Mario Kart 8 will have a load of new content soon, with the 200cc racing class arriving as a free update for all players. We've already seen footage showing just how much it'll shake up the way we race, with the speed on offer seemingly more that the 50cc boost suggested by the name.
Comparisons with 150cc laps are certainly nice to see, and Nintendo UK has been producing some handy videos to give us a sense of the extra speed. Another fresh video shows off the Piranha Plant Pipeway track, with the new speed class zipping around for an impressive time. As we've seen previously fresh shortcuts can be opened up in 200cc, and in this case the kart's glider has a whole lot of extra lift.
Check it out below and let us know whether you're looking forward to this update on 23rd April.

I think more people will complain this is too fast then those that will be happy we finally got more speed!
Can't wait! Will definitely be a challenge
Fingers crossed there's a quick select option for 200cc online rmultiplayer, rather than having to create/join a tournament.
So Mario Kart 8 is turning into Crash Team Racing, huh.
Seriously, in case you missed that Playstation title, give it a try. That game was fast.
Which is fine in my book, given this means Mario Kart is tackling the one game that managed to... "outmariokart" it.
That looks great, though I am probably too much lacking in skill to be any good in 200cc class.
@AlexSora89 My thoughts exactly.
@AlexSora89 ctr was sooooooooo good!!! the drifting mechanics were way better IMO
@AlexSora89 I dont hink CTR was very good, i had fun with it, but I think Maro Kart is still the better Racing Game
You know, just for kicks, I want to see a comparison video between 50cc and 200cc.
This looks like it's going to be super hectic so naturally, I'll give it a try.
@Discostew That would be insane! 😱
200cc is about 12 seconds fasters than 150cc.
I'm almost OK with not getting a new F-Zero now.
Oy... Why do they keep uploading footage of 200cc mode, but not any of the new DLC courses? Come on Nintendo?
Im not sure if this works in any other mode but in 200cc mode, if you collect 10 coins to get the maximum speed for the kart, the next coin you collect will instantly give you 1 boost mushroom. Check 2:18 sec in and watch closely

Just recently played Double Dash and good Lord, that game is twice as fast as MK8. It was such a noticable difference, that when I went from MK8 150cc to DD 150cc, i was crashing into every wall. Despite being the reigning DD champ, it was like i never played before. Then, after being out right humiliated in DD, i went back to MK8 and it was like Elderly Mode was turned on. So slow, in fact, that i caught myself pouting about it. This announcement, is a God send to me. I refuse to even watch the video and spoil it for myself. Can't wait!
Side note: someone else told me to check out Crash Team Racing and said the same thing, that it was a better game... it was not. Not even close.
This looks insane. I can't wait, but I'm scared by how fast it is! Imagine throwing a mushroom into the mix as well.
Can we somehow calculate if this is indeed twice as fast as 100cc?
(also, I'd love to see a track actually built for 200cc. Maybe some of the new ones will be better suited?)
I don't know why but the 200cc footage has me interested in MK8 again even though I didn't particularly enjoy it or get into when I played it previously
@AlexSora89 Damn, this looks even faster than Crash Team Racing to me! Mario Kart takes a TON of influence from that game. The boosts from drifting, the "hang-time turbos" you get from jumping off ramps. Hell, even the "gravity" gimmick in Mario Kart 8 is ripped right out of Crash Nitro Kart.
I really, really, really want a faster mode in Mario Kart 7!
>tfw still no Wii U.
Will mirror mode be based off 200cc or will it still be based off 150cc once the update comes out?
@Discostew how bout a 4-player split screen-esque approach. Where each square is at a different cc.
omg.
as if this track wasn't hectic enough online D:
I want to see how the F-Zero track goes with this kinda speed 8-)
jesus
@B64111980 Not sure which one you're talking about. Crash Nitro Kart tried to be Crash Team Racing 2, but ended up being a little slower and heavier. Crash Tag Team Racing had some interesting ideas, but was flawed in its own ways. Neither of them innovated the genre in the way Crash Team Racing did on the ps1. Yes, it was definitely influenced by Mario Kart and DKR, but it more than stood on its own. And it's probably my all-time favorite game.
I am looking forward to putting my MK skills to the test when this finally drops, but I have a small concern about the thin line between fun and broken. Guess only time will tell, and worse case scenario, 150cc will always be there.
Anyone who wants to see a truly broken experience, get a N64 gameshark and Mario Kart 64 with the 300cc cheat enabled and you will really understand why I am slightly concerned.
I always played at 50cc and sometimes at 100cc, but never 150cc. That's just not fun and i'm more irritated than enjoying. So 200cc no go. But good for the ones who can enjoy it
@AshFoxX My only concern is that the gamebreaking glitches that were present in past games become possible again, especially that Grumble Volcano one in MKWii which completes 3 laps in about 40 seconds.
Still too slow. We need 250CC
Holy shart this is going to be EPIC! I've been waiting ages for them to make an MK have 200cc. So glad to finally see it happen! So pumped!
Haha, the speed is insane. The guys at the office will love this.
Sounds like someone has been slipping Nitrous in everyone's gas tank!
Forget 200cc. This plays more like 300cc Or 500!!!
@Gen0neD The reigning DD champ? Based on what criteria? Who awarded you this title?
If you were the "reigning DD champ" you wouldn't be so lost when going back to it. You're nothing at DD, you're no champ.
@mjc0961 Does it really matter? Does it? I think probably not...
Maybe the next Mario Kart will be like a fusion of F-Zero X Mario Kart, since the karts can hover now too. Like have the F-Zero characters mixed in with the Mario Cast and Tracks from both series
@CAM290 I think Captain Falcon X Mario Kart would seem more likely. It's almost like Nintendo's forgotten about the other 29+ pilots for the most part.
Is this Nintendo's way of killing F-Zero?
I remember when they said that we didn't really need Wave Rave for Wii because there was a jet-ski mini game in Wii Sports Resort... :S
Beaten MK8, gotten all trophies and doc to date so I'm really looking forward to this. Speed looks insane!
More options = better. Also, since i play a LOT of Mariokart and150cc offline is not a challenge anymore, great addition.
@mjc0961 Well, you're not nice. I was texting and driving, which you know, is against the law... so if you must know, that would be reigning "household champ". And that criteria wold be based off of the years of spankings I consistently gave to all MK comers. Sorry, if this doesn't meet your standards. I'll be sure to take your strict opinion into consideration next time.
This does look fun, but some courses I am sure are going to feel 'broken' on 200cc.
@Sforzando it came out before MK 64? I thought MK64 came before but I could be wrong because I remember getting boosts from drifting in MK 64
@Blastcorp64 I could be wrong.
Woah that's insane!
@majinx07 Considering the placement of the 200cc mode in the menu in the video in the Nintendo Direct, I would assume mirror mode will stay the same.
@AlexSora89
It's not only fast but easily better than any Mario Kart title to date. Much better jump and slide boost mechanics.
@VanillaLake
And neither of them was better than the original.
