sale once (don't know if they're publishing 2 here).

Re: Some Western Splatoon Players Would Prefer Not To Compete With Japan

Starwolf_UK

Really obvious thing missed in the call for regional matchmaking. It doesn't help Europe because the whole of Russia, South Africa and Australia are bundled into Europe. Now the former two are very minor but from my experience of MK8 (which tells you countries) were about 10% Australian.

@jariw That patch makes the game unplayable if you are on a connection with less than 0.6MBs upstream...which is like most ADSL connections in the UK. I have friends who can't play the game now because of that (they can't upgrade their connection either as nobody is laying fiber or cable down in rural England) and I myself had the game unplayable for a few weeks (NOE are still useless here and their support has yet to figure out the connection speed cause). It also ruins the chances of the team whose lost a player winning.

More on that point, the nature of upstream tending to choke downstream can also amplify lag issues. Plus many people have to share connections which also doesn't help.

tl;dr the games netcode is very bandwidth intensive because it isn't a problem in Japan. This can lead to increases in latency related issues and also limits who can make it playable. Finally, the fact the V1 netcode was used in the recent testfire could almost be viewed as false advertising (if someone with an ADSL connection was on the fence about the game found that worked well then decided to buy the game to be treated with "the connection is unstable" all the time).

Re: Shovel Knight amiibo Confirms "Evolving" Relationship With Indies, Says Nintendo

Starwolf_UK

The gold base confuses me because the one NoE are showing has a purple base:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CNes9fdWEAAURH0.jpg

Anyway. I don't like stuff being locked behind these figures especially when no cheaper alternative is offered like I don't know, a card?

As for the it is nice figure argument, you have to understand amiibo are only good if you want the figure. If you don't care about the figure they are just expensive DLC. That cuts me off from a lot of the amiibo content. I personally don't like the Splatoon figures (can't stand the colours used, though when it comes to poses etc they are a lot better than most of the SSB range) but would have loved to have played the challenges by say buying a few cards for a couple of € each (heck I might even be crazy enough to go up to €5 each) but since the option isn't there (maybe Nintendo are scared the figures won't sell?) Nintendo get no money and they get customers disappointed instead. Which is just a lose lose situation.

Re: iOS and Android Receive Pokémon Shuffle Mobile in Japan

Starwolf_UK

In the beta version of this you saw things like some stages costing more hearts to retry.

The thing is the stamina system in this game offers no level of progression via increasing max stamina. While it is nice that all stages cost the same (in the 3DS version at least) being able to earn a higher stamina cap is a must for these sorts of games as you can time manage better by not having to sign in all the time to use your stamina.

Re: Nintendo Download: 27th August (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

Devil's Third is €60? I guess NOE see there is such a small market for this game that they might as well price it at the max as they won't sell more copies at a lower price. Then it has microtransactions on top of that. Oh man...

I guess some people would argue, you can buy eggs to skip the grind of earning eggs so having no buy option is worse here but it really rubs me the wrong way given you're paying €60 just to enter.
