When Nintendo first revealed that we could play as characters from Zelda, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Splatoon and many more in Super Mario Maker using amiibo, we were thrilled to bits. Little did we know just how expansive this roster would become, which finally comes in at a staggering 100 unique costumes. Of course not every single costume is amiibo-based but that simply means more characters to play as, so that's fine in our books.
In this video we look at every single costume that this phenomenal game has to offer, so if you've not already noticed the various spoiler warnings and you want to keep things a surprise, we suggest you turn back now before it's too late.

Cheers for including the up/down animations in this one. The Zelda/Sheik ones were pretty clever.
Also worth pointing out — I saw in a Gamexplain livestream that the Splatoon Inklings turn into their squid forms while swimming. Little touches like that are nice.
Edit: Well that's embarrassing, I must've missed hearing that shoutout at the start of the video. Originally I asked whether or not you guys made this level as I saw it in another video.
Did ya know? When Silver Mario gets a super star, it'll play the Metal Mario theme from Super Mario 64!
I don't want to watch the video, because spoilers, but are all currently released/announced amiibo compatible?
@CB85 Every single current amiibo is compatible.
Even future amiibo with minor variations of the same character are covered, including Gold Mario, Silver Mario, Yarn Yoshi Green, Blue and Pink, and Mega Yarn Yoshi.
@CB85 So far everything announced is compatible, yes. But certain Smash Bros DLC characters have not been included... yet.
@Mario_maniac @RupeeClock Nice! Thanks!
Kart Mario also gets a special Super Star theme, the one used in Super Mario Kart.
@RupeeClock Thanks, I can finally unbox my silver Mario now.
@rjejr I definitely want to build a Metal Mario themed stage now, based around Metal Mario's short lived invulnerability.
With all of the recent Shovel Knight news, I would be dissapointed if his character skin doesn't eventually make it in this game.
They are nice, but somehow not having the large sprites like Zelda II's Link, Samus, Kid Icarus, etc. seems strange.
@CB85 : The only incompatible amiibo that I know of are the Mii fighters, and I'm guessing that the Animal Crossing cards won't be either (except for any characters that will also be released as figurines).
Won't spoil much here, but I'm thrilled that Ashley is included. =D
I'm disappointed that Jimmy T never gets any love though (outside of the WarioWare games at least =P).
That's great that there's so many costumes for Mario, coming with their own poses and sound effects. But, how does 8-bit Sonic look so close to his 16-bit form, yet Megaman looks like......whatever that thing was?
@rjejr you don't have to, you can unlock it without the Amiibo, unless you want it the second you unbox the game.
You have no idea how happy Waluigi being in here made me.
I died when I saw Ashley show up, lol.
Hocus Pocus!
@NintendoFan64 You and me both! Been a Waluigi fan ever since he replaced DK in Mario Party.
I am also glad to see Chibi-Robo! Ashley was a surprise. Why not Dr Crygor, though?
But you can't transform into STANLEY?!?!?
real bummer.
Yay, chicken Arwing!
The only amiibo characters I didn't see were Ryu and Shovel Knight. Ryu is probably due to Capcom though.
Is there an English version of Shulk or is it only Japanese? (the voice I mean)
@rayquaza_master Pretty sure it's Japanese only. It's odd that they used the western ROB — I think he remained grey even in Japan rather than have his Famicom colours — yet they used Shulk's Japanese VA.
@Trikeboy ryu is smash dlc... shovel knight is well erm 3rd party as well...
we knew about mewtwo for ages not the roy or the other one that came out that day but idk if there in there. ik mewtwo is but yeah.
amazed theres 2 isabelles why?
I'll be having a hayday tomorrow with this game and my splat 3 pack. gonna make a level for each a simple stupid level for each...
Very cool! Maybe a bit to much animal crossing, but still lots of cool stuff in there.
Aaaw letterbox Nicky. I'll be playing as Toad hehe. Hurry up yodel...bring my game. I've been tracking you all night haha
Wow, this is AMAZINGLY! It feels great owning all these amiibo. I'll be scanning them in for use tomorrow morning. And I'm sure I'll have the remaining ones unlocked soon enough, the ones that haven't been released yet
@Soren i think Sonic is actually the only 16-bit style character.
When I saw some of those enemy sprites, all I can think about is a full new game where you control a group of "enemies" say a Goomba, Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa and Lakitu, and must use each of their special abilities to navigate stages. Make it happen Nintendo!
The wii board was kinda--meh
I really like DK and DK Jr. Mega Man, I was hoping would have looked like he would on NES but it's a nice touch anyway. I wish there was a store you could buy these within the game like you would in Mario vs Donkey Kong, but at least they're letting us unlock these characters instead of forcing us to buy amiibos. Pack Man was lookin pretty sweet
Hmm no Mega Mario in that video. Wonder if that one really is amiibo exclusive?
Big Brain Academy! That was unexpected!
My wife and sons hit up Target before school this morning. They picked up Super Mario Maker, the Mario Rubix cube, the $5 Target gift card, and a Dr. Mario Amiibo. My oldest son was looking for the retro Mario Amiibo but our Target only go 2 total, and the two people who got them, were waiting since 2am! I also wanted a Ganondorf Amiibo but they were sadly gone. They did have Olimar and Zero Suit but I'm not interested in those at the moment. I may regret not picking up Olimar.
@MadAdam81 Yeah, I know, I think it was very cool of Nitnedo to let us DL levels w/ skins, but I really have been waiting a long time for an excuse to unbox my silver Mario, so this is it. Who knows when I'll get another chance?
@RupeeClock Since this game was announced I've only wanted to build 1 level - giant Mario, fire flower, star invulnerability, destroying everything in his path, then fighting a giant Bowser at the end, so I can call it Godzilla vs Gamera. Now I can make a 2nd one called Mecha-Godzilla vs Gamera.
Though I don't think I can combine giant, fire and invulnerability into 1 Mario, but that's the level I wanted to make, wanton destruction w/o fear of dieing, I really don't like dieing.
@dkxcalibur You can get Olimar and Gandorf this afternoon (or evening, depending on where you live) on Amazon. Paulentena lasted for about 15 minutes - I actually ordered it and then canceled b/c I realized I didn't want it - so you have a shot if you know when to shop.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/09/more_wave_5_amiibo_pre-order_sale_windows_confirmed_for_amazon_in_north_america
Ganondorf - 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern
Zero Suit Samus - 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern
Olimar & Pikmin - 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern
Mario Classic Colour amiibo - 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern
I was going to go to Target this morning after dropping my kid off at band practice at 8AM - it's how I bought Spaltoon - but band doesn't start until next week. Forgot about the $5 Rubiks cube, maybe I should have gone for that. Amazon will be delivering the game - SMM - this afternoon.
@rjejr Unfortunately yeah, Giant Mario can't be combined with other power ups like Fire Mario, Propeller Mario, etc.
Can still grab a Super Star though.
@RupeeClock Lots and lots of trial and error on this one. And I am SO GLAD I don't have to wait 9 days to try it all. I'm still in disbelief they changed it.
@rjejr For the best, there's no good reason that players should also have to wait 9 days to play levels designed by others.
Wow! There sure is a lot of costumes! I'll be sure to use my Amiibo in the levels I create! Sonic, Luigi, Marth, and Ashley are my favorites from the video.
@NintendoFan64 Waluigi has always been one of my favourite Mario universe characters but he does remind me a bit of Robbie Rotten from lazy town so that’s when I end up screaming "YOU JUST GOT ROBBED BY ROBBIE ROTTEN!" at people when I hit them in MK Wii so sad he didnt make it into MK7
@rjejr People like you make me not so worried to grow up knowing that even having kids anyone can still be a gamer
@RaviosDirtyHat Oh, I could give you a million reasons to worry about growing up, 2 million if you want to own your own home, but kids, gaming, and gaming w/ kids aren't on the list. The only problem I have w/ gaming at my age is being too tired for all nighters, used to go all night, now I'm done by midnight. Gaming is still w/o a doubt my #1 leisure activity. Has been for the past 18 years. Never too old for video games, just for 3DS screens.
@Tsuchinoko He sure looks like it, huh?
Anyone know exactly how these Mystery Mushrooms work in the game?
Do you just place them in a level and then see what happens?
Is there a limit to how many are available or can be placed?
Damn, I clicked through the video (with the arrow keys), just hoping Ryu would also be featured (since there will be an Amiibo of him someday). Of course he isn't (not that I'm surprised).
My favourite is Kart Mario after I saw a level with him yesterday.
But Metal Mario is also nice, my favourite character in MK.
No Takamaru? What gives?
There's something unsettling about seeing Sonic in the 1-1 environment. Who would ever have expected to see that in an official Nintendo game?
Sonic's is the best. Not gonna lie. Most of these look horrible. They definitely should have used Zelda 2 Link, real Samus, Ninten, real Mega Man, Justin Bailey Zero Suit Samus, Mario 2 Peach and Toad, Wario Land style Wario, gosh the list goes on. I made a level called 3rd Party Dash! tonight, but thats probably the last time I use Pac Man and Mega Man. I mainly like Silver Mario and Retro Mario. Think I'll stick with those. Now I regret passing up Gold Mario... Had a golden opportunity too. Lol.
Sonic is actually the 8-bit Sonic from the Game Gear versions. Loved the video and the comments here so far! I didn't recognize R.O.B. so I have to re-watch. Don't know who Ashley is? Mega Man is indeed close enough to the true sprite but wanted to see the true NES sprites of other characters like they did with Kirby, Pac-Man and Link.
no lucas?
Anyone know the character at the 2:44 mark?
@FourteenCoast He's at the 4:22 mark.
@Magrane Ashley is a 15 year old witch who live in a haunted house in Diamond City. She's from the Warioware games.
@Nico07 oh thanks
@FabioSMASH Mystery mushrooms will unlock random characters when used. Alternately I found that when creating a level you can place a mushroom in the stage and then tapping it will prompt you which of all of your unlocked costumes you would like it to unlock. The mystery mushroom would randomly unlock any costume. Per this video each costume was placed without a problem, but if an mystery mushroom limit was in place the icon would become greyed out when you reach the limit.
