Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying The Cloud Version Of Hitman 3 On Nintendo Switch?

Old-Red

The only way I'd ever consider cloud gaming is if there was an option to rent a game for a week for £5. Otherwise I'm simply not interested, it's a terrible development for the customers. It gives the publishers complete control over how, when and how long you can play their games. It's gross that they've come in with heavy handed prices right at the top of the scale. You're renting their game and it should be priced as such.

It's a shame the media is so into it, but it gives them more to write about and review so it'll get their backing and support no matter how much we're put off by it.

Re: Soapbox: Since When Did Physical Releases Stop Being About Physical Games?

Old-Red

I decided to stop buying special editions of games this gen and I'm so glad I did. I'm still a physical collector, especially of Nintendo games, but I only buy games I will open and play for a personal collection of games I like.

Trying to secure copies of games like Fire Emblem Fates special edition on 3DS was far too stressful and was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back.

I think Limited Run is the way it should be, have an open order for everyone who wants a copy with a month long window to pick up 2 or 3 games for order at once. Not only does it take away the stress it also shows a respect for people's time, so there no logging in at ridiculous hours refreshing over and over to still miss out on a copy of a game you want.

Saying that, even LR have started edging up prices and releasing too many games too often in my opinion. I wish they'd be a bit more selective, have a two month window and offer one game every two weeks. Everyone gets greedy in the end I guess though.

Re: Editorial: Happy New Year From All Of Us At Nintendo Life

Old-Red

Happy New Year to everyone here at Nintendolife! Thanks for keeping up the good work. I have to admit I've moved over to PushSquare more this year as Nintendo haven't really released anything of interest to me since Luigi's Mansion. I still love the Big N, but it feels like it's been a long while since they tailored anything towards my ilk. Here's to 2021 and hoping that we get some of that classic Nintendo goodness.

Re: Hardware Review: Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. - A Gorgeous Object That Leaves You Wanting More

Old-Red

It's a nice little collectable and I'm surprised how good it looks on the little screen. One thing I'm disappointed with is there's no alarm feature. I don't know why I presumed there would be, but I was going to keep it on the bedside table and use it as an alarm clock. Seems like a missed opportunity. They really should have put Mario 2 and 3 on there too, but I can live without them.

Re: Interview: "There Would Be No Control On Switch Without The Cloud," Says Remedy

Old-Red

I got burnt buying the ps4 version of this a few weeks before they announced the ultimate edition and that there would be no PS5 upgrade for people with the original version. I still haven't bothered to play it and the whole thing has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth tbh. Charging so much for a rental cloud copy of it really takes the biscuit though. No matter how good the game is everything around it has been such a stink. I'm guessing 505 has a lot to do with this. I like remedy, but I think they'd do well to distance themselves from 505 before they get a bad reputation.

Re: The Outer Worlds On Switch Has Been Updated To Version 1.2

Old-Red

I wish they'd hold off releasing physical versions of games until they are completely finished with updates and patches. I really don't think people who buy physical games are in any rush, especially considering the game came to switch so much later than the other consoles anyway. I think most people would be happy to wait for a complete game on the cartridge.

I was quite excited for this, but now it's just come to the point where I'll play it one day for under a tenner on PS4.

Re: Poll: Did You Know That Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Supports Up To Four Players?

Old-Red

This is a super expensive luxury. I'd like to mess around with the tech for a few hours, but I'm not the target for this. I can't see many parents paying for this when they can get Mario Kart 8 for less and it's probably a much better game.

Multiple switches, multiple copies and toy cars needed. Realistically, a few hundred kids will actually get to play this with a friend and the amount of kids who will get to play 4 player will be minute. They should have put two toy karts in the pack for £120(ish) and allowed the game to be played on a TV two player at least imo.

It's a great idea though, I would have loved setting up courses and racing them with a friend when I was a nipper.

Re: Random: Some 3D All-Stars Players Aren't Happy About The Visible Debug Cubes In Super Mario Sunshine

Old-Red

A bit embarrassing by Nintendo standards, but I'm enjoying the games so much that is hard to be mad. The only real disappointment about the collection for me is the lack of love put into the extras. I was expecting a bit of Nintendo magic with the menus and extra info or artwork. Or something like Galaxy 2 being unlocked after 100%ing Galaxy 1.

There's no denying that they've cashed in a few faith chips with this one.

Re: Nintendo's Switch Online Service Now Has More Than 26 Million Subscribers

Old-Red

These statistics are misleading considering they gave away yearly subs with games to fudge the numbers and hide the low take up. I got two years of subs free with games I bought.

To be honest the value isn't that bad and I have probably got more than £20 with just the SNES/nes games and Tetris online. But I stand by the fact that online multiplayer should be free for everyone.

Re: Review: RPG Maker MV - A Potent Game Creation Tool, If You Have The Patience Required

Old-Red

@Anguspuss @Expa0 Yeah, I get that, I make levels on Mario Maker too, but to not give the option seems a bit off to me. Talking to some friends who work in the industry, we all agree that games like this and dreams are benefitting from the user base essentially working for them and paying for the privilege. The least they could do is give the option to release what you make as your own whether for money or not.

Re: Review: RPG Maker MV - A Potent Game Creation Tool, If You Have The Patience Required

Old-Red

With no ownership over your creations or possibility to export and sell what's the point in this game? I don't understand the thought behind this at all. If someone is going to go through all the effort to write and design a whole RPG why wouldn't they just use one of the many pc tool sets that's offers complete ownership.

I suppose someone could use the game and ease of portability to design a first draft, but even then there are probably better and cheaper ways to plan out an RPG before putting it together.

Re: Online Retailer Cancels Orders For Super Mario 3D All-Stars Due To "Woefully Short" Supply

Old-Red

I had a feeling something like this was going to happen. This is why I cancelled my first order and ordered from the Nintendo store itself as soon as it was up. Even though I use the online stores occasionally it seemed like a big part of this whole approach to the 3D collection was to control the price and stop the various sites from undercutting the official store, which they often do even with 1st party titles.

Nintendo can damage a lot of customer faith in these sites by putting them in a position where the can't fulfil their pre-orders. Either that or the whole thing has been poorly thought out and managed... Yeah, it's probably just that.

Re: Poll: How Do You Feel About 'Limited-Time' Games From Nintendo?

Old-Red

I don't know, at the end of the day they are selling me something I want and it's quite good value at £17 for each game all on one cartridge. I'm more than happy to join in with a celebration of a series of games that have brought me so much joy throughout my life.

Not leaving the games on the e-shop, even sold separately, is where things get a little sketchy. I don't buy digital generally anyway, but not giving people the opportunity to buy and play these games in a year or so is just a bit mean-spirited really.

Imagine someone who finally gets a switch Xmas 21 and they want to play one of these games. The only option will be to pay double the price which helps no one but the scalpers and Nintendo lose out on a sale too.

It is what is and the only logic I can find here is that Nintendo need a certified and controlled boost of cash to tide them over until the end of the fiscal year. If it helps them get through this awful year and keep the ship stable I'm happy to help them out.

Re: Review: NBA 2K21 - Ignore The Microtransactions And You've Got The Best Basketball Game On Switch

Old-Red

@scully1888 I normally try an avoid this kind of conversation online. I try to go by the rule of not writing a comment that I wouldn't say to someone's face, but when it comes to monetisation like this I find it hard to hold back.

The fact that I didn't even realise it was you who reviewed this game until you replied and I had similar issues with another review you did recently goes to show that I simply don't agree with how you review or rate games. I guess that's all we can take from this really.

Re: Review: NBA 2K21 - Ignore The Microtransactions And You've Got The Best Basketball Game On Switch

Old-Red

I don't get it, we all know it's a gross, exploitative excuse for a game that should be free to play at best. Is it really worth sacrificing your integrity as a site just to get a few free copies of games in the future? I've got nothing against the reviewer as they are just doing a job, but surely it would be better for the site, the readers and the industry on the whole if you waited a bit, bought a copy and let them have it with a genuine review. If the review sites aren't careful they're going to end up with a job they hate and a gaming industry full of games like this.

Hiding behind the whole 'As a game it's very solid and without all the negative, predatory microtransactions it deserves a solid score.' nonsense doesn't cut it. The game does have all those negative aspects to it and should be scored accordingly.

Re: Platinum Celebrates The First Anniversary Of Its Switch Exclusive Astral Chain

Old-Red

Astral Chain is one of the best switch exclusives. A stellar game and news of a sequel would make my day. It might be at the point where I'd be more excited for a follow up to this than Bayonetta 3, but that's probably because the wait for 3 is taking so long I'm starting to lose interest.

Mention a game, show a few demos of what's to come in the run up months before release then knock it out the park. That's how a game should be announced and released in my opinion.

Re: PlatinumGames Opens Its Own Merch Store, Kicks Things Off With Masks And Logo Tee

Old-Red

It's strange seeing a company I once adored slowly turning into something I hate. Hate might be a bit strong, but what happened to just making good games and releasing them? I can't help but feel like there's some caveat on the horizon for Bayonetta 3. Cut into chunks, lots of paid for DLC, microtransactions, held off to be released on a NEW version of the switch etc.

Re: Yet Another Physical Indie Publisher Appears, Kicks Things Off With Super Blood Hockey

Old-Red

@Paraka Agreed, enough is enough now. I would never say people shouldn't be allowed to make physical releases, but there are too many companies doing it now. I decided I was out when I couldn't get a copy of Hotline Miami collection cause they sold out in a few minutes (probably bought by scalpers).

At least Limited Run give a time window to make an order, but even their prices have started to sneak up from $30 to $35 and even $50 or $60 in some cases.

It has almost got to the stage where people are trying to fix the retro market in advance by creating rare copies of games that will be worth a fortune in 10 years or so. Problem is the more physical games that flood the market like this the more likely collecting won't be worth the money or effort.

Re: Huge 95% Discount Pushes All-Star Fruit Racing To Number One In The Switch eShop Charts

Old-Red

I'm surprised Nintendo allows publishers to game the digital charts this way. I've noticed that a lot of games do this thing where they reduce the price to next to nothing for a few days, get high up the chart, then go back to the original price with a high ranking on the sales chart that will inevitably trick a few unsuspecting kids or parents into buying their shovelware games at full price.
