It's still early days for Miitomo; the first app from Nintendo and DeNA has a long way to go before it will have firmly established itself. Nevertheless it enjoyed a positive launch in Japan and has since attracted plenty of attention in the West.
Since its 31st March release in territories such as the US, UK and Germany, the app has shown strong momentum. Though it's performing well on both iOS and Android it's on the Apple platforms where it's done best. Five days since launch (at the time of writing) it's still the number one free app on iPhone in countries such as the US and UK, and is top five in Germany.
Also notable is that, according to App Annie, the app has even grossed a reasonable amount in its early days in the US. At the time of writing Miitomo is among the leading 100 top grossing (87th at present) apps in the US; considering it's free-to-start with rather limited and modest monetisation that seems reasonable. Evidently a number of users are paying real money for in-game coins.
Similar Web has also been weighing in on early statistics, showing that on average Miitomo is demonstrating impressive levels of engagement per user. Taking statistics from the more established Japanese release, it states that many are keeping the app and using it regularly (it's too soon to pay much attention to Western figures in these areas).
Japanese app users have taken to the app almost immediately, and as of April 2nd, 3% of all Japanese Android devices had Miitomo installed on them. Since its release, these users have been spending an average of over 22 minutes a day on the app, and have made it the 13th most popular social app in Japan. Furthermore, our recent Uninstalls Report showed that many apps lose their users within the first 3 to 7 days, which does not seem to be the case with Miitomo, as the app is showing an above average retention rate early on.
Overall Nintendo and DeNA's first app seems to have enjoyed a solid start. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses, and also what the companies being to smart devices next.

Only issue I have is if no friends download it then very limited
I've kinda stopped using it already. But I don't know anyone who uses it, apart from one other and he doesn't like it.
Still, kinda surprised people are actually paying real money for in game coins. It's not like it's hard to get these coins.
"3% of all Japanese Android devices had Miitomo installed on them"
That doesn't sound like a lot to be honest.
I'm about ready to remove the app from my phone. Seems pretty pointless when none of your friends have it.
Enjoying it far more than I expected to though it does seem to have run out of questions to ask me. Hopefully they'll add more soon. It definitely has potential for added features too.
Managed to get LoZ Picross a few days after My Nintendo's launch, all thanks to Miitomo! I would love an easier way to add friends, though.
It's pretty fun.
@Ibberson Having Facebook with no friends must be terrible.
I should stop playing around and download this
It is quite addictive, I'll give them that. But it seems like most of my addiction came just from trying to Friend people via Twitter and Face-to-Face. Once I got everybody connected I find it easier to just communicate with them on twitter rather than use Miitomo. Though for the Japanese who probably burned out on Twitter and FB years ago this is probably a nice new way to do things.
I'll also say the timing w/ Miitomo and MyN means they really were just trying to gett hings up and running. If everytign is working well maybe they'll increase stuff to do in Miitomo now. If not, people will be bored with the limited content soon I think.
It seems quite buggy on my Xperia Android phone, throwing up errors quite often, mostly server stuff, I think. I quite like it, but I find answering questions on a phone quite irritating. I prefer a physical keyboard to the touchscreen one, but it's not working on my tablet.
I like the way questions jump from the trivial to the profound. There's some fun to be had thinking of how to reply. They'll need to refresh the rewards fairly often to get me to keep using it daily though and they really should find a way to allow children under 13 to make use of it.
I will say, without friends, it's complete crap (like any social media or purely multiplayer game). It's made to be played along with friends, the inclusion of syncing your social media is an amazing idea meaning you can add friends you can't always meet.
I'm having fun with it, kind of addictive actually!
I downloaded it but it didn't work. I open it, get a black screen for a few seconds, then get returned to my home screen. I tried re-installing, off and on, nothing works. The phone's a Samsung Note 2. Anyone know what I can do?
I check in daily and change shirts, but without anyone else on the app it quickly becomes fairly useless. I thought about using the Miifoto on Twitter, but I would rather do other things with my time.
I find myself just doing random stuff on it, it is nice getting 270 platinum points a week though.
You people need to get some friends
That reminds me, I gotta get my daily dose of Miitomo.
I removed it. Not for me.
What's with the identical posts about miitomo every other day?
Nintendo, why isn't Miitomo available in Norway
I'm having the opposite problem with friends, I connected to a couple on Twitter and one face to face and then just from the friend of friends adding I found I have more than I can handle. Too much activity on there can be just as bad as not enough.
@MetaSmasher Is your phone rooted? There's a workaround, but it's not always successful. You can run Miitomo on a PC in Bluestacks with the same workaround too. I tried it because I prefer to type on a physical keyboard, but it's not great for the games. I'll use a bluetooth keyboard instead.
Some devices don't seem to be compatible at all, but there's scope for Nintendo to patch so maybe not all hope is lost. Samsung look to be the least compatible, unfortunately.
@thehoppypoppy
This site does not have an official miitomo thread in the forums where users are sharing their Twitter accounts or Facebook accounts?
They really need to make it so miitomo can add friends via your Nintendo Friend codes.
Until then, I really got to get on the forum and share my twitter account.
But to everyone who says it's pointless when none of your friends have it, I was starting to get there but then two of mine downloaded today... what do you do when your friends download it after you got rid of it and they eventually get rid of it the same day?
It'd be nice to have a better way of organizing friends or managing them somehow.
I literally just play it for the My Nintendo coins now. I feel like I'm annoying my friends cos I hassle them every day for 5 hearts and 5 comments.
If I wasn't a sucker for 'free' stuff then I'd have likely uninstalled by now. It's not terrible... but it's not particularly fun either.
I've now got to play my iPhone just so I can get Wario Ware for free. So annoying, because I actually just want to play my threeds.
@Raptor78 I'm avoiding that by only adding close friends. WIth 2 friends it was boring, with 4 it was sustainable, now I've got 9 and I'm glad it've only been adding family and close friends. I'll probably max out at 20 there aren't many more that I'm close enough with that I would share this with them. Right now I have 5 friends and 4 immediate family members and it's been good. I'd like all my immediate family (might be able to get that to happen) and there's a couple more friends I'd like to see on here, but that would be ideal to me.
@Sakura The likely reason that children under 13 can't use it is because it is illegal to knowingly collect information on minors under 13 in many countries.
Anybody else getting the message: "I was going to ask you something, but I forgot." What does it mean? Have I run out of questions to answer?
@ennan
So I'm not the only one
I've only got 4 friends on there right now, mostly friends of friends that I don't know in real life. Funny that I now know things about those people that I do not know about many of my close real life friends. That's kind of what's cool about the app, and I wish more of my real life friends had it so I could be more interested in their answers.
Still, good first effort at a phone app by Nintendo. It's not for everyone, but it's for a lot of people.
The app seems to be losing it's buzz, compared to the first few days a lot less people comment and heart and I don't blame them! Honestly if there weren't any rewards for my Nintendo (Therefore no platinum coins to be earnt) I'm honestly not sure if I would use that often is at all I probably would've tried it out but whether I actually would use it probably not after a few days the 35 coins a day keep me playing that's for sure!
Only on it to get the coins, no one I know uses it, and it bugs out all the time on my ipod. Have to keep on telling it to clear cache more or less everytime I load it, so takes an age to re-load
@Drumpler That's interesting. I shall have to investigate.
I think we need longer than one week here. I heard some Japanese impressions recently which were finding they need a way to group or filter friends as they simply had too many answers and comments from people they didn't really know so were stuck with having to delete a load of people (on other social networks you can mute people) and some others were feeling a bit burned out by it as well.
I have no friends that use it but I'm okay with that as it means I spend less time getting the my Nintendo points (which I'm unlikely to actually need but earning them 70% faster than I was is nice).
@Freeon-Leon Facebook without friends you can still join groups, comment on content and generate content, like and follow things as well as have a login for many websites. Miitomo is a lot more limited in this respect.
@MetaSmasher To copy and paste what I was told. Miitomo will not work on a rooted Android phone. A workaround that you can do is that if you have xposed, you can install the "Root Cloak" module (make sure you whitelist Miitomo) then download Miitomo security bypasser (http://bit.ly/21F3vZD), then it should work. Do remember to turn on the root cloak otherwise it still
doesn't work (this step baffled me for a while)
@Daemonite I had one friend and it never suggested any friends for me until I sent requests to his friends. Tap your friends face in your friend list or one of their comments and then tap the friends tab to get a list of their friends. You can then send them friends requests via miitomo whether you are friends on twitter/FB or not.
It also has been the #1 free app since launch in the Netherlands, don't know anything about grossing tho
Not released in my country. poopitypoopoop region lock and poopitypoopoop nintendo/dena.
@Minish Language! (Jazzer).
The beginning of the end of dedicated portables from Nintendo, right here.
