Re: Elden Ring's Switch 2 Physical Version Seemingly Tarnished By 'Game-Key Card' Release

Old-Red

This should not be allowed, it's environmentally irresponsible. Not only is there a carbon footprint for the plastic and transport, the game will likely be downloaded multiple times, giving one copy a higher carbon footprint over its lifespan.

I love collecting games, and I know people think a physical copy is bad for the environment, but I think they'd be surprised to find out how bad downloading full games is too, especially multiple times.

Re: Community: Which Switch 2 Games Are You Wishlisting?

Old-Red

It feels strange for me to not be going for the switch 2 on lunch and being hyped for the new games, but so much of this console reveal has been soured with the crazy prices and lack of progress. Coupled with the new key card dodging I'll have to do, I'm just not that interested anymore.

I suppose I'll get one, but I'm not rushing out the door for it. It's a shame, I don't really recognise the Iwata and Reggie era that was focused on making us happy. The company feels pretty soulless these days.

Re: Switch 2 Games Cost A Bit More Than You're Probably Expecting

Old-Red

Very risky strategy. I will get the console, but it looks like I won't be buying any switch 2 games until retailers bring the prices down, which I think will have to happen eventually.

I don't know how they think parents will be able to justify spending £75 on a game for their kids. £40-50 is the sweet spot for me. Once they come close to that I'll consider a few games here and there, but £75 for a game is a flat no from me.

Re: "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games" Are A Thing, According To Official Website

Old-Red

If they try to charge me to upgrade every single game I already paid for and own they can do one. Honestly, it might actually put me off getting a switch 2 at all until much later in its lifetime.

Games automatically running better on the switch 2 should be a bonus like PS4 games on PS5, but it's not something I'm willing to pay money for.

Re: Rumour: Switch 2 Game Cases Might Take Up More Space On Your Shelf

Old-Red

Unfortunately this is probably true to make sure Mum, Dad, Granny and Grandad can easily see the difference in stores. I think Nintendo are trying to capitalise on Sony and MS exiting the stores over the next generation and going in hard on physical shop space. It could actually be a stroke of genius, as stores will welcome them with open arms.

Either way this looks like the last big hurrah for physical game. I'm just glad I've got at least another decade of collecting. I'll miss being able to pop into a few shops in town to check for second hand bargains, but hopefully this last wave will see me out. Weird to think I've probably only got three or four generations left in me.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Expresses Remorse Over Harsh Treatment Of Ōkami Fan

Old-Red

I think people take the whole Kamiya persona thing a bit too seriously. He's generally having a bit of fun and mostly poking fun at social media in general in my opinion. If you watch any of the recent conversations he had on video or interviews in the past it's clear that he's just a creative dude who doesn't take life too seriously.

That doesn't mean seeing this fan's reaction didn't make him consider the effect his trigger bans might have on people though.

Re: Braid: Anniversary Edition Sales Have Been "Utterly Terrible", Says Creator

Old-Red

It's kind of ironic that Blow is stuck in a time loop trying to flog an old time manipulation themed game that everyone and their dog played 15 years ago. It's not even like the game has replay value. It stinks of him trying to do as little as possible to justify a re-release just to up the general price. Dude should have moved on and spent more of his time working on something new.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Director Davide Soliani Leaves Ubisoft After 25 Years

Old-Red

What they should've done is release the 2nd game content complete without all the season pass dlc nonsense. Why would I bother buying a game new at full price when I know I can wait a year or so and get everything for a fraction of the price. It's the last thing publishers want to consider or admit, but players are wise to their shinanigans. They deeply underestimate how important a game complete on cart is for Nintendo collectors. A few patches is OK, but a big chunk of game missing makes buying a copy physically pointless or leaves a bad taste.

It seems like Nintendo learnt this with Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. I think I paid for two season passes during the switch's lifetime, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade 2's dlc, but only just managed to get through BotW's just before TotK came out. Going back to games months or even years after they release isn't that enticing, especially when you have to pay for it and I learnt that after getting burnt on BotW. In Mario Vs Rabbids 2's case it put me off buying it completely when they announced loads of season pass stuff before it even released even though I enjoyed the first game a lot.

It's unfortunate for the games' director as he did a stellar job and got shafted by his greedy employers.

Re: Nintendo Will Continue To Support Physical Media And "Maximise" All Software Sales

Old-Red

With all that's going on on the industry, Nintendo are the only platform holder I have any faith in and will continue to support financially going forward. This news only reassures me that I will at least have their games to play for the next generation.

I don't know what's going on with Sony and Microsoft, but their lack of responsibility and recognition for the fans and staff that got them to where they are is frankly disgusting. I cannot in good faith give them any money or support until they wake up from this self-important nightmare they're stuck in.

Re: Talking Point: What Would Make You Happy To Give Up Physical Games And Go 100% Digital?

Old-Red

All of the publishers and platform holders have proved themselves untrustworthy, thus I have completely retracted back to physical only when it comes to actually spending anything substantial on a game.

Buying a game digitally is only viable if it is for pennies, with built up credit from buying physical copies or part of the forced subscriptions to play online. Digital games have no value or meaningful capacity in my eyes, so I only acquire games digitally if I am prepared to lose them in the near future and they are essentially throwaway in nature. I guess similar to rentals really.

If they don't want us to own games then I'm not prepared to invest in them unless the cost is equal to that mentality. They had the chance to treat us with some respect and build a level of trust with the pricing and reassurances of digital game and blew it. Now they're heading for a crash due to the greed and desire for complete control and desire to price fix. Shame.

Re: Xbox's Pentiment Is Getting A Limited Run Physical Switch Release, Pre-Orders Coming Soon

Old-Red

Completely given up on limited run now. This most definitely will come out eventually in the UK as a normal release. The last order I got from limited run was left as delivered and I never got it. Over $200 worth of stuff gone and they washed their hands with me, saying I needed to contact my local delivery company. No name or idea who it was and no proof of delivery. Shocking, after spending quite a lot with them over the years too.

This site should think twice before promoting their releases.

Re: Rumour: Switch Successor Might Not Be Launching Until 2025

Old-Red

Honestly, I can wait. I just hope they get it right. If they make it backwards compatible with the huge library of physical games I have and manage to refine what the switch already is, it's an easy win for Nintendo.

It's such an open goal for them at the moment. All they need to do is build on what they've set up and keep making good games that don't break the bank financially, while Sony and Microsoft continue to destroy themselves from the inside, chasing magic bean trends that nobody wants.

Re: Square Enix To Slim Down Its Gaming Lineup To Ensure Higher Quality

Old-Red

Considering I've bought 5 Square games in the past year and only actually played one of them, they may be right. I'm looking forward to getting round to Triangle Strategy, Octopath 2, Trails of Mana and Tactics Ogre, but finding the time to play all these games feels like a time management video game all in itself.

I don't think it's the games they're making that are the issue, it's the finite amount of time people have to play them. It's a shame this message can't be easily communicated with the higher ups and shareholders at publishers. The industry is over saturated and needs to find a way of slowing down a bit without all these studios and publishers going bust.

Personally, I'm stockpiling games for when digital and subscriptions completely take over and I'm left behind as one of the old school physical dinosaurs. I'll have my own massive library of games to play that'll trump any subscription on offer.

Re: Doug Bowser: Nintendo Has A "Great Relationship" With Microsoft

Old-Red

The more MS run around buying up big publishers, ruining them and lowering the overall quality of games in the industry, the more it benefits Nintendo and sends people their way.

If MS somehow manage to buy Nintendo, then that could be the end of the industry as we know it. A market full of low quality games full of microtransactions and adverts. Nintendo's pride and standards are the only thing keeping the wolves at the door in my opinion.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Old-Red

It absolutely does, simply to stop any re-releseas and hopefully force free performance upgrades. I want Nintendo to focus on moving forwards now, I'm tired of all the deluxe and ultimate versions of games I've already paid for.

Whether or not the Switch successor is backwards compatible will have a huge bearing on whether I buy it day one or not. If it's not, I will simply play the games I have and wait til the end of the new consoles lifespan so I can get it and the games super cheap.

Re: Soapbox: How Zelda's Bad Economy Made Weapon Degradation Great Again

Old-Red

The weapons degradation system in BotW and TotK is great if you embrace it. I'm using and throwing weapons about like candy and it's great fun. People who keep complaining about it are just too stubborn to give it a go and find out how quick paced and chaotic the combat can be.

The secret is to throw weapons at enemies as a form of crowd control instead of waiting for them to nearly break.

Re: Random: Bayonetta 3's Director Was Worried Hideki Kamiya Would Interfere

Old-Red

It's a shame he didn't interfere tbh. The introduction of Voila and some of the other choices basically ruin half the game. I've tried to pretend that I love it, but the truth is only the bayonetta sections hold up. Everything else is just a frustrating waste of time.

It's tragic that they've implied that Viola is a going to be the future of the franchise.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

Old-Red

I would like to see a home console that is close to PS5 (incredibly unlikely I know) in performance and that would preferably play switch games too. Then the switch can carry on as essentially the handheld option with a portable version of the new console coming in 5+ years. This would be the perfect console cycle loop imo.

Whatever happens, I think it's time all our game collections carry over indefinitely now, especially if we're heading for an all digital age. I will always buy physical if there's an option, but if that's gone, I want to know that my games will be always available to me on my account.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Name Link When You're Playing A Zelda Game?

Old-Red

I usually pick different names for characters in RPGs if I can, but for some reason I've always stuck with Link in Zelda games. It just feels wrong to change it, I don't know why.

I guess it's because he's a well established character that runs through multiple games. Even if I was to change his name in the game, I would still call him Link in my head, so it seems pointless trying to change it.

Re: Video: MVG Checks Out "Awesome" Update For GameCube Emulator On Xbox

Old-Red

@mikegamer emulation is one thing, a competitor allowing users to pirate other platform holders exclusive games on its console is another. Don't know why you chose to get judgy and nasty about it, but that's your issue to deal with.

I don't really care about emulation personally, just stating that MS wouldn't be so forgiving if it was the other way around.

Re: Return To Monkey Island Sets Sail For Physical Release

Old-Red

I have to agree with others here. I've ordered a fair amount with them, but the company and their ways have turned sour.

Way too many releases every month with serious over saturation, substantial rise in costs and shipping, awful customer service, incomplete games on cartridges and no indication if a release will get a world wide general release a few months later or not.

It's a shame, what started as a nice way to get physical copies of games that would never have released otherwise has become an expensive minefield of fomo scummery.

Re: Physical Switch Copies Of Bayonetta Are Returning To My Nintendo Store Later This Year

Old-Red

As a long time physical collector, I'm noticing a big shift recently. I almost paid £250 for a copy of this in Tokyo in April, but now have an order from base, which I'm worried may not come now.

I think it's obvious that we're only a few years away from the 'ALL DIGITAL FUTURE'. I'm glad I've collected a nice batch to play but also sad to see the end of gaming as I know it. I'm very interested to see what happens to the price of physical media as it finally dwindles and completely disappears.

Releases like this one really interest me, because the supplier knows that the fewer copies they print, the more valuable it will become. Even though it should be a cheap release that goes for a little money if there was enough printed.

Is this crossing the line of price fixing? I'd be interested in writing an article or blog about it one day, but maybe some one else is more suited on this site.

Re: The Shadowrun Trilogy Is Getting A Limited Run Physical Release On Switch

Old-Red

@Liam Doolan it would be really helpful if you could find out if these physical releases will come to Europe, as so many Limited Run releases do now. It's become an awful minefield for us buying overseas, as so many end up coming out here eventually.

I think some pressure needs to be applied on LRG to specify the deals and whether there is intent to release physical versions elsewhere.
