Re: Nintendo Download: 12th June (North America)

Starwolf_UK

The thing about RE Revelaitons is how large the eShop download is. Is it such a great saving if you have to empty the fridge or buy a new SD card?

In case anyone wanted to throw the yellow card of "no fair why no Europe IE sale", we got the sale (this can be the problem with Monday PR is some sales are not planned so far in advance).

Re: Nintendo Download: 12th June (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

Update this news post please (or mention next week) Inazuma Eleven also has a discount in Europe:
http://www.nintendo.de/News/2014/Juni/Die-Downloads-der-Woche-893891.html
It is out on every eShop but the UK one because Level 5 think British Dubs for British people...

Or is this going to be a repeat of Pullbox where the sale was a seperate news post and it never got mentioned in either of the Nintendo Download news posts?

Re: E3 2014: PDP Shows Off its New GameCube-Styled Wired Fight Pad For Wii U and Wii

Starwolf_UK

@yuwarite As far as tournaments go EVO ban all wireless controllers. Latency and potential radio interferance are problems (see: Miyamoto demonstrating Zelda Skyward Sword). Also if you've been playing with one controller for a decade you are more used to it.

For home users though, Pro controller is fine (personally, I'll probably get adaptor and dig out my Gamecube controllers).

@SCAR392 They are plugged into Wii remotes which makes the likelihood of them being registered as pro controllers a bit low. I find it weird how Giotek can offer a pro controller that works both as CC Pro and Wii U pro controller (a switch on the back changes between these) and is fully wireless for about the same as these wired ones but hey uncanny official gamecune controller mold and Nintendo branding cost $$s.

Re: Shin Megami Tensei IV Confirmed For Q3 eShop Release In Europe

Starwolf_UK

I really wonder what Nintendo France are smoking sometimes. I'm guessing all their talk about working hard translating the game was about translating the operations guide.

As for the game release. I am pleased I can start to put this sorry saga behind me (I stopped caring about the game long ago, it was painful so easier to stop caring). I will say one thing though. It is an utter insult to wait over a year from announcement with no info from either the announcer (Nintendo) or the developer (Atlus) about where it is only to half release it in the end. At the very least it is polite to inform people about why it took so long (it shouldn't have PEGI rating+changing one byte of the ROM header is not a year long task).

If it is £31.99/€40 ala Conception 2 I'll wait for the half price sale. I think Atlus USA will have no problem with waiting a year for my purchase (and if they do then they are hypocrites). That is assuming they remember to give Europe sales on eShop games (like they seem to do every month in America) otherwise they can wait forever.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Stays Second in UK as Tomodachi Life Has Modest Début

Starwolf_UK

When the entire top 10 is down like 20%+ on last week (Watch dogs is down by 81%) and is relatively unchanged it makes you realise the rest of chart must be sub 10k and practically dead.

Anyway Tomodachi life. I guess next week is about number 30 and the week after off the charts, business as usual for first party 3DS game. There is always hope for a second wind and out of the charts/=/0.

@faint Just UK. It will be interesting to see if later in the week Japan suffers from a drop in MK sales and if it is a similar amount (as that is the only country with good charts for this purpose).

Re: 130 Jobs To Go In Nintendo Of Europe Reshuffle

Starwolf_UK

Their other office in Frankfurt is pretty near (40km), in case any one compares this to when NOA marketing was moved to New York (from Redmond) and lost a lot of talent who didn't want to move halfway across the country (but could they gain new talent from that).

But given this is where the warehouses were, are they getting new ones in Frankfurt? They still need to store goods.

Re: Nintendo Spain Secures Win Over R4 Card Retailer

Starwolf_UK

Quite a contrast to Italy where pre-loading Wiis with homebrew to add functionality not present in the system was considered fine (I think it went to a European court) as there was no mention or ability to play pirated software with those provided services.

Then again that ability to run pirated software is the main difference with the R4 cart (and thus this case). If it was something like Games N' Music (the DS flashcart I own) that would be a different matter (it can't run commercial games, heck some homebrew struggles too).

@gurtifus The fact you need an almost 2 year old firmware to use it is a pretty good deterrent. Also the thing is its own worst enemy with the high cost of it.

Re: Nintendo Revenue Claims on Mario Kart 8 YouTube Footage Reportedly Underway

Starwolf_UK

Don't care if already said. It is the background music that causes the claim. MKTV lets you turn that off. You can also remove the music too via the content ID matches.

Thing about the BGM. Nintendo could not be more lazy with how they do it. The names of the music look like they just took the files in the games music directory, converted them to WAV (or whatever googles requirements are) and just sent them over to google.

Sad thing is that will probably make more money than actually releasing the OSTs would (releasing the OSTs is more effort too, you actually need to name the music tracks).

Re: Natsume Announces Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley for a 2014 Release on 3DS

Starwolf_UK

I'm not sure what the better analogy is this situation: Wonder Boy (which Hudson released as Adventure Island and made their own sequels) or Robotech (an 80s anime localisation that glued 3 unrelated shows together to fit with US syndication needs of 5*13 episodes and so had plot edits, the original shows would not use the Robotech branding if they got localised).

Still I wonder if the market can handle this many games and what the consequences could be. Worst case scenario is Natsume put out something terrible and nobody buys Story of Seasons killing the franchise in the west.

Re: Brain Training / Brain Age Makes DS Début on Wii U Virtual Console in Japan

Starwolf_UK

Good to hear the screen can be flipped. I though I'd have to hold the Gamepad upside down (raises left hand).

As for a DS VC. I'd love to see more experimentation with tiered pricing. If yoshi touch and go is the same cost as say, Mario Kart DS that is daft.

@sillygostly I want to kid myself that I'm Brain age 20. It only took 50 reloads of savestates, suspending to look at the miiverse screenshot I took of the word list and cherry picking the other games via the hidden selector.

As for Devilish Brain Training. Given the NOE stars list has a game called Brain Training 3D that came out on October 25th 2013 I'm guessing that was when it was supposed to come out. I'd love to knew what is going on.

Re: The Legend of Zelda LEGO Set Misses Out On Official Approval

Starwolf_UK

@C-Olimar Number of pieces (438 for something fairly small) was my exact thought too.

Does anyone know if the failed creators ever release their plans so fans can buy the pieces themselves (and then find LEGO don't sell certain parts separately so have to exchange with fans for considerably more if certain pieces are only found in obscure sets).

Re: Mario Kart 8 Drives Wii U Sales In The UK, Claims Second Place Behind Watch Dogs

Starwolf_UK

@Technosphile The sales for each week are not static by any means. A few weeks ago number 1 was 10k sales so you can't say 2nd place is 30k. Its turns out actually, from the Watch Dogs platform splits, its total (estimated from the LA Noire comparison in the PR) and using the individual formats charts MK8 sold anywhere between 50k and 104k. Maybe using the 2nd biggest MK launch info gives a better constraint on that.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Drives Wii U Sales In The UK, Claims Second Place Behind Watch Dogs

Starwolf_UK

I'm worried the hardware sales are fueled by the good pre-order bundles on the MK8 system (£200 for instance) and now that those deals have gone and Wii U hardware seems to have gone up by about £30 across the board (as people now want Wii U systems so you don't have to try and sell them as hard) that the sales boost will be short lived.

But looking at the big picture. Its crazy to think that about 2 weeks ago you could top the charts with like 10,000 copies sold of something.

Re: Nintendo Download: 5th June (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

I have a strange feeling the £ and € are the wrong way round for Tekken tag. Anyone like to check? In any case the download size is an absolute killer...

Disappointed the press release did not remind people about the pullblox/fallblox sale (as the sale was announced after last weeks one so for people who only check the weekly news would miss it).

Re: Treasure Your 3DS Game Saves Forever With This Handy Accessory

Starwolf_UK

Now heres the thing. I thought for games like Pokemon the saves were encrypted specific to cartridges. That is to say if you back up your save and your cart breaks you might as well have not backed up.

But the handy thing with these backups is to clone Pokemon by combining with Pokemon bank (backup save, deposit Pokemon to bank, restore save).

As for cheating. The Powersaves by Datel has existed for months now (to stop clones it has DRM where you can only insert codes they make though their software, they also got issued C&D for some Pokemon codes covering unreleased events). If I was a serious Pokemon player I would consider using this with the Pokemon bank trick I mentioned above. If your cart does go kaput you can restore the Pokemon from bank and then get items back from the powersaves.

@Angelic_Lapras_King The Retrode has a Game boy adapter so that would work.

Re: Nintendo Announces The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U

Starwolf_UK

I'm guessing 2USB ports is required to power the rumble, wonder if it will work without rumble if you leave one unplugged. Which reminds me of a little known N64 fact. You can modify rumble paks to work without needing a AAA battery. The reason this is not officially supported is trying to use 4 controllers like that causes problems (the N64 controller ports end up drawing too much power).

Re: Miiverse Tells the Tale of a Broken Mario Kart 8 Street Date

Starwolf_UK

@Einherjar Wait, so Club Nintendo were happy to warn people about missing NES Castlevania while offering no warning about missing the free game with Mario Kart 8. I've found at least 4 people who have registered MK8 early. There was no warning for them and they are all gutted that they may have missed the promotion. I've told them to not let Nintendo get away with it.

@Crimson_Ridley I've heard quite a few peoples Amazon orders are still preparing for dispatch. Amazon are really hit and miss these days. It would be fine if orders didn't sometimes take days to prepare for no reason. I can imagine it being more annoying if you have Amazon prime.

Re: Weirdness: When PR Stunts Go Wrong - Watch Dogs

Starwolf_UK

So I'm guessing if the voice mail part worked like it was supposed to there would be less trouble. Is it a smart press package because it got in the news though?

I'm remind of the blunder EA had in 2008 where they sent Brass Knuckles with the Godfather II and upon finding these were prohibited weapons in a number of states had to recall them.

Reading the source and hearing of those live animal PR stunts though.

Re: Pullblox World Puzzling Its Way to Europe on 19th June, Includes Cross-Platform Support

Starwolf_UK

I appreciate the crossbuy move even though I can not take advantage of it (I can't lock my 3DS to a single eShop that NNID forces as I'll lose purchases not available in the UK eShop...sure they're in the account history but trying to redownload fails, who knows maybe one day 3DS systems will be able to use multiple NNID like on Wii U) and am interested in where it leads.

I'll still get the 3DS games and think about the Wii U one. It is a shame the sales news came too late to be mentioned in the PR but I'm sure they'll remind people each week.

Re: Kirby: Triple Deluxe Drops Outside UK Top 20 But Survives Another Week

Starwolf_UK

I think this has less to do with Kirby having long legs (the character literally has no legs as the feet are connected to the body ) and more the charts being in a bit of a lull which are saving Kirby from falling off. But man, Wolfenstein is quite dominant (25% of all game sales last week).

MK8 will be an interesting acid test. Some will go for the pricer eShop release and skip being counted for these charts. The worrying thing is how many stores won't be stocking the hardware bundle and these stores have no Wii U hardware to speak of either.

@Artwark They do well in France (Kirby debuted no. 1 there) and decently in Germany. The UK remains the week market it traditionally has been.

@ULTRA-64 The update discs and POS stuff for the demo units was sent out to stores on Friday so they should be setting those up (I got to see the update happen in a Toys R' Us store...thing takes ages, as in about 30 minutes and photos and a report have to sent back). But they're missing a trick. The free game promo is not said anywhere, neither pre-order boxes nor the POS. That should be shouted from the rooftops. Then there is the fact fairly few stores have demo units to begin with.

As for TV adverts, There will be at least 5 next Monday-Friday on E4 at about 20:10 using user submitted MKTV footage. I just hope those mention the free game...they were saying a while back marketing would be year long.

Re: Nintendo Download: 29th May (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

A thing to note about the Warner games is everyone I know who has purchased them physically did not get Club Nintendo points despite NOE listing as eligible games (http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Club-Nintendo/About-Club-Nintendo/How-to-get-Stars/How-to-get-Stars-622685.html). I am guessing in those cases only the eShop versions are eligible.

Mario Kart 8 is a definite buy for me (I bought the Wii U for it) but not at UK eShop prices.

@outburst That is true but adding in the NNP points (~£4.16) makes it about 25p more than £8. Going by what I said above, Arkham City has no Club Nintendo points and I think physical will go cheaper.

@Emblem Look at the NNP website. £50 is not enough points to get the £5 code sadly (as £50 is 120% of the cost due to VAT added). I think €60 is enough to get €5 though.

Re: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call's Third DLC Set Announced

Starwolf_UK

@Koapa Well I was contemplating buying DLC for the first game but since it is all included in Curtain Call I'll buy that instead. Yeah the price per song sounds like a lot but in terms of how long they take to master they offer good longevity if that is your sort of thing (assuming the notes are as well placed as they were in the main game).

Re: Kirby Seizes Top Ten Single-Format Chart Début in the UK

Starwolf_UK

Remember the touch generations and wii sports audience graduated to smartphones and/or left gaming alltogether. Didn't help Nintendo threw Wii and DS under the bridge.

These people won't buy a 3DS for Brain Training as either the fad has passed or the can get a similar app so no need for 3DS (it also not being out in Europe doesn't help)

Re: Kirby Seizes Top Ten Single-Format Chart Début in the UK

Starwolf_UK

Given that some of these online services make it very hard to remove your card details and the systems might be used by kids (meaning spending spree) I can see why a physical copy of minecraft has appeal as it avoids that completely.

As for thoughts on Mario Kart 8. Will people buying several copies to use with several club nintendo accounts (then find CeX will give them £12 for the game leaving them out of pocket) bump up the sales or are such people the minority?

Re: Mario Kart 8 Free Wii U Game Promotion Extended to Scandinavian Countries

Starwolf_UK

From what I understood it is only a half victory since the codes will be distributed in late-August. i.e. NOE are going to get all the codes in a single batch and generate the codes then which means waiting until the closing date of July.

@jariw From what I understand Nintendo made the call to Shut down Club Nintendo. NOE is unwilling to fund any sort of rewards scheme outside of countries it runs in including giving money or inventory to those distributors. Technically Bergsala is actually older than (their first dealings with Nintendo were importing Game & Watches directly from the Japanese side of the company) NOE too.

Re: Here's a Handy Guide to Pokémon Services That'll Stop With Nintendo's Wi-Fi Shutdown

Starwolf_UK

Perhaps the sad Pikachu can be replaced with that melodramatic Krystal in tears running away image form Starfox command.

I guess the Jam with the Band downloads are a feature that will be missed (but that has a potentially limited shelf life anyway due to licenses). Also Wario Ware DIY since that literally is half the game.

@warvad Private servers are fully working? I thought it was only Mario kart and needed you to patch the game.

Re: Pokémon Black and White 2 Soundtrack Album Completes Set on iTunes

Starwolf_UK

I'd personally like for non-iTunes (its not the only digital music store in the world) but baby steps.

Black/White/2 had too many tracks with minor changes. Different seasons, legendary themes (few noticed these so they seemed to get dropped for XY). I'd have liked the duo to be one set though (or maybe the BW2 to only have the new stuff).

Still but its better than SEGA releasing multi-CD sets at a single disc at a time.

Re: New 3DS System Update 7-2-0-17 Now Live

Starwolf_UK

The list of Nintendo Zones was also updated (why this info isn't in the official log...). By that I mean the rather a small list of SSIDs the 3DS will connect to whenever it sees and allow usage of the Nintendo zone viewer on (plus do spotpass/streetpass on). No idea what changed though. Hopefully the google ones replacing starbucks in America have been added.

@nostalgianinja If it is e-mail only though you have the potential to receive a pre-owned system with no way to disable parental controls (or better still a child locks the parent out of the parental controls). LIkewise unofficial demo units (official ones have autoboot carts which bypass system menu) can be trolled in a similar way.

Re: Mario Golf: World Tour Hits a Bogey in UK Charts

Starwolf_UK

Thing is estimating the numbers last week Mario Golf sold over 3000 (nothing is selling a great deal you could hit number 1 with 15000 sales, this week it looks like 11000) while this week is definitely more than 1000.

I just wonder if we will see months as bad as June and July last year (sales were so low in those months GTAV outsold everything sold in those months in its first week).

Yeah the estimates are not 100% accurate but they are far from the drivel of say VGchartz. The estimates are done by using the Famitsu published monthly totals those can be used as a beacon (say game A was out for 2 weeks in a month and the second week was -50%, the monthly total is 150% of the week 1 total), it was better when the Guardian published platform splits (the individual formats give you some finer constraints), also UKIE occasionally leak things, this week we see LEGO move sold 6,493 units.

Re: Nintendo Download: 15th May (Europe)

Starwolf_UK

No price for conception 2? Other sources say €39.99/£31.99 (an unusual split). Makes me wonder if that was added into the press release (or redacted from it). Fit music is also lacking a description.

@rjejr Me neither. Apparently the download size is 11 gigabytes though which makes me wonder what exactly it contains.

Re: Ultra Rare Ocarina of Time Prototype Reportedly Surfaces on eBay, Costs £100,000

Starwolf_UK

@ungibbed Reverse engineering of the emulator/ROM packages disproves these. The 2003 emulator does not use the RAM pak (loading roms that need it fail, curiously there is a working list of first party games, makes me wonder if the N64 player NOE once mentioned in survey was going to be emulation rather than hardware). Texture changes are done via external files that substitute the originals.

But, I think the debug ROMs were made to specifically test the emulators (its easier to jump to problem areas) so having an original running on hardware means you compare side-by-side and get them both to the same scene with ease (but if this approach was taken it makes you wonder why it went so wrong in places, especially lighting in the VC release of MM).

Re: Download Sales On Nintendo Formats Have Trebled In The Last Two Years

Starwolf_UK

Generated means income, right. They are not counting hardware bundles and promotions, right?

While the 3DS and Wii U audience is smaller than the Wii audience and some of the offerings are more expensive like they've said before this audience is a lot more aware of the online capabilities.

Digital games. Yeah I own Mario & Luigi Dream Team thanks to the Nintendo UK store glitch. Otherwise I'm in for it when it is the cheapest option and I need the game at that moment (I'm a savvy purchaser with a fair bit of patience...even if I do complain at every single delay NOE put out). The former requires some trickery to do though

Re: Pokémon Omega Ruby & Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Confirmed For Worldwide 3DS Launch in November

Starwolf_UK

Fresh take? Well something has to replace the Game Corner and Contests. Oh and I guess HM bloat. I assume they'll take the gen 5 and 6 idea of few HMs required overall (DPP were so bad in this respect which probably contributed to this) but if you do use HMs there are TMs and cool stuff to find.

Gen 3 had some neat ideas even if direction wise it felt a bit random at times.

Personally I probably won't bother with the game (one system so no way to trade and Pokemon bank requires NNID to download, can't get NNID as doing so means I lose download rights for eShop games not available outside of UK...plus Pokemon bank can't trade items) and will get annihilated on battle spot thanks to the overpowered move tutors it adds (classic rule of competitive anything, add stuff that becomes metagame required in the next release it generates more sales). Ah well a fun ride while it lasted.

@Dark-Link73 Pokemon has been at the very least semi-annualised from the start. I've seen timelines posted which I can't recall. I think to make them annualized you have to count oddly (specific regions that sort of thing).

Re: 2DS CPU Update Looks Set to Adjust System Security

Starwolf_UK

@AVahne If this is hack related there are only 40 million susceptible systems out there.

But it being CPU related suggests it is far out of reach of all but the most dedicated. I wonder if it is a precaution or something was actually figured out.

@TheWhiteFalcon I find it funny how people want a 3DS model with a second stick. Surly buying a circle pad pro is cheaper. It won't change the fact so little software supports it. Outside of Capcom (who probably pushed for the thing to be made because Monster Hunter) I can only think of 2 games with support it, Kid Icarus (to offer a slightly better left handed mode) and Galaxy Force 2. I'm sure there are a few more but generally these are less fragment user base and more not used.

Re: North American Club Nintendo Update Closes Down Physical Rewards Until May

Starwolf_UK

I wonder if they're just moving stock somewhere or are taking an audit as site maintenance should also take down the digital rewards.

I also wonder if the bigger digital line up will mean no update at the start of the month.

@bouncer0304 Reminds me that the last time the Nintendo Europe went under maintenance (or at least the club nintendo side) they removed surveys for DSiWare and WiiWare (they said they would come back so I did not do mine, 2 years on and I'm still waiting, good thing I don't need the stars) to bring in eShop surveys. I find it odd the points did not vanish then.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Must Take Careful Steps Into Paid DLC and Free-to-Play

Starwolf_UK

I was under the impression Nintendo was keen to offer a mix of free and paid DLC. I'm not really seeing a lot of the former. Fire Emblem is the only example of a lot of free (but technically that is unlock keys).

The season pass term was silly of Nintendo as season passes usually cost more and you have no clue what you are getting. These seem to be used as a method of extending the life of the game.
