FYI: Those of you who aren't sure if you want the digital version or physical version of Super Mario Maker in the US, you can still get a PHYSICAL "idea book" like you do with the retail copy of the game.
All you have to do is call the Club Nintendo/eShop support number listed on the digital receipt. They'll ask for your hardware serial number (on the receipt), e-mail address, and shipping address. It only took about 7 minutes on the phone, and about half of it was just waiting for him to place the order.
The books should ship out soon and will take about a week once shipped, according to the guy on the phone.
I'm not a fan of the idea of making amiibo the ONLY way to unlock a piece of content. It's used well in Smash, as you can easily take your figure player to another system (or even a different version).
However, the Splatoon amiibo and amiibo in Mario Kart aren't a great use in my opinion. I think the content in these two games should be unlockable instantly with the amiibo AND also be unlockable through normal gameplay. (Nothing ridiculous such as win 32 races in a row online in first place for Mario Kart... More like reach X amount of coins, where X is a reasonable number.)
I honestly don't see this being much of a problem for Nintendo for a few reasons...
1) Nintendo is selling out of their stock for figures that aren't Mario/Peach/Donkey Kong. For the most part, they're making every bit of money that is possible from the amount of amiibo they produce at the price they are selling. 2) The main appeal of amiibo are the sweet figures! Most people (including myself) like the long lasting appeal of seeing an Inkling or Princess Rosalina on their desk - not just their usage in a handful of games. 3) The product costs more than multiple amiibo (roughly 4 and a half plus shipping). This is a big turn off to most people. 4) Nobody is being fooled into thinking it is an official Nintendo product 5) You can't buy it in person or from an online retailer that is widely known and mostly trusted.
I can see how some people would argue it's piracy and how some people would argue it isn't. I just don't see it being a big enough of a deal for Nintendo's lawyers to deal with.
@tobbonni I wouldn't completely rule it out once there are more fighters. They are already doing that with the Mii costumes, so it wouldn't be a stretch for them to do it with fighters.
It doesn't surprise me at all. Piracy would have been a much bigger issue, as mentioned by some people already. Plus, we would get a bunch of awful games trying to get into the eShop.
I think if it's something that actually adds, like an expansion pack, it's great. MK8 is the best example of this in recent times. I would have a problem with it if it ruined online play such as giving out unbalanced kart parts.
What I really cannot stand are microtransactions for lives, content cut from the game so it can be DLC/on disk dlc, cosmetic things, and things that give an advantage online. Part of the fun in games with costumes is earning them from playing - not paying for them (or making it possible to unlock without paying, but near impossible.) And giving an advantage in online ruins it for those who don't pay extra.
The Mii costume pack is venturing into territory I don't appreciate. The extra fighters are ok as they weren't cut from the game to be DLC (as far as we know). I think if they plan on adding a lot of them, they'll need to lower the price.
I got it within a few days of it's release, and I'm in the US. Someone at my campus set up a "HomePass" StreetPass relay and got his. It spread through the whole campus in about three days.
A big problem of microtransactions for "lives" and such are that with smartphones, you can pay anywhere you have a signal. With a 3DS, you have to have wifi. It makes it less likely for a lot of people to do impulse buys of lives.
@TingLz but what I'm saying is eBay would never do that, because that would mean losing out on a lot of money. Scalpers suck, but eBay would be losing a lot of money if they kicked em off.
@kensredemption Why would eBay do that? It's completely against their interests. They get a cut of all the sales, so it would be silly for them to do it.
@Kit The GBA VC on the 3DS is bare bones - you can't access the home menu, no save states, etc. Nintendo doesn't wanna release something like that for sale. I have a feeling we might see a better GBA VC on the New 3DS, though.

Hopefully it's free DLC like the Mercedes DLC in Mario Kart 8.

I'm not complaining about only having global matchmaking, but regional matchmaking would be welcome.
