Disney Infinity 3.0 will be a major challenger in the toys-to-life space later this year, going up against the next Skylanders (we assume) and LEGO Dimensions, while Nintendo will likely continue its own model with yet more amiibo functionality. When it comes to buying plastic toys that double as DLC unlocks, this really is the golden era.
As for Disney Infinity 3.0, there have already been rumours of characters that'll feature, and with Disney owning so many huge intellectual properties it's inevitable that certain others are in the frame. Retailer leaks do appear to have spilled on a Starter Pack for the next entry, now, but if you don't want it spoiled then go no further. We've given all the warnings we can.
As is the norm with these annual releases there's a Starter Pack that helps newcomers get into the new toy range and franchise, while serving as an advert for the tentpole franchise. Last year it was Marvel at the core of the game, but this time it looks set to be Star Wars. Notably though, and unsurprising considering a young target audience, it's the Star Wars that fans of the animated series will know and love.
The leaked art for the Starter Pack doesn't reference the new film (due this December) as a result, but the choice of this franchise is certainly smart considering the hype around the brand.
You can see the leaked image below, are you excited about this?

So glad they went w/ Anakin and that girl from the tv show, saves me a whole lot of money right there.
I guess Jar Jar will be sold separately.
Though last year had Marvel and the cheaper Toy Box classics, so I suppose they could still have that 2nd toy box version later in the year.
My Nephew loves to collect Disney Infinity, but we both feel the game is very underwhelming. I can't help but think using the Prequel films as toys is going to help the situation any amount.
I would guess amiibo are here to stay until Ninty run out of characters, Skylanders has the best if still slightly flimsy game for kids but the figure designs are starting to become repetitive, Lego has Warner's vast IP library to farm, but they're only going to tack it onto the usual Lego game formula, and Disney need to improve the amount of story content in their games.
PLZ make........
.......And also Goofy, Gaston, and also Bill Nye the Science Guy!
If the eschew the classic films entirely in favor of this animated stuff, I'll be disappointed. I'd love a classic trilogy playset, but then again, I could just save my money. On second thought, I hope the rest of the figures are as in appealing as these...
This looks like a bargain bin/Black Friday buy to me...
So now the starter pack is two figures instead of 3?
I would rather have Yoda or Obi Wan. If true I will pass.
@rjejr
My Tinkerbell is on the way. I also got Groot.
These games are just SO expensive. I really want to get into them, but I'm not creative enough to get my money's worth from the Toy Box and having so few playsets, such expensive playsets, and playsets that only work with one version of the game really kills it.
Especially that last one. If I could buy 3.0 and play pre-made Marvel, Star Wars and Disney games, I think I'd drop the money. But it's just a waste as it is. And at $35 a pop, they're pretty expensive short games, too.
@sinalefa - I saw Tinkerbell in Target yesterday and remembered I wanted her, but we just don't play the game. Could be a Father's Day gift from the kids though if they ask. I wouldn't mind a Splatoon squid but if it isn't sold separelty then I don't want it.
I think my kids have lost interest in Splatoon, the youngest wants to buy DBZ:XV on the PS3 and the oldest really wants XCX. Next Friday's ND may be the deciidng factor.
My only question is why would they push "Clone Wars" which ended over the currently on the air Star Wars: Rebels? This doesn't quite pass the sniff test.
Too bad they went with the animated Star Wars stuff instead of the live action ones. Can only hope they'll add that as a playset later on
And for love of butterflies.. Please let us play with any character we want in the playsets now and not just the ones that "fit" into that world. Skipped 2.0 because of this, and will skip 3.0 as well if they don't change this.
I was on the fence about 3.0, but this sells it for me.
@rjejr
I dont have a single DI game. I just get the figures I like.
I saw the squid only on amazon. A bit in the expensive side though.
@sinalefa - I think there are a lot of amiibo collectors like that as well.
2.0 feels really half-baked; the actual missions you get with the playsets are simplistic, and the ones you can make they leave you with that unfinished feeling, as you can't perma-save or connect different world/levels to make it look like a proper game. Is ok to mess about, yes, but I feel we already spent too much money on it. And we haven't spent much on it...
@sinalefa the 2.0 starter pack was also 2 figures, if I'm not mistaken.
"...are you excited about this?"
No. This isn't the Star Wars I acknowledge.
@ShadJV
I just checked. The Marvel one has 3 and the other one has 2. The latter is cheaper of course.
@rjejr So agree with you.
My family and I did not do the Clone Wars thing. If it was Rebels or OT I'd be in trouble.
I guess we'll have to see what else is offered. :/
One good thing from a marketing perspective. The Clone Wars has a strong popularity already while Rebels is sort of ramping up still and most importantly the model style really matches. The design of Clone Wars was meant to look kind of like sculptures.
Star War Rebels is meant to look like Ralph McQuarrie concept art and actually has visible pencil lines in it.
@aaronsullivan - "The Clone Wars has a strong popularity already"
Stronger than the original trilogy? This seems like a Nintendo move to me.
I know you aren't a fan of my admittedly esoteric movie choices, but w/ Han and Luke showing up in the new movie I thought Luke and R2, or the little green guy, or that bad guy in the black helmet.
I know that female Jedi and the show are popular, but THAT popular? This really almost seems like an April fools joke. Even the box art is atrocious. Disney Infinity Play Without Limits 3.0. And that little tiny white Stars Wars over Anakin's crotch. Pathetic.
OK, I'm done now. I'm going back to be thankful and looking forward to Lego Dimensions and seeing what Skylanders offers this time around.
@rjejr
Probably more popular with kids to teens, the primary market, yes.
If you look closely at that pic, C-3PO, R2-D2 and of course Yoda and Darth Vader are all there. Even a tauntaun. The weirdest part: Is that Princess Leia riding it or Padme? Looks like Leia from the original. It seems they will mix new and old but with Clone Wars so prominent, it seems that will be the focus.
I don't think this is legit. The choice makes no sense, Disney's new animated show on their own channel is Rebels, the new Star Wars is coming out that focuses heavily on the original trilogy characters and if they were going to launch it wouldn't be off an old series. It all just feels off.
It needs a major improvement in its presentation before i'll consider getting this
Look to the left of the box art...POD RACING!!!
If true, it seems that the Clone Wars series characters are pretty polarizing for fans. I like the look of the series and think it would be a good fit for Infinity both toy and game play wise. Princess Leia, Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan, and possibly the later Darth Vader would all but be confirmed from the box art if true. C-3PO and R2D2 could be playable, but I would suspect they would likely be support characters in the story mode as they both would have very limited attack moves. But then again, if this is true, who would they opt for as the main villain in game... Anakin fighting (spoiler) himself?
@bluedogrulez You can actually unlock the Luke Skywalker landspeeder by playing as every character released in the current Infinity 2.0, complete with Star Wars theme. But yeah, they clearly show podracers in the boxart. Should be pretty good, but I wish Disney would just come out and confirm or deny some of these rumors themselves. I live about 30 minutes from Avalanche Studios, so I suppose I could stroll by and find out myself...
That is young Obi-wan.
For those who think this is fake, you can argue that they just ripped imagines from Clone Wars: Light Saber Duels, which prominently features these versions of anakin, obi-wan and ahsoka
Clone Wars? Pass. Not interested at all.
@SheldonRandoms Heck yeah, I demand Jar Jar too!
I might even buy the game when he's released.
Funny how they have to go with Clone Wars instead of Rebels...it's as if they think CW is better...
Maybe if they show some more Star Wars characters, I'll have to get it. sigh
1. only 2 figures cause SW fans will buy this nonetheless
2. Clone Wars since a separate pack would sell the worst of all the SW films/series
3. I-VII + Rebels = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Fake. This game cannot already have a PEGI rating when it was just "leaked"!
I thought this was fake too. If it's not I'm surprised Disney would choose to focus a game on the old TV series instead of their current show Rebels. Makes no sense.
However, since discovering DI last summer, my kids and I have been hooked. I'm an adult gamer and Disney fan and I enjoy the game probably even more than my kids do. I also appreciate that all the characters are readily available in stores, unlike a competing brand of toys to life figures that I will not collect.
DI is not without it's flaws, but it is a very fun gaming experience, and the figures are all well made and nicely done. I will eventually get the next version, but have learned that if you wait six months you can save a lot of money.
OMG Ahsoka looks great!
Also: If I can import Tinkerbell and have her fight with a lightsaber, I'm soo buying this.
Still no Darkwing Duck? Still no sale. They will have to release characters from the Disney Afternoon line-up before I will even considering buying a single Infinity figure.
Until then, I am content with Nintendo's Amiibos. I actually found Pac Man, Wario, Ike, Marth and Meta Knight in my local store today (about time I had some luck)!
@Nintendzoey
Wow! You indeed got lucky on that amiibo find!
Infiniflop.
@Nintendzoey Man, I have even considered this I'd buy all of those. Problem is: The product is primary aimed at kids and they don't even know those characters. Gotta hope the Duck Tales reboot is a success.
@SheldonRandoms I'd totally buy a Bill Nye one, and I don't even own the game
They had to take from clone wars to give that cartoon felling on the figures. They couldn't use an Anakins real face. Look at Jack Sparrow from disney infinity 1. He was cartoon looking. Plus they probably will have the new rebels and the new movie figures. I can't wait either way.
@DeltaPeng Yes I did. When I saw them in store I ran over to them and yelled "OH YES!", while I grabbed them as fast as I could. My sister was with me at the time and said "whoa, what's the rush here?" (as she is not really into video games, so I don't think she really knew what the big deal was). She probably thought I was going crazy or something.
@Monsti Yes I really hope the DuckTales revamp will be a success as well. I need my ducks from the 80s / 90s back on TV.
I think my family is done with DI. We have not played it in a long time.
We may try Lego Dimensions though.
Double negative in the subtitle...
