While I would want some new blood in the roster, my vote went to Wolf. I loved playing as him in Brawl, and it was a massive shame that he got cut from Smash 4's roster and did not even get the nod as DLC that Mewtwo and Lucas got.

The other characters like Bayonetta, Wonder Red, and other will likely get their shot in Smash 5. I would rather see some of the older cut veterans make a comeback to round out 4's roster.

@Spoony_Tech Possible, but extremely unlikely. Nintendo isn't going to go through all that licensing to get a character in their crossover fighting game who won't appear in anything they can cash in on. At least the other third-party characters can and will appear in games on Nintendo consoles, giving them at least a little bit of incentive to include them. Banjo will never be in another Nintendo game, so Nintendo doesn't stand any good reason to use the advertising space in this game for him. Not to mention, they'd have to give something to Microsoft to even include him. And I'm sure they don't want to have to shell out any money to one of their biggest rivals.

As much as I like Shovel Knight, I don't find the character worthy enough to stand between many of those 'veteran' characters. Though I felt the same way about some characters that are already in Smash 4 (Wii Fit Trainer f.e.), so that wouldn't discredit his chances of making it in.

I'd choose either Rayman, because he is a really iconic character that seems worthy of a place in Smash, or Waddle Dee, since Kirby could use extra representation [though 3 characters isn't on a the low side] and it seems quite easy to come up with an original moveset for him.

I doubt either of them will join the fray though, but obviously Rayman has a much higher chance, so I'll be voting for him.

Final Smash could be a culmination of yo-yo upgrades throughout the battle from yo-yo to shooting star to grabbing the smash ball for "SUPER NNNNNOVA!" The worse you're doing, throughout the stage, the quicker these upgrades to the yo-yo happen? Taunts would be 1) bananas in ears, 2) flicking his yo-yo around, 3) point and swing bat and 4) ROB (from the submarine) materializing, giving advice, blinking his "eyes" in the process.

Of the ones on the list, I'd vote for Wolf, Shovel Knight, and Shantae. Wolf mainly because he was in Brawl and wasn't really a clone character. Yes he had the same basic moves as Fox and Falco, but they had much more impact and weight to them. Shovel Knight has an entire arsenal of moves and relics at his disposal all for the sake of Shovelry. His Final Smash could have him call upon Shield Knight for assistance. And Shantae could use a mix of her genie magic and the pirate tools she gets in The Pirate's Curse. Shantae's Final Smash could resemble Luigi's Negative Zone Final Smash from Brawl, where she dances for a moment to cause the space around her to cause various effects on opponents

I like Bayonetta the games (the 1st one more than the second), but I don't really care that much about Bayonetta the character. Also, I don't think there is a way to make Bayonetta playable without butchering her anyway, as was Snake who didn't use guns in Brawl.

I like Golden Sun, but I wouldn't choose Isaac. Although maybe if a Golden Sun character was playable Nintendo would actually have another good Golden Sun game made because Dark Dawn was a disaster and ended in a cliffhanger.

@KodyDawg Fair enough...although Ridley plays a much more key role in his stage, enough that I don't know how they'd replace him like they do Toon Link on the Train stage. That said, I really want Dark Samus dang it! The Metroid universe needs a villain representing it in Smash and I say Dark Samus would be a more sensible route than Ridley!

Also, I'd love another Xenoblade character. Maybe Dunban? Of course, we already have a lot of sword fighters and Dunban is a part of Shulk's final smash...Reyn would work though. I've often thought since Ricky appears as an assist trophy and in Shulk's final smash, Reyn should replace him in one of those roles, but he'd make a good fighter too.

My second choice would definitely be isaac since he was an assist trophy already in brawl and so was little mac and he got the whole full character treatment and he would definitely be a perfect fit in smash...I would just hope they make him stand out from all the other sword fighters.

I would love to see a character from Monster Hunter. It could be a generic hunter in low level armor with traps, bombs and some moves with the sword or even a Felyne/Palico with a similar setup but less serious.
But since that will not happen I will go with the Splatoon characters.

This whole poll is a stupid idea, and I'll never get behind why Sakurai agreed to this. He himself stated that deciding the roster, both veterans and newcomers, is a very difficult process of finding characters that are both unique and sensible for the game (though he's been kinda hit-and-miss with that in Smash 4), and now he allows fans who don't have a goddamn sliver of an idea about these kinds of intricacies to simply vote for anything - LITERALLY ANYTHING! WHAT! THE! HELL?!
Popular characters of this age are simply not popular for being reasonable contestants for a fighter, especially Smash, which follows majorly different parameters compared to most other fighters out there. Popular characters are popular for being good at their own game, and fighters outside of Smash don't exist on WiiU at all (Tekken doesn't count, that's an insult to the fighting game genre), meaning that none of these characters are even remotely suitable for this!

But even worse, my nightmare prediction came true: all Smash forums and communities, including MiiVerse, have become absolutely unbearable. It's all about "why the character of my choice should be voted for Smash and not your choice", and in such an obnoxious way that it's headache-inducing (imagine looking up your feed for some artists' latest creations, only to find it mercilessly flooded by some of the most ridiculous vote beggary in history)!

I tried to visualize a character that would be more then just a change of skin from an existing character such as Waluigi or Daisy, and even though a different Mario suit character might be really cool, we have enough Mario. I could also live without Wolf. He's mostly just a slower, more powerful Fox/Falco....no need. I didn't vote for the Ice Climbers even though I miss them and wouldn't mind seeing them in the game.

Cloud Strife did appear in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the Gameboy Advance.

I kinda imagine Professor Layton to have a weird moveset like the villager's. I think his normal attacks would be his fencing moveset, but his specials would be something a bit less... mundane: The Dog from Curious Village as a drone-like attack, A giant hint coin as a projectile, a Hanglider (from multiple games - seriously, where does he get those from) as his recovery, and Oh, I dunno, the Painting from Curious Village or the Sticker Book from Lost/Unwound Future as a blocking move.

His Final Smash would have to be him drinking some tea, and ramming his opponents with the laytonmobile a la Captain Falcon.

I think matchsticks could play a part somewhere, they always seem to turn up in the puzzles. Or saws. How else does he cut all those planks of wood?

It would be awesome to see Toad in Super Smash Bros. After all these years of taking and countering hits for Princess Peach it would be great to see Toad finally get some well deserved revenge.

One character that is totally obscure is Mike from StarTropics. Hardly anybody talks about StarTropics or played it, but it was one of my favorites for the NES.

Sorry but Nintendo made it clear characters that originated in Video Games only are eligible. Someone tried the anime characters with Brawl, and you see how well THAT worked...

There's no way Shovel Knight is getting in, totally hopeless. Shovel Knight hasn't even been released in Japan. They haven't a clue who he is.

I heard Nintendo of America had to beg Sakurai just to get that CommanderVideo trophy in the game.

I have a feeling that they are working on Wolf for release later this year anyways. The fighter ballot ends on October 3rd, meaning we won't get the fighter(s) from it until March/April of next year (assuming they wait until the ballot is over to begin working on fighters from it). Lucas is coming in June of this year. That's a pretty big gap right there... and there's a new Star Fox coming at the end of the year (or at least supposed to be)....

Here's what I don't want: characters that never had an appearance on Nintendo, or debuted on tv/movie. I will literally be happy with anything else!

Shovel Knight for me. I'd really like that.
But I also really like the idea of Bayonetta. It would point to that game and while I haven't even played it, it's a well-regarded title that gives the Wii U some credit with the wider net of core gamers who aren't paying attention normally.

I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed by the result of this so called poll! But it's got lips wagging and Smash Bros in the Spotlight. I just CANNOT see a unique character being developed from scratch. Just because they'll consider something, there's no guarantee anyone's going to get anything. Wolf is a name I've seen mentioned in every poll of this poll. My guess is that the winner will be him. And since he was in Brawl and omitted I have a sneaking suspicion it's him all along!!

Ugh...I can't imagine how they're going to have to dig through all the stupid suggestions in that ballot thing. Goku isn't happening, Ridley isn't happening, Sora isn't happening...blah blah blah.

I voted for Ryu. Great diversity with hand-to-hand combat and ranged attacks. Fighting with Ryu in a crazy setting like this would be fun.

To be honest; out of those options I think I'd go with Splatoon's Inklings. I mean if it's a matter of maybe getting one and not the others. I would however love to see Shovel Knight and Shantae too. Let's be honest with ourselves. Any of these would be good to have. I know some of us would purchase all of them just for the sake of having them. But again, let's not kid ourselves; we KNOW why Banjo Kazooie are not an option on this poll. Microsoft has a death grip on the rights. Which is why, obviously, Nintendo used the Duck Hunt dog and duck duo instead. I am sure Banjo Kazooie would play exactly the same and have pretty much all the same moves. I wouldn't mind Scrooge McDuck from Ducktales, since Capcom let them use mega man already it should be OK I think. Or if not, they can just throw in Cranky Kong and give him all the moves they would have given to scrooge. It's a win/win. But, what I want to see, NEED to see, and have been begging to see since they announced Smash Bros for Wii U, is Klonoa! The dude fits perfectly in this game. His moves, power ring and double jump, Boomerang, bat, his ears that help him float, and just his spunk and all together look, is perfect for smash bros. Pac man needs a fellow Namco partner for team battles, come on.... Klonoa is who I voted for on the Smash Bros site, but on this poll I choose Bayonetta. Just because.

I voted for Shantae, but Banjo would have been a possibility too. I like that Wolf was included on this list. But Bayonetta I hadn't really considered before and she would actually be a great fighter. Another idea I saw over the weekend was for the Reckless Silhouette Guy (Wii warning screen).

Shovel Knight. I'm desperate for a portrayal of him in 3D.

Think about it: what if you could change the types of Knights on the character select menu, just like Bowser Jr.? If not, what about having a transformation move similar to Shulk's Monando Arts?

@Sanya Still though, it gives an idea of who people want. At least it allows them to throw away all of the Ridley, Goku, Shrek, etc votes easily. So far I've seen the most thought-out votes from the King K Rool camp. The people on Smashboards are using those 500 characters to thoroughly describe why they want K Rool and are even giving ideas for a full moveset. That right there is giving King K Rool an advantage. Having both the popular vote and well-thought out votes tips the scales in K Rool's favor honestly.

Edit: Part of that might be my slight personal bias towards King K Rool though

I voted for Bayonetta given the limitations of the list. I wouldn't mind Inkling, Ice Climbers, Snake, Isaac, or Shantae though. I'm not completely on board with the King K Rool fanboys...but I wouldn't hate him either (as long as it was the pirate version).

And I think I'm the poster boy for the anti-shovel-knight movement. I just think he's so overrated and undeserving. To each their own. I'd probably just focus shovel knight players down like I do with scrubby Little Macs

Debatable if Nintendo, &/or Sakurai are truly going to make a character by polls. It would be much work to sort through all the spam votes, & even then, re-tallying reasonable choices out of all the votes. I won't say it's not possible Nintendo/Sakurai is actually doing this, but more than likely, Nintendo is doing this for publicity; they can get away with this, as there is no way vote tallies can be realistically accounted for, by the general internet populace, since the internet is as sizable as it is.

On the off-chance this poll is real, I put down Lip the Fairy from Panel de Pon, which later kept changing themes, to Tetris Attack first, then became Pokemon Puzzle League, then just Puzzle League. Nintendo game, Nintendo character. No license issues. Of course, PDP has only resurfaced as a Japan VC game in 2007/8(?), & was otherwise last seen in Nintendo Puzzle Collection on the Gamecube in Japan, so...

Fun side fact: This (tidbit) fits right into the game we're talking about here, Princess Lana from the same cartoon, was actually based on Palutena from the Nes Kid Icarus. The other thing is CN has never been in a real game.

Simon Belmont from the Nes Castlevania games would be great, since then aside from the main character, the entire Captain N N-team would be in the game(BlackNerd Andre joke, aside)

@Spoony: Not sure NoJ would feel comfortable having Lincoln, since he's a symbol of America, or more accurately, associated w/ America. Unless, CNS(Code Name Steam) has, or will soon be released in Japan, w/ the Lincoln character.

Shantae would be interesting, but to my knowledge, aside from the GBC game, Risky's Revenge is already on non-Nintendo platforms, & S&tPC probably will also be eventually. Also, Shantae's physic, not sure Nintendo would be ok that in Smash. Remember, Thjarja's trophy bit the dust, for sexualization, apparently.

I actually suggested Inkling on the Smash Bros. website, so I decided to do it again. It would make a different playstyle and represent 1 of Nintendo's newest IPs (although I think what influenced me was that Splatoon was also featured in the Nintendo Direct).
As much as I would like Ice Climbers to come back, if they can't due to technical difficulties, that's fine. My other choices would've been Shovel Knight, Shantae and Rayman (if they didn't have 3 3rd party characters already)

Out of all those on the list the one I want the most is Isaac from Golden Sun! That series needs some love!

@crzysortagmer: If this ballot is for real, Nintendo probably has some software for removing entries from an ip address, that has already voted once. This would compensate for spam votes(more than 1 per ip address). But, then again, it's debatable if this is not just publicity for Nintendo, or as Quorthon said, a way to distract people from begging Sakurai on social sites, & Miiverse.

@Capt_N The votes can be tallied through a computer program. The program would basically just search for votes for the same character and tally them up that way. Then all of the votes for characters like Goku, Ridley, and Shrek can be tossed at once. That makes the process much easier.

If the ballot was just a publicity stunt to distract people from harassing Sakurai, the backlash to not getting at least one character from it would be ridiculous. They pretty much have to go through with it at this point as Nintendo isn't exactly on the best terms with their fans at the moment as it is (amiibo shortages, lack of Battle Frontier and difficulty in Pokemon ORAS, etc).

@Sanya I think 2 characters would honestly be the most they'd pull from this. I'm only going to expect 1 though. Gotta keep my expectations in check .

@IceClimbers It's just a matter of time. Smashboards will soon be consumed by all the unreasonable ideas and discussions for Smash characters, as well. It's kinda terrifying to see some forums/boards drop to LoL-community levels in such a short amount of time, so I don't see how this'll end well in the long term.
But I fully understand why Kamiya is blocking this stuff on Twitter - I'm currently filling up my blacklist with spammers whose vote begging made it into my MiiVerse feed, and I got a lot to do thanks to the "might be interesting to you" feature and telling me about other peoples' yeahs.
However, I wasn't aware that even developers get in on this! Man... that's one unique lowpoint.
Also, I'm with you on how this might backfire if Nintendo is careless with the votes. Just one thing about the filtering system: it might get problematic when taking into account the lack of grammatical ability of many internet users, meaning that there's gonna be that guy who somehow manages to write Goku, Geno, or even Guy wrong. Gonna be a hassle to filter Gkou, Genno, and gy.

@Klimbatize I can only hope so, but I'm still worried that this is going to leave a bad taste, not to speak of the reactions of voters whoe choice didn't make it possibly starting a spam assault out of nowhere.

I really want to see Snake again because I am a huge metal gear fan, and he was a fun character in smash.

However, since this is Sakurai, I think the odds of getting Amazon Pandora or Phosphora would be better, and I'd love to see them, especially Amazon Pandora.

Bayonetta ! She already has neutral combo attacks,Taunts,Costumes and one of her alternate costumes can be Jeanne.Her songs also can be included and a stage can be seasoned like the one in the beginning of bayonetta 2 where she fights on a Jet.

I agree with others that shovel knight would be great but, Bayonetta all the way.

Here are my suggestions - what do you think?

M.O.N.I.T.A. - was kind of surprised she wasn't already on the roster when it was announced. Her final smash as Dark M.O.N.I.T.A. would be hilarious, as would be her monotone taunting and battle cries

Waluigi - so long overdue. Make him quick, lithe and stealthy, with special abilities to set up comedic traps not unlike Villager. His tented-finger, evilly-grinning amiibo would be a must-own

Captain Toad - imagine him cowering adorably when putting up his shield! And his pickaxe would be a great final smash. Adding a proper Captain Toad amiibo would provide an opportunity for even more add-on / DLC content - I don't feel that the Hide & Seek pixel Toad was very adequate. This could possibly be paired with Toadette

Inklings - a no brainer! Excellent attacks, visually awesome, great range of skins to choose from, amiibo already exist

Bayonetta - another strong female character, and again an excellent moveset to choose from. Her final smash would be truly formidable. Bayonetta's evil-not-evil attitude and unusual personality make her an easy favourite. Plus we need more strong ladies on the team.

Professor Layton - a well-loved character and a quirky addition. He could use any number of strange devices found in his adventures as special attacks, in addition to standard fencing moves. What if his final smash was a puzzle, timed, that dealt damage according to the speed and accuracy of solving? Definitely an opportunity here for that classic Nintendo creativity

Phoenix Wright - I bet under that suit Phoenix is totally shredded! A physical fighter able to put up a good defense (get it?), and his final smash hurling 'Objection!'s and 'Take That!'s a la Wii Fit Trainer's yoga moves would be very awesome.

Bayonetta should have been there day one. Obviously they'd have to censor her a little bit, but she's perfect for Smash, and it'd also be good exposure for her games.
I mean, how many people wanted to play Fire Emblem after they encountered Marth and Roy in Melee all those years ago? Same thing.

Snake, because his moveset and his his hypothetical amiibo are beyond cool.

I voted for Prof. Layton. In the "Why should they be a fighter" box, I explained that he may be a gentleman, but in the ring, he is anything but gentle with his opponents.

Isaac just fits like a glove in Smash Bros. His move set has potential to be one of the most creative in the series' history due to his psynergy.

Isaac would be amazing. I'd also really like Snake to come back since he was my main in Brawl and I just love the possibilities in that moveset.

Shovel Knight would be really nice, too. I enjoyed that game quite a bit and the character's more than peculiar fighting style would add even more quirky variety to the roster.

There is NO way that they are going to put Bayonetta in that game. No way. If they try to, they're going to have to tone her down, but that's just not worth it at that point.

The main characters I'd like to see are Dr. Eggman and Banjo Kazooie. Or maybe Slippy Frog or Peppy Hare from Star Fox. Sooo many good choices. This just goes to show how much untapped potential Super Smash Bros has for years to come. So many battle level ideas, so little time. That is, IF there is another one under Sakurai's supervision. I doubt he would trust anyone else to do his job.

I actually voted for Bayonetta and Wonder Red as my third party characters, Platinum gave Wii U owners awesome games with Bayonetta 1&2 plus wonderful 101, as for first party characters I really want king k rool, need more villains Muahahaha (evil laugh)

I'd vote for Rundas from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Based on his abilities he could have a unique playstyle based mostly around his cryokinetic abilities such as a double jump that involves him gliding on ice, using ice as a recovery, an ice beam for a standard special, Ice missiles as the side special and ice armor that could work like Robin's tomes. It'd have a recharge rate to avoid being spammed but could make him harder to launch but conversely he'd move slower and wouldn't jump as high. In addition, he could use twin ice swords for standard and aerial combos and incorporate ice into his throws. My second choice would then be Bayonetta.

For me, I want King K Rool, Inkling, and Isaac the most. Shantae, Shovel Knight, and Bomberman are up there too.

@Kaze_Memaryu From the looks of it, the community on Smashboards seems determined to keep it from degrading too much, especially when it comes to degrading into a "my character is better than yours" flamewar. They mostly want friendly competition and healthy discussion over moveset potential and things like that. Some of the support threads for certain characters are even supportive of other characters (for example, the King K Rool thread seems to support Dixie Kong being playable as well).

Since the ballot continues until October, I imagine a lot of the more casual people will forget about it entirely by mid-May, leaving it open for the dedicated and passionate fans so long as they keep at it without being overly obnoxious.

Yeah, it's rather low of some of these developers. Others, such as WayForward, are just joining in on what fans started though.

Voted for Sheena from Tales of Symphonia on the SSB website. Simply because I've never heard or seen her mentioned in any polls and I think her move set would be unique with the elemental cards and martial arts.

Dunno why people want Banjo so badly. He's not part of Nintendo anymore. Please don't get him involved in Smash. Even Snake would be better.

..that said, my vote went for Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western. He's already an Assist Trophy, you say? Big whoop! Have them pull a Toon Link, where his Assist Trophy doesn't show up when he's in the fight himself. eShop representation is needed here, and Dillon is perfect for that.

Sakurai already stated there will be no transformations in mid-battle, which is why Pokemon Trainer along with Ivysaur and Squirtle was removed and Shiek & Zero Suit Samus were made separate fighters. So your Young Link idea just bit the dust.

Sakurai stated that the hardware limitations of the 3DS was the reason that transformations mid-battle had been removed, and they want to keep the rosters the same on both versions of the game. However, the New 3DS was created long into the development of Smash. It seems very possible to me that the New 3DS and its more powerful processing power actually can handle transforming characters. As such a transforming character could possibly be added now as DLC but on the handheld front it would only be available as a download if you are playing Smash on a New 3DS and not one of the old models.

My main picks are King K. Rool and/or Dixie Kong from Donkey Kong Country, Bomberman (from Bomberman), and Bandana Dee from Kirby. I've heard so many amazing ideas though that I can't possibly say all of the ones I support. Snake, Amatserasu, Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, Ice Climbers, Paper Mario.... all of them would be good! I'm just glad we're getting more fighters and will take pretty much anything Nintendo gives us

Out of these I chose bayonetta. My personal pick is Krystal from Star Fox followed by Isaac then random army guy from battalion wars. 3rd party will be Crono and his final smash can be a random double or triple tech move.

I voted Dixie Kong, love those games. I think she deserves the nod being a major character who's starred in her own game, recently made a comeback, is a girl in a series without female representation, and has many obvious moves. I wouldn't mind a few others:
Takamura (never played the game much but he'd be a cool character to bring back)
Adam Malcovich (Snake clone, more representation from Metroid)
Vaati (He's cool, Zelda probably is under represented considering how major a series it is)
Mario RPG (Geno and Malo, like Zelda/Sheik or Pokemon Trainer)

Waluigi (not too interested in him but he'd be a good character to rep. the sport games with his moveset)

Some costumes like Mrs.Pacman would be great, and i love the MiiFighter costumes, maybe the 1080/Waverace characters can get skins. I'd love to see Zero, Cranky Kong, or even get characters like Tails or even a Dr.Robotnik in MiiFighter form.

I don't know why more people haven't said this already but SCOTT PILGRIM (as unlikely as it will be) has to be a character. Like just the character and setting of the series makes so much sense for him to be in the game. He's a fighter and loves video games. Like can anybody else back me up or at least word this better than me because I can't articulate properly what I'm trying to say!!!

He's got a great Flying move, Down Stomp, Throw (a kick), and even a distance Attack: throwing Bob-bombs. As long as he's not a clone of Luigi or Wario. I picture him as a character that has a large, quick, step but a slower jumps and attack.

My second choice would be: Advance Wars CO! It would be similar to Poke-master, With a Plane, Mech, Mid-tank, Copter...

I'm almost positive, However, that there will be a Wool Yoshi, and/or a rainbow curse Clay Kirby (That would work like Pac-man). Another probable character would be the inklings.
I wouldn't mind seeing more Sonic Characters, Knuckles or Tails could work similarly.

Seems like Dixie Kong, Crystal, Viridi, and Daisy were all forgotten, and their actually reasonable characters...
